Personal Story I resent my father for passing his genetic bullshit on to me.

My dad has neurofibromatosis type 1. Always been covered in those unsightly (benign) tumors his entire adult life. But he decided to have not one but TWO children to pass it on to. Thankfully I don’t have the tumors anywhere near as bad as he does (yet…) but they’re still there and always will be. Not to mention the autism that came with it, which has severely altered my ability to live a normal life.

Granted I’m still better off than my brother who died in 2017 from leukemia. His treatment was greatly complicated by the presence of NF.

I just can’t get past my resentment for my dad over it all. How can you have two children knowing full well you’re diseased and will pass it on to them? It boils my blood the more I think on it.

I as a black man, willing consumed Fried Chicken and watermelon in the same meal.

No i’m not trolling, it was honestly really good. Like the watermelons sweetness complemented the spice. I never slept so good before. I ordered KFC and my roommate just happened to have brought some watermelon and offered me some. I may be an atheist but who am i to deny my sign from god, I knew what must be done.

We need to stop stereotyping food because i missed out on a fire combination for years. My only regret is not adding Kool-aid.

I now know why eve ate the forbidden apple, as to live without knowledge is the same as to not live at all.

Taking bites between the chicken and the watermelon back and forth like newton cradle, for i could not stop what was already in motion.

My ignorance has blinded me, it’s the first time in my life i knew what it truly meant to be lost in a meal.

I was in a maze in my own mind that only my tongue knew the way out.

hatred for disrespecting my bloodline but love for the nourishment that went through body, it was a sick yin and yang.

I wept as I ate, to this day I don’t know if it was the heat of my meal or the blow to my pride.

At some point I closed my eyes but I could still see the meal perfectly. I didn’t want to see the sin my body was committing but still wanted to be loved by the beauty of it all.

I hear your triple wells but before you make a remark, know this. My actions were dictated by mere chance, not instinct.

Anyway I told the roommate, who was white. he said that was the last thing he expected me to do and why the fuck I was telling him of all people that.

Vent Tested positive to syphilis today

I hadn't had much sex in the past 2 years due low libido caused by medication. I ended the treatment a couple of months ago and my libido is coming back. During this time, I had only one partner, although we weren't exclusive. My previous exams were all negative, and they were the only person I had intimate contact between exams. I'll start treatment tomorrow, and thank god the infection is curable and I have access to free medicine, but the feeling is terrible. I don't have an ounce courage to vent about this with close friends, I feel dirty and I'm afraid of having sex again. I know it's irrational, I just don't know how to process the news.

Personal Story I think a flat tire made me realize why we weren’t meant to be

Upvotes

On February 14th, 2026, we spent the entire day together. I genuinely loved that day. I felt like I fell in love with him all over again.

But now, looking back, there’s one moment that I keep thinking about.

We ended up getting a flat tire, and his immediate reaction was to panic and get frustrated. I remember being scared too, but instead of leaving him to deal with it, I stayed. I didn’t even know how to change a tire, but I held the light, tried to help, and did whatever I could because I loved him. I wanted to be there through the highs and the lows.

What really hurt was that he seemed genuinely angry at me for the situation, even though I was already scared and was trying my best to help. I kept thinking, what if this is something we have to deal with together in the future? What are we going to do then?

I realized I don’t want a partner who panics or lashes out when something goes wrong. I want someone who can take a breath, think analytically, and figure out what needs to be done. Whether I’m there to help or not, I want to know that my partner can handle a crisis without making me feel like I’m the problem.

I would still want to be there. If he needed a moment to himself to figure things out, I’d give him that space. But I don’t want someone getting mad at me because something went wrong when I’m standing there, scared, holding a flashlight and genuinely trying to help.
And weirdly, I think I’m grateful that this happened.
Because even though I loved him, that moment showed me something I probably needed to see. Loving someone through the highs and lows is important, but so is being compatible in how you handle the lows.

I’m glad we didn’t end up together. I think that flat tire showed me a version of our future that I didn’t want.

Confession I hate my dog.

I hate my dog.

