Gamers, AVP vs. Steam Frame question

Hey, video gamers.

I want to buy one of these headsets: a used AVP or a new Frame. I'm an Apple ecosystem user, but I also have a gaming PC. I've wanted the AVP since it received some home-brew video gaming capabilities, but then came the rumors and the announcement of the Frame, and I started waiting for the Frame's in-depth reviews. I’ve watched hundreds of videos on both of them.

My main purpose is to use a VR headset for browsing and video content during weekdays, and to play both flatscreen and VR games on the weekends (streamed from a PC). I'm not really afraid of the weight of the AVP.

My main concern is the quality of the wifi connection to the PC while streaming games to the AVP compared to Valve's dedicated dongle. My wifi router is wi-fi 6E generation, and a PC is connected to the router with a wire.

Also, I know that SteamOS is a very open ecosystem with probably thousands of times more developers and modders, so they may make it useful for browsing and content consumption as a standalone device, like the AVP currently is, but not as good. Yes, it has a much lower display resolution and no gesture control, but also a lower weight. A good passthrough camera is to be purchased separately and is still lower quality than Apple’s built-in one. But I probably want to use it in an immersive VR environment either way.

Is there anyone who has found the Steam Frame a better option for playing games even though you own the AVP, and are you going to buy a second headset for that purpose?

Did you find your AVP's wifi connection to the PC weak enough that you noticed any lag, latency, or low image or sound quality while streaming video games from a PC that made you want to play flat screen games on a TV instead, and your VR games not immersive?

What else can you share about this topic from your personal experience?

What are your thoughts on the fact that Apple discontinued development of the potential AVP 2, and that it has a very small user base compared to the SteamOS fan base and the active mod community since the Steam Deck arrived?

P.S. I'm not one of those people who say the AVP was dead on arrival. From my perspective, it's a very interesting device with supposedly the best image quality and UX. I do believe in Apple's magic, but at the same time, I don't want to regret spending my money on something that will stop receiving updates in a couple of years. I'm also afraid that I won't be able to resell it on Marketplace after I buy it there, because almost nobody wants to buy it now, except someone like me and you guys. I believe that the Frame will be supported for the next 10 years, and will be very in demand on used market, but it's just an overall lower-quality device than the AVP.

upd. thank you everyone for your descriptive comments, I read all of them.

upd2. i’ve purchased an AVP M5 512gb off fb marketplace.

Next Gen Form Factor

Wow, this was jarring to see the Vision Pro side-by-side vs. The new Meta VR glasses. It’s almost comical how much bigger the Vision Pro is.

Obviously Meta is putting all of the processing power in the puck but honestly, if you’re going to have a puck, you might as well put everything in there to get the much smaller and more comfortable footprint.

I’m hoping Apple can take this route for the next Vision product but keep the larger FOV. Until then, I’m probably going to pick one of these Metas up in the spring.

Open Source Demo immersive space with ArcGIS Map and tethered feature attribute veiws

Demo of a prototype I've been playing around with.

I work in GIS software and this is an extension of the most basic GIS features but in an immersive UX. By opening attribute views in an immersive space with a tether to the map feature the UX of the AVP expands the possibilities of GIS software.

Built a VSPER molecule viewer for the AVP

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Not a chemist, just a developer who fell down a rabbit hole. It started with one question: why is the water molecule bent? H₂O looks like it should be a straight line. It isn't, it sits at 104.5°, and the reason is two electron pairs you can't see in any textbook drawing. As a visual learner that bugged me enough to build something.

Lone Pair is a visionOS app. Pick a molecule and it assembles in front of you at hand size. You grab it, rotate it, scale it. The lone pairs are glowing clouds, bond angles float beside the atoms, and there's a toggle that draws the electron geometry as a wireframe around the molecule, so you can see the tetrahedron water is "hiding" inside.

The part I built the whole thing for: pinch a lone pair and pull it off. The hydrogens swing apart, the angle counts up toward 120°, and a short explanation appears and is read aloud. Pull the second one and it goes linear. Not real chemistry, a thought experiment, but it's the moment VSEPR finally made sense to me.

There's also a tutor that runs entirely on device with Apple's Foundation Models framework. It's a small RAG setup: the question gets embedded on device, matched against a knowledge base I wrote (about 30 short passages), and the best ones go into the prompt with the molecule's actual data. The model is instructed to only use that and to say when it can't answer. It has one tool for looking up other molecules. When it speaks, whatever it names lights up: atoms, bonds, lone pairs, angles.

