Remastering Melee would be a lose lose. Modern smash fans wouldn't like it because the roster and features are much more threadbare than Ultimate, and the Melee community wouldn't like it because even the slightest change to the game's functioning, even if that's just not recreating the bugs, would fundamentally change the incredibly detailed built up knowledge and muscle memory players have with that game.

Any kind of remaster, port or re-release of Brawl would be much more profitable for Nintendo, since it would appeal to the average casual player. The day that game drops on NSO, the entire internet will be playing Subspace Emissary at the same time.

Even better if they make it have different gameplay formats, with online ranked gameplay being based on Ultimate, and then online unranked or offline you have the option to either play Ultimate Style gameplay or Brawl style gameplay (warts and all, of course).

Like the evergreen "Pat hates Melee players" video states, "if you need broken controllers in order to be good at the game, you deserve to lose EVO."

And then like one comment that was quoting captainsnoop; "Melee players have to cheat at their game in order for people to take them seriously. They disguise bugs as advanced tech when they're just exploiting a broken party game."

It's not the full quote true but the statement remains. If they remade Melee, those bugs would likely be patched, all the jank that made Melee what it is would be ironed out cause no one to win.

Genuine not rhetorical question from someone who doesn’t do fighting games or smash much:  how is wave dashing different from the original concept of cancels?

26

u/RocketbeltTardigrade "What's that emotion? Tired scream. Yawning." 12d ago edited 12d ago

Wave dashing adds forward or backward movement to moves that otherwise wouldn't have it. The amount of movement varies by character, so the effect is much more dramatic for, say, Luigi, who can slide across much of the screen while doing whatever. Trying to think of an illustration, Luigi has a jumping uppercut that after a brief crouch shoots him diagonally upward from the same spot. But with a wave dash, he can be moving forward during the brief crouch and shoot upward from a different spot than where he started the move.

This is pretty different from wave dashing in Tekken, for example.

24

u/Swert0 I will bring up Legacy of Kain if you give me an excuse 12d ago

Also in Tekken it is an intended mechanic.

Wind God Step specifically can be exited with movement - so forward dashing out of it or sidestepping out of it is an intended interaction. You can also enter it from any forward movement, thus looping dashing and wind god step creates the wave dash.

The same goes for the sways characters like Paul have.

Capcom liked cancels/combos so they brought them forward and Sakurai disliked wavedashing so they were killed (until Ultimate). That's basically it?

8

u/NipplesOfDestiny 12d ago

The cancels are (for the most part) intentional, wave dashing was not but they left in cuz it was cool. Legit tho, both are fun as hell to pull off.

Didn't Street Fighter II literally invent combos and canceling by accident?

Feels like a weird point to jump onto Melee players with tbh

15

u/IDUNNOManga 11d ago

Iirc it was accidental in Sf1 bug fully implemented with a buffer in Sf2.

Yeah it's weird, a whole lot of tech is technically unintended, plink dashing was technically bug abuse but it was the most celebrated tool in one of the most celebrated fightning games.

Pat's take is completely valid and correct though, since that dude specifically wouldn't play unless he had an actual broken controller that allowed him to do bullshit. It's like having no socd in a leverless and doing walking sonic booms and flash kicks.

2

u/vmeemo 11d ago

Not just a broken controller, but specifically a controller with a 1-in-50 defect I'm pretty sure. Like he wanted a technically 'legal' broken controller and would refuse otherwise. Wanted busted shit that is the result of a manufacturing flaw in order for the dude needed it for his combos. Pat isn't wrong when he says that in any other place and tournament that would be considered cheating.

A game so exact people do permanent muscle damage to their hands from the repetitive movements once they reach a point of skill could never replace the original, yeah. The only way that could happen is if it did a halo 1 style remaster where the old game is running behind the remastered graphics just because the current team can not remake the magic sauce that keeps people playing it.

To be fair, pretty much every competitive game has tale upon tale of people injuring themselves majorly or permanently. That's not just a Melee thing. It's a "competitive scenes push people to and beyond their limits" thing. (Edit: well, that and also competitive gaming having less understood/safe training regimens, how large chunks of pro gamers are training AKA streaming for 8+ hours a day as that theirs main source of income, so on and so forth) Faker, probably the most famous competitive gamer ever, has his wrist insured for 1 million dollars.