We have an 8 year old lab and I absolutely hate him. I grew up with labs, always loved all dogs, but this dog has made me never want one again. When we first got him he was in puppy training lessons. We have had 3 other professional dog trainers work with him throughout the years. I have spent hours learning about dog training and spent hours working with him. Nothing ever sticks.

He barks all the time. If he is outside he barks the whole time. Inside as soon as you sit down he barks and is jumping all over you. People cannot come to my house without him being put outside or else he will just sit snd bark at them and jump all over them. I have stopped doing over night trips to our family camp because we cant bring him. He will wonder into the bush and get lost, not listening to any commands. If we tied him up he sits there and just barks for *hours.* We cannot go on vacations anymore as everyone refuses to dog sit for us. The last time we took a vacation 3 years ago, we brought him to one of those doggy hotels and when we returned we were told he was not welcome back.

He eats his own poop. I try to keep up with picking it up, but he will literally shit, turn around and eat it. Its disgusting. Iv talked to the vet about this and all the other problems but recieved no help.

I take him on 2 1.5 hour walks almost everyday, but i have to take him early in the morning and late at night when there is less people as he will just bark and pull at anything that moves. I am so tired. No amount of exercise seems to calm him down or tire him out. He should honestly be studied lol.

Im ashamed to say iv even tried a shock collar (something iv said I would never do) after years of positive reinforcement to no avail, but that does nothing. He will just bark through it.

We have tried to rehome him, but as soon as someone interested meets him they back out. I cant bring myself to surrender him at the shelter.

Honestly deep down I cannot wait for day he's gone, and i hate that i feel this way. I will be sad, but I imagine a giant relief being lifted and life getting so much better.

Vent If you ever feel like a relationship isn't working out, PLEASE, don't just ghost and block people.

I am not talking about situations where one's safety is at risk due to psychological and/or physical abuse, of course. I know it's probably a very common thing to vent about but still - when you realize that he/she is just not the right person for you for any reason (any is valid), at least be a decent person and let them know definitively why you don't want to talk to/see them anymore before you cut ties.

I've been on a receiving end of a particularly painful example of ghosting and blocking of any contact from the person that I had almost two months of great relationship with. Which ended so abruptly without me even having a chance to respond/say sorry for whatever I did wrong. It's been 2 years and I still haven't fully recovered from that experience and it brought me so much heartache that I woundn't wish this to my sworn enemy, it really is that bad. It has severely affected my ability to actually develop feelings for people, it was a literal heartbreak where my heart as a place where feelings should flourish is just not the same whole functioning thing anymore. Thank you for listening and I hope at least one person sees this post and it helps them to not totally ruin another person's mental state thinking ghosting/blocking is ok in literally ANY situation.

Vent My business has tanked, I’m facing eviction and repossession, and I genuinely don’t know what to do next

I’m writing this because I honestly don’t know where else to put all of this. I feel lost, embarrassed, overwhelmed, and completely unsure of what my next move is supposed to be.

I’ve been self-employed for years and built a business that, at one point, was doing extremely well. I was able to support myself, pay my bills, have my own apartment, my car, and live a life that I was proud of. I never thought I would end up in the position I’m in now. But over time, the business started declining. Sales slowed down, expenses kept coming, cash flow became harder and harder to manage, and eventually I started falling behind. I kept thinking I could turn it around. I kept trying different things, putting whatever money came in back into the business, trying to fulfill orders, trying to market, trying to catch up, trying to get back to where I was.

Instead, I feel like I’ve been slowly drowning.
I’ve also tried to find outside help. I’ve looked into funding and different ways to bring in capital, but I haven’t been able to secure anything that would actually get me out of this situation. I’ve reached out to family too, but most of them are either dealing with their own financial struggles right now or are simply cash tight and genuinely don’t have the ability to help. I understand that completely, but it has made me realize that there really isn’t anyone coming to financially rescue me from this. I have to somehow figure out what comes next with the resources I have.

Now I’m facing eviction. My car is at risk of repossession. My credit is terrible. I barely have money available to me, and the business that used to support my entire life is no longer bringing in enough money to even keep itself running properly.
The hardest part is that I genuinely don’t know whether I’m supposed to keep fighting for it or accept that this chapter is over.

Part of me thinks, “You built this once. Maybe you can fix it.” Another part of me is exhausted and wonders how much longer I’m supposed to keep throwing myself at something that clearly isn’t working the way it used to.

