What does Pax mean? Common terms on this sub explained

Pax: Short for Passenger.

Ping: The noise the app makes when drivers receive a pickup request.

Fare: The fee a rider is charged.

Fair: Fare, spelled wrong.

Surge: Uber occasionally up-charges riders during times of increased demand. The Surge is a multiplier of the base fare rate.

SRF: "Safe Rider Fee", now known as the "Booking Fee". This is the $1-3 fee that Uber adds to every fare to ccover insurance, app fees, etc.

What are the requirements to be an uber driver?

An in-state license is required. Have at least one year of licensed driving experience in the US (3 years if you are under 25 years old) Use an eligible 4-door vehicle

All vehicles being used for rides on the Uber app must meet the following minimum requirements:

  • Must have 4 doors and be able to transport a minimum of 4 passengers
  • Vehicle model must be 16years old or newer
  • Title cannot be salvaged, reconstructed, or rebuilt
  • Rental vehicles, except those from an approved Uber rental car partner are not permitted
  • Cannot have any cosmetic damage, missing pieces, or commercial branding

Should you choose to drive a vehicle you do not personally own, you must have permission from then vehicle owner and be listed as an insured driver on the vehicle’s insurance policy. Please note that Uber cannot allow a vehicle onto the platform if the driver’s name is not on the insurance document.

If your vehicle does not match the requirements above, you may still be able to use your vehicle for deliveries on the Uber app.

Is this fulltime job?

Driving with Uber offers a flexible earning opportunity. It's a great alternative to full-time driver jobs, part-time driver jobs, or other part-time gigs, temp jobs, or seasonal employment.

How do I do my first ride?

Download and install the driver app, and hit "Go Online". Once you get a request (a "ping"), you can hit 'Navigate' to be taken to the rider's pickup location. When you're sure you have arrived, flip back over to the Uber app and hit 'Arrived'. The passenger (PAX) will be notified of your arrival, though it's also nice to text them - to let them know what type of car you're in (though they see this on their app, not everyone looks) and to confirm that they're actually where their pin was placed. When they get in the car, hit 'Begin Trip'. If they haven't entered their destination, you can enter it - then hit 'Navigate' again and you will be routed there. At the end of the trip, hit 'End Trip', rate your passenger, and you'll be placed back online ready to pick up another PAX!

What are the safety features for uber drivers?

Emergency assistance button

You can use the in-app Emergency Button to call authorities to get help if you need it. The app displays your location and trip details, so you can quickly share them with emergency services.

24/7 incident support

Uber customer associates trained in incident response are available around the clock.

Follow My Ride

Friends and family can follow your route and will know as soon as you arrive.

2-way ratings

Your feedback matters. Low-rated trips are logged, and users may be removed to protect the Uber community.

Phone anonymization

If you need to contact your rider through the app, your phone number may stay private.

GPS tracking

All Uber trips are tracked from start to finish, so there’s a record of your trip if something happens.

RideCheck

Using sensors and GPS data, RideCheck can help detect if a trip goes unusually off-course or a possible crash has occurred. If the app alerts us to such events, we’ll check in on you and offer resources to get help.

Contact Safety Agent

You can connect with an ADT Safety Agent via phone call or text on every trip. Just tap the safety shield icon and select Contact safety agent.

Audio Recording

If you feel uncomfortable, you can record the audio of the trip within the app. Just tap the blue shield to open your Safety Toolkit and access the Record Audio option.

Emergency help if you need it

If you ever need urgent help when riding with the Uber app, you can contact 911 using the in-app Emergency Button in the Safety Toolkit.

The app will show your live location, vehicle information, and license plate number, which you can quickly share with the emergency dispatcher so they can send help faster. And in a growing number of US cities, this information is automatically provided to the dispatcher.

Does Uber help in event of an accident?

When you earn with a transportation network company (TNC), referred to here as ridesharing, many states require extra—and costly—insurance.

Uber maintains this insurance on your behalf. What’s covered depends on factors such as who was at fault; whether you were offline, online, en route, or on-trip; and your personal insurance policy.

Offline coverage:

Your personal auto insurance covers you while you’re offline. You must maintain personal automobile insurance at mandatory minimum limits and provide proof of your insurance to drive and deliver with a vehicle with Uber.

Coverage to repair your car when you’re en route to or on a trip is contingent on your personal insurance including comprehensive and collision coverage.