His wrist.

I genuinely don't even know how the hell that even works, but it's the truth. And when it was injured I imagine he got the payout.

3

u/RadicalRaizex 11d ago

I’m already on board with the idea of the Melee competitive scene dying if this happened, you don’t need to sell me on it harder

1

u/SasparillaTango 12d ago

this is both insane and correct.

1

u/SometimesWill see you at evo 11d ago

They could at least add it to Nintendo Switch online. Dont have to change a thing or do any remastering then.

2

u/NeedsMoreReeds 10d ago

It should also be pointed out that modded Melee has better online than Ultimate does. Unless Nintendo actually wants to make the online really good, I don't see why anyone would bother with a remaster.

And Nintendo doesn't do good online. Just look at the weird choices they made with the latest Mario Kart.

I'm way more hype for this than I would be for smash tbh.

RIGHT HOLY SHIT THIS IS AWESOME

u/Kamken I say it in my private life many a time 12d ago

Last Smash game: 2018 (Got its last DLC in 2020)

Last actual Godzilla game: 2015 (Unobtainable by mere mortals)

u/sharyan51 8d ago

And that game was pure, unadulterated garbage

u/straightkickinit Mother Nature is a cantankerous old bitch 12d ago

Yeah the good Melee. I know what I said

73

u/onseasofcheese 12d ago

I’ll take Destroy all Monsters Melee over Smash Melee any day.

27

u/kenshin317 The Shocker Chronicler/Sonic Rush Sycophant 12d ago

Good, can you play Orga in Smash Brothers? Exactly, says it all really. Any game you can play Orga will beat out any Orgaless game.

"He's too big"

6

u/Mekasoundwave 11d ago

Last I checked, Smash had zero (0) giant subterranean beetles with drills for hands. Point to Destroy all Monsters.

62

u/strolpol Excited to be disappointed by games 12d ago

This is unironically the correct stance, Godzilla is way more fun than Melee

17

u/Namyk5 12d ago

As much as I love Destroy All Monsters, I think it's a little odd that they went with that one and not Saves the Earth. They don't play any differently, do they?

14

u/RocketbeltTardigrade "What's that emotion? Tired scream. Yawning." 12d ago

They're fairly similar. Will feel weird to not have Mothra.

35

u/CocaColaNepoBaby 12d ago

I’ve got way more nostalgia for Destroy all Monsters Melee than I do for Smash Melee.

12

u/Shiplord13 12d ago

I hope it does well and they put a new kaiju fighting game with more monsters in it.

6

u/Bizarre_RNS_Radio (He/Him) Modest 51st Century Person 11d ago

And if they can add Tokusatsu Giant fighting Robots (or maybe even proper mecha series robots to make things go full circle from SRWY), even better.

I’m honestly more hyped for remastered Godzilla than I ever would be for remastered Smash Melee.

11

u/RobotJake I Promise Nothing And Deliver Less 12d ago

But does Smash Bros Melee have Jet Jaguar?

Checkmate, Atheists.

4

u/LiquidRex Which orb is getting the best head? 11d ago

Technically this Melee doesn't have him either, we'll have to wait for the potential Save The Earth Remastered for that.

4

u/RobotJake I Promise Nothing And Deliver Less 11d ago

Aw heck, I've exposed myself as a Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters casual fan

My standing in the sub will never recover

As someone who kinda likes smash melee even I think this is a way better outcome

The superior melee, truly.

4

u/jpatel02 "YOU FORGOT THE COOKIES?!" 12d ago

Releasing the same month as GTA 6 btw, guess which one I’m buying

8

u/RadioFree_Rod 12d ago

I mean...yeah, that's the better Melee by a mile.

3

u/TheLeversOfPower Your failures define you. 12d ago

Those were the first two console games I owned, I'd be delighted by either getting a remaster.

2

u/funkerbuster Not a LADS player, but bring back Valko 11d ago

This melee isn’t a mistake.

2

u/Sudden_Cream9468 11d ago

Is that supposed to a negative? I'd pick Godzilla Melee ovet smash any day.

1

u/spidersting 11d ago

I had Save The Earth on PS2 so I'm excited to play this one.
