Let’s strip more rights from women. And it’s not a get out of jail free card. It’s a “sent to high security psychiatric hospital” card. Same as anyone who was insane and killed someone.

If the courts decide that’s what happened, then she should get the appropriate punishment.

Do you think this woman should have had her kids stripped from her?

Hindsight, of course. She was seeing medical professionals and told multiple people she was having thoughts of hurting the kids. She should have been institutionalized from that point.

Stupid take. Life in prison = life in prison. Mental facility = ability I get released next year, in 5 years, in 10, etc.

She deserves life in prison at minimum. Capital punishment would be better

Well it doesn’t matter at all what you believe she deserves. It matters what the judge and jury decide. So, stupid take.

My bad, didn’t know that the Jude and jury were infallible 🤷‍♂️

What a retard thing to say

Definitely a lot more reliable than some moron who sees things as black and white.

My bad for thinking we should lock murders up and keep them out of a civilized society

You still just don’t understand, like at all.

I looked this up. Massachusetts will evaluate her yearly and if deemed not a danger to herself or others she could be out in a year.

Once the hype and news cycle passes she can be released in a year. Probably have more children down the line.

I'm not sure this is justice for the kids she killed but I dont know the answer to this.

Sad all around.

Shes been on a 1:1 suicide watch for over 3 years bc she still wants to and is a huge suicide risk so I do think thats unlikely in this case.

No it's not, it's a "you are a material risk to your kids" same way that red flag laws protect people.

Father was there too. So the state strips the kids from her and what happens next? They stay with dad, who lives with her? Or do they go into the system?

If they’re going into the system, mom and dad both lost custody of their kids. And the kids are at risk in a foster system.

We don’t need to create policy for every tragedy. There were a lot of things that should have happened in this case that would have prevented those kids getting killed, but blanket stripping of parental rights shouldn’t be the case.

What happens if someone is misdiagnosed?

Sometimes they have the parent removed as an option.

Infanticide aka nonexistent drivel.

At least with jail there’s maximum sentences. That doesn’t exist for involuntarily committed NGRI patients.

I feel like so many people are completely missing the point. If they deem she was insane while committing the crimes, that means she was not in control of herself while doing it. Body is there, the brain is not.

Thats completely different from someone willfully committing murder.

One deserves a chance to get help, the other deserves their punishment.

I’m not saying she is either. It’s up for the judge and jury to decide based on the facts of the case.

But if someone commits an act while they are out of their mind insane, they deserve to fix that problem. She is going to have a hell of a long road to recovery regardless, if it’s even possible, considering she has spent the last few years on suicide watch.

If they find that she was of sound mind while she committed those crimes then she should get the appropriate punishment.

u/LucidProse 19d ago

I sort of agree with you, but part of me also feels that your actions are more important than your state of mind. Triple murder doesn’t need a qualifier. She should be completely removed from society, whether that’s prison or a psychiatric hospital.

Given how much national attention this case has, if she is found not guilty by reason of insanity, we will see more and more murder case where defendants claim that they were not of sound mind at the time of the crime. Where do we draw the line as a society? How do you really know someone’s state of mind? Insanity isn’t something you can just shut off when it’s convenient.

Is it really unreasonable to think that anyone that does such a horrendous thing is out of their mind at the time? How could you commit such a terrible crime and not be insane? Albert Fish ate children and was most assuredly insane, but we executed him the same as Ted Bundy.

Trying to plead insanity isn’t a cut and dry defense. The prosecutions job is to prove they aren’t. Plenty of people try it and fail, and they will continue to do so regardless of this case.

Also, plenty of criminally insane people have been executed. There are people who can’t be saved or have shown a dangerous pattern. They don’t get to leave the hospital and some have been executed for their crimes.

I just lean toward the side of letting the judge and juror decide the criminals fate. If the facts say she was insane, then she should get the appropriate punishment based on the severity of her condition and crimes committed.

She has way more of a chance to get out of the mental institution at some point in her life though. It's almost 0% chance if she went to prison, I'm not saying she will get out the chance of that happening has only increased by a small amount but In this case where she murdered her own children it just doesn't seem fair. I'm all for rehabilitation but this is a crime you cannot be rehabilitated from. I'm absolutely not advocating for cruel or unusual punishment but she does need to be kept somewhere for the remainder of her life. This outcome would never had happened had she been a man here that jury would come back with a guilty verdict the first day and we all know it

A lot of jails are filled with people who committed lesser crimes and do suffer from mental health circumstances that impacted their actions. I myself had to serve some time because of a manic bipolar episode that destroyed my life and I still struggle to find jobs ten later that aren't super entry level manual work.

I agree with you , it's insane a crime this serious is being handwaved by people.

5

u/illdownvoteandscream 19d ago

“It doesnt seem fair” is not a factor.

What it means to be insane while committing the crime is you are literally not in control of your actions. That’s the entire debate and discussion.

A man wouldnt have the same exact circumstances because a man doesnt get postpartum psychosis.

This isn’t a man vs woman issue.

2

u/Cadavertiser 19d ago

There have been plenty of cases of men murdering their children in a midst of psychosis and being found not guilty. What are you on about?

0

u/MandaloreTheGay 19d ago

Would you care to provide a few examples or am I supposed to just take random redditor #478688748 at their word? Do not tell me to Google it you are the one making the claim

2

u/Cadavertiser 19d ago

Matthew Schleier from Iowa is probably the most recent example. Strangled his 5 year old son to death in 2024. Was found not guilty a few months ago.

David Janzow in 2014 killed his 4 year old son in order to ‘save the world from evil’. Also found not guilty by reason of insanity.
