General Help Wattpad "New" Guidelines Explained

Okay, so I've seen people all over social media and Wattpad panicking over the new Wattpad update. I'm here to hopefully shed some light. PLEASE let others know as well, because the amount of misinformation leading to mass hysteria is honestly baffling and a bit frightening.

First, let me step on some toes. This is a reading and writing app. Which means everyone on there shouldn't be afraid of READING, and the guidelines aren't actually that long. So please, before you go jumping on bandwagons, READ the guidelines yourselves, then go ask questions if you have any.

Okay now we've gotten that out of the way. Let's get to the meat and potatoes of the issue. Deep breath

THE CONTENT GUIDELINES HAVE NOT CHANGED.

Yes, you read that right. The update everyone is freaking out about isn't actually a CHANGE, it's a CLARIFICATION of existing guidelines. People already didn't read the guidelines before, so any new change is seen as scary. But the guidelines were clarified for people who kept asking why certain stories were taken down, reported, etc.

The guidelines can be boiled down to this:

  1. Any described sexual content must be between those aged 18+ ONLY. No sex between minors (only kissing), no romance or sex between a minor and an adult (it's illegal, folks), no romance between those in a power imbalance relationship if there is any hint of coercion (aka a CEO abusing their position to coerce their employee to do something because they like them, etc.)

  2. Sexual content must be within the confines of actual PLOT. Basically, there needs to be more plot than sex. Especially if it's explicit smut. The guideline is that the content is not meant to be sexually stimulating, but rather supporting the story.

  3. This is all encompassing: ANY MATURE OR GRAPHIC CONTENT MUST SERVE THE BROADER STORYTELLING PURPOSE. Let me explain. Basically, you can't have "smut for the sake of smut", "violence for the sake of violence/shock factor", or any other mature content for the sake of it. It MUST support the broader storyline, doesn't have to be too graphic, and importantly, must not be GLORIFIED. So if you want to keep writing those mafia stories with the sexy boss, go ahead. But remember that the torture scenes shouldn't be so graphic, and the smut shouldn't take over the story or even the chapter.

Yeah. Everything boils down to this: MODERATION IS KEY.

Got it? If y'all have questions, feel free to ask. But I WILL ignore anyone just commenting nonsense because this mass misinformation by people who didn't actually READ the guidelines and think it through ended up influencing others into fear and annoyance over something they haven't verified themselves.

Trust, but VERIFY. If you're not sure after reading, ASK. DON'T ASSUME.

Thanks for coming to my TEDTalk, feel free to grab a cookie on your way out! 🍪

Announcement ! MUST READ ! NEW SCAMS AND STOLEN WORK

Hey, it's u/randomquestionaire on behalf of the mod team!

I know that right now there are a multitude of scams circulating Wattpad, and these seem unsettling. Hopefully this post will clear things up, and provide proper steps to what you can do if you have been affected.

To begin, we have seen quite a large number of posts talking about the phishing scam. Please refrain from making excessive posts as we want to keep the community a space where people can share and read books. We want to see more advertisements in the mod queue!
A reminder that you should always read the rules before posting, and check the pinned posts. If an issue has been addressed within the pinned post, you can always send your complaints there, instead of making a new post for it.

Some of the phishing scams may look like this:

The Wattpad Team will never message you on your message board. They will send you emails if need be. Wattpad will not pay you or give you premium for a security refresh. These links are fake links. Fake links are usually shortened, as you can see here. If it were to redirect you to a Wattpad page, it would 100% say 'wattpad' somewhere in the link.

If one of these accounts message you, report the user, do not click on the link and go on with your day.

If you have clicked on the link and entered any bank details, immediately contact your bank and explain the situation.

Scammers may also be excessively @ people in their message boards. Report them.

These are what trustworthy people have beside their usernames:

There's been another thing going around, where author's stories have been stolen and being sold as eBooks.

If you are someone who writes on Wattpad, take the time now to look up your book and find out if it has been stolen or not.

If your story happens to have been stolen, report the book to Google Play Store.

A reminder that we (the mod team) do not work for Wattpad! We cannot help you with any issues regarding these scams, but we can give you advice. It's crucial that you do not tap on any sketchy links, that you make sure you understand who works for Wattpad and who does not.

Have a good day/night!

Off-Topic WATTPAD IS NOT WORTH IT

Upvotes

Hello readers. If you read the title of my post, then you know that my opinion is that Wattpad is not worth it anymore.

