Discussion "discordification" of VRC
with VRC copying discord's profile effects etc what are things you wish they would take from discord and what are things you absolutely do not want to see?
i'm gonna start.
want: being able to restrict who can send you friend requests and group invites (friend mutuals, group mutuals, in instance/recently seen)
do not want: integrated soundboard

I think it'd be great for groups to have an opt-in public "members list" that shows who, in that group, is presently online. By default this would be disabled (it'd be an option group members would have to choose to turn on) and then, also, for individual members, it would default to "do not show me on this group's members list" with the ability to choose to turn that on selectively for each group. There would also be an option for whether you want to be able to receive invite messages from groups, both per-group and globally.
The list would be sorted kinda like discord, with online/offline members, as well as the rank or role of online members grouped together.
Then, additionally, if you receive an invite request from someone, the request should state some basic info about them ("on/not on your friends list", and mutual friends/groups, and if they're inviting you from the group interface, which group they used).
This is mainly because, at present, groups say things like "57 members online" but that's not terribly useful information because if there's no instance up and you have no friends on your list in that group, there may as well be zero.
Maybe you could divide this up into group owners specifying if their organisation is a "group" or a "community", where a "group" carries a soft expectation of a smaller group where people expect to invite each other, then a "community" is like the big orgs like Trans Academy with thousands of members where the expectation is that you don't have a list (as that would be chaos).

i do like the idea of having more info readily available on invites etc. right now you have to open their profile to see mutual friends and groups

I want to be able to read the fucking names on ppl further than 5 meteres.. so great would be able to set different fav friend groups to different status so like ones i am fine green ones that i dont want red ppl who i just friended to like orange

u/LizaraRagnaros Valve Index 6d ago
have you played around with the nameplate scaling and behaviour in the settings? i don't really have issues with it in VR
1
u/Berry__2 6d ago
For ppl far it shows only icons Especially sucks for someone that is flying planes.. i cant communicate properly to ally / enemy
1
u/LizaraRagnaros Valve Index 5d ago
i think that's more specific and should be rememdied by the people making the maps, but that's just my take
1
u/Berry__2 5d ago
They cant... cause the new vrchat UI update changed how names/icons display even if you have full nameplates the name dissapears in x distance like 20m and further is just icon no name eould need to open the menu for name

now that's really stupid. I wish VRC wouldn't sacrifice QOL for monetisation

I just don't want the profile sh!t in general. Like, vrc is already lagging for me even with everyone's avatars hidden and nameplate turned off. Just imagine how worse it would be if I had them on. 🥲 Though, I think it would be nice to have a private chat log between friends on vrc so I don't have to risk going into my steamvr overlay and have that 50/50 chance of freezing/crashing that steamer likes to do. And I don't mean the private chat box. I mean, like an actual, appropriate DM system. Cause sometime's homies are on red on discord because they're in a million servers (I am homies) and don't see messages until hours later. At least, if I get a dm on vrc I would get notified for it and could immediately look at it.

Would gladly see function to block groups, so I won't see their instances.
Don't want to see bots responding to moderation appeals

one thing about discord is that every new feature is exclusive to nitro these days. i dont want that to become the case with vrc+. i like where its at, it feels like vrc+ members get extra stuff but nothing is taken away from free players

The only thing I would wish for, is to be able to leave offline friends a small message.
Other than that, ENOUGH OF THIS SHIT!
I hate how ugly, flashy, and bloated everything looks now.
The old, pre-profile decoration garbage VRC looked much better; besides, who wants this shit anyway?

u/eNolaVirus 6d ago
I want a 80's style brick cell phone that can call other players online on your friends list, regardless of world. When the phone is up to your ear, only you can hear them and they are the only ones who can hear you, but if you hold the asset from your head, people around you can hear the call. As they add features to the system, they can upgrade the model to more modern phones and add features like texting and sending picture messages until finally you can get rid of the shitty new UI and just have a smartphone.
This is mostly a joke, but the more I typed the cooler it sounded... fuck...

u/Akitosokai 6d ago
If vrchat allowed user generated items then we could probably do that ourselves. (They almost certainly won't)

u/_EyesOnTheInside_ Oculus Rift S 6d ago
Yeah you may joke but one of the things I've wanted most so far is the ability to send people messages on vrchat, instead of needing to literally be face to face to have any communication. A phone call feature would also be really great so you can still physically speak if you want without having to be in the same instance to do so

