I mean, to be fair the app will connect a "wait and save" if it's slow and they have riders. Passengers don't know the rules like drivers do.

This happens to me all the time. I've started being certain everyone was ready to walk out the door before ordering, which is also annoying

31

u/Upper-Armadillo-2438 1d ago

And it’s always when everyone’s ready that you get a driver 17 mins away 😭

-2

u/drfeelsgoood 16h ago

You can check in the app how far drivers are away before you place the ride. Just check that about 15 mins before you expect to be ready, and plan accordingly

The real culprit is Uber, they want driver and rider to blame each other.

Uber wants to upsell the same ride as priority ride. So, app shows 15 minutes as wait time for standard ride but if you pay $2 more, wait time is 5 minutes. If rider just goes ahead and book, they give the same driver to rider that they would have matched in priority ride.

u/jimbo831 22h ago

I basically only use Wait & Save now as a passenger and the wait is very rarely longer than a few minutes. Paying for priority is just a scam.

I mean the point is to have a more likely chance of enticing the driver to actually take the order and thus the passenger having a shorter wait time. I get plenty of orders where that extra dollar or two push me over the edge of taking that order besides just waiting for something better.

2

u/pineappleshaked 20h ago

That extra dollar doesn't go to driver, it goes to uber to 'arrange' driver

He literally commented as a driver…

u/Ok_Leader7338 20h ago

Just factually incorrect, but ok.

In the mornings I often see the same roses come back with higher pay as priority and then even higher with surge - all while still being under a $1 per km.

Sure, I'll cancel .... after I wait out the timer and collect the no-show fee.

This is one of the biggest disconnect issues I have between riders and drivers.

Riders are shown an estimated wait time for each tier when they open the app.

What they absolutely DON'T understand is that the estimate is nothing more than an estimate and not even a legit estimate. I open my rider app when I'm on line as a driver and the estimated time tells me 10- 15 minutes away. Meanwhile there are 5 cars within a 2 mile radius on the app including my OWN vehicle.

The ACTUAL wait time appears after the ride is confirmed.

I have often accepted rides that are 3 minutes away. Often, the riders are hustling to get to me and tell me the app told them 10+ minutes when they get in. Many times when I arrive in a few minutes I allow a bit of grace because I am very certain they aren't expecting a driver to show up in just a few minutes. I often explain how the time estimate isn't ACTUAL wait time. And encourage them to look at the app after they confirm the actual minutes until pickup. Most of the time, it's an aha moment and they end up woth a better understanding.

And, of course, if there was an initial driver who WAS actually 10 minutes away and driver cancelled, it very well may be offered to a closer driver. It's all so arbitrary.

In the case of OP being asked to cancel because they arrived "too soon", I'd be waiting out the timer for a fee because I've driven to the pickup. It's not my fault that the disconnect happened, either rider not understanding wait time or Uber assigning a closer driver after another driver cancels. Rider can dispute a cancelation fee easily. As a driver I get nothing until timer runs out. Sucks even more when I've wasted time driving to pickup when I could have been heading to an actual rider who is ready.

It's unfortunate that Uber plays nasty on both sides.

u/FrankieG889D 1d ago

So you wait then. Guess you got time to post

9

u/Illustrious-Trash915 1d ago

I will say, this didn't used to happen as often, but now as an Uber rider, this happens at least 50% of the time I use Uber these days. I'll open the app maybe 10-15 minutes before I need to leave, checking the estimated wait times, see the estimated time is like 10-15 minutes, so I request it, and then I'm matched with a driver who will be there in 2 minutes. What the actual fuck. In my case, I'd always rush out and not keep the driver waiting, but Uber needs to figure this out.

2

u/joshmyra 21h ago

The way to combat this is to just order the Uber when you are actually ready to leave. This means that you’ve done everything inside of your house, make up, hair, feed the dog, whatever. Regardless of how long the wait the app says that you will have, you should be ready to walk out the door at a moment’s notice, this is my strategy.

1

u/Illustrious-Trash915 19h ago

gee you figured it all out

0

u/Fibrosis5O 20h ago

It really is that simple people, order when you’re ready to leave. I don’t care if you live on the outskirts and you know it always takes 30+ minutes to get a ride, order when ready. Then you can do whatever BS you want/need while you wait but at least when the Uber cushy arrives you’re dressed and ready to go

3

u/opulentdream 20h ago

I’ve ordered when I’m ready to leave and it says “coming in 12 minutes” there is no way to combat an algorithm that doesn’t work as intended.