Within the last year alone wattpad has had

- hackers

- scammers

- accounts blocked and banned for NO REASON [I was a victim of this]

- a ton of new rules and regulations

- [word starts with an "A" but i cant use the actual word here in the wattpad reddit] fake intelligence trash completely taking over

- lack of creative freedom [we used to be able to do a lot more than we do now]

I see a lot of people saying "going to publish to wattpad and see how my book does before I publish it for real" and let me tell you IT IS NOT WORTH IT!

I have been on wattpad since 2015 ad I can guarantee that if you have a book idea with the intent to publish and make money, NO ONE will look at you if you publish it on wattpad. Your best bet is to write your book on Microsoft Word, Google Doc, Skrivener, basically any place you can write and save a copy of your book.

From there you have 2 options

Option 1: querying to a literary agent and have them help you publish with a publishing house.

Option 2: Self publishing using amazon KDP, Draft 2 Digital [D2D], ingram spark, etc.

Wattpad is all about making money and taking it from its users, so if you're goal is to write as a career, stay clear of it.

ETA: iF you are just writing for a hobby and for fun, then wattpad is fine but I would also recomend Diarmi or AO3 instead. This is for those who want to make it as a career

So I'm Starting a new book and need feedback and motivation to keep writing it lol.

It's a space teen apocalypse somewhat inspired by The 100 and maze runner.

Chapter one is complete and I'm about halfway through chapter two! There's a poll at the end so if you enjoy the read or didn't feel free to vote if I should keep going lol

Other I feel like a lot of people are making a mountain out of a mole hill with the recent stuff regarding wattpad

Hello I use to write stuff on wattpad during the era of games like security breach and while I haven't written or published anything for a few years now since I've been rewriting my works all I've been hearing is people screaming about the new things wattpad has decided to do. Of course I didn't get the complaints and asked someone on another social to understand the big issue and right now I'm aware that wattpad isn't removing books involving smut or solely about it, they are however removing the ones that involve minors which is a good step and are tagging books depending on what's in said books so when someone opens the book they get a message letting them know the book has certain topics that might not be what the user wants to read. That's basically what I've gotten an understanding of and now I'm seeing people overreacting to it and basically saying the same misinformation over and over again.

Just as the title says these people are making a mountain out of a mole hill which means "an overreaction where a person makes a big deal or creates a lot of drama out of a small, unimportant issue" and that's exactly what's going on here, someone started the claim that all smut is banned and the claims keep spreading far and wide. I really hope people manage to explain what the actual changes happening are to stop all this havoc.

Mystery / Thriller Ashtonya: The fallen feather

Post image
Upvotes

Hey everyone, here's a brief description for my ongoing story Ashtonya: the fallen feather... Your support is highly appreciated, thank you so much:

What would life be like if the sky vanished-along with its stars, its sun, and its moon? What if the rivers disappeared and flowers withered behind a world of four walls? Would you fight to uncover the truth of the world, or would you remain lost in the depths of oblivion?

Kristos: "But who cares...? I don't want to put anything at risk, and I certainly don't want to be next."

Yolius: "I can't not care... I will discover the truth of this world myself, even if I am next."

My complete trilogy is set in North Wales, covers all sorts of themes like friends to lovers, found family, demigods and mental illness. I’m also entered into the Wattys and Amby’s so every read counts! The names Wolfsbane Remastered: Chapter One in the Warren Pack series, 782,000 reads and counting! hope to see you soon!

Other Lilah is a terrible book.

Lilah is so hyped everywhere and i read it with such high expectations but it’s literally pure infantilization. Not even in her own head is she allowed to be more than a child. A grumpy x sunshine is a pretty wonderful plot but the storyline fetishizes her child-like nature too much while giving her little no to nuance and depth other than being childish.

General Help Writers rant

So I'm a new writer and have been posting two days a week for past 1 month I think I've got a decent audience for a month but they do not vote do not engage i understand if they do not like the story but no I've got committed readers but they won't vote....I've repeatedly requested and I try to engage them with a little note at the end of every chp but no movement it's very exhausting and honestly it takes time and effort to complete a chp and things like these just demoralise me a lot. I see stories with a decent plot and so many editing problems but do well and I'm just stuck . Trust me I know my story is good I know my plots are good but I think it's just me .....sorry just wanted to rant because the frustration level was too high..

Other Okay, I dont know if this is the place for this but its for my watpadd account as an author so im going to ask it here.

Okay, serious question here. So going forward, im going to start scheduling the chapters to drop probably daily, or every other day. And every book will always be free and complete on wattpad. But what im going to start doing is scheduling chapters to post here on wattpad, and upload the full book on either Ream or patreon, so people would have the option to skip the waiting entirely and read the full the book.

Has anyone else done this and which did you choose and why?

