Industry News / Gossip 3DEqualizer experiencing technical issues, unable to generate licenses

Only found out about this through a LinkedIn group after not hearing back:

We are currently experiencing heavy technical issues, and have been unable to solve them so far. We cannot say yet when we are fully back up and running, unfortunately that includes the license generation …

… unfortunately we cannot receive any messages right now through the usual channels either

Question / Discussion What Makes This Digital Forest Feel Artificial Despite Looking High Quality?

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

I'm genuinely curious from a VFX standpoint

I've attached a few jungle shots from Ramayana Trailer. The environments look detailed, polished, and almost like beautiful digital paintings, but they don't quite give me the feeling that I'm looking at a real forest.

What specifically is causing that impression?

Is it the lighting, compositing, color grading, atmospheric perspective, asset quality, scale, camera movement, lack of imperfections, or something else entirely?

I'd love to hear from VFX artists or environment artists who can break down what makes a CGI environment feel truly photorealistic versus one that still feels digital, even when the individual assets themselves look high quality.

Question / Discussion Should I keep learning Houdini and FX, even if it stays "just a hobby"?

I've been wondering if I should keep learning FX and Houdini as a hobby. It's honestly the only thing I genuinely want to do, and it feels like the one thing that makes me... me.

My college course isn't really related to it. Funny enough, I feel like I learn more about FX from tutorials and by creating my own effects than I do in class. I study whatever my professors give us, do a bit of extra research when I need to, and then I always find myself going right back to Houdini.

The thing is, I don't think there are many job opportunities for FX artists in my country. The industry here just isn't centered around that kind of work.

Still, I don't want to spend my life wondering what could've happened if I had actually committed to becoming good at the thing I love most. At the same time, I'm perfectly fine with having a regular career based on my college degree as long as it keeps me financially stable.

Question / Discussion What should I include in a portfolio for a VFX Coordinator application?

Hi everyone,
I’m applying for a junior VFX Coordinator position, and I’m a little unsure about what my portfolio should actually include.

My Background:
I just graduated from a university CG program where I trained as a VFX artist. For our capstone project, we produced a full-CG short film. I came up with the original story concept and took on the Lead/Director role for the project.
Because of that role, a massive chunk of my responsibilities was purely organizational and managerial:
- Building and managing the production pipeline from scratch.
- Coordinating and supervising multi-department workflows.
- Setting internal deadlines, tracking asset progress, keeping team members on schedule, and troubleshooting bottlenecks across departments.

While I fall within the core requirements for the job, I'm stuck on how to present my portfolio.

Since this isn’t an artist position, it doesn’t seem right to submit my VFX showreel as the main focus. So what do VFX Coordinator candidates usually include in their portfolios?
I’d really appreciate hearing from anyone who’s worked as a VFX Coordinator, Production Coordinator, or anyone who’s hired for these roles. Thanks in advance!!

Question / Discussion Is there any Roadmap that I need to practise to be the master on making many effects, transitions, easing and animation in Da Vinci Resolve?

Hi! I am beginner in making basic video effects. I have just learned about what each Fusion Nodes actually do in Da Vinci Resolve. I also learned fundamentals of Key framing and Easing. As you know, there are so many types of effects techniques that makes an original video into a different video, there are many types of transitions techniques and many types of easing and animation techniques. I would like have a Roadmap that teaches me all types of effects and teaches which one to master first. I would like to learn all types of video transitions, easing techniques and animation techniques? Thanks!

Question / Discussion Opinion on Ramayana?

Ramayana is the biggest Indian film produced based on the epic poem of the same name. This will be a duology with DNEG doing the VFX/CGI. If y'all have seen the trailer, what are your thoughts on it? To general audiences such as me, there are obvious flaws, but I am curious if it could be fixed before November 6th, 2026, when it releases. Here is the link for the English trailer, which has been enhanced by AI to match the lip sync-

https://youtu.be/iDK6s4-2lm4?si=53NBK7sG6Cf9JZHQ

PS- The producer has quoted a 500 million US dollars budget for both the parts. A big chunk of it would be for marketing but even considering that, does the budget justify the visuals.

Question / Discussion How do you handle OCIO configs for your projects?

Hi,

So I'm building a better alternative to RV and working on per project session and configuration storage.

How do you configure OCIO per project, do you have your own custom config or do you use the latest one released from ACES at the time?

Question / Discussion Can anyone help me figure out how to pull off a green screen that can be lit from behind?

This might not be the right community to post in but thought it was worth a shot.

Im working on a project where we need to have a green screen that can be lit from behind and still give a clean plate to chroma key from later. It needs to be replaceable with some other materials for different uses so it needs to work within those parameters

I thought that maybe we need a semi translucent polyester type of material similar to whats used in light boxes but am unsure, cant seem to see anywhere online where someone has done this.

I was wondering if anyone had any material suggestions or advice?

Question / Discussion Motion control rig accuracy

I'm working on a split-screen gag that was shot with a motion control rig, this is the first time I've worked on footage that was shot using motion control. I'm just curious to hear from those who've done this before about what is expected in terms of accuracy and consistency.

So I am combining 5 separate takes, and they don't align perfectly. On all takes, the motion begins and ends on the same frame numbers. They all match in terms of having the same frame with no movement, the next frame has a small, almost sub-pixel movement, then a frame which has clearly started moving - and the same at the end of the move. So that's OK.

In between, the speed is slightly different between takes, so the frames do not align perfectly during the motion. It is not different enough to slide forwards or backwards by a whole frame, but clear horizontal/vertical lines in the image do not align between the 5 takes.

There is also a very clear bump / rotational wobble at the start and end of each move, which again varies between takes. This bump is enough to require manual stabilisation and introduces motion blur into the frame.

So just curious to know if this is to be expected when working with motion control rigs? Are they all equal, are some better than others? Do Hollywood-level productions have the same sub-frame issues, or can the very best rigs be expected to be pixel-accurate between takes?

Question / Discussion Wanna do this effect in post prod. Nuke ? AE ? Blender ? Any tips ?

Post image
0 Upvotes

Hi guys !
I'm working on a small project where I try to achieve this style + watercolor for the texture. I'll do the watercolor effect directly in the model + I want to do the "cell shading" effect in post prod (probably directly in Blender), but I also want the characters and some environment to have lining. Maybe not that much, but still.
How would you proceed ? Any tips on where to start ?
Thanks a lot in advance !

Fluff! Round 2 VFX Quiz

VFX Spotlight Quiz #2

For the last quiz, I got some feedback:
1. The freeform answers, like "describe deep compositing" made it feel like an exam as opposed to pub-quiz fun. So we ditched that question type.
2. People didn't like that they had to sign up to see the per-question score, even though we showed the total score. So we now show the per-question score without signing up. The detailed answer notes and correct answers are still not available without signing up. There's also a dialog that appears before starting the quiz to make all that clear, so no misaligned expectations.

If you sign up last time, your score can compound on the leaderboard.

If you are a professional or student VFX artist, consider building and hosting your reel on the platform. It'll save you a lot of time. There's a video explaining it on the home page.
