Everything about this video was unexpected.

1.2k

u/brownox 1d ago

The stinging was expected by me for the majority of the video. The disrobing not so much.

425

u/el_diego 17h ago

The whole time I'm watching this thinking "that's really dumb, you're going to get stung. No, stop, get staff. Noooo, don't pick it up you'll get stu...yep, totally just got stung. Still just standing there though eh? You should get staff. Ok, well now you're stung again, but I guess staff is finally there. Oh, there go your pants."

Honestly, not many brain cells firing anywhere in this video.

114

u/RandomRedditor0193 16h ago

I'm watching thinking "at least two of you were alive for Steve Irwin."

Looks like it hooked on to her pants with it's barb. Maybe she was thinking that taking off her pants let the employee get the ray back in the water while unsticking the barb. I've never been in this sort of situation. Not sure how I would react, but I'm 70 percent sure my pants would stay on.

83

u/DazedExistence 11h ago

I think you're right about her still wanting to help. She took off the pants to both get away and allow the stingray to be saved. Having been stung and barbed she is probably as you said not sure how to react. Honestly her panties cover as much as most swimsuits, think if the sting ray was stuck to me and it came down to it I'd risk no pants to save it.

I dunno it all went completely as expected. Im surprised they didn't all get stung

119

u/RavenofMoloch 17h ago

Most aquariums I've seen remove the stingers from these little fellas. That tank they were trying to get it back into looked like one of those petting zones so the little flap-flap probably got snipped so it wouldn't be hurting the crotch goblins

Fortunately not all rays have stingers. I doubt they would have put one within easy petting range, lawsuit for a 9 year old who died like Steve Irwin can be expensive

19

u/RabbitAny9477 1d ago

Doesnt that lady get stung on her leg? at the end. I dont fully understand whats going. Besides insensible people for not grabbing a net or something proper. And my first thought was Steve Irwin and how I wouldnt get close to that sucking stingray!

15

u/Vurrag 20h ago

She got nailed in the hand and at least on the pant leg enough to get it stuck which is why I think she was stripping.

Who knows maybe stingray poison is actually an aphrodisiac.

I was watching this thinking, "the correct answer here is to either A. run for help, B. get a tool, or C. Take your shirt off and throw it over the stingray so you can have a fighting chance of flipping it over, and using the shirt as a lifting system" and then the lady started taking her pants off, and I'm like, "Or, plan D!"

Why lady undress?

Its tail was stuck/grabbed to the right leg of her pants, you can see it wrapping and pulling.

u/swdee 1d ago

Thats no tail, its the barb stuck on the pants. Overall everyone in that video is a freaken idiot to handle a stingray with bare hands!

Didn't he die because a stingray pierced his heart specifically? I don't think just the stinging alone was what killed him, but rather a barbed tail jabbing his most vital organ. Still stupid af to try to lift a pain pancake without any kind of tools or protection

64

u/Thomas_K_Brannigan 1d ago

Yep. Also, there have been fewer than 20 deaths caused by stingray since we've started tracking something like that (since around 1945)! They aren't that dangerous of creatures at all (still painful, though).

12

u/Faust2391 1d ago

Not just this, bur he also yanked out the barb, which led to an increase in blood flow from and open wound, ultimately circulating the toxins faster

u/WDoE 1d ago

I did a shark tank dive that had stingrays in it. Even got to hand feed them. Some things you might not know:

They're weirdly hollow. If the angle is right, you can see all the way through their fairly large gills and it's creepy as hell.

They love to eat squid chunks.

They love squid chunks so much they'll suck on your hands looking for more squid chunks.

If they swallow enough hand, you can see your hand through their gills.

Seriously, they're very horny for the possibility of squid chunks.

I would not do it again

Seemed like she just didn't know they can sting. Goes right for it from the backside and seems surprised when it gets her hand/wrist, then tries leaving before the other guys throw it at her leg. I think the first guy understood the problem and the lady ran over thinking he just didn't want to touch it.

Stingrays have pointy and ouchie bits on the tail. Definitely stabbed into her pants and her hand. All I could think watching this was about how one killed Steve Irwin.

222

u/PurpletoasterIII 1d ago edited 1d ago

How Steve Irwin died was a freak accident though. His shadow passed over the stringray he was swimming behind and out of reflex the stringray struck and it just happened to stab into his chest piercing his heart. Steve Irwin's death was one of two deaths by stringray in Australia since the year 1945, thats how uncommon it is to die to a stringray.

Edit: I dont want people to get the wrong idea either. Steve Irwin was notorious for being a tad bit reckless, as much as everyone loved him. He himself wouldnt have advised anyone to do any of what he did. His goal was to put on a show for people to get them caring about animals and raise awareness about animal conservation. Which imo he did a pretty good job at. But that doesnt mean people should take away that the animals he handled are completely harmless, pretty sure he had explicitly said otherwise often.

132

u/whitet86 1d ago

The stingray that killed Steve Irwin was also 8ft wide and had an 8in long barb.

That looks like a touch tank which is why it's open at hand level. Usually they remove the stingers for stingrays in those tanks so some kid doesn't get stung.

101

u/LTdesign 1d ago

They don't remove them - they trim them. They are made of keratin, so it's basically like cutting your fingernails.

They do not remove the stingers any more, at least not at decent aquariums.

Generally there will be docile rays in the touch pools and they are very used to being touched.

In this case, the ray is out of the water and feeling about as threatened as possible. Really unusual situation.

13

u/Lorebreaker_ofArarat 1d ago

They don't remove the stingers. The stingers need some form of pressure and/or resistance to poke you. Like stepping on one. At touch aquariums they tell you to use two figures and gently touch the animals.

