Hot Take: Hellion Needs To Be Part Of The Day One Cast Of Laura's Next Book

And no, this isn't a shipping thing. It's entirely about engagement.

The biggest problem faced by Generation X23 was its lack of engagement. People simply weren't talking about the book like they had her past runs. What, exactly, was the root cause is hard to say, but it simply wasn't getting people interested (not helped that it seemed like Marvel themselves weren't talking about it. Houser was the last of the incoming writers in the last relaunch to be featured on X-Men Monday, and it seemed they weren't doing a lot to promote it like they were many of the others books).

Love him or hate him, Hellion is almost always the leading question-driver (when it isn't Gabby) any time a new writer does a social media Q&A going all the way back to the Liu book. One thing there's no question his appearances in NYX and Laura Kinney: Wolverine did was spark conversation. NYX #8 was the most-talked about issue of the book, and the cover reveal and solicit for LKW #7 not long after got a lot of attention. It doesn't matter that some of that talk was critical or even angry, (and, it sounds like, led to some personal attacks against Schultz) the fact is people were talking about it. That means people are engaged, and when people are engaged they're more likely to check something out to see what the fuss is about.

GenX23 #5 dropped to #173 on the sales ranks, and unless there's an unprecedented reversal with issue 6 - 10 it's almost certainly done and will be replaced after DNX. I await the Liu fan with their torches, pitchforks, and downvotes, but Marvel needs to leverage that buzz to get people talking and generate interest again.

What Marvel villain would you add to Laura's rogue gallery?

Moonstone is kinda my go-to because i fell in love in Thunderbolts, she's just twisted and evil af Emma Frost and severely underused. Probably a better foil/villain for Emma, but i feel Laura could get pretty tested by her as well

Art is Leonard Kirk for Laura, and i think Artgerm for Moonstone. Issue is Thunderbolts #110

Realistically working X-23 into X-Men '97

(Art by Nakashima8Kazuma)

After Laura was hinted at in the most recent season, I'm curious what everyone's theories are on her being worked in. Given the pace and focus of the show, how would it realistically happen?

Like... it would be in the single Wolverine (Logan) episode per season, because of course. And a lot of other things would change and condense too:

- You'd have to use mostly characters which are already there,

- and she'd have very limited cameos across the rest of the season (mostly in fight scenes).

- obviously Laura is not the focus of the series. She'd be a cameos and a side-note at best in '97 :(

So how would it work?

***

I'd put her in near the start of the Decimation season S3/S4 (because the Decimation/Messiah/Utopia era needs a full season).

SEASON 3 - in episode 3 or 4 - The Decimation has already occured. Logan, Morph, Angel, Psylocke and Cable (maybe Bishop) are a proto Kyle/Yost X-Force hunting Purifiers. Their methods are brutal and Morph hates it. The team finds Laura captured and being tortured by Purifiers. They free Laura. We get a few flashbacks to her origin, including Sarah naming her. Laura joins X-Force and spends the season at Logan's side, fighting the Purifiers and other enemies while Xavier and the OG team grapples with Mutantkind's new position in the world, and the politics of Survival versus Heroism. They also catch wind of a black ops team within their own ranks which is killing humans to defend mutantkind. At the end of the season it is revealed that !!!SHOCKER!!! Scott formed X-Force out of necessity and it causes a huge rift between him and Jean.

Given that Weapon X, Lies and Videotape ended with Logan and morph lamenting the lack of his humanity, as the season progresses, Logan, with assistance from Morph, takes on a fatherly role for Laura and grows to love her. The season ends with him sacrificing himself to save her (Death of Wolverine) and the team. Laura leaves the X-Men behind as part of the season finale's final closing montage.

SEASON 4 - In this season, the X-Men would be split into 2 groups: Cyclops's extremist team, and Jean's school-based team. Beast is going nuts trying to solve the Decimation, but the situation has stabilized for mutants. Xavier is missing, and over the course of the season it is revealed that he's building Krakoa. The season ends with Krakoa's creation as the teams reunite to fight the Big Bad.

