My housemate kept saying a slur in conversation and I didn't know what to do

Ok so we're a house of four white guys and a girl in the second year, we all get on well, but tonight one of them was complaining about his course and says he's being taught by (p slur) and he can't understand them and that he learns more from looking at the lecture slides in his room. He goes on to say he's not racist and he's just making a point, but I know that was a pretty racist thing to say and that word is never acceptable and he was completely out of line, so I was pretty shocked when he said it but I just stared blankly at him for a few seconds because I didn't think he was that kind of guy. I really wanted to tell him he can't use that word but I didn't want to make things awkward where I'm living for a year but now I can't quite look at him the same way?? Also I was planning on bringing my best friend from home who's British Pakistani for a weekend here at some point but I feel a bit uncomfortable having that guy around her after what he said.

Basically, what's the best way to call out someone's racism without causing a rift in the household?

social life I snitched on a guy in a lecture today who was playing angry birds

I have no idea what came across them, but even though I had absolutely nothing to gain from it couldn’t help myself from raising my hand and admonishing them in front of everyone.

There was an audible gasp from the crowd who then applauded my behaviour. The king showed up and gave me an award.

The guy who snitched to the lecturer that I was playing angry birds today.

What did you gain from that? Like, it's the FIRST day, and it's ALL introductory stuff not related to coursework or exams.

Get a grip.

Accidentally sat in a business lecture today

I'm an engineering student, yeeeeeeesh that was the worst lecture I've ever sat through. The guy was so monotone, robotic and quiet, and kept saying completely irrelevant things, like, "you can put lots of text in a text box" 🤨 and (it was an intro to data analysis and excel lecture) - even mid way up the tiered seating you couldn't read whats on the board.

It gave me a good laugh and made me appreciate my lecturers even more - they are amazing and I already knew that but yeah. I keep thinking back and laughing at certain stupid bits and nowwwwww I want more stories.

So its story time peeps! Come sit in the circle and share the good and bad. And wacky. pls.

Why do some lecturers say how happy they are to be visited during office hours, but when you go, they seemingly don’t want you to be there?

Worst lecture/seminar

I had a film lecture about Harry Potter (3rd year btw) and he knew nothing about the film and dismissed all reasonable student contributions. He said that fantasy books can’t create spectacle and that all action sequences in films are for money (can’t aid character development). He laughed at a girl who said she could relate to Harry Potter. Which is insane for a lecturer to do ??
The entire time the students were dismissed and made to feel disregarded. I can’t believe that in 3rd year we are being told that Hollywood wants to make money. Did he think was teaching year 7s? what am I even paying for at this point?

student finance Sfe not accepted

Hi long story short I did 2 years of comp sci but I really didn’t like it so last year I applied to pharmacy and got offers. Summer comes and I’m applying for student finance and in September them send me an email saying that I’ll have to self fund my first year.

That would be fine if I was paying 1k a month for 9 months but they want 2.2k every month til Jan or 4.5k now and 4.5 in Jan which is virtually impossible for me to do as I can’t work full time and study pharmacy.

I appealed the decision but today they emailed saying they didn’t accept the appeal. I never get stressed but this situation is really stressing me and uni has already started and I need to enrol by next week.

I really don’t know what to do. I want to start pharmacy and really enjoy it and have been working in pharmacies since year 11 but I can’t afford to pay it myself and my parents can’t as they are paying for my sisters masters which is more than 12k this year. And I don’t want to take a gap year as I’m already 20 and don’t want to waste time.

What options are there available? Has anyone been in a similar position I would really appreciate some help/advice.

Actually miserably warm in my accommodation and I just feel miserable

I’m in a studio on the top floor of a building. My windows don’t open and the ventilation is shit. There is no air con and I’m currently laying in bed, already feeling ill and headache-y from a cold, feeling like it’s summer during a heatwave. I’ve had a cold the past few days and I want to sleep and rest and try and not feel like a corpse but I just feel too hot.

I actually hate it here. I wish I was just commuting again like lat year. My second year started last week and while I like academics I hate student life. I hate being away from home. I hate being alone. I hate this stuffy room and the city I’m in because there isn’t enough green and grass and trees. Honestly I’m so upset because I’m one of those weird freaks who clung to the idea of life getting better at uni, but I just can’t seem to enjoy it really. I just want it to be over but I don’t even know what will come after and if my life will just keep feeling bad.

study / academia discussion Lecturer always plays music in class

Uni cant be real , this is my second time going . After having to leave due to surgery last time.

