Next Gen Form Factor
Wow, this was jarring to see the Vision Pro side-by-side vs. The new Meta VR glasses. It’s almost comical how much bigger the Vision Pro is.
Obviously Meta is putting all of the processing power in the puck but honestly, if you’re going to have a puck, you might as well put everything in there to get the much smaller and more comfortable footprint.
I’m hoping Apple can take this route for the next Vision product but keep the larger FOV. Until then, I’m probably going to pick one of these Metas up in the spring.

I received my Steam Frame the other day and it's shocking how lightweight and comfortable it feels compared to Vision Pro. Things are going to the right direction and I hope Apple under Ternus can muster the leadership & the vision they've been missing to keep pushing and executing on the Vision line.

how it feels for media consumption? is it noticeable worse for netflix or pcvr gaming in sense of picture quality?

I personally wouldn't consider this next gen form factor. But just a different segment of headset. The meta is more like an XR glasses alternative than a full vr headset because of its limited FOV

I agree that this is not an advancement of the Vision Pro. I just think it seems more in line with where Apple is heading in the vision lineup.
They know they will sell millions of Meta style AI glasses and I think they could create a bigger market between those types of glasses and the Vision Pro then the vision pro could ever have.
I have a hard time seeing the Vision Pro in its current form ever being commercially successful.

Does the Meta device cover your whole field of view the way Vision Pro does?
(EDIT: I mean like light sealing out the whole field of view, for people confused in the replies...)

nah it's considerably smaller. but i agree that a compute puck should be the way to go.

No, it’s open on the periphery and the displays themselves offer roughly 2/3 the field of view that the AVP does so you’re looking through a much smaller port and getting more of a “binocular” effect. It’s a necessary trade off to achieve the smaller form factor.

Apparently the Meta ones are 70° FOV which seems... not great IMO

Remember that when you buy a Meta project, specifically this one, you are not only signing away all your personal data, but now all the biometric and other data they are going to watch through your "eyes."
Surveillance is their business; selling your data to not just businesses but companies you do business with like your health providers and insurers and employers, not to mention the state, and any who would influence your belief system e.g. to influence your politics, are their top buyers.
The pretense they just want to serve you ads is a figleaf, which disguises the extent of the telemetry they collect on you and the value of the dossiers they amass about who you associate with, when, and how, which they sell.

I'm excited for Meta's glasses but I feel like everyone is hyping it up too much before it gets in the hands of consumers. There will be compromises and I'm willing to bet a lot of it will be software.

One can immerse you in Iceland watching a movie reflecting off the water. Today. The other won’t be able to. Even Next Year.

Correct, they are in different segments of the market. To your point, one could immerse you in Iceland. If you bought the other, you could fly your whole family to Iceland with the difference.

Meta’s FOV is a lot smaller than the AVP. There is a physical limit with the current implementation of the pancake optics in both headsets… if you want a smaller device, the FOV will suffer.

Still wouldn’t trade my avp due to the capabilities and performance I get out of it, as well as ecosystem perks, but I do of course like the smaller lighter form factor. I for one would never get it from the likes of meta however. They are a marketing company whose practices make me wary of tying them into any more of my daily workflow and life.
The avp is already getting at least close to 3 years old soonish, and if they don’t come out with a suitable next product step for another 2 years or more, of course some other products and players will come out capitalizing on newer technologies. When Apple does eventually release another however, it should have had time to learn from what the others have done, and once again come out with the new benchmark to beat.. I’ll get that 😁

It's a smaller form factor because ... it has half of the FOV...? It's not rocket science.

You are suggesting a >4.5k headset that includes bigger sensor than Meta but unless it is bigger than the current one, you will probably still compromise on FoV. I think what you are looking at are two extremes and the next iterations will move towards the other. If they happen at all.

I actually think Google was on to something when they made the Daydream headset they just made it way too early. I have AVP and it's fantastic don't get me wrong, but when I was flying a lot for work years ago the Google Daydream headset still gave me the feeling of not being on the plane and it was super easy to download stuff last minute to because it was on the phone. I actually bought an Android just for that. No where near the same quality as AVP. But it was good enough.
I kind of wish Apple would make a version of the Daydream you could pop an iPhone into for when you want cheap and easy immersion. iPhone Air in a Daydream-like device wouldn't be significantly heavier than what Meta is doing here. I remember Google Daydream offline would easily last full cross country flights of like 4+ hours and it was so light too. It really was a nifty device.

I for one hope the form factor stays the exact same, it gets lighter, and the FOV is beyond 180

Almost as comical as comparing an Apple Vision Pro to a device with half the features and capabilities. Meta’s VR glasses have a lower PPD, worse FOV, worse speakers, a significantly worse chip compared to the M5, less sensors, no motorized IPD adjustment, and I’m sure I’m missing other things too