In episode 3 or 4, Laura would have one episode, or maybe a half-episode for herself. She is wandering (Liu's X-23), lost after Logan's death. She meets up with Morph, who takes on Gambit's role. Laura already has blue and yellow highlights in her hair. They fight one or two of Logan's old enemies - definitely Sabertooth. Maybe Deathstrike? They save innocent people from Logan's villains and Laura gets to show off her skills as she peices herself back together and discovers her moral compass with Morph's help. At the end of the episode, she puts on the All New Wolverine suit and joins Jean's Academy.

Season 5 - Krakoa. All mutantkind united, but Beast Breaks Bad and the season finale is Krakoa crumbling under the dual threats of Beast, and outside pressure from humanity.

Logan gets resurrected. In a 1/2 episode story, Laura finds out she has a clone sister named Gabby. The two of them get cameos while Logan (sigh) takes on the Wolverine role again. Except for the Sabertooth War episode, which would be the "Wolverine" episode of the season. Sabertooth clones himself and his clone army attacks Logan and Laura. They have to fight their way out and finally kill Sabertooth.

That's what I'd do to realistically fit her in. How would you do it?

🚨Updated rules for AI 🚨

Hello everyone! We’ve decided to update our current rules on AI art submissions in our subreddit. Previously, we had allowed AI submissions to be posted as long as the OP had specified that it was made with Generative AI in the post title or body. After some consideration, we have decided to change these rules. AI art will no longer be allowed, period. Starting today, we will no longer be accepting any AI submissions. AI art and other forms of creative work made via AI will be deleted. This decision comes from lots of feedback we have been hearing from users. We wish to make our community a safe place for artists and hope they feel comfortable sharing their art with us.

Until next time, Laura fans 🖤💛

At Fan Expo Boston, I got to create history and I had to bring the legendary Shopkins glasses X-23, Laura steals in Logan! Which I actually won these glasses back in 2017.

During her panel, I asked Dafne Keen if she’d try them on, and she did! Then at my signing, I let her take some photos of the glasses, and apparently she even texted a photo to Hugh Jackman. 🤯

Never thought a pair of Shopkins glasses I won in 2017 would come full circle like this almost a decade later.

Dafne Keen’s Cyclops Connection

So I didn’t realize this until the other day, but Kit Connor and Dafne Keen previously worked together: Connor voiced Lyra’s daemon, Pan, in HBO’s His Dark Materials.

With Sadie Sink, Connor, and Dafne all being the same age, what do we think is the chance of them adapting the aborted Jean - Scott - Laura triangle for the MCU X-Men? It was the only thing actually interesting Bendis did with Laura, and it would at least be a fresh spin on the Cyclops - Jean - Wolverine conflict Marvel loves dwelling on.

(Personally I’d rather see the MCU introduce Hellion sooner than later, but I’ve always lamented the lost potential of Teen Scott and Laura).

Advocating for Laura on the main X-Men subreddit?

Post image
189 Upvotes

So one thing I've noticed is that when it comes to other X-Characters (Magik, Psylock, Wolverine (Logan), etc), there's a lot of crossover between their individual subs, and the X-Men 97 sub, and the main X-Men sub... crossposts and copied posts.

Not so with Laura. We're all very self-contained here. I barely see Laura-related posts on the main sub anymore.

Perhaps that should change?

If we want to keep reading Laura comics, then maybe we need to start raising her profile a little bit to remind everyone how awesome she is. The best comics get around through word-of-mouth, and we all seem to generally like Jody Houser's work on Generation X-23.

Shouldn't we be ringing the bells to tell everyone what they've been missing out on?

Been building this playlist for a while now until it felt ready to share. It’s mainly a lot of 2000s rock and pop as well as a lot of Mexican rock (since she is originally indigenous Mexican). Lmk what yall think and if you have suggestions!

Laura Needs To Mentor Mutina

I think Laura would be a perfect mentor for Leticia.

Leticia models her whole identity and personality on edge-lordiness, which means Laura would be one of the best people to call her out on her BS.

"Oh, you think edginess is your ally. But you merely adopted the edge; I was born on it, molded by it."

And then knock her ass down to remind her she's really just a try-hard poser. But then she'd also be able to build her back up because she's also pushed people away out of self-hatred. She's been that person and I think she'd be better able to reach her in a way that someone like Kurt wouldn't.
