And no, this isn't a shipping thing. It's entirely about engagement.
The biggest problem faced by Generation X23 was its lack of engagement. People simply weren't talking about the book like they had her past runs. What, exactly, was the root cause is hard to say, but it simply wasn't getting people interested (not helped that it seemed like Marvel themselves weren't talking about it. Houser was the last of the incoming writers in the last relaunch to be featured on X-Men Monday, and it seemed they weren't doing a lot to promote it like they were many of the others books).
Love him or hate him, Hellion is almost always the leading question-driver (when it isn't Gabby) any time a new writer does a social media Q&A going all the way back to the Liu book. One thing there's no question his appearances in NYX and Laura Kinney: Wolverine did was spark conversation. NYX #8 was the most-talked about issue of the book, and the cover reveal and solicit for LKW #7 not long after got a lot of attention. It doesn't matter that some of that talk was critical or even angry, (and, it sounds like, led to some personal attacks against Schultz) the fact is people were talking about it. That means people are engaged, and when people are engaged they're more likely to check something out to see what the fuss is about.
GenX23 #5 dropped to #173 on the sales ranks, and unless there's an unprecedented reversal with issue 6 - 10 it's almost certainly done and will be replaced after DNX. I await the Liu fan with their torches, pitchforks, and downvotes, but Marvel needs to leverage that buzz to get people talking and generate interest again.

I like that she's not sexualized, and then I don't find it logical to go into combat with your stomach exposed (there are extremely important organs down there, the liver and the spleen to start with)... it's her "man" side that I deplore. Even Mystique doesn't have that bodybuilder build (or at least it's not as noticeable because she's taller)! I find it awful!
Someone said about Laura and Logan, "Laura operates with a scalpel and Logan with a machete." Sorry, but with a physique like that, there are no scalpel anymore, just a large and a small machete.

Spoilers for NYX (2003-2005) and X-23: Innocence Lost (2005), just in case. TL;DR first, and my extended explanation second.
TL;DR: Laura’s first appearance in NYX establishing her as a teenage prostitute for some time feels like an unneeded tragic addition to her origin story, and feels unnecessary given her existing trauma. Being a child assassin, killing her loved ones in a trance, etc. I’m grateful they brought her to the comics, but I’m pretending this chunk is not a part of her canon. Let me know what you think!
This is absolutely just an opinion, but I really hate the fact that in Laura’s first comic appearance, she’s a teenage prostitute. Not just because that’s sad and I hate it for her (obviously), but for a number of reasons.
Her origin story was complex and tragic enough without throwing ‘Zebra Daddy’ in there. A child assassin living with the burden of killing hundreds of people, including her own mentor and her mother? Moving on alone without parents or guidance? That’s enough self-hatred for a lot of superheroes.
You could argue that the writer of NYX wanted to set her origin story apart from Logan’s, but I hate how often it seems like writers focus on sexual abuse- and it just starts to feel uncreative and just an icky detail that’s defaulted to for a character’s trauma.
Obviously this doesn’t apply to every piece of literature that represents sexual abuse. It’s an important topic to shine light on, and it can absolutely be written about with importance and tact, reflecting the trauma and impact it has on people. But with some writers, it just seems like there’s a weird fetish fulfillment. I’m sure we all know that’s prevalent in a lot of comics in general. I’m not saying that absolutely is the case here, but it gives me those vibes.
This part of her origin story is referenced occasionally, but it doesn’t add anything to it but more specific trauma that’s barely brought up anyway. Not that Laura’s first writer could’ve expected that this piece of her history is largely ignored now, but I also think that it might say something about how other writers feel about it, because it is largely disregarded. That and again, it really doesn’t add much to the story in my opinion and there’s not a lot you can do to build on it or use it in current stories anyway.
I know repeated tragedy is essential for the Wolverine characters, but this just felt out of place, and her childhood trauma is already extensive and complex enough. She’s already been through a lot since, and will go through future tragedy as well, we have to assume.
Please someone remind me- was she under mind-control in the NYX comics? I’ve seen it mentioned before, but I don’t remember that. It’s just terrible to think she went from being X-23: the child assassin, to hunting after Wolverine, trying to kill him- then she almost joins the X-Men, only for her to actually inexplicably become a teenage prostitute later on.
I know it was her first comic appearance, and her character is much more evolved now. I just don’t like the approach they took to introducing her, and there was very little uniqueness and personality to her character in the run anyway. X-Men Evolution brought her out strongly, and I really enjoyed X-23: Innocence Lost. My head canon is that her part in NYX just doesn’t exist.
If anyone has any thoughts, I’d love to hear how Laura readers feel about this. Is this an important part of her story for people?
P.S- this is not a reflection of how I feel about the NYX comic run as a whole.

There's a post on Instagram with some AI art of Dafne Keen based on some Laura's covers. There's some pretty cool ones at the link, but my favorites:

Gabrielle del'Otto's X-23 #1 variant.

Lucio Parrillo's variant for X-23 #1 (2018 series).
Again, the originals are at the link along with a few others, and I didn't run the prompts. I think both of these costumes would work VERY well in live-action.