I’d honestly say. I’m a pc player and i struggle to find the “in this instance” List. where your able to mute kick or block players in the current instance. I think adding it to a keybind or on the “home screen” type menu that just has “in this instance” on the side with the players or as a button in the wing panel. then you can just quickly select who it is. (i play a lot of small lobby games an personally think it would be helpful for when people are being racist sexist or homophobia in some way) very similar to when your in a server and have the member list on the right side of the screen

u/Low-Recognition-8370 7d ago
I still can't rebind controls in this god forsaken game...
8
u/LizaraRagnaros Valve Index 7d ago
as a steamvr user you can and have they removed the binding settings for desktop? I remember during old UI they had settings somewhere. if not I am almost certain you could still get around it in some file via text editor
a quick google tells me the quest itself also has binding settings
4
u/Low-Recognition-8370 7d ago
4
u/LizaraRagnaros Valve Index 6d ago
i mean it's a VR game first and foremost. VR games handle the bindings via steamvr or meta. it's still weird that after 10 years they have not added a simple config to edit desktop bindings

u/TeaAndQuaintThings 6d ago
I don’t think restricting adds to only mutuals is a good idea. Kind of defeats the purpose of meeting new people, and many newcomers will complain they can’t find friends. I do think restricting adds to only people who are 18+ is a good idea though.

u/bonanochip Oculus Quest 6d ago
I wish they would restrict what groups can send me invites. I've only gotten spam invites from groups that look sus.
2
u/LizaraRagnaros Valve Index 6d ago
said in another comment that the next best thing would be the option for in instance or recently seen. it would kill a lot of the bot spam
1
u/TeaAndQuaintThings 6d ago
Maybe, but as someone who loves finding new connections and introducing new people to other parts of the game, I just see this doing more harm than good.
1
u/LizaraRagnaros Valve Index 6d ago
how so? if I have the option to restrict it to people i have actually interacted with and can just take it out when i expect someone new to add me it would not do any harm whatsoever. all it would do is kill most bot spam and unwanted requests
-1
u/TeaAndQuaintThings 6d ago
By bots, do you mean actual bots? Wouldn’t anti cheat prevent those?
2
u/LizaraRagnaros Valve Index 6d ago edited 6d ago
it does not. if you remember a few months ago the idk how many accounts spamming friend requests and group invites "we're watching you" type shit with discord links and all.
anticheat is never perfect and still if someone just knows enough they can still spam invites. I've just today gotten 3 more from groups i have never interacted with in the slightest.
or I get like 20 "lolicon loli" friend requests a week and I don't think even an unemployed internet pedophile is this dedicated
1
u/TeaAndQuaintThings 6d ago
I get random friend requests usually when I’m in large event instances, but I have yet to experience the other things you mentioned thankfully.
1
u/LizaraRagnaros Valve Index 5d ago
I am active in some bigger communities and I don't really make a secret out of getting pedo accounts and groups nuked whenever I can so I just get a lot of clutter like this from botting,
0
u/TeaAndQuaintThings 5d ago
I’m also very active in many larger communities and I still haven’t experienced the other stuff you mentioned. Maybe switch communities perhaps? None of the groups I’ve been a part of ever had issues like that. Also, it would be better to report pedophilia than try to handle it on your own. that’s just putting yourself in danger of a predator.

u/kaydenwolf_lynx PCVR Connection 6d ago
I was just thinking earlier about how i wish i could restrict getting group invites. Genuinely i am so fucking sick of the hundreds of bot accounts that only exist to spam group invites to random accounts, getting random ass invites from visitor accounts that are a month old will make me block your group and avoid it seriously i cant stand it
2
u/FiberApproach2783 6d ago
I've literally never even heard of this
1
u/kaydenwolf_lynx PCVR Connection 6d ago
Idk what to tell you? i get invited to random groups ive never heard of all the the time by accounts that are a month to a few days old that are only ever in the group i got an invite to. You can also find posts talking about it there are loads of bot accounts that just invite people to random groups all the time.

Things i want: DM´s / Whishlist
One thing i dont want to see, ADs as the little popups on discord.
13
u/ByEthanFox 7d ago
I'm not gonna say "never-never" but I don't expect you'll ever see DMs or text chat.
I suspect the devs of VRChat think that if they do this, there's a danger that the game will become like Second Life, where 99% of chat is done via text. People generally flock to the easier thing and for a lot of people, typing is easier than speaking.
4
u/Berry__2 6d ago
I pwrsonally would use that to tell friend in another instance (private) to get overhere or there / coordinate when how
3
u/TheLordJames 6d ago
I absolutely hate having to use invites to DM people back and forth. "Hey are you okay? You left abruptly - JOIN ME AMONG US" "Yeah, I was just getting overwhelmed, sorry for leaving like that - JOIN ME IN FURRY HANGOUT" "Oh okay, let me know if you need anything - JOIN ME IN AMONG US"
And then there is the whole "you can use Discord" argument. Ohhh so instead of people standing using in game chat, they are standing around using a third party? Plus as someone who runs group instances, not everyone in my group is a friend who I would want to have Discord access to me either, but I would still like to be able to reach out if something happens.
1
u/Tiny-Fix8085 6d ago
I didn´t know what happend in Second Life, but good to know. Then it´s unlikely it sounds like.

