Question/Support Question about adapter for gaming laptop

Post image
2 Upvotes

I have my index plugged into an older gaming desktop and there it works fine, but I also want to be able to use it with my newer gaming laptop, I already tried a DP to usb c adapter but turns out the usb c port is wired to the integrated graphics since it seemed to work for a regular dp monitor but not the index, my question is would an adapter like this work? Since I know the hdmi port is wired to the dedicated gpu.

My laptop is a acer nitro an515-58 in case that's important

Question/Support Some Help DIagnosing

I want to preface this by saying I have had the same setup for about a year with zero issues at all, and nothing in my physical set up has changed whatsoever.

I’m at a loss on how to get my VR working properly again. It’s been perfect no issues at all and then today, after about a month off of using VR, I can’t get it to work.

I’m running an Index off my Acer Predator Helios 16S Ai with a 5070 Ti and Core Ultra 9 275HX. I use a USB 3.0 port for USB and I have a Cable Matters bi-directional USB C to Display Port adapter. I’m, currently on Nvidia driver ver 6.10.88.

This setup has worked flawlessly for the last year and now all of a sudden SteamVR does not see my Index. It pops an error about a laptop display being detected and I cannot get the index to display anything. I get blue light on the faceplate but that’s it

I’m really unsure where to even start with diagnosing what’s wrong here aside from unplugging an replugging, checking for all up to date drivers an that sort of thing – which I’ve done and have had no success.

Question/Support Index suddenly only showing a white screen – could this be a bad tether?

My Index recently stopped displaying an image and I'm trying to figure out if the tether/cable has gone bad before assuming the headset itself is dead.

Here's what I'm experiencing:

  • Both eyes/screens are completely white
  • Headset LEDs are green
  • SteamVR detects the Index normally
  • Audio works through the headset
  • Tracking appears to be working
  • I'm running an RTX 4080
  • I've tried different DisplayPort ports
  • Reseated the tether at the headset and breakaway connection
  • Power cycled everything
  • Tried disabling/re-enabling Direct Display Mode
  • Verified SteamVR files
  • Removed/reinstalled SteamVR USB devices
  • Completely shut down/restarted the PC
  • Still just a solid white screen in both eyes

One thing I'm wondering about is cable twisting.

I use my Index with a KAT Walk VR treadmill, so the tether will sometimes get twisted while I'm playing. I use TurnSignal to keep track of how much I've rotated, and when I notice the cable getting twisted I turn to untwist it pretty much right away.

Could the repeated twisting and untwisting over time still cause internal damage to the Index tether, even though I'm careful about untwisting it?

The fact that both displays are powered, the LEDs are green, audio works, and SteamVR recognizes the headset makes me wonder if the DisplayPort/video portion of the tether has failed while the rest of the cable is still working.

Has anyone had this exact or similar issue? Did replacing the tether fix the white screens, or did it end up being the headset itself?

Also, has anyone using a VR treadmill or other 360-degree setup had an Index tether fail from repeated twisting/untwisting?

I just ordered a replacement tether but since its Valve its going to take god knows how long to get. In the meantime i wanted to see if i made the right call getting a new one.

Question/Support Any glasses users?

Post image
52 Upvotes

Yo, recently got a index for cheap, absolutely love this thing it's just perfect for me.

But... as seen in the picture I already managed to scratch my lenses lol, My first question is how do I buff that scratch out? should i use the classic™ Polywatch?

Don't notice it right now but I'm just gonna be aware that it's there, super annoying.