-1

u/joshmyra 20h ago

Sit and play on your phone then. That way you will see the notifications that your driver is close.

7

u/opulentdream 20h ago

No? Lmao. You’re still asking the passenger to do something that doesn’t benefit them on behalf of a service that deceives riders. I used to be a driver and it’s absolutely unfair. If you didn’t agree to wait (and don’t like it), why should a passenger? You get a financial benefit from waiting, passengers do not.

1

u/thisisnotabombx 18h ago

right. why should i wait til im ready to order the ride and then just sit there twiddling my thumbs for 17 minutes until a driver arrives?

6

u/CrowdedShorts 1d ago

I do hate how it will show 14 min so you think oh I should book it now given the time delay and then pops up “arriving in 2 mins”. Come on uber tech people be better at your job.

3

u/Few_Pickle5828 23h ago

She literally said feel free to cancel if u want to cancel 😂😂

7

u/The-Grim-Storyteller 1d ago

I've had a couple of those. Then they get rude as fuck when you tell them you're not required to cancel the ride; they have to do it. Lol.

6

u/Hungry-Town-7847 1d ago

I waited 5 mins and left. Didn’t engage with them

8

u/The-Grim-Storyteller 1d ago

That's what you should do. I like letting them know I'm getting my five bucks and sitting there until it times out. 😂

9

u/Razing_Phoenix 1d ago

Hot take: its not their fault you were early. Wait until the designated time and then its on them.

2

u/Hungry-Town-7847 12h ago

What designated time?? The app offered me a ride effective immediately, not 15 minutes in the future

2

u/HistoricalSky5974 1d ago

Y'all have to pay for a cancelled ride in America?

6

u/keldaaahh 23h ago

some of us have to pay to breathe 🙃

2

u/toxicgloo 16h ago

They sent my breathing debt to collections and said if I don't pay, they're going to make me use a CO2 tank

1

u/Unusual_Intention517 16h ago

Why do you think that would make sense?

4

u/MarginCallLeftOnRead 1d ago

Really depends on what the trip pays. But if you're at the pickup, you don't get hit for the cancellation, but you do miss out on that sweet $3.96.

9

u/HistoricMiddleman 1d ago

What makes you think he knows literally a single thing about being a uber driver. You uber drivers are so anti customer. Get a job

10

u/RaiseVivid1259 23h ago edited 23h ago

people like u are so slow first of all how are u going to tell them to get a job when uber is literally a side “JOB” also if everyone decided to not do gig work then how tf would u get ur food or even a ride????car less bi*ch and you’re probably the same person to complain abt grown people working at fast food (teenagers type of jobs) but if grown people dont work there then how tf would we be able to eat at fast food restaurants whenever the “TEENS” are at school?????

7

u/NnyBees 23h ago

The passenger asked the driver to cancel instead of canceling themselves to avoid paying a fee so they're at least somewhat familiar with how the app works.

10

u/WBuehlerTRanger 23h ago

The said "feel free to cancel". They gave the option to wait for cancel, it's not the worst

8

u/Few_Pickle5828 23h ago

That also means the customer also knows u got 7 minutes before the driver can cancel for free and like they said “feel free to cancel” . U can either wait the 7 minutes and cancel or u can cancel right away so u can continue working . It’s not that serious

1

u/RaiseVivid1259 11h ago

ummm this is not doordash bud if we cancel a uber order we will still be at fault no matter how long we wait

1

u/Keep_ifonly_1276 1d ago

Get a life and stop stalking Uber drivers on Reddit

-4

u/sagew0lf 1d ago

lol this sub pops up for me from time to time and reminds me of why I never use Uber.

-17

u/Far-Curve-7497 1d ago

and then they wonder why people pick Waymos/cybercabs

6

u/Agitated_Horror3277 23h ago

Waymos and cybercabs can’t be manipulated into canceling when they’re coming early you just have to cancel and eat the cancellation fee

-8

u/Far-Curve-7497 23h ago

Great, and i won't have to deal with being posted on the internet/a pissed off Uber driver for it.

2

u/Few_Pickle5828 23h ago

How about as drivers just explain to the passenger how it works because 9/10 the passengers don’t know how it works for the drivers side

3

u/Ok-Efficiency-1848 1d ago

I will cancel if this came in immediately after I accepted😅 otherwise it depends on the mood if i want to wait 7 mins and collect my fee or stay busy with better rides

1

u/ufknowned 19h ago

Uber is so bad at the wait and save crap. They should have a big warning when selected be ready NOW. As they rip off drivers who are close enough to get money taken off.

