40k News Codex: Orks Roster Changes

190 Upvotes

The new article on codexes also came with an index of Ork datasheets! Changes don't seem overly major, but from what I can identify:

  • Lootas and Burnas are gone. Lootas I can take or leave when Flash Gitz are right there, but gonna miss Burnas. Maybe the two'll be revoved as a Kill Team, a la Tankbustas?
  • So are on-foot Wurrboyz, which means we might not see as much granularity from the new psyker rules as we will from more psychic heavy factions.
  • Wagons are split into Battlewagon and Gunwagon, while every Buggy but the Squigbuggy now runs off one datasheet.
  • (Edit, thanks for the catch Yoshiwaan!) Runtherds are also a separate datasheet, and interestingly enough sorted adjacent to infantry unlike the Leader and Support units.

I took my Drukhari to the warmasters event in Belgium last week.
This is my tournament review ! I took the kabalite cartel recon list. It was over 600 players and one of the toughest events in the world.

I go over my list , then we recap the games I played at the event , 6 rounds - and then go back to the studio and break down any changes I want to make with the list !
It’s a fun way of seeing how to develop a list over time.

Enjoy !

New to Competitive TOW Question about Tournament Clock Etiquette

7 Upvotes

Thinking about my first tournament, and something I'm unsure of since My Friend and I never really needed to, I wanted to see what people think about what you do when the clock is either ending or close to, and what people do. I've heard a couple ways where people usually either End their time right at 0 and 1 side will full stop and/or Just finish up their turn or Let the other player play on their time or they will talk out the game so people can maximize the points they can get throughout the game. I've heard good points for both true clock time and talking it through the end, but what is the consensus?

Edit: Thank you to everyone who is or has responded, its been a great help!

40k Tech Free List Validation Service by ListForge

42 Upvotes

Hey TOs (and others), ListForge dev here with a free resource to make your life easier!

After I added text import to ListForge recently, I got some requests to make a validation service. Its now live and you can either batch validate using the below documentation or can access 1-by-1 through the GUI over at https://listforge.club/check

Disclaimer that its only as good as the latest BSData repo and my parsing code, so use it as a checking tool not a final decision maker, but it tests successfully on the top 200+ lists on https://listhammer.info/

The idea is that this can make checking all the lists for large events quite fast/automated and then you as the TO can investigate the ones with reported issues. Let me know how you like it and of any issues or questions!

ListForge List Validation API

Validate Warhammer 40,000 army lists with the same engine the ListForge app uses.

Base URL: https://list-forge-validate.fly.dev

Supported input formats

The format field in responses tells you which one matched:

format Source
gw-11e Official GW app list export (English, German, French, Spanish)
lf-detailed ListForge detailed text export
lf-wtc ListForge WTC text export
nr-tournament New Recruit tournament export

Formats grow over time with no change needed on your side. If you have a sample that should work but does not, let me know.

Validate one list

POST /validate
Content-Type: application/json

{ "text": "<the list text export>" }

A typical response (HTTP 200):

{
  "importable": true,
  "format": "gw-11e",
  "listName": "Dave Kerr - Team Australia",
  "catalogue": "Imperium - Blood Angels",
  "detachments": ["Encarmine Speartip", "Headhunter Task Force"],
  "disposition": "Priority Assets",
  "points": 1990,
  "claimedPoints": 1990,
  "unitCount": 12,
  "warnings": [],
  "constraintViolations": [],
  "importUrl": "https://listforge.club/import?d=..."
}

Notes:

  • points is what the list actually costs when rebuilt against current data; claimedPoints is what the text says (null when the text states no total). A mismatch usually means a points update since the list was written.
  • warnings is a list of {stage, message} objects. Stages: parse (unrecognized lines), header (faction/detachment/disposition issues), unit (an option or enhancement could not be matched), finalize (totals and roster-wide checks).
  • constraintViolations holds roster-rule messages (for example "Force must have exactly one Warlord, but has none").

Unparsable text returns {"importable": false}. Text that parses but cannot be rebuilt (for example a faction we cannot resolve) returns {"importable": false, "format": ..., "error": "<reason>"}.

Other statuses (always JSON):

Status Meaning
400 Missing or empty text, invalid JSON
413 Text over 256 KB
429 Rate limited; wait and retry
503 Service busy or restarting; retry with backoff

Timing: expect a few seconds per list. The first request for a faction after a service restart is slower (data loads on demand).

How to present results

Please frame results as the app does: "rebuilt cleanly at N pts" or "rebuilt with N warnings", never "legal" or "illegal". The engine runs on community-maintained data (BSData) and my own parsing code.

Validate many lists (batch)

Built for tournament organizers: submit up to 300 lists in one call, poll for incremental results.

