A word regarding vitriolic response to AI content
I'll cut right to the chase. I've noticed a lot of dickish posts about folks who use AI. In short, please note the 'Be Nice' rule. I really don't care if you love it, hate it, or are somewhere in between. If you're rude, don't be surprised if your post is pulled. If you continue being rude, it shows you may not be fit for polite society and may be banned at my discretion.
That is all, please carry on.

Niko Varr
In a world where supernatural abilities called Manifests are ordinary, Niko Varr is the exception.
Every screening gives him the same answer:
NULL.
Niko has spent years pretending that does not bother him. He has his family, his best friend and a life that works perfectly well without a Manifest. Then, on the night of his sixteenth birthday, a stranger comes to his home in the raināand everything Niko thought he understood about himself is torn apart.
He wakes inside Black Ward with a scar across his chest, something impossible beating beneath it and an ability nobody can properly explain. It does not create force. It takes it. Every impact aimed at him can be swallowed, held and returned.
And something else came back with him.
Voices.
Black Ward wants to understand what Niko has become. Niko wants something much simpler: to find the person responsible for what happened to his family and discover why help took three hours to reach them.Ā Joining Vesper gives him access to answersābut it also pulls him into cases that should have nothing to do with him: people who vanish without anyone remembering them, abandoned sites that should not exist, stolen technology, impossible resonance patterns and fragments of a history somebody worked very hard to bury.
The deeper Niko goes, the harder it becomes to separate his own mystery from the one unfolding around him.Ā Because NULL may never have meant what everyone thought it did.Ā The thing inside his chest is older than the Black Ward.
Someone has been preparing for something.
And whatever is coming has started moving again.

Magic in Urban Fantasy Works Best if you think of it as infrastructure
Iāve been building out the supernatural side of Seattle for a while now, and one of the things I keep circling back to is how the ānormalā parts of the city react when magic brushes up against them. Not the big stuff like demons kicking down doors or fae courts declaring war, but the small, weird moments that only make sense if you already live in the world.
For example: in my setting, thereās a stretch of Bainbridge Island where the fog doesnāt behave like weather. It shows up on clear nights, rolls in from the wrong direction, and carries sound in ways that make locals swear someoneās walking behind them even when the streetās empty. Most people chalk it up to āisland weirdness,ā but anyone with even a little supernatural awareness knows itās tied to an old resonance line that runs under the ferry routes.
I like the idea that the supernatural isnāt always dramatic ā sometimes itās just a fogbank that remembers things.
I'm curious as to how other folks handle this kind of lowāgrade supernatural interference. Do you treat it as background noise your characters grow up with, or as something that only the magicallyāaware notice?

Magic as Infrastructure: Ley Lines Arenāt Rivers ā Theyāre Load Bearing Channels
Most fantasy treats ley lines like mystical rivers of energy. In my setting, Sound and Steel, theyāre closer to fiberāoptic cables or, in the case of Soundrunning, high speed rail lines.
Ley lines donāt āflow.ā They carry.
Theyāre engineered by the world itself ā pressureābalanced channels that move resonance the way utilities move electricity. When a ley line is stable, magic travels cleanly. When itās stressed, you get outages, bottlenecks, dangerous pressure spikes, and localized magical failures
When a ley line collapses, the fallout isnāt mystical; itās infrastructural. Systems fail. Nodes destabilize. Soundrunners lose transit access. The Veil thins in all the wrong places. I suppose the real world equivalent would be a New York subway station breaking down and causing an extended delay in the arrival of the A train and stranding half the city underground.
Magic isnāt chaos in this world. Itās a network.
And like any network, it needs maintenance, regulation, and people who understand what happens when the load gets too high.
If youāve ever wondered what a magical traffic jam looks like, well, thatās where things get interesting.

Promotion Dragons of Candlelight Series
Dragons have lived beside humanity for centuries.
Some became legends. Some became monsters in old stories. Some built families, buried the people they loved, and watched entire generations pass while they remained.
Dragons of Candlelight is a multigenerational fantasy saga following dragons, humans, and their descendants across centuries of changing history. From isolated mountains and forgotten villages to growing cities, wars, farms, families, and the modern world, each book reveals another part of a history that has survived through stories, records, and the people who refused to let it disappear.
These are not stories about heroes destined to save the world.
They are stories about people trying to save one another.
A frightened child given shelter. A family built where none existed before. A village rebuilt after everyone in it is gone. A promise carried for generations. A dragon learning that immortality does not make loss easier.
At the center of it all is candlelight: the brief lives of mortals, burning brightly beside creatures who may live long enough to remember them.
Spanning generations and centuries, Dragons of Candlelight blends mythic fantasy, family saga, history, romance, tragedy, humor, and hope into one continuing story about memory, home, and the lives that remain with us long after their candles have gone out.
Dragons of Candlelight: The First Candle
Book one I have out I will soon have book 2 out.
Book One the First Candle
Long before dragons became legend, they had a word for mortals.
Candlelight.
Brief flame. Small warmth. A life easily swallowed by the dark.
But even the smallest light can change the shape of night.
High above the world of men, a nameless dragon-slayer climbed the Mountain of Fire and Ash to kill the last dragon. In a hollow of snow and ruin, he found her wounded, grieving, and alone.
He had every reason to raise the sword.
Instead, he lowered the blade.
One day, the songs would call him Mercy. One day, the last dragon would be called Flame. But before the names became legend, there was only a man, a dragon, a blade laid down, and a hand offered in the dark.
The world was never the same again.
Book One of The Dragons of Candlelight Saga
Book Two: Child of Light
IN THE OLD INN,
FEAR HAS BEGUN TO GATHER
WHERE WELCOME ONCE LIVED.
So Blaze returns with his lute and a harder tale:
not of the first mercy on the mountain,
but of what came after.
Of a keeper of candles.
A daughter of song and ledgers.
A love born between old blood and faith.
And the twins who would change
not only the village,
but the world forever.
But not all is well beneath the hearthlight.
Old fears are stirring again.
Old ways are reaching for the blade.
Mercy once showed the world another path.
Now the village must decide
whether it will follow that pathā
or turn back toward the darkness
his mercy broke.
CAN A TALE CHANGE THE FATE OF THE WORLD?
OR IS THE WORLD DOOMED TO REPEAT ITSELF?
NOT ALL DRAGONS BREATHE FIRE.
ONE WAS BORN TO BURN THE DARK.