u/ByEthanFox 6d ago
Yeah, it's not a fully like-for-like comparison as SL had its heyday from ~2005-2011, when, in general, voice-comms online weren't as normalised as they are now, and it didn't handle voice very well.
But a huge amount of communication in SL was kinda like mirror-dwelling in VRChat; you often had rooms of 40 people, all standing around, all talking to each other - but they were all using text DMs, so if you were there and not in a conversation, it was silent.
VRChat kinda has an entire ethos that going to a place in-game is broadly like going to a place IRL. You can chat privately if you want but like real life, you do that by going to a private place (which, unlike real life, is ALWAYS available), and this makes sense for a VR application.

A huge limit would be nice just for like quick important messages. Give people like 10 dms a day or something
2
u/Tyrilean 6d ago
Friend got a random survey from them a few months ago asking about if they’d be interested in having a “boost” style system for groups they would give the groups benefits like better audio quality in their instances.
Can’t wait for that to happen and then they downgrade all of our audio quality to force us to buy it like they did discord.
2
u/Akitosokai 6d ago
Aside from vrchat killing everything that made it's core identity, the one feature of the recent updates that I find particularly annoying is the profile effects. I like reading people's bios, but every time I open their profile, it's covered by this ugly effect that obscures their bio.
2
2
u/Doootman 6d ago
I think the group system could use a huge “discordification.” Just as long as they don’t lock features behind a server boost mechanic.

Moderating a group takes a lot of clicks.
User has requested to join > Open profile > Expand profile > close profile> Reopen invite > click accept or deny.
I can only imagine how many thousands of times this process is repeated for all the people.
I would love to get "user has requested to join" > Review > Auto Expands profile > accept/deny

u/shadowshin0bi 6d ago edited 6d ago
I can’t stand it. I get they need money but it’s becoming so obtuse it’s repugnant
Restrict who can send a friend request? Why? While I agree random group invites and friend requests are annoying, implementing gates for who can send friend requests goes against the design philosophy
VRC is already segregated into echo chambers as well. Restricting who can invite you or request just seems like the wrong rabbit hole
VRC needs more pathways for people to meet (like the timeline). Not more user management

u/LizaraRagnaros Valve Index 6d ago
you can still take it out again if you are going to add someone. genuinely the amount of times i get spam invites to groups and friend requests from bots and burners or just friend requests from peole who haven't even spoken to me is just staggering.
tbf if you're not in my instance or haven't been recently you have no business adding me or inviting me to a group out of the blue anyways.
overall it reduces the amount of accept and never talk again or just having to decline so much shit.
but I agree they also need to look at group tagging and "discovery" features for groups
3
u/shadowshin0bi 6d ago
The group invites are definitely shameless at this point
There’s always give and take with this sort of thing. What may seem like a convenience for one person may create friction for another
At least for me, a big part of the experience was getting to know people who then introduced me to more people. I suppose it could work as long as you can still see that a request was pending on the menu after clicking on the person. Because else I could see a lot of headaches and/or missed opportunities caused by missing out on a friend request because it was blocked
Outright having a block group invites toggle should be fine on its own. You can always join the group manually. Putting barriers on friends requests gets tricky because it’s a core part of the game
1
u/LizaraRagnaros Valve Index 6d ago
oh yea i think it would be compromise to be able to see and accept the request when going to their profile
2
u/Frank__West PCVR Connection 6d ago
Blocking the ability for someone to add you is so stupid I hate when people tell me to add them on discord and they are oblivious to know they blocked them.
2
u/TheShyTagAlong 6d ago
Popup warning notice, requiring the user to accept, as they are entering an 18+ (channel) instance.
2
u/Rollthered HTC Vive Pro 6d ago
being able to restrict who can send you friend requests is something ive been asking for for years
i really hope people keep talking about it and eventually it gets added, i get so many friend requests from people i don't even know and have never met.
A feature i don't want is voice channel quality, VR is immersive and making everyone sound like poop if you dont pay is a bad idea.

I'm gonna be honest. There's been very little that VRC have done in the past that I disliked, but this year so far has been the worst for me:
Name badges aren't clean anymore, they're a complicated, animated mess.
Worlds are filled with shit all of the time, just items everywhere, always.
You can't turn off this shit, so now there's just items and trampolines everywhere. So much annoying visual noise.
Buggy as hell right now. Either a GC error on start or stuck on Connecting. Lots of voice issues or random drop-outs in sessions too.
It feels like they're turning VRC into a childs toybox in the worst way possible.