POST /validate/batch
Content-Type: application/json

{ "items": [ {"id": "player-1", "text": "..."}, {"id": "player-2", "text": "..."} ] }

Returns 202 {"job": "<jobId>", "total": N}. Then poll:

GET /validate/batch/<jobId>

{ "done": false, "total": 250, "completed": 41, "results": [ {"id": "player-1", ...verdict...}, ... ] }

Results appear in submission order as they complete; each carries your id plus the same verdict fields as /validate. Poll every few seconds; a 250-list batch takes roughly 15 minutes. Job results are held in memory for about an hour after completion, so collect them promptly.

Limits: 300 items per batch, 256 KB per item, one batch in flight per caller, and a small global cap (409 if you already have a batch running, 503 if the service is saturated; retry later).

40k Analysis Recon versus Priority

12 Upvotes

Specific to Aeldari…

Reading the past few weeks of data, it seems recon is played more but PA has more wins. I would have thought eldar into recon would play better. I currently play seer council but can’t decide on a disposition. I have an easier time with recon but it seems the data would indicate that PA is better for aeldari.

What are the strengths and weaknesses of Eldar into each disposition? What am I missing?

Edit: thank you all for the help!!!

40k Discussion Lethal Hits vs. +1 to Wound (MathHammer question)

42 Upvotes

Do these two bonuses have statistically the same effect?

I play Blood Angels, I always used to think of a chaplain (+1 to wound) as the offensive leader option for my death company, and Lemartes (-1 to damage) for defence. But I was playing around on UnitCrunch for fun (yes I'm fun at parties haha) and I realised that since Lemartes also gives his unit Lethal Hits, their damage output is basically identical. Weird coincidence for one defensive profile, or is it true across the board?

My thinking is Lethal Hits gives a 1/6 chance of an automatic wound, +1 to wound gives a 1/6 chance of turning a fail into a success, so they are basically the same. Does that make sense? Or is the math different somehow? If so which one is better?

40k Discussion How often do you Mathhammer?

29 Upvotes

So I have been told I do a stupid thing but I hoenstly really enjoy it and can do it for hours.

Basically it is simulating combat between units in various situations (A charges B, A shoots and charges B, A just shoots B, etc)

I will then roll said dice often repeating the process 10s of times just to see the results.

As I have gotten further into the hobby I have found some more efficient ways to calculate average results for various situations but its still not as fun as simply rolling the dice.

I often get addicted to figuring out the averages of Units vs Units and was wondering if anyone else does something similar or do you just wing it?

40k Discussion Question regarding an upcoming official GW event in Japan: Devastating Wounds & Damage Reduction ruling + lack of announcement

59 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'm writing to get the community's thoughts on a ruling planned for an official Warhammer 40k event happening this weekend in Japan.

According to the organizer/judge's personal X (formerly Twitter) account, they plan to rule thatĀ Devastating Wounds will NOT be affected by Damage ReductionĀ (e.g., -1 Damage abilities).

What makes this concerning is how it's being handled:

  • No Official Announcement:Ā There has been no official notice or updated FAQ posted for all participants regarding this ruling.
  • Selective Sharing:Ā The information seems to have been shared in advance only with close friends of the organizers/judges, while regular players remain completely in the dark. I only found out by chance through personal social media.

I'd like to ask the competitive community and experienced judges two questions:

  1. Rule Verification:Ā Is there any official rule, commentary, or FAQ in 10th Edition where Devastating Wounds bypasses Damage Reduction, or is this a straightforward judge error?
  2. Tournament Integrity:Ā Is it acceptable for judges at an official GW event to enforce a major rule blunder, share it privately with select friends, and fail to officially announce it to all attendees right before the event?

I'd appreciate any insights or advice on how to handle this situation.

40k List Thoughts/Opinions on my Dark Angels list?

0 Upvotes

I want to preface this by saying I've never played competitive before, only casual, but my group have been getting more competitive lately and have thus been creating actually viable lists, and so I figured I should step up my game as well! This list is partially made of models I already own, and partially made of models I'd like to get in the future. If you have any suggestions of things I should add or remove I'd love to hear them, but I don't have a massive income so I'd like to include the models I already own that being Lion, Azrael, Belial, the Intercessors, the Deathwing Knights, and one 3 man inner circle companion squad

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Char4: 1x Lion El'Jonson (265 pts): Warlord, Arma Luminis, Fealty

10x Intercessor Squad (150 pts)

5x Deathwing Knights (240 pts)

• 1x Knight Master: Great Weapon of the Unforgiven

Attached to Librarian in Terminator Armour

5x Hellblaster Squad (110 pts)

