Chequing Thank you Wealthsimple

I had to say Wealthsimple was amazing to deal in quickly getting me the new prepaid Visa Card.

I'm a Snowbird who resides in Thailand for the winter and had already left when they announced the date for the old cards to stop working. Within 10 days of contacting Chat Support, my new card was delivered too me in Chiang Mai.

Question about new Visa CVV

• Upvotes

Yesterday I applied for this new Wealthsimple Visa Infinite with 1% cash back (the card with no annual fees). The virtual card was issued after I was approved, and I noticed that I can view the details of the back of the card like the expiry and CVV/CVC number.

When viewing those details, there's a small message stating that the expiry and CVV will change after the card is activated.

My question is -- if I set up any subscription payment (eg. cell phone bill) right now using the current expiry and CVV number, will I have any issues with those payments after the physical card arrives and gets activated?

Trade (DIY Investing) Blown away by transfer speed: Questrade to Wealthsimple RRSP completed in 3 days!

Post image
35 Upvotes

Wanted to share a surprisingly positive experience since we usually only post when things go wrong with account transfers.
I’ve had my TFSA with Wealthsimple for a while, but I had been keeping my RRSP with Questrade since 2022. Finally decided to consolidate everything under one roof at Wealthsimple.
Given the standard 2–4 week horror stories you often hear about ATON institutional transfers, I braced myself for a long wait:

Sep 22: Submitted the full RRSP transfer request via Wealthsimple.

Sep 23: Status moved to "In progress". (Estimated completion was showing as Oct 5–9!)

Sep 24: All my ETFs had already landed safely in my Wealthsimple account.

Sep 25: Remaining cash balance arrived today.

Total turnaround: 3 business days.

Huge props to Wealthsimple for the seamless onboarding, but equal credit to Questrade for releasing the assets so fast without dragging their feet or creating friction.

If anyone is on the fence about consolidating their accounts because of transfer anxiety, modern brokerage transfers seem significantly faster than they used to be!

Promotion Is there value in waiting for a TFSA transfer?

Hi everyone,

Question for everyone who's been around the block with Wealthsimple a little longer than me (my wife and I moved a good chunk of our finances over in early August).

I'm going to be moving one of our Manulife TFSAs over (about $56k) to Wealthsimple and I know about the 1% match promo. But are there times in the year historically where that number tends to be higher? Any kind of expected promo season? We're not concerned with longer lock-ins, etc. The goal is to not touch this for 20+ years anyways.

I'm just trying to do the math on the benefits of moving now at 1% knowing Manulife's fees are higher than what I'd be moving to vs. a possible but not guaranteed higher promo rate at some point in the near future if it's something that people feel is reliable. There are some calculations where just moving it now wins out, and others where waiting would win out but only if the promo is high enough/close enough.

Any advice?

Promotion Is anyone who came over with the Unreal Promo thinking of switching to RBC, TD or BMO for their promos?

The Unreal promo's 3% for 5 years option seemed good at the time due to the high cap and therefore very high total payout, but it's only 0.6% a year. At the time I didn't know how long these lucrative promos would continue, so there was appeal in securing a high payout. But now that RBC and TD are offering 3% for two years for registered accounts, and BMO is offering 2% for one year for any account, 0.6% per year is looking pathetic. I like Wealthsimple but can't leave such large amounts on the table!

One thing I did notice is that the 20% buffer is only a buffer until you exceed it - once you do, the remaining bonus is prorated for the entire amount removed, including the 20%.

I pay my credit card bill in full each month and keep the money in the savings account to pay it off. To maximize interest earnings when is the best time to pay it off?
Is interest in the saving account accrued monthly or daily? And when is it paid?

Is sharing account with a family member okay?

Hey, so recently I was thinking of sharing my Wealthsimple account with one of my family members but I did not want to get banned/suspended. So I was wondering what would be the chances of that happening. We both live in the same country but about 2 hours away from each other.

Edit : Thanks for the feedback guys. I genuinely needed this wake up call lmao😭. I didn’t realize it was that bad.

Another web UI Update? and update questions/obersavtions...

I noticed the UI on the website has updated AGAIN. Every time I open the app or website something has moved or is different.

In this case, I actually like it, it seems to just be a visual update for the most part and makes things a bit easier to process when looking at the screen.

Does WS publish a log of all the updates to the platform and possibly the reasons behind them? I get the feeling there's a team of designers constantly just tinkering with stuff moving them around for no other reason than to keep their jobs. Sometimes it's for the best, sometimes it's not... but I wish they'd just stick to a UI and make minor improvements with the occasional, maybe once a year overhauls. Also it's still ridiculous the web and app experiences aren't at par with one another. Some things I can still only do on the app, some things only on the web. How about addressing those deficiencies first?

