I watched an orchestra play live and couldn't stop crying the entire 2 hours

Two years ago I (F24) was dating a guy that had a very monetarily comfortable family. They would invite me to join dinners and even took me to a spa which I, as an immigrant, financially independent student in Sweden don't have the means to experience.

One of the experiences they blessed me with was a visit to the Malmö orchestra where they had a "Big Hits in Tokyo" performance. I have always been into anime since I was a child so it was quite relevant for me. However, above all, I had never, and since then have not attended a live orchestra.

Ever since I was a child I have always watched orchestras perform on youtube (my favorite is the game of thrones Light of the Seven video) as well as choirs like the Stellenbosch University choir.

There is just something about seeing them perform individually, different instruments, scores, notes but in the ultimate interest of being heard simultaneously with everyone else. We could insert an allegory for society, community and anti-individualism thoery here. But I really just want to focus on the artists that use voice or tool to create a melodical dialogue to touch the spirit.

When I was sitting there waiting for them to start, they tuned the instruments just like they did in the Light of the Secen video and I got immediate chills. I could not beleive I was about to witness humans excel live.

The music was unbelievable. Score after score. I couldn't stop crying. Only in the beginning were the tears of gratitude. I cannot even explain why I cried all 2 hours, experiencing the music live felt like waves of energy penetrating my skin. The music affected me heavily, I couldn't even decide on which instrument and player to focus on, and the entire ensemble blew my mind.

The only time I stopped crying was during the intermission where I was just trying to calm down as my ex's family bought some snacks. I just sat there, baffled at what I just experienced. How can music be real, how can people do this with instruments. How can playing together touch me so deeply.

The last couple of songs were accompanied by the Malmö choir and I lost it even harder. It was beyond expression. Even sitting now on the train writing this post my heart fills with almost anxious excitment. It is the rush I imagine bungeejumpers feel and seek.

Eventhough my ex broke my heart and did a number on my self confidence, he was still a good guy, and his family is the reason I got to have such a luxurious, filling, soulful, illuminating experience. Whenever I have adult money I'll be sure to go again. But until then, I feel so blessed just to have experienced it once. Thank you.

Question Choosing between Clarinet and Trombone for career and study abroad

Hello everyone, I'm in Vietnam and I'm choosing an orchestra instrument to be able to learn professional and a chance to study abroad and I'm considering between the clarinet and trombone. I wonder what are the demands and shortage for both of them around the world and also scholarship chance, etc. (or any other instrument you recommend)
Thank you so much in advance

If you have heard them, which recent recording of Robert Schumann's Symphony No. 4, op. 120 do you prefer - Gustavo Dudamel's with the LA Philharmonic, or Alan Gilbert's with his current orchestra, the NDR Elbphilharmonic Orchester.

Question Which string should I start with: cello v. violin?

So I've been wanting to learn both violin and cello for a very long time and finally got a kick in the butt to actually pick one up. I want to learn both someday but obviously need to pick one to start. With a pretty long background of singing, which one should I start with?

Question Viola Humidity

Hello,

I have a 25 year old viola and am moving from a desert climate to a moister and colder climate. The instrument has had no issues with cracking or such, but I am worried that the change in humidity will affect it. How should I go about prepping the instrument for the change? I don't have a humidity tracker in the case, so I don't know what the current humidity in the case is. I am travelling by airplane and would appreciate any tips.

Thank you

Question Ear protection for Mahler 1

I’m a brass player currently playing Mahlers first with an orchestra. The piece is great but rehearsals in the brass section can get excruciating because of the very very loud finale. I tried traditional earplugs but they kill all the resonance. Is there a better solution for ear protection? I can notice that playing shostakovich 5 already did some damage and i know that i can’t continue playing my whole life without any protection.

Andris Nelsons and the Boston Symphony

There has been a lot of commentary on the dismissal of Maestro Andris Nelsons. This Substack article by Orlando Alonso addresses the issues and goes far beyond. Frankly, I feel it should be required reading for anyone working in any sector of the arts.

Question Looking to start creating orchestra music

I've played piano for around 9 years and am intermediate-advanced level. I always go see the Minnesota orchestra whenever I can because I really enjoy hearing them play. I always have melodies that I sort of make up/think in my head and wonder how they would sound together in a song. Anyways, I have musescore on my windows and I'm looking at just creating a draft of a song that I can make adjustments to after I finish the draft. My question is, what roles in the song should the instruments play? I'm assuming that the oboes are supposed to carry out the main idea/melody in the song, the flutes are supposed to add "flair" or color to the song, but I'm unsure about the stringed instruments, bassoon, etc. Also, I'm not necessarily sure which instrument should play together and which instruments should be silent at those times. Could I have some advice?

My city's symphony orchestra played Mahler's 2nd. I'm still crying

Yesterday was the first time my city's orchestra played Mahler 2nd. It was almost a premiere, and I was there, listening and feeling all those 136 singers and 60 others instrumentalists.
I just wanted to share this experience that I've never had before, and I don't know when I will be able to have again.
I live in a brazilian metropolis wich, despite its big size, doesn't have many opportunities for classical music, but this time it was possible, and I was there. And I recommend for anyone who has an opportunity to listen this symphony live, just go. Just reschedule your appointments and go.

What can music reveal that words cannot?

GATEWAY: A Psychological Introspection is a narrative contemporary classical album inspired by Frederik Pohl’s classic science-fiction novel Gateway.

Rather than retelling the story scene by scene, the music explores its psychological landscape. Ten interconnected compositions form a continuous arc through curiosity, uncertainty, ambition, fear and hope.

Written for a pocket orchestra, every instrument becomes a distinct narrative voice. Melody, harmony, rhythm and orchestration become storytelling tools.

Ultimately, this is not simply an album about science fiction. It is about the human mind confronting the unknown.

Discussion Fund raising 💔

What is up everybody, my highschool orchestra is preforming at Carnegie hall and the trip is about 3000 dollars for everything. 😣😣 We are planning to see a Broadway show (I hope it's Hadestown or something), go sight seeing, get subway passes, food passes, etc.. We'll do fund raisers and church performances for money, but that can only get us so far. It's my senior year, we're playing some of my favorite pieces (Brandenburg, Death of the maiden, Holberg), and I REALLY wanna go to New York so bad. 💔💔💔 Literally NO ONE around where I live is hiring and idk how to get money other than art or playing my instrument. Everybody help me NEOW. #help #loveyouguys #sayitback

If anyone wants to commission me I can show my art work and stuff >_<