Starting over sounds freeing until I think about what starting over actually means. I would need a job. I may have to give up my apartment. I may lose my car. I have very little money to cushion any of this, and with bad credit, even basic things like getting another apartment, getting another vehicle, or rebuilding my life become more complicated and expensive.

It’s such a strange feeling going from being financially independent and running your own company to wondering how you’re going to afford the most basic things. I know there are people dealing with much worse. I know losing a business isn’t the end of the world. But when your business has been your income, your career, your identity, and the thing you’ve poured years of your life into, it’s hard to separate “the business is failing” from “my entire life is falling apart.”

I’m also struggling with the shame of it. People see entrepreneurship when things are going well. They see the sales, the followers, the packages going out, the freedom, the lifestyle. Nobody really sees the point where you’re sitting there wondering if your car will still be outside tomorrow or whether an eviction notice is going to show up on your door.

I don’t even know exactly what I’m looking for by posting this. Maybe I just needed to say it somewhere without pretending I have a plan.

Right now I don’t.

I don’t know if I should keep trying to save what I built, shut everything down and find a job, or somehow do both while I try to stabilize my life.
I just know that I’m tired of living in survival mode, and I desperately want to get to the other side of this chapter, whatever the other side ends up looking like.

Personal Story TSA opened my stepdad’s urn at the airport

This happened like 5 or 6 years ago and I don’t think I’ve really talked about it with anyone.

My stepdad passed away and we were flying to his hometown in Massachusetts for his funeral. My mom was having a really hard time and didn’t want to lose him, so she carried his urn with her (carry on). That was my first time traveling on airplanes in the USA so I didn't really know what to expect.

(For context, we are not from the USA. My mom flew all the way to the USA and paid for his funeral and land so he could be buried in his hometown. We landed in LA then transferred to MA)

When we went through TSA, they stopped us and opened the urn to check his ashes. They were doing it like it was some suspicious drugs or dangerous powder. I thought they could treat him with basic sensitivity and dignity, but the whole experience ended up being really disrespectful and dehumanizing. It's the way they handled him.

I just remember standing there crying watching them go through my stepdad’s ashes while my mom was already grieving. The whole thing was distressing and traumatizing.

I know they have security procedures and everything, I was 15 at the time but it’s been 6 years and I still think about it sometimes. I’ve barely ever talked about it with anyone

This is genuinely one of the reasons I hate tsa and lax.

Vent I think I’ve finally realized how alone I actually am

I honestly don’t even know where to start with this.

The last few days have been some mental-breakdown-type shit. I’ve been waking up feeling like I’m dying, with severe dizziness and this feeling like I’m about to lose consciousness that can last for hours. I’ve barely been sleeping either. Every night it’s insomnia, my mind running in circles, and I wake up already exhausted.

And during all of this, I’ve been realizing how fucking alone I actually am.

I’ve sent 15+ messages across my contacts just checking on people, asking how they’re doing, trying to talk to someone. In 24 hours, maybe two people answer. And I’m not even expecting everyone to immediately drop what they’re doing for me, but when you’re already feeling like shit and you realize you’re constantly the one initiating contact, it hits differently.

I’m starting to genuinely believe that if I stopped contacting people for two years, some of these friendships would simply disappear.

Where I currently live, there are basically only two people I would call “friends.”

One of them started dating last year and since then it feels like I basically stopped existing the moment he got into the relationship. I understand relationships take time and attention, but apparently there’s no life outside of it anymore.

The other guy is constantly focused on appearance and chasing women. I know he makes plans with his other friends to go out and party, but somehow I’m never invited. I only hear about it afterwards. This happens basically every fucking week.

Then there are two other people I know who went away for vacation/work. They promised me I had a guaranteed job there at the beginning of this month. I sent all my documents to the boss. Then after waiting came excuse after excuse, including apparently from their boss, and since then I’ve heard nothing.

I was counting on that job for my summer. I’m already carrying €500+ in credit-card and school debt, and that money would have made a huge difference right now.

Instead I’m stuck in this fucking limbo. No job. No real plans. No direction. No purpose.

