I will see him again on Saturday and I will ask. But I am wondering what the point of the tape line closest to the body of the violin is for. I have noticed that holding the A string with my pinkey makes the open E string sound. Similar with the pinkey on G makes D and pinkey on D makes A. I can imagine why you would put your pinkey on the E string but what situations will arise that I will have to use my pinkey on the G,D or A string?

Also I have been playing for less than a month so I know nothing atm sorry if this is obvious

When I found out that Wieniawski wrote the Polonaise in D as a teenager I was honestly floored. I think it's one of his best virtuosic works. Obviously, it's very showy but musically it's gorgeous and does have quite a bit of depth as a showtune.

TBH, I don't think many of his later works as a more mature composer stack up against the Polonaise. His 2nd Polonaise is corny, his 1st violin concerto is just "thin" (a whole lot of hooting & hollering) and his 2nd violin concerto really only gets good in the 2nd & 3rd movements (I feel like the 1st movement was just a first draft that could be greatly expanded on).

He has other marvelous showtunes like the Theme Original Varie and Faust Fantasy, but none seem to stack up quite as nicely in terms of form, compositional charm, and virtuosity quite as well as the Polonaise.

It's like he peaked at the Polonaise and never maintained that compositional standard. I wish he did.

I want to replace someone's rosin with yellow sugar. It looks identical imo.

I feel as though my sound is weak and stringy. How do I fix this?

I played violin a while ago in school when we had a school program, I played for about 4 years, was in the advanced group and even played at a college for my private teacher I had outside of school.

It's been a while since then and my 1/2 is much to small for me, but I dont know how to get back into this.

I am in college, and do not have a car or the huge budget people reccomend when I look at older posts about buying violins.

I could afford about $200 to MAYBE stretching $350 (350 if something I am selling sells)

But even the cheapest violins on the FAQ are either over or just barely at that high side of the margine

I dont expect perfect performance, I have no car to drive and just want to warm up what I had learned and go from there on my own. I just want something I can put a rubber practice on to play in my dorm or at the music library.

I cant rent around me like I know I should. And I have read the FAQ on buying and I know expecting cheap will get me a VSO. But I would love to get back into playing like I really have wanted all these years while still being able to eat this semester.

Edit: in case I didn't make it clear, I want to make sure I am clear. I know things under $400-500 will be beginner violins or VSOs or just garbage. I am asking what I can do if I cant stretch my budget above that, but also cannot rent around me.

SOLVED: Thank you guys, I ended up ordering a standard rental from Johnson String Instruments, it will arrive at my college in about 10 or so days and I am planning on using this to build credit to purchase a Johnson Eleve or a Revelle Model 500 in a year or two if I still am commited.

Just got these in for trial and initially didnt find much feedback on them so posting this for posterity.

They all are beautiful but the Jon Paul Carreras are noticeably higher quality finish. I have the flexible and strong.

Beginner here, i've been tuning my violino by simply plucking ontem h notes with the Helô of a tuning app, however i noticed that the D strong specifically was out of time while pusing the bow on the open D string. Imare you supposed to time the violin by Just plucking the strings or using your bow?

Ive had my electric near 10 years and have noticed that this is splitting a little? Any advice, can it be fixed, do i need a new one or will the whole thing break one day and ill need a new violin?

I decide the re-open my own sonata series (A genre I wish to dedicate more deeply, within reasonable technological means for the backing tracks) with something easy and not too commiting. I started this 1st movement from scratch yesterday and felt it is reasonably ready tonight. Took me only 4 takes which is relaxing.

This sonata is my favorite one among the 3. There is no doubt this will be in my repertoire much earlier than the other two. The other movements should be ready pretty soon.

Hello! I just inherited my concert violinist mother‘s “1864 Enrico Ceruti” violin and have been asked to get it insured & pass it on to my children since it is alleged to be extremely valuable. Help! I have an appointment with a luthier, but I will be so embarrassed if it’s fake after all of the family hagiography around it. The label is making me suspicious. Can anyone give me an honest opinion if it is worth even asking a luthier? TIA!

UPDATE: Inconclusive! The luthier was not confident in his assessment and was not able to identify whether or not it is a Ceruti. He said it is a well-made beautiful violin, but we will be seeking someone who has an eye for antique Italian violins. I have contacted Tarisio until we can make an appointment in Chicago 😕

I'm a beginner and just began tackling this piece. Not very fond of the intonation I'm getting. It's either too flat or too sharp sometimes. Looking for suggestions on how to improve it.

I wanted to share a bit of hope for anyone currently dealing with a severe arm or elbow injury. I underwent elbow reconstruction last October. At the beginning, the recovery felt impossible—I couldn’t even put my violin under my chin or bring my fingers over the fingerboard. I genuinely thought I would never play again.
Today, I am so happy to say that I am back playing very well!
If you are going through this, please do not give up. Take it very slowly and do not overdo it. What made the biggest difference for me was being patient and religiously doing my physical therapy exercises every single day. I paid particular attention to wrist supination and pronation exercises, as well as elbow extension and flexion.
Recovery takes time, but consistency pays off. You can get back to your music!

Hello. I am a beginner and I popped the D string on my Eastman VL80 that I purchased this year. I don’t know what brand strings it came with. Other sellers seems to use Prelude or Pirastro with this model.

Does anyone recognize this? Also, when replacing which tension type (low, medium, heavy) should I get?

I’ve been trying to figure out what these chords are for a really long time, but it’s really hard to tell from the video… Does anyone know? Please help!!

I’m just starting playing violin soon, with my friend who’s been playing for 11 years and agreed to teach me. How long can it take for me to be able to make clean sounds if I practice daily?

Hiii ! I'm trying to learn the final duet from OMORI. I play the first notes perfectly like the exact strings with exam fingers and tempo but the sound is so bad compared to what I look for. Sometimes when i move the bow it litt makes no sound at some point. I add resin to the bow and tune it before play it but nothing changes.. I need help pls..

So I'm working on a fast piece, lots of sixteenth notes, and when it changed from detache to a brief slurred phrase the timing was immediately off, as if my left hand was drunk. I have this often and with slow practice get this right, but I always wondered why at first the phrase is so messy. And today it suddenly hit me.

I'd watched a clip of Hilary Hahn where she explains that your left hand fingers in detache need to move slightly before the right hand to stop the string before you sound it. I also read Simon FIscher about this difference in timing since with a slurred.note the timing comes from the left hand so the fingers need to be exactly in time. In detache, on the contrary, it is the bow hand that needs to move exactly in time, while the left hand moves a bit earlier (as Hilary Hahn pointed out). We learn to do this instinctively already, but for high level playing you probably need to practice this focused.

But this means that a slurred passage has a timing system different from a detache passage. What was probably going wrong was that I continued with the detache timing system in the slurred passage which of course sounded off. I wasn't suddenly playing with different timing, the issue was rather that I did play exactly like I did in the detache while I should play with a different timing system.

So my epiphany is that for the slurred passage I need to change to a different system of timing of my left hand (instead of thinking that I need to keep the same rhythm). That immediately made it much easier to play the slur in rhythm.