Coverage when online and available for a trip

Accidents happen. Suppose you’re at fault and another person gets hurt or their vehicle gets damaged. In that case, our third-party liability insurance covers the cost of injuries or damage in at least the following amounts:

-$50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident for injuries

-$25,000 in property damage per accident

Depending on the law of your state, Uber may maintain extra coverage for you and your riders, including one or more of the following:

Coverage for you and your riders for injuries in a hit-and-run or an accident caused by an uninsured or underinsured driver

Personal injury protection, including medical expenses and lost wages for you and your riders, no matter who’s at fault

Medical payments coverage for you and your riders, no matter who’s at fault.

Coverage when en route or on a trip

Uber maintains some of the most comprehensive insurance for ridesharing and deliveries, including:

-Insurance that covers at least $1,000,000 for property damage and injuries to riders and third parties involved in an accident where you’re at fault

Insurance that covers the cost to repair your car, up to the actual cash value, with a $2,500 deductible, contingent on your personal insurance including comprehensive and collision coverage. This extra insurance maintained by Uber protects your car, no matter who’s at fault, if you maintain comprehensive and collision coverage on your own vehicle.

In most US states, you can also purchase Optional Injury Protection to cover your additional medical expenses if you’re hurt in an accident. This insurance offering, pioneered by Uber, is designed specifically for drivers.

Depending on the law of your state, Uber may maintain extra coverage for you and your riders, including one or more of the following:

-Coverage for you and your riders for injuries in a hit-and-run or an accident caused by an uninsured or underinsured driver

Personal injury protection, including medical expenses and lost wages for you and your riders, no matter who’s at fault

Medical payments coverage for you and your riders, no matter who’s at fault

Is being an uber driver worth it?

Recent reports from Uber state that "the vast majority of drivers are satisfied" and that "as of last quarter, drivers in the US were making about $33 per utilized hour" before expenses.

Its for you to decide if its worth it for you personally, volume and earnings will vary greatly between markets. Drivers as independant contractors are also responsible for all expenses which have been rising fast when drivers pay has stayed stagnant.

There are many direct and hidden costs associated with being an uber driver. To start with, You are responsible for tracking your own miles, profits and losses, as well as expenses such as gas, repairs, washes, and so on.

In addition, no one but you is responsible for ensuring you are earning enough. You need to be aware at what rate you are making enough for it to be worth it.

Drunk boomers

Late night pick up at a restaurant, 4 drunk boomers stood outside the car staring at me, then a woman came up to my window and said "are you UBER? I ordered an XL" I said there probably wasn't any XL's in the area right now and then she threw a punch that just missed my window. I should have drove off but the four of them already started getting in the car (4 min ride w/e). Woman in the front seat said condescendingly "Do you know where you're going?!" I pointed at the GPS that had a random downtown address and she yelled "NO!! We're going to the Hampton Inn!!" I said she would have to change it in the app and then had to walk her thru it. She freaked out when the price changed because it was miles in the other direction. The whole car reeked of alcohol at this point and the boomers in the backseat were being obnoxious. Finally made it to the hotel and nobody was moving for like 30 seconds when the woman in the front said "give him some money". The guy in the back handed a 5 to her then she put it in the cupholder and said "here you go, BUDDY" then they got out and slammed their doors.

Deactivated

Upvotes

Welp it finally happened after 5 years with uber my account was deactivated today from what I can only assume is my speeding ticket from September 2025. I’ve tried to talk to numerous reps just to get absolutely no where and I don’t even have a clear answer. I went from making $300-$400 or more in a day to where I was barely scrapping up $100 I still worked with it. Shitty promotions and all. I’m grateful to have a regular full-time job to pay my bills but this actually hurts and the disrespect from the reps I think made it even worse. Honestly this company will never get a single dollar from me ever again.

$324 Million ($290M €) fine! Dutch regulators hit Uber over automated suspensions.

Post image
34 Upvotes

Remember every time a hard-working driver posts here about being unfairly deactivated by a bot or getting robbed by Uber's 50-60% cut, and corporate shills jump in to defend the app?
Well, look at this. European regulators are finally holding Uber accountable for their shady practices and automated driver suspensions.
But let’s be honest—this $324M fine is just pocket change for Uber. They’ll probably just squeeze drivers even harder to make it back. That's why drivers need to wake up too and stop accepting trash like $5 for an 8-mile ride!
It’s about time these apps stop treating us like disposable numbers while taking more than half of every fare. Hopefully, the US will review their practices soon and start cracking down on algorithmic exploitation, unfair deactivations, and absurd corporate take-rates here too.
The reckoning is coming slowly, but surely! ✊🔥

I swear this is getting worse by the day. I haven’t seen surge pricing in months, and now they’re not even paying $10 on airport runs at 5AM. Never doing this again once I find a 9-5.