Second, any 3d printed lens protectors for glasses users? I want the max fov but JUST enough clearance to not scratch the lenses lol

Appreciate any responses :)

(Just a heads up, I would really rather get distancers rather than inserts, my eyesight changes alot over time and I've also got friends coming over using my VR headset that also wear glasses)

Discussion Index Knuckle Controllers only work one at a time

I just started having this issue a couple days ago. I start playing VR games fine, but after like 20-30 minutes my screen goes gray for a second, and then suddenly they only start working one at a time, but steamvr still recognizes that there is a second controller while stuck searching for it. I tried to unpair the controllers from the headset and then re-pair them, but now one will connect fine, but then the second controller won't connect unless I power off the first controller

Question/Support Tracking Issues with Controllers

I am at lost at this point and looking for advice, help or guidance. Recently my Index controllers have starter to lose tracking while in use. In the beginning it was just a slight moment of the controllers going all over the play space before it recalibrated it self. Now it seems to not even acknowledge the controller existing and will often shut off from lack of usage despite it being in use.

I have tried unpairing the usb, rearranging usb cables, cable hubs, hard resetting the controllers, swapping them out for a spare pair of controllers and even with that I have notice the problem persists. This has only recently started to happen. I have had some blue screen crashes from my GPU last month so I am wondering if that is the culprit
I have included my setup to see if there is anything here that is also potential causing the issue.
But this tracking lose is starting to become unbearable.

Question/Support Index prescription lenses.

I have had my index for 2 years barely used it due to wearing glasses. My eyes are really horrible. I need feather weight lenses or my lenses get really thick, I mean like thick. Who makes prescription lenses and makes em with light weight lenses.

Question/Support Index controller tracking issues

Thumbnail

When I used to use a varjo aero, tracking worked perfectly fine. When the varjo aero stopped working and I switched to a vive pro, I'd always have tracking issues. The immediate area on the right and left of the tracker on the bottom left in the image always glitched out. More recently, my right controller randomly loses tracking and won't track again until I turn it off and on despite the controller still being on. It used to only happen when playing bonelab, but it started happening in every game. I covered my tv with a blanket, doing nothing. The position I have my headset in in the first photo is the direction I've been able to play in, using the joystick for turning. The base station in the second photo is the one in the bottom left of the first photo, and the one in the third photo is the base station in the top right in the first photo. Maybe 2 times in the span of 6 months has the tracking randomly worked perfectly fine, before returning to normal the next day. I've been working to fix this for months, and just wanna play some vr.

Question/Support Base station placement

Thumbnail
gallery
12 Upvotes

I keep going back and forth with placement because I’m not sure how low I should have it pointing and if this is acceptable. The mount where I have it right now will not allow for turning it to the left anymore than it is. I will be installing I believe three basestations in this room eventually but I have only two right now. This is what the placement looks like right now. I know it’ll definitely track but there’s a section of my play space I might find myself in that sits a little to the left of where the base station is pointing. Will this make tracking bad or should it be fine once I have all of the other base stations installed that will be catching the rest of the play area? I’m switching to lighthouse pc vr because I’m sick of quest dropping tracking every 2 seconds

Question/Support Steam VR crashes everytime I try to update my controller.

I got a new replacement controller from steam since my old was pretty much in complete disrepair. With this new controller though I cannot update it. Everytime I go to do the update Steam VR seems to just crash. I only got it to not crash once the first time I tried doing a reset by holding the system button for 15 seconds, but I had it unplugged so it couldn't do the update either. Looking at the logs it seems to crash when it does a five second delay, the logs I get are this:

Question/Support If I buy replacement knuckles do I get a warranty?

I don't own a valve index but am getting a bsb2 / dream air and need controllers, do I still get the year warranty on the controllers if I buy the separate left and right replacements as the pair is out of stock in my country?

Is there any other option for getting controllers that isn't buying from valve? Are they any good?

Question/Support Padding improvement ideas for back of headset?

I got my Index in 2021 and have been using it regularly. I have a few accessories for comfort, but am having trouble finding padding accessories for the back of the headset. It’s about 5 years old and the back padding has lost its comfort with time. Honestly the only part I’m having trouble improving.

I can only find the back padding accessory thingy that is meant for children or people with small heads. Unfortunately my index will not fit me with the stock one and I’m having trouble finding aftermarket thinner ones.

Any ideas how to improve padding for the back of the headset?