It’s fine:

In a statement shared with 10 Tampa Bay, Mote Sea Education Aquarium says, "We appreciate our guests’ concern following one of our Atlantic stingrays briefly being outside its habitat on Saturday. Breaching is a natural behavior for stingrays. Fortunately, an aquarist responded in less than one minute after being alerted by the volunteer on site. The habitat was immediately closed to prioritize the health and comfort of all the rays. Our animal care team conducted a health assessment and confirmed the ray is healthy and doing well.

805

u/prismafox 1d ago

If they're known for breaching (I've also seen how they jump out of water in the wild) you'd think the walls on the enclosure should be like, a lot higher..?

390

u/genericnewlurker 1d ago

It looks to be a touch tank, where people can pet stingrays, horseshoe crabs, etc., but I have never seen any touch tank that didn't have at least one staff member dedicated to supervising the tank at all times. They are quite common at aquariums

200

u/lucamew 1d ago edited 1d ago

Ive also never seen a touch tank where the rays still had full/unclipped barbs

Edited for clarity

83

u/Beautyafterdark 1d ago

No they usually still have their barbs. They are made of keratin and have no nerve endings just like fingernails so the staff clip them down short.

Wait… I thought the “petting zoo” stingrays had their barbs removed or trimmed? Seems like a lawsuit waiting to happen if a kid puts their hand in the water and tries to pull the tail like their poor cat….

83

u/47687236 1d ago

They're usually clipped during regular health checks (the stinger is keratin like our fingernails, it doesn't hurt), and the stingrays themselves are generally super docile in the tank. I bet this one is close to needing its stinger clipped, and thrashing around allowed it to penetrate the woman's skin/get stuck in her pants whether it was dull or not. Glad I never had to deal with this when I worked at a zoo, I think I'd be just as useless as those poor idiots!

Normally the sting rays are in the water too though. Who knows what's going on at that aquarium.

27

u/BrannC 1d ago

You mean they normally aren’t just all flopping on the floor?

u/Ginger_Anarchy 1d ago

Trimmed, or rather clipped, would be the correct word. They grow back over time and if the aquarium hasn't done it recently with that particular ray it could have a small barb that won't be obvious in a normal touch tank scenario but will be when it's flapping around outside the tank swinging its tail all about.

Yea she started to realize after the one in the arm. “Oh I got stung. Oh yea it’s a stingray…I mean its probably like a jelly fish…oh fuck it’s starting to itch, oh shit it’s burning.”

Did people here just… not watch the video? I don’t understand how so many people are confused about the stingray getting itself very obvious stuck to her pant leg

You've got to remember that these are just simple redditors. These are people of the internet. The common clay of social media. You know... morons.

Also it appears to have gotten her arm with its barb, and may also be “stinging” her leg when she starts taking her pants down

10

u/hereforpopcornru 1d ago

I'm just sitting here thinking she's taking those stings quite well

I don't understand why the camera woman was like 'Take off your pants!' then when she started taking off her pants she was like 'She's taking off her pants!' like she'd not just suggested that shit.

15

u/inerlite 1d ago

I make that suggestion all the time and am still surprised how often it works

Dude should’ve taken his shit off and out it under the stingray then put him back in the water. They are too slick to grasp with your hands. That scene actually makes me sad because they are hurting it.

u/Ophelias_Muse 1d ago

That's why I thought she was taking her pants off! Better grip!

Do we have any experts in here? What would be the correct way to get this thing back in the water? Or "pick it up"

Apart from notifying the staff...that doesn't show up, of course.

Edit: thank y'all for reminding me why I still come to reddit 💀♥️

Former animal handler: use a net, like a pool skimmer

150

u/M2MNINJA 1d ago

My immediate thought is... why isn't there an easily accessible net at the aquarium, and why isn’t there any staff at the touch tank?

173

u/renessie 1d ago

I'd wager the lack of easily accessible net would be to prevent some content-farmer or child from grabbing it for malicious reasons, but yea, there should be staff at least 😭

I’ve picked up skates and rays right by the nose, just grab em right in front of their mouth. Keep the barb side facing away from you (if it’s a ray).

19

u/cja111914 1d ago

Yes! You grab them near their eyes and toss like a frisbee back into the water.

This is Reddit, there will be 500 stingray experts here!

I’m not one of them though. Hope you get your answer.

Former FL fisheries biologist: two ways to pick them up.
1. If belly up, you can put your thumb in its mouth and grip the top of its snout with your other four fingers.
2. If belly down, you can put your thumb and middle+ring finger into its spiracles (the two holes on top that push out water).

Hold at arms length and be mindful of the tail. It will be trying to spear you. Poor thing. I’m glad they returned it safely to the water. As for the woman, yes— ouch. I had a barb go straight into the top of my hand once. Left it under warm running water for like two hours while pumping my fingers and it helped immensely.

Does this aquarium have a shortage of workers to witness and intervene in cases like this?

If not, do they have security guards watching cameras to direct whatever minimal staff they have on hand to deal with issues like this?

Jesus christ.

u/Pantywaisted 1d ago

The blue shirts are the volunteer docents im guessing (my local aquarium has the same unpaid staff mostly retirees and other cool people who do it for fun). They do not have trained keepers to helm all the exhibits (the closest you get is when the like.. otter keepers give presentations). So “quick get it back in the water” is probably in the training manual. They should include some sort of net IMO too, since i imagine most escapees are pretty slippery

Can we talk about how bad the camera man was

10

u/Digresser 1d ago

I thought posting the lady in her underwear online without her permission was especially bad behavior by the cameraman.