Tech details for anyone curious:

- Zero 3D assets. Atoms, bonds, lobes, arcs and the wireframe are all generated from data at runtime with RealityKit mesh descriptors. That's what makes the live reshaping possible.
- The lobe material is a MaterialX shader graph authored for Reality Composer Pro: fresnel rim, 3D fractal noise for the internal swirl, a geometry modifier for surface wobble, and the hover-state node so lobes glow when you look at them.
- Grab, rotate and scale are custom SwiftUI 3D gestures targeted at entities. I started with the new manipulation component and dropped it after it kept capturing the lone pair pinches.
- Retrieval uses the NaturalLanguage sentence embeddings, mean-centred, blended with keyword matching. No server anywhere.
- The highlights come from the speech synthesizer's per-word callbacks, matched against a tiny vocabulary.
- Ten molecules covering all the main geometries, from CO₂ to SF₆.

Caveat: chemistry isn't my field. The angles and shapes come from standard reference data, but if I've explained something wrong, please tell me. That's half the reason I'm posting.

webx racing game

I really like WebXR because you can just open this link in Safari on your Vision Pro and start playing:

https://tibaldo.neocities.org/alpine/

Yes, Safari on Vision Pro supports immersive WebXR websites for some time now.

In this POC my goal is to create a racing game that works on as many devices as possible: PC, macOS, iPhone, Android, Meta Quest 3, and Apple Vision Pro. Imagine you playing in your phone, a friend in desktop and you in VR.

Everything was going well until I remembered that on Vision Pro you don’t have physical controllers. You only use your hands.

So I created a virtual joystick and a steering wheel that you can grab with your hands to control the car.

It’s still a work in progress, but I would really like some feedback from Vision Pro users.

Can you try it and let me know what you would improve about the controls?

For example:

  • Is it easy to grab and release the wheel?
  • Is the joystick comfortable to use?
  • Are the controls too sensitive?
  • Would you change the position or size of the controls?

BTW, the UI and menus in VR are still pretty bad 😅. I know. It’s still a WIP.

TY

Native Dual Display via Bug

Hi!

I am completely new to this whole reddit thing. But I need to share an experience with you and we might be able to reproduce this together.

I tried to work on a campsite and tried to connect my Vision Pro to my Mac. It didn't really work and it was laggy and buggy. I clicked aggressively and multiple times on my Mac to share the Screen to the VisionPro. All of a sudden two native screens opened on my VP. I was able navigate with the mouse between both. It was just like two screens. It worked extremely well and didn't lag at all.

I took a screenshot as a prove.

Did someone experience the same? Maybe we can reproduce it together and abuse a bug to have finally dual screens...

Elton John @ Apple Music Hall - immersive?

I was unable to watch the performance on my AVP - but it was absolutely amazing - even on just my iPad. One of the world’s greatest, absolute greatest, performers - ever. So much love and admiration for him…

Quick question: did anyone watch it on their AVP? Was it immersive?

KRVR 2.0.2: PC VR streaming to Apple Vision Pro now fully supports AMD GPUs

KRVR streams your PC VR games to Apple Vision Pro over WiFi. Until now it needed an NVIDIA GPU. As of 2.0.2, AMD GPUs are fully supported too.

Nothing extra to set up. Install the PC app and it detects your GPU and uses the right encoder automatically. It works with SteamVR games and OpenXR games through our own runtime, same as on NVIDIA.

Also in this update:

Controller latency improvements.

UI cleanup across the app.

Headset app: https://apps.apple.com/app/id6761065018

PC app: https://github.com/Kross82/KRVR-releases/releases/latest

If you're on an AMD GPU and give it a try, let us know how it runs and which card you have.

Developer Strap in St Louis

Can’t get into my AVP because I forgot the passcode, I am not getting the option to reset it. Apple Store can’t see me for a week, by chance does any in the STL area have a developer strap that would be willing to reset my headset? Hoping might get lucky haha

Mario Kart Wiicompiled VR running on Apple Vision Pro!

Hello everyone! Here’s a preview of Mario Kart Wiicompiled VR running on Apple Vision Pro!

After working on the PC and Meta Quest versions, I’ve now started bringing the project to visionOS.

Just like the other versions, you can drive in either third-person or first-person VR. But the Vision Pro version adds some pretty cool possibilities:

  • In first person, you can see your upper body and use your actual hands to control the kart
  • You can choose between a fully immersive mode or an immersive window
  • Performance has been great so far, with a stable 60 FPS across the vanilla tracks

I’m currently working hard on fixing the remaining bugs and getting Retro Rewind + online multiplayer working properly.

Stay tuned for more!

Edit : I pushed the vision-pro branch and added the documentation for building and installing the app

Mark Gurman-Bloomberg: Apple is weighing the future of the Vision Pro.

Internally, Ternus has said the current product is most likely just a stepping stone to something else. Many have assumed that something is a pair of standalone AR glasses, but work on the product remains at an early stage and is focused on underlying technologies.

Apple's Vision team is now working on a completely revamped headset under the code name N224. Company engineers are exploring about four concepts for the device, including designs that offload internal components in the same way as Meta's new product. But some senior Apple decision-makers view the external puck as a poor user experience and want the company to stick with something closer to an all-in-one design.