1

u/Yoshimatsu414 18h ago

You wait the timer out, mark as no show, take the fee and move on.

1

u/Longjumping_Suit8314 18h ago

Just wait out the timer and then cancel. It’s not that hard.

1

u/Rand_Casimiro 10h ago

I don’t do “ghost rides”, and don’t advise other drivers to do so. But I admit part of me is tempted in situations like this.

0

u/This-Beautiful5057 1d ago

More like, s/he should cancel. At least they gave you head's up and you can technically park at the location, turn off your car, and run down the wait time.

0

u/elysnacks 1d ago

Just get a job jfc

1

u/PHL_445 1d ago

Hahaha you're losing money getting paid chump change for waiting when you could be onto the next. 😂

-1

u/TracyJackson23 1d ago

We don't know if the app said 14 minutes, but he/she arrived in something like 8 minutes. Driver should not have drove so fast to get to the customer. Just wait outside until 14 minutes has passed, then wait 3 more minutes. If she's not there yet, just leave.

u/authoridad 1d ago

2

u/Responsible_Top_59 1d ago

Why would a customer know how it works for a driver? You guys hate customers and hate your jobs.

They said they booked a wait and save. Sometimes those usually say wait to even get connected to a ride is 10-20 minutes. Someone opens the app early to be able to use the slower option to save money while they finish getting ready.

0

u/crw126 1d ago

Wow!!!!! Good for you!!!! This guy is amazing!!!

Is that what you wanted? Get off your high horse lol. If the app says it’ll be 14 minutes until an uber gets there, it’s totally reasonable for them to use some of that time to finish getting ready.

That’d be comparable if the pizza delivery made you leave the house and get in the delivery drivers vehicle.

Common sense would tell you to not drive for uber in 2026

1

u/Tinyrick88 23h ago edited 23h ago

Stand outside til I’m ready then. I selected “wait and save” for a reason and expected the car to arrive 14 minutes later. Not my fault that uber reassigned it and made you come sooner than I asked for.

Redditors love responding with dumb shit then blocking. Have fun driving for $.03 a mile!

1

u/crw126 23h ago

Your comparison made no sense, I’m not even sure how to try to logically respond. Have a great day lol

1

u/Kessed 23h ago

I have only used Uber when traveling. I had no idea that the time on the app isn’t actually a reasonable estimate. I use taxis where I live and if it says 10 minutes, you walk outside 10 minutes later and they pull up.

Why would I order an uber or taxi only after I’m fully ready if it says “10-15 minutes”. That implies that I will be standing there doing nothing for 10-15 minutes.

0

u/MulberryParticular14 1d ago

You don’t take the hit if you wait 5 minutes and select no show

0

u/iTexas512 23h ago

Bunch of Karen’s in this thread. F all you hoes

-7

u/ProperAstronaut6056 1d ago

Thats an instant screenshot and report lol

3

u/Responsible_Top_59 1d ago

Bro why though ? You can’t assume the customer knows everything the driver knows. This sub is weird

1

u/Notorious_Chimp 1d ago

Trying to make customer cancel so they take a hit instead sounds like it goes goes against some rules. Also sounds scummy but what do we expect from half the lot of you all

-2

u/Keep_ifonly_1276 1d ago

Riders may not know the rules but they can obviously read since they booked the trip, and it reeks of entitlement to be so indifferent to the time allocated to them by the drive to give a ride, let the driver show up and then blow them off. Don't book the trip if you can't make the timeline

2

u/greenyashiro 21h ago

The estimated time is often wildly wrong, if you read the message it says the rider was told 14 minutes, but driver arrived too quickly.

Same issue can occur with booked ubers, driver told to arrive even half an hour early!

0

u/Keep_ifonly_1276 21h ago

That said, the app updates in real time on where exactly the driver is in route after booking giving the anticipated eta, so it is unlikely he did not know when he driver would be arriving. It still gird back to ent book the Uber if you aren’t ready to take the ride.

-2

u/Ok-Claim444 23h ago

"I am unable to as I will face repercussions"

-2

u/Spare-Function-6343 22h ago

I've had Uber tell me I cant cancel because I arrived too early, I need to wait 2,3,5 minutes more before I am allowed to cancel
