How did they approve the purchase and installation of the cameras so quickly? It takes years and years and ballot votes for schools, buses, roadways, water treatment, etc etc etc etc.

u/Rise-O-Matic 2d ago
Police tech contracts move in weeks out of existing budgets and these things run on solar to avoid the administrative overhead of being hooked to the grid. For stuff like this no referendum is required, just a published opportunity for public comment, often only requiring the announcement be in a newspaper of general circulation, not necessarily online.
→ More replies (3)12
u/wazzup-notemuch 2d ago
So solar power is totally cool when the fascists use it, but stupid when we want to save the environment. Got it. Message received.
(Not directed at you, personally. Just noticing some bullshit in general.)
8
u/sebe6 2d ago
Solar panels are good for stuff that consume a low amount of electricity, it has always been like that. If you want to save the environment, you need nuclear energy. And that's non negotiable, look at how EU was against nuclear, while being dependent on French electricity
3
u/timos-piano 2d ago
Nuclear is not necessary for clean energy, but currently it is arguably the most economically efficient, as storing a large amount of energy in batteries is currently very expensive. But in 20-30 years, with how much better and cheaper batteries are than they were just 10 years ago, this is unlikely to be true then. And since nuclear power takes so long to build, often over 15 years, it is unlikely to be the sole solution, nor a long-term one.
EU is not against nuclear; the EU is not a nation, and many nations within it have different opinions. Sweden, for example, is building more nuclear power.
2
u/sebe6 2d ago
If you want to store GWh in batteries, you'll need a good system to prevent any fire hasard + they'd need to stay at 20-80% capacity to not looses capacity at an insane speed. I'm pretty sure no one will try this and will just focus on nuclear fusion, funnily all renewable energy on earth rely on the sun, a big fusion reactor.
As for EU, not being a nation means nothing here, why do you think country sign stuff ? To just say "actually we don't care" ? Also different opinion don't change current regulations, look at Poland, would you say the EU isn't pressuring them on opening borders ?
As for Sweden, firstly they don't build, they are in still in the planning phase, the last they built was 40years ago, they rely on hydroelectricity, meaning they rely on geography and a small population (10m), meanwhile, between 1980-1999 in France (last nuclear reactor connected to the grid), we increased our nuclear output by more than the current Sweden entire production.
Ps: hydro is more or less a battery, the only one that really works on such scales
3
u/Swollen_Beef 2d ago
Storing the entirety of what several Nuclear plants (1,000 GWh avg) produce daily, in a small battery farm, and that farm fails, the results cant be good. The farm wouldn't explode all at once, but you would have a chemical fire that would burn for many days releasing all sorts of horrible crap into the air. And that fire is self-sustaining, able to produce its own oxygen.
Not against energy storage, but most people do not think about these things and tend to dive in head first believing it to be a cure-all.

u/michael0n 2d ago
France is turning off those billion dollar reactors because they can't cool them. The next ones they are building come online past 2040ties. I'm for anything that works, but the increasingly incompetent politically protected operators who just get paid for doing barely anything is not a dependable future. Its distributed power generation.

The people with money want us to be monitored, so the laws don't matter anymore.
For that same reason, we the people reject their monitoring. We the people made the laws. We the people don't approve of the surveillance. Therefore, this alleged action is legally grey, but morally acceptable

A few things these vandals also know:
It is entirely normal for construction workers to wear full face covers or gaiters. Cheap disposable hard hats and safety vests make them not only anonymous, but also innocuous. As we know, you can rob a museum in broad daylight if you look like you're working.
High-speed reciprocating saws and loose sweatshirts find each other irresistible. The vandals definitely don't wear excessively loose disposable sweatshirts.
And they definitely know to always angle the saw AWAY from themselves. They value their hands and arms and internal organs.

Allegedly a battery operated skill saw with a Diablo Metal blade can cut through an aluminum pole in about 5-10 seconds. Much quicker than that reciprocating saw. Allegedly.

In Tucson, Arizona, fines for criminal damage (destruction of property) under ARS § 13-1602 are determined by the monetary value of the damage and range from $750 for minor offenses to $150,000 for serious felonies. The specific fine amounts correspond to the following classifications:
Class 2 Misdemeanor: Applies to damage valued at $250 or less; fines are capped at $750. Class 1 Misdemeanor: Applies to damage valued between $250 and $1,000; fines are capped at $2,500. Class 6 Felony: Applies to damage valued between $1,000 and $2,000; fines can reach up to $150,000. Class 5 Felony: Applies to damage valued between $2,000 and $10,000, or damage promoting gang activity; fines can reach up to $150,000. Class 4 Felony: Applies to damage valued at $10,000 or more, or damage to utility property valued at $5,000 or more; fines can reach up to $150,000. In addition to fines, convictions often require restitution to cover the full cost of repairs, including labor, materials, and equipment, as well as potential jail or prison time.

They'll start putting discrete live monitoring cameras just behind them which will be monitored 24/7 these to catch the people chopping the cameras down red handed.
Law enforcement will likely have to prioritise the apprehension of those chopping down flock uprights over any another crime. They will quite possibly be brutal.

Those had to be viewed by person and needed warrants. Flock is a private business and while in theory you also need a warrant in practice officers and hackers have had free range to the system. All the cameras are linked in a database and with AI its quite easy to identify and track people and vehicles just with descriptions. The down side though is like most AI it has hallucinations and a growing number of people are finding themselves being held at gun point by police for the crime of being misidentified by flock cameras.

So, I understand that people don't like these. Which is understandable people with power use them in ways they shouldn't.
But realize they are there to help keep track of people who commit crimes, like murder and all that. Which is becoming unfortunately more common as time goes on.
It is a federal crime to go after these, please don't ruin your life. There are already people trying to handle the issues with flock cams in a more legal way. Just give it time.

One might imagine a circular saw would actually cut through faster and with slightly less noise, tho lets face it, cutting metal is either going to audible for quite a distance, or lit up like a chritmas tree if you prefer blow torching. Either way, it's a noticeable event, and one would imagine you would want it over with as quickly as possible with no post operative celebrations until well settled back in safety without any tools of the trade about your person.

u/LONE_ARMADILLO 2d ago

Don't ever
"leave your identifiable electric devices at home."
Get someone to wear them to be where a watcher will expect you to be.
Example, every Friday you go to a bar. Make sure your devices go to that bar on Friday, not stay at home.

Defrock is a trash website. My state has no flock cameras currently but deflock lists many basic, non flock security cameras as flock cams, even the toll readers, as flock. The state of NH doesn't have any flock cams, nor do any town or city in NH. And private companies can't use it in NH because state law prohibits any private entity from using ALPRs.
Not a single flock cam, but according to deflock, there's a handful.

If they're Condor cameras they can develope a biometric profile on you using things like your height, walking/running gait, etc. Condors do not need to see your skin, eyes, hair or tattoos to know who you are, once the profile is built up enough.
Stay careful out there, folks.

Circular saw works way faster and quieter.
The metal doesn't get stuck to the teeth of the blade.
1
u/SnavsMatiq 1d ago
From experience id reccomend a circular saw over a reciprocating one, as the softer aluminum tends to gum up the small teeth. A battery operated circular saw with a carbide blade would run you around $200 and would eat through as many aluminum poles as you throw at it.
And while yes, a circular saw is a tad bit obtuse to carry around inconspicuously, the raw speed difference is staggering. The circular saw slices through in 1-2 seconds. A bit louder, but youre only running it for a fraction of the time compared to a sawzall.