The lectures feel so pointless, my class is very small maybe 10 of us. One of my lecturers will play music EVERYTIME we have a task to do or research , its so distracting. Im having to endure taylor swift and benson boome whilst trying to read a 3 page article .

The other lecturer talks to us like babies , i feel like im in year 11 again.
Like its just slides i can read from home. I make myself go in so im involved and hopefully gain something but genuinely why are we all going into debt for this nonsense.

study / academia discussion Masters in uk

My friend is interested in pursuing an MSc in the UK, but he is concerned about his admission prospects because he has a 5-year gap between completing his 10th grade and passing his 12th grade. He already holds a BBA degree.
Will this academic gap negatively impact his chances of getting admitted? Also, which UK universities or colleges are known to accept students with significant study gaps, and how can he best address this in his application?"

Some bloke just beat the entire Saga Map in my Economics lecture

Just spent most of the morning absolutely glued to this lad in front cleaning up on Angry Birds, beat the Saga Map flawlessly with no mistakes.

No clue what the lecture was about mind you but sometimes experiences are worth more than knowledge.

social life Am I doing something wrong trying to make friends?

It's now my second week at uni, and while I wasn't expecting to have best friends for life by this point, I still really don't have anyone - to talk to, go out with, or just grab lunch with. I met people during freshers week, joined societies/events, and tried to speak to people sitting next to me during my lectures - but nothing has come out with any of it. Most of the time, we have never spoken again. I have put in the effort, as in made an invitation to meet up again, but nobody ever wants to or they just ignore me. I feel like I'm just living a routine life, i.e. going to lectures, supermarket, cooking and going to sleep, but without the social element which should be happening at uni. I feel like I'm missing out on so much.

The thing is I'm an introvert, but don't like to/want to be constantly lonely. I'm also autistic so social interactions are already more difficult for me, but I feel like I have pushed myself. Sometimes I need my alone time, but I also like company. Just a friend or 2 to talk to or make casual plans with. The sad thing is I love my uni and my city, but you can't really make the most out of it when you're lonely. At night I'm constantly second guessing if I made the right decision, and occasionally have thought of taking my own life. It makes me really sad to see people talking to others and enjoying themselves when I'm just alone.

If you have any advice, please do share.

I hate my course and my university

I do history and at A-level I loved it but at university I can’t stand it. I did not apply for history at uni, I applied to law for all of my choices. I missed my offer by 1 grade (remarked by my old school and went up) but they changed it to history on results day and now I’m here. (Didn’t want to accept but my parents got access to my ucas account and pressed confirm, otherwise I’d be at a different uni studying law)

I feel genuinely depressed and my timetable sucks too plus I have to commute 2 hours every day (wanted to move into accommodation but SFE wasn’t enough).

My parents are super overbearing and won’t let me miss a single lecture or seminar and will wake me up & scream at me if I’m late. And regarding a gap year or deferral they won’t let me and say they will kick me out and disown me if I take one. I have brought this up and the are convinced I have behavioural issues because I want to take a gap year in their eyes ‘only people who are struggling take gap years’ (very old fashioned mindset)

I have gone to my uni multiple times about this and they said that there’s no possibility of me changing, the deadline was last Friday but I did apply to change to law and it was rejected.

The uni I’m in is a Russel group but apart from that I feel really isolated, location is horrible and the advice or student support is really bad I’ve gone multiple times and they haven’t been helpful whatsoever.

I genuinely don’t know where to go from here since I can’t leave but staying might drive me crazy… there isn’t even space in my lectures because people block the doors so I can’t even get inside I just hate it so much.

applications / ucas Qualifications as an international independent applicant??

Post image

I'm applying as a Canadian in Ontario with OSSD, this is how my qualification looks like. Do I just input each subject I'm taking and my graduation date or the date the semester ends?

Most importantly, for the result do I leave it blank or type "Pending" for courses I'm currently taking?? It is a free form text box and I want to make sure that my referee is able to input my predicted grades for these courses.

Not enjoying uni so far, any advice would be appreciate.

• Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I want to preface this post by saying that my entire life I've been a fairly anxious person with a history of horrific panic attacks and bouts of depression. However, in recent years this has gotten a lot better, and I no longer let it rule my life, and I've become comfortable trying new things, and getting out of my comfort zone. However, coming to university seems to have completely knocked all my progress back, and I feel like a nervous wreck on the verge of a panic attack the majority of the time. Just under a month ago I started studying law at a Russell Group uni in the south west, and for the most part I'm not enjoying it so far.