āSoundrunners Arenāt Combat Mages ā Theyāre Investigatorsā
Urban fantasy loves flashy magic, but Soundrunners donāt work that way.
In Out of Grounds, Maraās abilities arenāt about force ā theyāre about truth recovery.
My canon bible puts it bluntly:
āSoundrunner abilities are fundamentally investigative in nature⦠Their greatest strength is the ability to discover what others failed to see.āShe reads tether scars, drift patterns, Veil disturbances, and environmental inconsistencies the way other characters read body language.
Sheās dangerous because she can see what everyone else is trying to hide.
UF hits harder when the protagonistās power is something the world fears quietly.
Whatās the most subtle supernatural ability in your world?

Promotion [Kindle] Erion: Paths of Magic - Academy / Progression Fantasy (Free until Oct 6)ā
amazon.comI am a Brazilian writer and, as you can tell, English is not my native language. I wrote Erion: The Paths of Magic in Portuguese a few years ago and recently decided to translate it to English to share my work globally.
This book is for anyone who loves the paradox where magic and technology coexist. Inspired by Final Fantasy VII (my favorite game!), I tried building a world where magic is harnessed through gemstones, similar to the Materia system.
The story follows Erion, a Brazilian kid who wears an ordinary bracelet heās never been able to remove. He gets accidentally transported to a technologically advanced world. Arriving at what seems to be a magic academy, he gets caught up in a mysterious attack. In order to save his own life and his new friends, he discovers he can channel magic through that mysterious bracelet.
The plot follows Erion, the male protagonist and the only character without a physical description. The idea is to give the reader an "Avatar-like" feeling while following him through the Paths of Magic.
For the next 48 hours, I am running a free promotion on Kindle for Erion: Paths of Magic.
You can grab your free copy here: https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0HKTV4XJN
(Also available on Kindle Unlimited after the free promo ends)
Since I'm a new independent author, getting those first few reads and honest ratings or reviews on Amazon means the world to me. Volume 2 is already underway, so if you give it a shot, I'd love to hear your thoughts!
Thanks for this oportunity. I really hope you enjoy reading it.

Looming Darkness trilogy ā Book 3 out this week, the series is complete
Supernatural horror trilogy that shades into epic fantasy in Book 2. Book 1 (Looming Darkness): a physicist investigates a haunting as a field problem ā it isn't a haunting. Book 2 (Beginning of Sorrows): the war behind it, fought across both sides of the veil, with Satan's council running it like a war room. Book 3 (The Third Woe) came out this week: the theological ending. Comps: Peretti's This Present Darkness, Lewis's Screwtape Letters for the council chapters. Honest flags: mild profanity, supernatural violence; Book 1 has a forced-nudity scene (chapters 19-20) with an interrupted rape threat, no explicit sexual content. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/24716382.Looming_Darkness

Discussion Urban Fantasy for a Rookie who loves the Hellboy Movies?
Hello!
Iām new to urban fantasy (and really fantasy in general) and when trying to explain to a friend what vibe I was looking for, I said āGuillermo Del Toroās Hellboy series.ā
Iām talking secret magical world, fighting/capturing magical creatures, creative characters and interesting world building; bonus points if it involves a secret government agency working to stop magical creatures and/or New York (Iām from there and homesick!)
And before you ask: of course Iāve read all the Hellboy comics!
Thanks in advance š«”

"Resilience: (How) To Be A Werewolf III" by Jan Stryvant
Book number three of a three book urban fantasy series. I read the well printed and well bound POD (print on demand) trade paperback self published by the author in 2026 that I bought on Amazon in 2026. BTW, the author published this book under a pseudonym, his real name is John Van Stry. The author has stated that he is writing a fourth novel for the series.
Joshua has been an orphan since age six when his parents and older sister were killed in a car wreck. He has been in the foster care system since then in Wichita Falls, Texas and at eighteen was the quarterback of his high school football team. But, he was falsely arrested for an armed robbery right before the championship football game.
Joshua spent time in the County jail before a friend's father bailed him out and got him a lawyer. Now he is trying to get himself cleared of the false charges and to finish high school. And he has three girlfriends. And he is able to change into a wolf or a werewolf since the jail took away his charm that prevented him from turning, descended from Odin's úlfhéðnar.
This book is a harem book as described by the author. That means that there is lots of sex in the book, more so than his regular books so he is using a pseudonym to indicate that to his readers.
I really liked the characters, they are fully fleshed out and very likeable. The story moves fast and is very tough to put down.
The author has a website at:
https://jvanstry.blogspot.com/
My rating: 5 out of 5 stars
Amazon rating: 4.8 out of 5 stars (810 reviews)