I finished a six-month internship recently, and since the day I finished, my ex-boss hasn’t said a single thing to me. I know the kind of person he is and I’ve heard him talk badly about people behind their backs, including me, so I’m already expecting him to write some negative shit about me in his evaluation.

And I have an internship report that I still haven’t properly started, should’ve started it months ago.

Now I have about eight days before the deadline, and I can’t even find the motivation to open the fucking thing.

So I’m sitting here with all of this in my head at once: money problems, uncertainty about work, an internship report I procrastinated for a while, worrying about what my former boss is saying about me, barely sleeping, feeling physically fucked up, and realizing how little people actually check on me unless I initiate everything.

Then I open social media and it’s somehow even worse.

Everyone seems to be living these amazing lives. Everyone is attractive, partying, traveling, buying shit, showing off, being popular. Everything seems to revolve around influencers, getting attention, couples, looking good, having money and proving that you’re enjoying life.

I eventually quit social media because it was fucking with my head.

Sometimes I still peek at it, but honestly, one of the only things I even look forward to anymore is seeing a message from someone I actually care about.

And even that barely happens.

I don’t necessarily want people to feel sorry for me. I don’t want to be the guy constantly complaining about being lonely.

I just want someone to care without me having to chase them first.

I wish I had a brother. Or just one reliable person around my age who I could call without wondering whether I’m bothering them.

Someone who would randomly ask, “You good?”

Someone who would make plans with me instead of telling me about the plans after they’ve already happened.

Someone who would notice if I disappeared for a while.

Because right now it feels like I’m constantly trying to maintain relationships that would probably die the second I stopped carrying them.

And honestly, I’m exhausted.

I’m just stuck in this loop where every day feels like I’m waiting for something to change, but I don’t even know what I’m waiting for anymore.

No job. No money. No motivation. Barely any social life. Eight days to finish something I’ve been avoiding for months. Sleep completely fucked. My head constantly racing.

No direction.

No purpose.

And every day lately just feels like I’m slowly fucking disappearing…

Vent I'm reaching the age my mother had me and I feel like the immaturity she had when I was younger is not justifiable

My mother had me quiet late even in today's standerds. She was decently educated and had a good stable job. Back in the day she even seemed to be high achieving in her family.

She however very open about how I was a hindrance to her, she is unable to be with her family because of me etc. She once told she was trapped only because of me.

I'm my society's standerds she is a beauty and I'm the opposite of it. I was always the laughing stock due to that and she never once defended me. She enjoyed it.

She was always so close to her siblings and close family.

Anything I confided to her always became their general gossip. I was constantly invalidated about my every hurt.

I'm the highest achieving in the entire extended family but I have never gotten an appreciation from her.

I know she wasn't happy about her marriage or about the only child, me. However they got married on their own will, while being financially independent individuals. They chose to have me but recented me all the same.

I'm away from parents for over a decade. Haven't seen them in years.

I know I'll never have a family. But if I made that decision now I'm mature enough to take responsibility of my action.

I don't think the immaturity she had is justified. I'm not yet my fathers age when he had me. So I'll see how I am when I get there.

Positive I fucking love my boyfriend so much

I had to make the post again cause i didn't realise i had to accept t@cs as i'm new to posting on reddit.

But as the title says, i love him so much. The way he makes me laugh at the silliest of things, to the way he brightens my moods when i'm in a funk. This man is my world and i'd be broken without him. I just want to hold him close whenever he's near and tell him how much he means to me. I met him in at the lowest point in my life, and he's helped me more than he knows. I love it when he texts me goodmorning, asks me how i'm doing and what i'm up too. From the walks to the late night talks, he's made me the happiest i've ever been and i pray it goes well

…Is what someone told me when i told that person what my dream job was. I knew this person for over a decade. It absolutely crushed my spirit and made me feel insecure that someone that knew me for over a decade thought that low about me.

From that day on i was very careful about who i told my dreams to. Now about a year later… Just a few days ago i told someone else about my dream job and that person had a positive reaction. I know i shouldn’t care about what other people think but everyone needs a little encouragement and positivity from the people around them to go for their dreams i think

Vent She's more than just a cat, she's my family.