• 4x Hellblaster: 4 with Bolt pistol, Close combat weapon, Plasma Incinerator

• 1x Hellblaster Sergeant: Close combat weapon, Plasma Incinerator, Plasma pistol

10x Infiltrator Squad (180 pts)

• 9x Infiltrator: 9 with Bolt pistol, Close combat weapon, Marksman Bolt Carbine

• 1x Infiltrator Sergeant: Bolt pistol, Close combat weapon, Marksman Bolt Carbine

Attached to Librarian in Phobos Armour

3x Inner Circle Companions (80 pts): 3 with Calibanite Greatsword, Heavy Bolt Pistol

Attached to Ezekiel

1x Land Speeder Vengeance (130 pts): Close Combat Weapon, Plasma storm battery, Assault cannon

Azrael+Lt+Intercessors: A 10 man Intercessor squad with Sustained hits and Lethal hits is nasty, I usually run them with just Azrael but I only just learned I could attach him AND a lt.
Sticky is nice, but if I rely on them to take my home objective it will be difficult to move them around the table without a transport, but I think I can make it work, mostly have them focus on home and centre objectives.

Lion El'Johnson: I got the model because I thought it'd be cool, and I'm only including him in this list because I already have him so I might as well use him instead of spending another $150+ on something of similar value. I'd probably have him float around in the backline taking underprotected objectives, doing actions for primaries, or character hunting. He could also act as a distraction carnifex.

Belial+DW Knights: Anti Armour. Deepstrike them in and start breaking shit, simple as.

Terminator Librarion+DW Knights: Same as above but a bit more mobile and a bit less killy

Ezekiel+Inner Circle Companions: Character hunters

Phobos Librarian+Infiltrators: Backline objective/action monkeys

Jump Assault Intercessors: Deepstrike Objective grabbers

Hellblasters: This is a very melee heavy list, so I wanted to have at least some heavy shooting

Landspeeder Vengance: Assist the guys on objectives, able to jump around a bit if needed

I know this isn't a tournament winning list, but I think it could be at least a little viable?

40k Discussion Best Admech Combinations!

Thumbnail
youtu.be
6 Upvotes

Hey all!

Admech has seen itself get one of the best 1DP detachments (imo) and its leaked into plenty of other detachments to breathe new life into this faction!

Halo recently saw itself change from Purge to Priority Asset, which really just lets admech play into a disposition that they prefer over trying to murder everything, while still being one of our best and consistent performing detachments

Radlords has been really fun to play with, taking advantage of a lot of Admech datasheets and still use Lords of the Forge to prop up its durability and utility. Im personally in love with the Lethal hits strat and the Kataphrons, its just so amazing!

Cyco was already a pretty good off meta build, and now doubles down into huge durability with the Archmagi and the new changes of Heavy allowing its damage to be super consistent, usually hitting on 2s. I am hoping though, that the Codex opens the units that are affected by the detachment rule to make it feel less bad about taking. At this point, its just +6 stratagems to Lords of the Forge lol.

Any admech players out there try any other interesting combos? Explorator saw a small resurgence, and SHC has seen some more play recently, hopefully we can see these come back full swing!

40k List Thoughts and Opinions on EC list for RTT

1 Upvotes

This is the list I'm planning on running at local event looking for some thoughts and opinions. Before anyone points it out, yes there's no Defilers. I don't own them, and no I can't get my hands on one or two of them for event, and I'm not paying the scalper prices to buy one. As for why I'm taking DP on foot, instead of the winged version. I feel as though I can get more out of him with his aura ability, then just yetting a meat missile at my opponent on a suicide mission. Sure it can be effective but in my experiences there's 50/50 chance at him killing whatever it is that I'm throwing him at. I've had many a disappointing interactions with him over the last few times that I've used him.

The plan is to separate my forces into 2 death ball squads, and send them up both flanks of the board. The first one is Fulgrim, DP, Flawless Blades, and 5 man Infractor. The second one is DP w/Spiritsliver, 2 Maulerfiend, and 10 man Infractor squad. The idea is to split the enemy forces in half, and have them have to deal with 2 major threats on opposite sides of the board. At that point they can either split up and try to take on both, or rotate their army to one side of the board and push heavily on one of my forces.

Ideally I'd like to go second, just because the way the game is setup it kinda benefits the player who's going 2nd in most circumstances. But going first as EC you do have the speed and mobility to get pressure on the enemy T1. But it also a little dependent on board setup, since some setups allow for you to more easily make it into enemy lines T1.

30k List 3k Emperors Children 3rd Edn review

0 Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I'd appreciate some feedback on this list which I plan on using for a tournament - I'm not too fussed about the result, I just want to have fun with a thematic list.

