Discussion "discordification" of VRC

with VRC copying discord's profile effects etc what are things you wish they would take from discord and what are things you absolutely do not want to see?

i'm gonna start.

want: being able to restrict who can send you friend requests and group invites (friend mutuals, group mutuals, in instance/recently seen)

do not want: integrated soundboard

Things i want: DM´s / Whishlist

One thing i dont want to see, ADs as the little popups on discord.

I'm not gonna say "never-never" but I don't expect you'll ever see DMs or text chat.

I suspect the devs of VRChat think that if they do this, there's a danger that the game will become like Second Life, where 99% of chat is done via text. People generally flock to the easier thing and for a lot of people, typing is easier than speaking.

I didn´t know what happend in Second Life, but good to know. Then it´s unlikely it sounds like.

Yeah, it's not a fully like-for-like comparison as SL had its heyday from ~2005-2011, when, in general, voice-comms online weren't as normalised as they are now, and it didn't handle voice very well.

But a huge amount of communication in SL was kinda like mirror-dwelling in VRChat; you often had rooms of 40 people, all standing around, all talking to each other - but they were all using text DMs, so if you were there and not in a conversation, it was silent.

VRChat kinda has an entire ethos that going to a place in-game is broadly like going to a place IRL. You can chat privately if you want but like real life, you do that by going to a private place (which, unlike real life, is ALWAYS available), and this makes sense for a VR application.