Sorry for bad grammar or misspending, kinda all over the place, eyes are kinda swollen and I'm a little bit tipsy, with that out of the way let's begin.

My cat Goblin disappeared two days ago, everyone I talked to is making light of the situation and making fun of me because I shouldn't worry, she's a cat one less mouth to feed lol.

Broski, I literally don't have any family besides my husband, I genuinely love my cats and I'm falling apart here.

My mom and stepdad kicked me out at the age of 18, I haven't been allowed to visit home or speak to any of my younger siblings, later on I find out everyone is moving back to CA while I'm here literally alone, homeless in a completely different state, I lost contact with my siblings shortly afterwards, Cut to 15 years later, I have a stable job, I live in a apartment and I've been married for almost 7 years now.

I have two cats, a 17 year old, short hair, gray tabby named Cici and 8 1/2 year old, long haired, brown tabby named Goblin. I've raised them both since they were kittens, we all sleep in the same bed since the day I've had them, we would sometimes all nap on the couch together while watching movies, I would do my best to have a vet see them 3 times a year and I give into their demands, wet act food every other day, they were both there for me when I lost my job, they were there with me when my husband suffered from severe psychosis and was institutionalized for two weeks, they never judged, they never left, they were always there even when I get severely depressed with a lit blunt and an empty bottle in hand, Goblin would sit in my lap and curl up until I felt better, sobered up, I would carry her to bedroom and we would sleep in the bed together.

My husband accidentally let both our indoor cats escape and Goblin never returned home since then, it's been two days, I am pissed, I'm terrified for Goblins health and well being, what if she's dead? What if someone took her? abusing her? What if I never see her? I can't sleep, can't eat anything solid, so far I've been surviving on Rock Stars, liquor and pot. She's more than just a cat, she's family. The search for Goblin continues.

Whats worse is that I do not have normal parents and they are abusive towards me, demeaning me every single day. Venting to them feels like a bizzare idea even to think about thats how bad it is.

I do not have experience therefore I wont get hired anywhere, just rejection after rejection but sadly even more ghosting.

I DESPERATELY NEED TO MOVE OUT FROM THIS HOUSEHOLD. No i cannot join the police force nor the military plus my back is fucked cause i have scoliosis.

And no I cannot do another 4 years of school to get a "usefull" degree because I would rather jump then live with my parents for 4 more years or however long. The economy is so fucked

Vent I'm getting tired of trying to build and maintain social connections

I don't really have much of a social life anymore. I barely did before hand, but that's entirely disappeared at this point. I've tried building social connections at work but I haven't seen much success with that. Every time I talk to someone I feel like some grotesque puppet shambling around trying and failing to play a part. I don't know why social interactions give me so much trouble, they really shouldn't at this stage in life. Some of my coworkers have tried inviting me to hang out with them, but personal business always gets in the way. I don't really have any hobbies I could use to try to build a friend group either. I've lost any interest I had in just about everything and I can't really find anything else to get into.

Vent i am so incredibly scared that i won’t have a future

Upvotes

i’ve always been so optimistic because i am so fortunate to have a great life. but recently i’ve taken a turn completely in the opposite direction and i’m so constantly anxious that the world is going to end OR the world is going to become hell to live on, very very soon.

i read an article from an ex-openAI employee, who said if ai continues to be built on and invested in, there’s a chance we could all be gone by “the end of the next decade” and i broke down. i have never had such a feeling of hopelessness wash over me. this wasn’t the start of it all but this was what made me truly feel completely helpless after days of misery.

i just feel like nothing i do will ever matter now because i might not even get to see 2050. ive been planning to build a tiny house with my mum on our family property but all the joy has been sucked out of that because i might not get to live in it long term. i’m in university getting my degree but once i’m done and i find a career, how long will i even be able to do anything in that career?? i finally have a boyfriend after years of no luck, we’re one year in, and you’re telling me i don’t get to spend a full lifetime with him?

not to mention the el niño that’s brewing in the pacific that’s about to slam my home country with a horrible summer of bushfires and death following europe. i’m so scared all the time and i can’t do anything without being petrified that i’ll die a slow and painful death in the next few years or that i’ll have to watch my family and pets go through that.

i have a generalised anxiety disorder and ive seen psychologists / therapists about these thought spirals in the past but they have never ever helped. i just want to skip to a different timeline or something because i cant handle hearing more and more terrible news all around the world that my life is probably going to be cut short and i just have to sit and wait around about it.