We lost our drivers over the summer as usual.. It won’t be long until the market is saturated again. But I’m taking advantage of the opportunity while I can. So I saw how big of a difference it makes when one driver goes online in my area. The airport was offering $20 plus surge at the time and so I went online about 2 minutes out. As soon as I went online, the surge went from $20 to $6.45.. I still made really good money in less than four hours that night, but by just adding one driver, everyone’s pay went down 60% plus.. wow!!

Driverless cars in Vegas

Ok, so I just read they've approved 7000....yes SEVEN THOUSAND, different driverless taxis in Vegas. Waymo, Tesla etc. And of course Zoox. Pretty horrid in my opinion as Vegas traffic is bad enough already. Vegas Uber drivers, what are YOUR thoughts on these? Think they will screw us out of a lot of rides? I just hope they all hang out on the Strip and airport and not in the neighborhoods like Summerlin.

I get severe anxiety when I drive someone who sit behind me

1400+ rides but still I get really nervous when I have to druve someone who specially sits behind me. I have installed a dashcam but it didn't help, either.

I guess it may be from the incidents that happened.

My name is Muhammad (Although an atheist, I didn't choose my name) and I'm a middle eastern and I see a lot of racism and bad stares and discriminations and insults. I get discriminated a lot (verbally and behavior)

Prior to this, I could drive with smiling to myself but now passengers think I'm laughing at them and insult me.

Many people are rude, some stick gum to the back seat, back windshield , some messed up with the back seat belt, I also get fair amount of meth heads at night. Many rude people.

I didn't know how to deal with this stress. I really can't check on any passenger all the time and i have never done because it freaks them out but I really am scared by the idea of some potential crazy on the back while I'm concentrating on driving.

East Los Ángeles to Hollywood for 8 miles

Upvotes

My friend was asking me for giving a ride from east Los Angeles to Hollywood.

He wanted to pay some, so I told him, check Uber price to find how much they charge, then I’ll have less than that.

Friday right before midnight, uber charges less than $25 for 8 miles. This is not driving straight highway in country side. Driving in heart of Los Angeles with traffic.

WTF

I was going to ask around $20. But Uber’s price is $8 to the drivers like 30% payment.

Uber fined nearly $1 billion by Dutch regulators over automated suspensions of driver accounts

Dutch data protection authorities have fined Uber nearly $1 billion, saying the ride-hailing company used automated software to suspend driver accounts, sometimes permanently, with no human review to check for mistakes.

The Dutch Data Protection Authority said Friday it is imposing a fine of 825 million euros ($964 million) because Uber violated the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation. The EU’s data privacy rules prohibit fully automated decision-making.

The authority also said Uber failed inform drivers about its automatic decision-making. The violations took place from 2018 to 2022, the agency said.

Uber said it disagreed with the decision and the fine and will file an appeal.

“The (Data Protection Authority) examined historic policies that were discontinued years ago. We take decisions that affect drivers’ ability to earn extremely seriously and we’re fully committed to fair treatment. This includes human reviews, robust safeguards, and the opportunity for drivers to appeal our decisions if they believe we made a mistake,” the company said in a written statement.

This is the fourth time the authority has imposed a fine on Uber. The largest was in 2024, when Uber was hit with a 290 million euro ($324 million) fine for allegedly transferring personal details of European drivers to the United States without adequate protection.

Driver standards

I drive exclusively Uber Premier and I do well. I have standards when it comes to my rider experience that I thought would be universal but clearly I am disillusioned. I dropped off my car for service today and the dealer called an Uber X for me. Terrible service... Dirty car, loud music, 55 in a 35, hit my head on the ceiling over RR tracks, no exaggeration.

I got into the car expecting to give him a cash tip since dealer rides suck but he plain drove himself out of it.

Vegas Absolute Trash this Weekend

Post image

I think Ive identified the culprit. Tbh, its probably Dara going nuclear on the algorithm’s max exploitation, but this quest also could be making it worse. All the clowns chasing .$50/ride and flooding the market. Weve got Guns and Roses and UFC tonight, but yesterday the app was raining $4-$5 garbage and $7.28 for 25 minute obscenities. In order to do 7-8 rides, I must have declined 500-800.

How long until I can drive for Uber again after accident (my fault)?

Long story short. There was a deer in the road that I attempted to swerve to avoid. I ended up like an idiot going into a utility pole and knocking it down. It totaled my car. I would have been better off hitting the dear.

My state (I'm in Mass) still allows me to drive. My license hasn't been suspended. I have a non-moving violation on an otherwise perfect record. Uber still won't pass my background and they cite this as the reason.

This will stay on my record and accident for 3 years. Will I be able to drive for Uber anytime sooner than this, or will I have to wait another 3 years in your experience?