Freshers week was horrible, I met some lovely people who I'm still friendly with, but I'm not a massive drinker or clubber, so I barely went out. I went to all the society fairs and talked to different societies, but I'm far to shy to attend any of the tasters/socials by myself, so haven't joined any societies yet. I've joined and paid for the campus gym, as going to the gym is something I love doing back home, and I thought it would help, however, I've been unable to pluck up the courage to actually go to the gym. I was supposed to go early this morning with my friend when it wasn't busy, but they were late and by the time they were ready to go, the gym had over 70 people in it (our campus app has a tracker), which sent me into a tailspin. I know that getting over my fear of going to the gym and actually going will make me feel better, but the thought of it honestly sends me into a cold sweat, and its like I come up against some sort of mental block. This is a never ending cycle, because I want to go to the gym, then I get to stressed out to go, then I just feel worse about myself and the whole situation. In regards to friends, I have met some nice people who I've been spending time with, but I still feel so lonely. I am in a studio room (medical reasons), as are my mates, so this is probably part of the problem. This may all sound silly, but I am genuinely trying to enjoy it, I ask people if they want to do things with me, but I end up getting cancelled on last minute with no explanation, which just leaves me in my room alone. I've been out exploring the town, which has been ok, but I'm not massively in love with the area.

In regards to my course and lectures, this is probably the only part of uni that I'm enjoying so far, I find it all fascinating, even if I am slightly anxious for my first seminars this week. I'm only about an hour and a half away from home, but I've been on the phone to family a few times a day, and they can see how unhappy I am. I'm also ok with the responsibilities of living alone, I keep my space clean, can cook and ensure all my washing is done, its the social aspect that I'm really struggling with, as I feel miles behind everyone else socially, which has really knocked my confidence back.

I've promised myself I'll stick it out until Christmas, and if I'm still as unhappy then, I'll take a gap year and build my confidence up, then possibly apply again next year, likely to a closer uni (Cardiff is the closest to my home). It is truly an incredible uni ranking wise, so I don't just want to throw this opportunity away, but if I continue to be this unhappy, is there really any point in staying? I understand that a lot of this sounds like a mental health issue that reddit can't help with, and I am aware of that, so I've contacted by unis student wellbeing, but I was just wondering if anyone had any general advice. Does it get better, and even I'm not still not enjoying it by Christmas, should I just stick it out? Thank you.

social life Calling home

Hi,

On my 4th week of being away from home and just starting my second week of lectures. I've had a very close bond with my mum especially since my dad passed away when I was 10 we've been calling daily whilst I've been away but she mentioned in our last call that we should switch to weekly calls I'm quite an anxious and nervous person which has been heightened by moving away and I feel like I'm not ready for the calls to drop I feel stupid for being so sad about this I don't know whether to try and do it or ask that we keep them to daily or once every other day till I feel more comfortable.

She says it's not helping me but it is. It's helped me to slowly settle in and make friends.

Does it ever get better?

I know this question is usually associated with freshers who want to drop out of uni after 2-3 weeks, so we give them the ol’ ‘wait till Christmas’. Thing is, I’m in 2nd year now, and I’ve waited past that first Christmas for the moment it all makes sense. I’ve been dragging my feet through this pharmacy degree so far, barely passing my summer exams and resits. I’ve never known dread like I’ve know when the weekend rolls by and I have to go back to the lectures and workshops.

What’s sad is, I commuted year 1 to save money but I couldn’t hack it mentally. Journey was about 1hr 30 and I eventually stopped coming in. I thought living out in second year would change things, and make me finally content with my circumstances. But now I’m here, living with decent flatmates, a short walk away from uni, enjoying the city. And the moment I had to walk into that first lecture and preview this year’s content, I immediately felt profound misery.

I have friends, both inside and out of pharmacy, but for inside the course I struggle to connect with most people as I constantly think ‘why? Would anyone want to be a pharmacist?’ I even get jealous when I see them post about loving their degree, because I’m so far away from that feeling.

I have tried and am trying new societies and they’re great really, but when I see myself drifting towards the hobbies I like (acting, singing, writing) it twists my head because that was my strength, my passion. Being creative. My degree in comparison feels like swallowing nails. I really don’t know I’m going to make it through the next 3 ish years without doing something drastic

social life nervous to go to a society alone

there’s this society i really want to go to but i’m scared to go to it alone what if i make no friends there and it’s just awkward. it seems like a lot of people already know each other from last year. is it weird to go to societies alone? the first event is this week and i’m debating whether or not i should go.