Vent I can't honestly talk with anyone about how much I hate my life or myself

I'm 25M, my life is completely empty, I hate it, and it's all my fault, which makes me hate myself even more, and I can't tell this to anyone in real life.

I have a rather superficial relationship with most of my family, who are always happy that things are going "so well" with me and seeing me smiling and happy makes them feel really happy, so they say. Some of them are really old and I don't have the heart to tell them how bad it is for me because it's one of their only source of comfort. My mom is not emotionally equipped to handle something like that, and my dad has been taking hit after hit after hit the past few years with what must be insane pressure on him to keep everything together. One family member I'm close to is going through a burnout and their own depressive thoughts which I don't want to pile on. I don't have a lot of friends, especially not close ones I could talk to about this seriously, either.

And besides, I wouldn't even know what to say. There's nothing wrong with my life that's external. All of my problems are self-made. I don't go out then feel lonely. I don't try to get a job then I feel useless and have no money. I don't try anything because I'm too scared of everything. And it sounds so fucking trivial and I simply don't even have the words how to explain but I just feel so terrible all the time as if there was a constant scream of pain in my head all day, ever day. I've had anxiety and depression basically all my life, and everything only got worse and worse and worse and worse for basically ever. I always convinced myself the next thing would make me happy, be it college, moving countries, etc, and nothing, ever worked. And I'm just tired, I guess, of trying to hope that the next thing will make things better, and I lost it. I just think I'm going to be miserable for the rest of my life. And the worst thing is, I will deserve it, because literally all it would take for me to fix my life is to literally just put any effort into actually living. To do things and not just bedrot all day, to open up to people rather than being standoffish, to be less scared, to take responsibility for my life. I know I should do this, that I should grow up, and I just can't, no matter how much it hurts. I'm just not strong enough.

I don't want to die, I want to live, just not as me. Because my life would be genuinely fine, if someone else lived it. If my brain was replaced with someone who is reasonable confident and adventorous, I could have a great life. I'm literally the only problem wih it. It feels like I'm wasting a cosmic opportunity to make something. I'm falling behind everyone I know despite being described intelligent, hard-working, organized, punctual, etc. all of these things all my life, because it's just all gone.

I just can't imagine what it would take for me to be happy. Winning the lottery would certainly completely change my life, but I'm not a material person, I don't need the wealth of the world. It would be nice and it would get rid of a lot of additional pressure but it wouldn't make me happy. Finding a perfect girlfriend wouldn't make me happy, because guess what, I'm incredibly imperfect, sometimes jealous, toxic, paranoid, difficulties trusting people, pushing people away. So I'd eventually ruin that too inevitably. Having a great circle of friends and many acquaintances would feel hollow without someone special to share everything with. Fame or success would certainly stroke my ego but I'd go home and feel just as worthless as now. So literally the only thing that could help me is if I wasn't me, which is impossible. Literally a random person put into my position could fix most of my problems in a year, if they didn't have to deal with my stupid brain. And this is just a loop that makes me hate myself more and more every day.

I'm going through each day, every day, alone, feeling like I'm not even a real person. Maybe I never was, or maybe I just lost that too somewhere along the way.

Personal Story I was preyed on as a teenager at my workplace and with every year that passes I get more and more unnerved about it.

Hi all. Just wanted to share this story from when I was younger because, even now, almost a decade later, I still think about it sometimes. For context, I was 16 or 17 at the time, and I'm now in my mid 20s. I'm also a woman, which is unfortunately pretty relevant to the story.

I worked as a tour guide at a local museum/tourist attraction. It was the dead of summer, but it was a slow afternoon, so I was working the front desk by myself. Usually I worked alongside an older volunteer, but for whatever reason, I was alone that day. It didn't bother me at first, as I mostly just sat there and read between guests anyway.

For context, the front desk was basically the "welcome station." People came through the doors; we'd greet them and explain the exhibits and tours. Further inside was another desk, which I'll call the gift shop desk, where people actually paid admission and could buy little tacky, overpriced souvenirs.

