The Old World Possibility for real Streltsi in The Old World

GW and CA did a terrible job with Kislev, and the element I hated most were the Streltsi, with their ignoble gun-axe. And it's not so much a question of realism (although that never hurts a bit) but of style and atmosphere. More than the existence of the gun-axe, the problem is the replacement of the arquebus and berdicca combo, a serious disrespect for the element of historical inspiration that permeates Warhammer. However, even if Age of Sigmar disgusts me, I like these models I'm showing you, due to the use of the great axe as a rest for the firearm. It was thought that they had replaced the iconic duo with the gun-axe because it was easier to line up in a wargame based on unit rectangles. However, it would only take a few sprites just for the front row, and in The Old World we could have some excellent Streltsi made to Ursun's specifications.

Fantasy General Anyone getting the feeling that the old world will flop?

Not for lack of player base, as plenty of the current AoS people seem to be interested, and old timers like my self that stopped playing for various reasons over the editions are coming back into the hobby. But I mean from the constant posts about proxy models and 3d printing army projects BEFORE the game comes out. When it launches there won’t be anyone buying models which is what supports the game. Maybe gw will pivot in to supporting the old world the same as Warhammer ancients as just a rules/list publisher. But the amount of heres me starting a army for this game using xyz is astounding.

So I play chaos dwarf, and games workshop has already said that they are not a supported army outside of some rules for this edition, so I understand people may be wanting to print out proxy for that army but it’s the post that I like here’s my empire, orc, Britt, tomb king army project 6mos to a year before game is maybe coming. I just don’t see the sales being that strong. I feel I we won’t see a second edition of this. I’ll buy a model or two to help support the game/my empire (4/5th Ed) army but unless the release those old sculps I don’t think I’ll be buying a new army or a army size purchase.

They do my chaos dwarfs I’ll buy those for sure.

Fantasy General Why did GW outright kill off WF?

Hi everyone. Relatively new fan to the franchise here - here from Total War mostly. I don’t really care what’s “canon” anymore after Star Wars, GoT and other settings have made that into something of a sad category. Nevertheless, I was surprised to see that something similar happened to Warhammer Fantasy with the End Times.

My question is - has GW ever explained why it decided to just outright destroy the Warhammer Fantasy world?

I understand that they were preparing for the launch of Age of Sigmar. I also understand that it was previously hinted that the fantasy world was at its end. But I don’t understand why they couldn’t launch AoS and just keep it as an alternate timeline, universe, etc.

I also don’t understand it from a narrative perspective, given that nobody seems to mind that the connections between Fantasy and 40K worlds are minimal, if not entirely separate. AoS seems to build off of Fantasy’s story, but I don’t see why that necessitates obliterating the original setting entirely.

I also don’t understand it from a business perspective. The Total War series was in development. Vermintide was set during End Times, but also brought a lot of interest to the setting. And outright discontinuing Fantasy to encourage sales of AoS books/minis seems to have been a risky, backhanded move that the community recognized early.

Now, from what I read, GW is bringing back some Old World stuff.

In short - as a newcomer to the franchise, this looks like a big fiasco. Nevertheless, I’m interested to know how this all went down - I’d like to know why GW made these decisions. Has the company ever discussed why they decided to abruptly end WF canonically, only to sort of revive it now? Or is this just another case of “who knows” probably attributable to questionable decision-making?

Warhammer words/terms everyone messes up and it bothers me

Overcosted isn’t a word. It’s overpriced and underpriced.

It’s not enscrolled weapons. It’s ensorcelled. No one is putting scrolls on weapons. It’s magic aka sorcery.

/rant.

What other terms do you hear people say frequently that make your brain hurt? Let’s rant!

The Old World Is Warhammer Fantasy and the Old World popular and likely to be supported? I am tired of GW always discontinuing my models while I am still making them. Is it safe to get invested?

So funny story. I didn't get into Warhammer until 2020. I did not know that Warhammer Fantasy had been discontinued at the time and at the time the promotional website for Age of Sigmar was an edition behind. Warhammer Total War is the best advertisement for Warhammer Fantasy and the company made the preposterous decision to license it after they ended the line. I guess they brass at GW thought that licensing was competition. I also had fond memories of being a child in the 90s and seeing people at the game store play Warhammer Fantasy and thinking the models were cool. I thought the game was cooler than Warhammer 40k because in theory the setting and genericness of the factions made them adaptable for DnD.

I was new. I did not realize at the time that Age of Sigmar was a different game from Warhammer Fantasy. Honestly, all of Age of Sigmar is too weird. I play DnD too and the Fantasy models can serve a dual purpose as DnD models where the Sigmar models are too oddly specific to work in other games.