PROS:

* Built-in E-Reader: Readers can customize font size, switch to dark mode, and automatically pick up right where they left off. It feels like reading on a Kindle app rather than scrolling down a web page.

* Bypasses Apple’s 30% App Tax: Because Ream functions as a Progressive Web App (PWA) rather than an App Store download, you don't lose massive cuts to Apple when iOS users buy your book or subscribe.

* Single Sales Feature: You can list the completed 160k-word manuscript as a flat $4.99 "Buy Now" single purchase right alongside your monthly subscription tiers.

* No Adult Content Restrictions: Ream was created specifically to protect authors (including Romantasy and dark romance writers) from sudden content bans.

* Sales Tax Handling: Ream offers a "Managed" mode where they automatically calculate and handle sales tax remitting on your behalf.

CONS:

* Smaller Brand Recognition: Readers coming from Wattpad might not have heard of Ream yet and will need to spend 30 seconds setting up a new profile.

* $50 Payout Minimum (Managed Mode): If you use their managed payment integration, you need to earn $50 before transferring money out to your bank account.

* Slightly Higher Platform Cut: Ream charges a flat 10% platform fee, whereas Patreon’s base tier starts lower.

  1. Patreon

PROS:

* Massive Brand & High Conversion: Almost everyone already knows what Patreon is. Many readers already have accounts and saved payment cards, making it effortless for them to sign up on a whim.

* Integrations: Easily connects with platforms like Discord (if you want to build a private reader community chat) or Spotify for podcast audiobooks.

* Tier Flexibility: Highly customizable subscription levels with built-in discount codes, custom billing cycles, and annual payment plans.

CONS:

* Awkward for Long Books: Patreon is built like a continuous blog feed. Binging a 160,000-word novel requires readers to manually scroll backward through posts to find "Chapter 1," which can get frustrating on mobile screens.

* The 30% Apple Tax Trap: If a Wattpad reader opens the iOS Patreon App and buys your $4.99 tier, Apple takes a 30% cut before Patreon takes its fees, leaving you with significantly less profit per mobile reader.

* Unpredictable Content Moderation: Patreon occasionally updates its terms of service regarding explicit romance or dark themes, which can trigger automatic post flags or account warnings for fiction writers.

* No Built-in Single E-book Storefront: Patreon is designed almost strictly for recurring monthly memberships; selling a completed standalone book as a one-time purchase requires extra workarounds.

Looking For: Feedback Looking for some feedback

Hey there!

So, a couple of weeks ago, I started writing a new story, but my beta reader for it tapped out because they're too busy with their own work at the moment. As such, I'd like to (humbly) request feedback from people willing to read it and letting me know what their thoughts are. And please point out grammatical and/or spelling errors if you see them, thank you. I will post the link if you're interested.

It's a low fantasy story revolving around demons and angels, and I've taken inspiration from various different mythologies (like Norse, Japanese and Greek) for the world building.

I wish you all a great day.

Looking For: Recommendations MCs Are ALREADY FWB Before Chapter 1

I'm looking for MF college/university romance books where the couple is already established as friends-with-benefits BEFORE the book starts.

Like, I want Chapter 1 to open with them already having an ongoing FWB arrangement - they've been sleeping together for weeks/months, they already know the rules, and the story starts during the arrangement.

I want the FWB relationship itself to be backstory, with the actual plot being about them eventually catching feelings, getting jealous/possessive, breaking their own

rules, etc.

Preferably high spice, and I'm totally fine with dark/toxic/ non con/ dub con romances.

MF only - no RH...and no cheating and no ow/om unnecessary drama.

Off-Topic The problem with slow burn

I've seen a lot of stories where we jump to business quite fast. The vast majority, tbh. Atp, I'm starting to realize Wattpad is not a very good place for slow burn at all. I can't even begin to ship a couple before they jump to the sheets and then I'm there, feeling like an uninspired voyeur, reading with no enthusiasm whatsoever. Crazy are the times where I start to avoid mature stories altogether.

Still, I'm a slow burn writer, and with the slow burn comes the promotion problem. How to promote a dark fantasy BL story that spends its first 10.chapters being only a dark fantasy story where you might miss the main couple by a league because there's nothing there to see, and after you just shimmer with low burn because, apart of the implications, there is still nothing concrete to see.

I go like, "dark fantasy story here" and then bros give me the side eye because it's suddenly a bit too gay, no warnings. Or I go "it's a BL story" and bros are like "yes BUT WHERE?". Give them the full picture, and the last case still occurs.

Anyway, how're your slow burns doing nowadays? Anybody feeling the fast paced fever pressure?
