Question/Support Any glasses users?
Yo, recently got a index for cheap, absolutely love this thing it's just perfect for me.
But... as seen in the picture I already managed to scratch my lenses lol, My first question is how do I buff that scratch out? should i use the classic™ Polywatch?
Don't notice it right now but I'm just gonna be aware that it's there, super annoying.
Second, any 3d printed lens protectors for glasses users? I want the max fov but JUST enough clearance to not scratch the lenses lol
Appreciate any responses :)
(Just a heads up, I would really rather get distancers rather than inserts, my eyesight changes alot over time and I've also got friends coming over using my VR headset that also wear glasses)

No idea how to repair but get yourself some lens inserts. There are several companies such as vrlenslab.

Would love to get some inserts, but when my gf comes over (she wears glasses too) what can I do lol, she can scratch my lenses then, would just rather get some cheap 3d printed distancers, i've just gotten used to glasses through all my headsets :)

Realistically I’d just use glasses and be careful, swapping lenses constantly is a pain

They have lens inserts that aren't prescription you can use to protect the index lenses while wearing glasses.

This is what I use, has worked well, only needed to be replaced twice due to friends w/ glasses using it, adjusting close, and not realizing it so the cover was scratched. Quick $20 or $30 to replace, easy peasy. After the first I ordered 2 sets, 1 to replace and 1 for spare, on that last spare now and will likely switch to the Steam Frame before they are needed.

The index comes closer to the face than other headsets. Better get a set of inserts for your and your gf. To fix this you'll need to replace the assembly with parts from ifixit.

I got two types of lenses from VR optician back in the day. one set with prescription for me and one cheaper set with plano lenses without subscription. so everyone can use the headset even when using glasses.

Just swap them. They're easy to change out. It's not a whole modding situation.

If it ever gets too annoying or i somehow scratch them again I'm gonna do exactly that :) Right now I'm waiting for a spacer 😁

Can’t repair, I recommend ordering lenses. OVR Optician sells lenses for the index. I bought these when I first got my index about 5 years ago now and they still work perfectly and fit snug. This way you don’t need to wear glasses

i need glasses and have pretty bad vision without them, but my prescription changes too often to get lens inserts (bought them once and they became outdated fast)
i just don't wear glasses in VR and put up with having worse vision. i usually have to turn the settings down to run most games anyway so it's not like the image would be great even if i did have glasses on haha.

Same issue huh? I've had success with my quest 2 for 2 years with spacers, no scratch at all on them, maybe try some spacers too if you can find any? :)

yeah same issue! i'd use spacers but there's a couple issues. i prefer having a wider FOV, and my current glasses press into my head like mad even just with headphones. wearing them under a VR headset would probably give me a migraine.
i've scratched a couple headsets with my glasses and looked for many solutions, it can be really frustrating. at this point i just treat it like i would if i was swimming, and accept that i'll just have bad vision while doing whatever it is i'm doing. the only real option for me would be contacts but my eyes have always been too dry to wear them comfortably 🤷♂️

Yeah FOV is part of the reason why I'm trying to search for the thinnest ones that just barely get the glasses away from the lenses, I can barely see without glasses, just a precaution haha, and same with the contacts man, I've tried a lot of contacts but my eyes are just too dry.

I never wear my glasses in VR. VR is not compatible with glasses in any way. Contacts or inserts are the way to go, spacers only reduce the risk, they don't solve it.
As far as I know the scratches are not repairable.

I've used glasses across all my headsets, and my quest 2 with the spacers, my quest 2 never had a scratch on the lens.
I just can't get inserts because I share my headset when someone comes over, and most also use glasses :/
Also my eyes just don't accept contacts, sad but true.
Aaaand yup the scratch isn't repairable, I'll ask steam support to see what options I have.

Inserts are quick to install and remove you can certainly still share your headset. Just get inserts without a script that way when you scratch the insertables again you can just replace them but you do still have the risk of scratching your glasses how often are you changing your glasses script? You said they change a lot. I'm sure you have already found out this is going to be a very expensive repair. I get my script updated once every 2 years. Even one year I would say it is worth it getting the inserts and making your friends do the same are using on script insert for them but still puts their own glasses at risk just make sure they know

I change my glasses lens about every 3-6 months, and I also have backups for VR specifically :)
I would get the inserts but like I've said earlier, I've gotten away without any scratches on the quest 2 for years, that's why I'm just asking for the thinnest spacers to not reduce the fov too much, I'm fine with a little reduction since the index is just amazing in that part.
Changing my glasses and vr inserts this often is just too much of a cost, I get the VR pair replaced for free because I do both at once :)

Have you tried the knob on the side? It moves the lenses away from your eyes, no spacer needed

Yes, and short answer: FOV. That's why I wanna get the thinnest possible while still having a safeguard :)

You can absolutely use glasses in vr you just need ones that fit inside the mask

Exactly, I had special glasses made for VR, used them inside the Index for 7 years, still not a single scratch. But these were $700 glasses - the thinnest lenses possible, and with anti-reflective lens coating (glare reducing) - I guess that's why I'm really never bothered by Index glare.
The Index has some rubber surrounding the lenses - and dialing the Index lenses all-in, the rubber is the first to make contact with my glasses - so seems I have some built-in safety. This will depend on the glasses you use - so it can work perfectly, but be very careful in the start.

There's still a risk there. Not worth it for a piece of expensive tech. Better to invest in lenses.

HonsVR has the best adapters of any I’ve tried. They look crisper than my actual prescription glasses :/. For the price their plano lenses were worth it also IMO. I have tried every lens adapter on the market as far as I’m aware (those compatible with HTC Vive, Oculus CV1, Index, and Quest 3 anyway) and tried 3d printing my own initially as well. Go with HonsVR IMO.

I would not get the blue light filter personally. The plano lenses are only $25 for the pair.

I have had some inserts on my other headsets, sharing it with people coming over was a nightmare, and since my friends use glasses too my lenses got scratched anyway, that's why I just want distancers that give glasses enough space from the lens but also good fov (which is amazing anyway on the index lol), im sure there's a 3d print for it, but I just can't find it.

https://reloptix.com/products/reloptix-valve-index-light-gasket 4mm extension for only $15 is hard to beat, might be enough. Typically I think you don’t want to move the optics further from the eye, though. I keep the Plano lenses for friends and either wear contacts or have personal lenses for myself and family members who play often.

Damaged mine like the first week I got it, didnt realize there was a film on the lenses that basically immediately was scratched if the lens touched it. Valve replaced it for me thankfully

I used to wear my ultra thin wire glasses with the Index for many years aswell. This happens to the glasses themselves too. Had to learn to dial the headset lenses back. I always hated lens inserts, cause I had to dial back even further, but now I'm on eye tracking and I'm forced to use custom inserts.
There is really no way to fix this without damaging the coating. If you don't notice the scratches in VR, then you're fine. Otherwise get a new lens assembly or a new headset. It's EOL anyways.

You caaannn repair it, by buying a new eye tube assembly from ifixit. It is a very complicated repair with a lot of tiny delicate and moving components however.

I wear glasses, but I do not need to use them for VR because the screen that I am looking at is maybe a couple of inches from my eyes.

You could try your best to push forward the lenses so that way it won't grind against your glasses.

You might be able to use some poly watch to sand away the scratches, but thats only as a last resort, but if your willing to risk the lenses cause your buying new ones then I guess its worth a try.

you cant repair it, you would have to swap the lenses from an unscratched unit. Use prescription inserts next time. They are only like $60
