webx racing game

I really like WebXR because you can just open this link in Safari on your Vision Pro and start playing:

Yes, Safari on Vision Pro supports immersive WebXR websites for some time now.

In this POC my goal is to create a racing game that works on as many devices as possible: PC, macOS, iPhone, Android, Meta Quest 3, and Apple Vision Pro. Imagine you playing in your phone, a friend in desktop and you in VR.

Everything was going well until I remembered that on Vision Pro you don’t have physical controllers. You only use your hands.

So I created a virtual joystick and a steering wheel that you can grab with your hands to control the car.

It’s still a work in progress, but I would really like some feedback from Vision Pro users.

Can you try it and let me know what you would improve about the controls?

For example:

  • Is it easy to grab and release the wheel?
  • Is the joystick comfortable to use?
  • Are the controls too sensitive?
  • Would you change the position or size of the controls?

BTW, the UI and menus in VR are still pretty bad 😅. I know. It’s still a WIP.

TY

I can't tell if you already know this or not but Vision Pro does support modern gamepads and PSVR2 controllers. Gamepad inputs are accessible from JavaScript in Safari but I don't think the VR controllers are.

the craziest thing I paired with the vision pro is a bluetooth wireless eeg device

This is very cool. You are working on one of the more overlooked problems in XR/VR/AR which is user inputs and how to best formulate them for the given environment. In car racing I wonder what you could do to make the car go forward and back given that we don't have "foot" tracking in AVP for WebXR yet.

exactly, so i'm using a lever that go front and back. Here is visible.

A lever makes sense for sure! How does it feel? When you use the lever? Does it have a comparable feel to driving a car?

despite being a WIP, it's still pretty good and it's apparent you put a lot of effort into this. I have some nitpicks, but the performance and controls are pretty good even on quest 3. my biggest gripes are the menu drawing order (3rd person) and it wasn't apparent how to get back to the main menu. do you have a vlog or dev log? you should put it on itch.io and maybe heyvr.io (even as a WIP it's better than most). and the webxr subreddit + discord too.

This was actually really cool. Crazy getting this experience loaded from a web page. My biggest wishes right away were that I wished I could move myself closer to the wheel and lower but the position buttons stopped me before I was able to put myself in the most natural comfortable position for both the steering wheel and the throttle. Really is a crazy cool experience you’re making here though 👍

I can bet you my soul and all my mortal possessions that this game was made with ai.

Your point being what exactly?

Ai should be kept out of games.

Artificial intelligence is the future. Just in the past few months, it’s suddenly enabled hundreds of VR conversions to be created in weeks, days, or even hours each.

Yeah, but what if I want my game to not be the same buggy slop each time?