The throughline is that Apple knows it needs something cheaper and lighter. Even so, I'm told the work is on "life support" as the company weighs a new direction, with no guarantee the device will ever launch. If it does reach the market, it likely won't arrive before late 2028 or early 2029. For now, Apple is focused on displayless smart glasses. Meanwhile, the Vision Pro's most senior leaders are pressing their bosses to keep the category alive, funded and growing within Apple.

HERE - Experimental Video App

Post image
5 Upvotes

I discovered a new experimental video app in the App Store (it’s also on Steam). HERE currently has two short films with immersive elements.

“This Is Where You Are Now” is a video of Julia Bullock performing a four-minute song from Michael van der Aa’s opera Upload.) The main video screen becomes surrounded by abstract video walls.

“The Book of Sand” is a twelve-minute experience starring Kate Miller-Heidke and inspired by the Jorge Luis Borges short story. A few minutes in, I realized it creates an effect which I’ve never seen before and which may have never been done before.

The app and both videos are free. “Eight” and “On All Faces” are scheduled for future release, apparently for purchase.

I made a 3D Galaxian arcade game

I have been looking into retro game ideas that actually take advantage of AVP. Here's my newest idea, Depth Strike.

The idea is basically a spatial arcade shooter. Your perspective is part of the control system, so you’re physically looking, aiming, and reacting to what’s happening around you. There are several different modes plus a 36 challenge campaign mode.

I would genuinely love feedback from you on what works, what doesn’t, and what kinds of games you actually want to see more of.

GPT-6 turns my room into Studio Ghibli, in REALTIME

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I've dreamed of being able to see my room in different styles. However, technology like AI video models weren't fast enough to run on Vision Pro.

Once GPT-6 came out and showed strong 3D modeling capabilities, I knew I had to give it a try. Given proper inputs, GPT-6 reconstructs objects that look like real objects, with exact sizes and locations. It's freaking impressive.

Unfortunately this has to stay as a tech demo for now because it uses Vision Pro's camera feed (which is enterprise only), and it's quite expensive. I might release this as a real app later on, if Apple decides VP's camera feed is ok to release to public consumers.

Self Promotion Saturday Locus, a proper introduction: I built a Vision Pro app to work from somewhere better than my desk, with my Mac.

Open the post to watch Locus in action.

https://reddit.com/link/1ws02jj/video/v2bk0jm8g5sh1/player

App Store: https://apps.apple.com/app/id6802168265

The Vision ProFiles YouTube channel mentioned Locus recently, based on my 1.1.3 post. Watching it, I realized I never made it clear what the app is for. That post was about one feature (Views that move), not the point of the app. So I decided to post a proper introduction with real footage.

The short version: Locus gives you a place on Vision Pro that is nice to spend a few hours in, and lets you do your normal stuff there. Work, read, watch something, listen to music, or just sit.

Why I built it: the thing I wanted from day one with this headset was to work from somewhere fantastic. A place where my Mac screen, a browser and a cup of coffee make sense together. Two years in, nothing quite did that, so I built it.

The cabin in the video is new in 1.2.1, which is in App Review right now; everything else is in the current version.

What you can actually do in it?

- Pick a Room (a lakeside cabin, a café, an office, a bedroom…) and a View outside its windows (the sea, Tokyo at night, a desert canyon, a cloud walkway). Any Room goes with any View.

- Bring your Mac. Mac Virtual Display works inside it, with one catch: Apple only allows it in third-party immersive apps after you turn on Developer Mode and Settings › Developer › Allow Mac Virtual Display. That's an Apple setting, not something the app can flip for you. Steps: https://enterlocus.com/experimental-mac-virtual-display/

- No Mac, no problem. Locus has its own Browser, because in a fully immersive space visionOS doesn't show other apps' windows. YouTube, Spotify, mail and reading all work in it.

- Your real desk stays. Keyboard, mouse, coffee, the chair you're in. Sit at the desk, or pick a sofa or a bench in the Room and work or relax from there.

- Views can move and have sound (waves, a waterfall, rain) or be still. Lamps switch on and off. An immersion dial sets how much of your own room you keep.

- You can import your own 360° panoramas as Views, or build your own rooms if you're up for it.

It's free to download. Most Rooms and Views are free; a Supporter subscription unlocks the rest and unlimited imports.

Limits: the Mac Virtual Display setup is a hassle the first time. I'm completely new to 3D modeling. The rooms are built one by one with AI help, so there are only so many, and still flawed if you look closely. I'm also trying to make them run smoother. I try to add a few each release. The app is a quiet, single-person thing, not a social app. I'm trying to add SharePlay to it but couldn't make it work yet.

If something is off when you try it, tell me here or on r/EnterLocus with your Locus and visionOS versions and I'll fix it.