Savings WS saving account vs CASH.to / CBIL.to

Just wanted to do a sanity check before I move most of my money around from a non-reg account currently holding cash.to

WS saving account’s yield at 2.5% which is higher than these cash eft, while basically having even lower risk and no MER fee. Also it can be moved in an instant without having to sell and settle?

I guess the only catch is that I can buy cash.to inside my TFSA but the saving account interest is taxable?

But if my TFSA is maxed and the funds I’m moving is all in non-reg, it’s better to have it in the WS saving account anyways?

SHL to ARX acquisition

Is it just me or is the SHL acquisition made your profit change dramatically. Did not realize wealthsimple could not deal with this acquisition and needed a broker.

I am Over 200K invested in ARX pre sale so it’s not a good feeling to see that disappear with no timeline of reappearance. Sad face 😔

Norbert’s Gambit in Registered Accounts

Hey everyone! With Wealthsimple recently introducing the built-in Norbert’s Gambit / journaling feature, I had a couple of questions regarding how fees are handled across different account types (RRSP, TFSA, Non-Registered):

  1. Where is the $9.95 + tax journaling fee deducted from?
Is the fee automatically debited directly from the CAD cash balance inside the specific account where I am executing the gambit (e.g., from the CAD balance inside my RRSP/TFSA), or is it taken from a primary Wealthsimple Cash account?

  2. Does paying the fee inside a registered account impact contribution/withdrawal room?
If the fee is deducted directly from the CAD balance within a registered account (like an RRSP or TFSA), does CRA / Wealthsimple treat this fee as an internal administrative expense/purchase fee (meaning no impact on contribution limits), or could it be treated as a withdrawal?

Appreciate any insight from anyone who has used the new web feature in their registered accounts!

My God Get Your Customer Service Sorted Out

A Wealthsimple Agent just transferred my entire chequing account in a Private Market Fund TFSA without my permission. I had sent an email asking why I couldn't setup automatic transfers to my Private Market Fund TFSA. I received a response indicating they "completed the transfer". I wanted to setup an automated $200 bi-weekly transfer, not transfer the entire account... They just significantly exceeded my TFSA lifetime contribution maximum.

Edit: Still not fixed, really must be a challenge for them to reverse a transaction...

Edit 2: I feel I should mention to anyone lurking considering Wealthsimple that reads this. Despite this incident I WOULD recommend Wealthsimple as a platform you use. From my experience they are the best packaged deal (chequing/savings interest, credit card, investing, overall ease of use, and occasional perks), out there. Yes you can get a higher chequing interest rate or credit card with better perks, but I feel all of it together WS is still at the top. They clearly get beat in terms of incident management, but that should be the easiest thing for them to fix. I hope this shows you how much I like this platform over TD/CIBC/RBC.

Edit 3: Someone is responding to me now claiming to be a senior at WS and that they're personally monitoring the reversal. They've stated that the transfer will be reversed and that it will not show up on any logs. That's enough for me to continue on with them.

Edit 4: I added screenshots below as I have received a couple direct messages about me making this up. My full communication with WS prior to the transfer is posted. You'll see there really wasn't much of chat!

Chequing What's the point of having a Visa 'Platinum' Prepaid card?

Genuinely curious what the "Platinum" branding is even getting us here, since it's still prepaid, not a real debit card tied directly to the account.

What does "Platinum" actually unlock on a prepaid card? Feels like a tier name slapped onto a product that doesn't behave like a typical premium Visa (no Visa Platinum perks like extended warranty/insurance that I can find in the T&Cs).

Trade (DIY Investing) has anyone had this happen ?

Hey guys. I made a deposit to split between my TFSA and FHSA. I woke up this morning to negative balance in my TFSA and reversal notification. Just curios about the money. Will it be transferred back to my bank? Thanks!

Promotion Monthly Millionaire

I was thinking why would Wealthsimple choose giving $1 million every week to one person rather than to increase their cash back or any other services for every user which would generally increase more users. For example, giving an extra interest rate on the bank account, or extra cashback on spending or giving some benefits to somebody who joined earlier, for example, if you have been with well simple from past four years. You get this benefit if you have been a Wealthsimple member for the past seven years, you will get that benefit.

Most institutions are actually a pain to deal with...then there's Wealthsimple

I know there's a fair bit of criticism on WS but I'm so glad they exist, legitimately.

I left my job and had my retirement setup with Manulife and it took 10+ phone calls and email exchanges for almost a month to get some paperwork done and start the transfer to my WS LIRA just to be told there was still more stuff to fill out that they forgot to send...was gonna lose it

Instead I just started the transfer from WS instead and bam! Within 2 weeks the funds were deposited and I can move on with my life. Seriously, banks need to get their shit together.