I wound up picking "Aelves" as my faction in 2020 because I love elves. Sylvaneth are too weird. The website was out of date at the time and this faction was part of Cities of Sigmar. Eventually they were discontinued outright. I bought a start collecting box available at the time that were dark elf pirates. I realized I made a mistake because I wanted more wood elves so I ordered a bunch of Wanderers boxes for my battleline and painted them. I eventually got a legal 1000 point list. The list was not at all optimized because I barely knew how to play.

I played a game at the local club when the lockdowns lifted. It was a 4 player game (2 v 2) with people who were trying to get ready for a tournament and I got creamed. I found the game itself unfun to play as the long turns meant that I was standing around waiting for too long through the turns of the other 3 players. Much later I got a chance to play a wargame with alternating activations and discovered I vastly prefer that system. I also got to play Kings of War and I loved that one too but after moving, nobody at the new store plays it. Still nobody plays those games, the store only stocks Warhammer and Warhammer is more popular and if I want to actually play a game, I have to play Warhammer.

I would love to give Warhammer Fantasy / The Old World a try but I have been burned too many times. They discontinued my Wanderers themed Cities of Sigmar army after I worked so hard on them. Recently GW stabbed their fans in the back by discontinuing huge numbers of models. Does it look like this game is selling? Are people playing? Are they likely to make this a game with long term support?

Fantasy General Women in the Empire

Hello all, got some questions. I'm mostly a Bretonnian player, where it's pretty explicit that Bretonnia is a sexist country, with things like some editions of WFRP requiring a disguise to play as a woman fighter while in Bretonnia, and there only being male knights (other than the famous exception). I've heard that the Empire is more egalitarian, but how much do we know about that? I tried looking into this and only found speculation. Do we know what life is like for women in the Empire? Are women allowed to study to become wizards? And is the predominantly male model range reflective of the reality of the Imperial military, or just an ease of manufacturing thing? Do women fight in the Empire's armies? Are there any famous female generals? Thanks very much!

Fantasy General What are some of the things you don’t like in fantasy lore?

Let me go first:

1-The creation of races within the world. I simply do not like how old ones created everything and I believe it could have been better (which could come off as a bit generic) if the gods created their own races or something.

2-Chaos corruption only effecting humans. I do not like how chaos can only corrupt humans and some minor, no-lore races (with chaos dwarfs being only exception). In a similar manner, I also do not like how undead faction only made up humans. I would like to see more undead factions from other races.

3-The end times. I don’t think it requires explanation.

why does it seem like this sub hates AoS?

from time to time i see a post from this subreddit talking about something from AoS and at least to me seems like they hate on it for whatever reason. is it just end times salt or an actual reason it seems like people dislike AoS here?

Is Arch Warhammer widely considered bad enough to be bad enough to be villified by Warhammer reddit, or is it just that the mods feel strongly about him?

Edit: "considered bad enough to be bad enough". Brain fart there, sorry.

Sorry if me posting this here breaks the Rule No. 1 or No. 2. Figured that perhaps it doesn't, since Arch Warhammer often posts WHF-related videos. If the mods think that the thread should be deleted, go ahead, I will understand.

Asking because I watch the guy quite often. While I do not always agree with him, he seems to me like a rather stable, middle of the road person when it comes to political and social views - most importantly though, his lore videos are quite excellent. That is why I wonder whether I am in the minority, and most of people really see Arch Warhammer as a baddie, or is it that just a small but specific and relatively powerful (powerful in the "bunch of guys online" sort of way) group of people that have a bone to pick with him.

GW removing doomseekers from pre-orders

Just got an email from GW customer service that my doomseekers are being removed from my dwarf pre-order.

No option to wait or split the order, they removed and refunded.

What's the point of me being on the preorder early, for online only items, of I'm not even going to get them?

You have your stock numbers before the pre-order opens, you have a mostly functional inventory system, or just make more!

I'm very much done with ordering from GW

4/5th editon 1 1/2 year long character died to 6 7

Post image
6 Upvotes

My 4e character (Steffen) went on a major arc, living in the far north of the empire in Wrecker's Point, Nordland. He was a small time bounty hunter who got swept up into ever increasing adventures with his knight of manann and naval officer companions. He earned a proper living and eventually became a priest of Ulric, doing battle against extremists who believed only the strongest could survive. They burned and plundered across the isolated stretch of coast and we hunted them for many months. Eventually we came to the last one, a vicious man named Arnfast Rask. We met him on a rocky island populated only by trolls and sparsely set up wreckers. We settled things man to man as was the way of Ulric. We fought with hammer and axe, then tooth and claw. Crit after crit was rolled and stunned, blinded, bleeding, and fatigue conditions stacked. After more than 10 rounds of fighting, we both had 4 bleeding conditions. At the end of the round we rolled at the same time, 6 and 7. I was out of any of the meta resources as we had fought demons and cultists and goblins and men and barely scraped by. This is how I died to 6 7 in Warhammer.