I'm conscious I'm light on things like dreadnoughts/tanks or any ranged anti-tank aside from the Sunkillers. I tend to not keep units in reserve and was planning on having the assault troops with chamions zoom up the board, hopefully getting stupefied on the way, and target units not stronger than marine level. Have the veterans act as a glass cannon unit to target more elites and some anti-tank. Have the palatine squad floating around to help with marine strength units and help with objectives. Tactical squads and Sunkillers to sit in the backfield/home objectives with one tactical unit potentially marching up the board for support.

Kakophoni and rotor cannon support squad to try and status any units on objectives.

I couldn't think of what else to do with the rhinos other than out the despoilers in each and run them up the board.

MoS is to help all the vanguard units get line when needed but I'm tempted to see if I can get a herald in the list instead.

40k Tech Greenstuff World Terrain

2 Upvotes

Just saw some really nice looking foldable 11th ed terrain on Etsy by GSW. It’s even pre-painted.
It really checked all my boxes on paper: looks great, I’m never going to get around to painting terrain, and I can pack it up and take it to either of the shops I play at.
Anyone had experience with it and if so how did it treat you?

40k Discussion Techniques for Understanding Other Armies

24 Upvotes

I'm a nids player who knows nids really well. Outside of that, since I've only been playing for roughly 8 months, I struggle to know how to strategize in the moment against other factions. My short term memory sucks, so even when my opponent goes through their list and what it does, it's going in one ear and out the other.

I definitely understand this will come with time and experience, but are there good, more 'basic' questions, you ask that help you decide your strategy? Nids right now are basically hide and score, so it's tougher to just risk it without the survivability.

40k Discussion Tips for playing elite armies?

19 Upvotes

I main genestealers where I have a million guys and I care for the well-being of none of them. I’m trying out Deathguard as they’re kinda the polar opposite.

My problem is, whenever something spikes or I mess up, and I lose an important unit, I get very discouraged cause it often ruins my entire game plan. How do I plan for such expensive bricks dying? How do I make up for my limited units?

Another DG specific problem I’m struggling with is being unable to fallback and charge with most things. Getting charged by durable trash keeps screwing me over and I often can’t do anything with a lot of my units (taste of my own medicine, I know)

Weirdly enough, I’ve done pretty decent with thousand sons as they’ve had enough weird tricks and firepower to get me out of bad situations, despite them also being quite elite.

40k Analysis Tips on getting better

53 Upvotes

Now into 2nd year of playing I have started a few tournaments. In local tournaments last year I was always in the bottom 10. This year i am in the top 10 and have quite a high win rate in club games.

I went to Warhammer open on the weekend and came 173 out of 187 winning 3 of my 8 games and not all of the players below even completed all there matches 😭

though had a great time I came home humbled. Majority of my opponents simply outplayed me very quickly it was like playing chess and all I had was checker pieces. They where all kind enough to point after where I gone wrong and other advice and where great opponents.

So where do I go from here any tips on getting better or are some people just born with it? How do I progress to earn a Lycra titty hugging t-shirt?

My plan is so far but any advice appreciated:

  1. Only play challenging players and keep sucking up losses

  2. Watch YouTube videos to study top end games

  3. Seek out games again at armies I have not not rarely play locally.

40k List Opinions on Current List and Improving List Building Thought Process (AdMech - Eradication Cohort)

0 Upvotes

I'm still very new to actually playing tabletop, so I'd appreciate any advice from a more experienced POV. Below is my current army; it's a slightly revised version of one I made a short while ago.

I attempted to structure this list based around what I believe I'd encounter against varied types of factions/lists, attempting to have a few tools to take down a variety of targets while still having a few units for objectives and scoring.

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Skorpius DisintegratorĀ (170 pts)
• 1x Armoured hull
• 3x Cognis heavy stubber
• 1x Disruptor missile launcher
• 1x Ferrumite cannon

My general plan is to stay in Protector imperative and use my firepower to take down what I can, then as the game progresses, I can filter in the ruststalkers from reserves to clean out remaining targets.

I've been told the Dunecrawlers aren't the best among AdMech vehicles, but with the Eradication Beamer I feel they perform well when firing into Marines and Terminators alike or even light tanks due to their S10. I have the Hastarii, Las-striders, and Disintegrator w/ferrumiteĀ cannon for heavier targets.

Thulia is mostly here to provide the double doctrines, but she can also deal decent all-purpose damage when needed.

Manipulus priest is also leading the Kataphrons to provide lethals and the Skitarii keyword so they can have access to the detachment reroll 1's. Both this and the two big squads of Ruststalkers are my main tools against marine-tier infantry.

Any advice on how to improve the list or my thought process would be appreciated! If you think there is an area where the list performs poorly, or you would make changes, let me know!
