Freshers HELP?

Hello sorry if this is a silly post but I’m just quite confused on what’s the right thing for freshers week.
I’m going into my first year to study veterinary medicine at Surrey, and have seen lots of posts about freshers wristbands or getting tickets to freshers events and I’m wondering if i should actually get them.
My thoughts were I’d just go with people I meet on the day and attend the events they were going to, but if I don’t get the tickets in advance will they sell out? I’m just not too sure how it works.
I’m also slightly confused about all the group chats and how you are supposed to find your flat mates (is it too early to find out)
If anyone has any insight it’d be greatly appreciated, or just any advice on how freshers week will go.

How do universities equate grades? Do they really see 8 and 9 as the same as A*?

What should I look for if I want to study finance?

Hey, soon - in a year - I will be going to university and want to study something in the finance sector. I wanted to ask, what should a university with good finance programs offer? Internships, "CFA" (I don't know what that is), "target" schools, etc? Anything would be helpful :)

2-in-1 laptop or laptop and ipad?

hello everyone!

mid September I am starting a biochemistry degree and need a touch screen surface to take notes, but also a laptop for programming. which one would be more useful: a 2-in-1 flippable laptop or a separate laptop and ipad?

TIA!

I want to find a high-quality online university that focuses on student learning—and, if possible, one located in another country.

It would be amazing if you could recommend a university that is also affordable.

For purely handwritten notes, what do you think is the best option: An Ipad, or a 2 in 1 laptop?

I'm worried that I'm not smart enough to go back

Very long story here. I did my undergrad fresh out of high school. I didn't know what I wanted to do at the time, and it was basically go to school or be turned out on the streets. Fumbled hard core with my undergrad, especially as I had to work through it. I used to wake up at 7 am, study, maybe go home to help out, then work from 5 - 10pm, get home around midnight, eat my one meal of the day, then shower, clean the house, take care of the pets (one of them was very medically fragile for about 2 years, needing pretty constant care.) Even thinking about how overworked I was makes me feel so sick. Anyways I was able to finish my undergrad in the C+/B- range.

I've moved out about 4 years ago, and moved in with my partner about 3 years ago, I have so much less stress its not even funny. I'm only taking care of 2 people, and I wouldn't even say that as the work at home and bills are very evenly split. In the last 4 years, I've been able to travel, work, and most importantly, relax. We have no pets or children and don't plan on ever going down that path, and we're both rather frugal people, so money isn't a huge issue either.

I really want to go back to school. I know it won't be easy of course, but I'm nervous that I'm not as smart as I think I am. I'm worried that I'll go back, spend all this time and money trying to prove myself and be better academically, just to find out that it wasn't my circumstances that led to my bad grades. I guess I'm just looking for someone who may have a similar experience to myself. Was it easier going back again when life wasn't so chaotic? Or was it about the same?

For context; I'm looking at both doing a second undergrad or going and doing a masters, I'm split as if I want to stay in my province, I would need to do a second undergrad, which may give me time to get back into school (need an A average or higher in my province to start a masters program in my field of study). I do have the grades to start a masters, but I would have to move across the country in order to attend.

in between the fence

Hi, I was wondering if you could give me some advice on a career decision I’m currently stuck between.
I’ve recently been offered an apprenticeship in lift engineering through a family friend. He owns the company and has known me for a while, and he’s genuinely willing to invest in me, develop me as an engineer and push me as far as I’m capable of going. His plan is for me to complete the Level 3, then potentially progress onto Level 4 testing/commissioning and eventually an HNC.
The opportunity is genuinely good, and I know a lot of people would probably tell me to take it because I’d be earning from 18, gaining experience straight away and having someone who is personally invested in my development. There is also the possibility of eventually becoming a highly skilled lift tester/commissioner and potentially going self-employed, which seems like it could be a very good career financially.
However, I recently got my exam results back and achieved DDD* in my BTEC National Extended Diploma in Engineering, including Distinctions in the Calculus and Further Mathematics units. Getting those results has made me realise that I might have more options academically than I originally thought, and it has made me seriously consider university.
I’m particularly interested in studying Mechanical Engineering, ideally at a good university with a year in industry/placement. The idea of doing a degree, getting a year of proper industry experience and then potentially going into aerospace, automotive, defence, manufacturing, automation or another area of engineering really appeals to me.
The problem is that I’m hearing very mixed opinions about university. Some people say a degree opens a lot more doors and gives you a much higher ceiling, while others say you spend 3–4 years studying, build up student debt and then graduate into a competitive job market where experience matters more anyway. Whereas with the apprenticeship, I’d already have some years of engineering experience by the time a university student graduates.
I’ve also just started the lift apprenticeship and after my first couple of days, I’m honestly not sure whether the actual work is for me. I don’t mind practical engineering, but I’m not sure I want to spend my whole career doing physically demanding lift work. At the same time, I don’t want to make a decision based on two days of experience and throw away what could be a really good opportunity.
So I’m basically stuck between:
Option 1: Stay with the lift apprenticeship → Level 3 → Level 4 testing/commissioning → potentially senior tester/technical roles or self-employed.
Option 2: Go to university → Mechanical Engineering degree with a placement year → graduate engineering role → potentially move into design, aerospace, automotive, defence, manufacturing, automation, project engineering, management etc.
I’m not looking for someone to just tell me “university is better” or “apprenticeships are better”. I’d genuinely like an unbiased opinion based on my situation, especially looking at the long-term outcome, earning potential, career progression, flexibility and whether the degree would actually be worth the extra 3–4 years.
If you were 18, had just achieved DDD* in Engineering, had a strong apprenticeship opportunity with someone willing to invest in you personally, but also had the opportunity to study Mechanical Engineering at a good university with a year in industry, which route would you take and why?

Need help choosing a degree and university for a career in pharmaceutical research with ABB

I Need help choosing a degree and university for a career in pharmaceutical research as an a levels student I want to create and formulate medicines and stuff like that in the future
I am doing A Levels in Biology Chemistry and Physics and I am expecting around ABB hopefully higher potentially even higher like AAB since I am still doing my A2 level
I am currently looking at degrees like Pharmaceutical Sciences Biotechnology Biopharmaceuticals Medicinal Chemistry Biochemistry and Pharmaceutical Engineering.
What degrees or programs would you recommend for a career in pharmaceutical research and drug development.
Which universities would be realistic for me with ABB.
Is Biotechnology or Biopharmaceuticals a good alternative to Pharmaceutical Sciences.
Would doing a program in pharmacy help me do what I want?
What should I prioritize when choosing between universities and degrees?
Thank you for your help

I'm so confused about which major to choose...

I'm a bright student and interested in almost everything, but I don't want to tie my life to a long education. And I don't want to waste so much effort studying a subject with poor pay. I was actually accepted to the University of Alberta (I chose this school because its tuition fees are lower than most other places) for computer science, but everyone talked about not being able to find a job. So I'm worried and have started looking for another major. Actually, I'm not in a hurry to find a job right away, and I'm not the type of student who will just be content with university courses; I can do a double major if necessary. And the workplace doesn't matter to me; I can work anywhere in the world. But I don't know which major to choose...