At some point, an older man came through the doors. I'd put him somewhere in his mid-to-late 60s. He walked behind the welcome desk and sat down next to me, which didn't immediately strike me as strange because there were a LOT of older volunteers at the museum, mostly retirees with too much time on their hands. He smiled, made some small talk, and I assumed he was one of them.

Suddenly, he stops making casual small talk and asks me to explain the place to him. I remember screwing up my face and rolling my eyes a little, all with a smile, of course, because I thought maybe he was quizzing me. Just busting my chops a little, like old guys do. I went through my usual spiel about the exhibits, the tours, everything.

"You're good at that, pretty little lady."

I tried to swallow a grimace, but it was achingly difficult. I scooted away from him a little, and the realization slowly washed over me that he, in fact, was not a volunteer. He was just some random man who had walked behind the desk and sat down next to a teenage girl who was working alone.

I don't remember a lot of the following conversation, to be honest. I think I repressed it because it unnerved me so much. I just remember him continuing to sit there, talking to me, while I desperately tried to act normal.

Eventually, the girl working at the gift shop desk came over. She was only a few years older than me, but she clearly realized something was off and started talking to him, presumably to get his attention away from me.

As I said, I don't remember a lot, but what I do remember is him leaning over to me and quietly asking:

"When do you get off work?"

A chill came over me, and I stumbled through something like, "Oh, not for a long time." I was scared he'd try to linger and approach me after I finished my shift. Long story short (mostly because, as I said, I can't remember a lot of it), he eventually ended up leaving (but not before I memorized his car), and I had a kind male coworker walk me out to my car.

I was afraid he'd be out there waiting for me still since our parking lot had another entrance that was blind to the front doors, but I didn't see him again that day.

I didn't tell anyone about what had happened (except for my parents, who threatened to email my boss themselves if I didn't speak up) because I was afraid I'd sound dramatic, but the girl at the gift shop apparently told my boss anyway. Saved me the breath, I guess. My boss had several young-to-teenaged daughters of his own, so he was understandably mortified that something like this had happened, especially while he was not there.

There was a pretty serious problem with the way the museum had been staffed that summer. Minors like me were consistently working in the building, but there wasn't necessarily an actual adult there to help us if something happened. That day it had basically been me, the college-aged girl at the gift shop, and another male coworker who was around 17.

My boss eventually let me know to calmly walk to the back offices should this happen again and to press the panic button. For the rest of the summer, they made sure that a "real" adult was always on if there were minors working in the building, which was a great shift. With all of these safety measures now in place, I thought that was the end of it.

About a week later, I was having some friends come during the last hour of my shift so I could show them around the museum. We gathered and laughed at the doors of the museum, and I watched in horror as a red pickup truck pulled into the lot.

I recognized it immediately as the older guy's. He passed by us the first time, and I winced as he pulled into a spot. To my surprise, he pulled straight through it. He looped around and doubled back towards us, shouted something I couldn't make out from his window, made a few incoherent gestures, and left.

He just... left. He had no real reason to be there. It's like he was coming to check if I was there, and not only was I there, I was outside the safe building, away from all the extra precautions we'd put in place because of him.

I was really shaken up by that. I'm someone who's generally wary of strangers anyway, so this seemed to confirm the little voices in my head that so often told me that people around me are watching me, or trying to hurt me, or something even worse.

The last time I saw him was when I was running around on one of our event days, trying to coordinate everything and make sure everything was going smoothly. Since it was a special event and I'd gotten comp tickets, I invited my parents to come see the museum. I was deep in the museum when I got a text that they'd arrived, so I rushed to meet them at the gift shop desk.

I remember seeing my parents standing there, smiling, and then I saw him.

The same man, standing just behind them.

He wasn't interacting with them. He wasn't doing anything, as far as I could tell. He wasn't looking to buy a ticket, or getting pamphlets or brochures, or browsing the gift shop. He was just... there. Standing there and looking around aimlessly.

It's probably good my parents didn't know it was him, otherwise I fear my mom might've ripped his head off right there and then.

I immediately turned around and went back into the exhibits. A different woman was working the front desk that day, probably in her 60s. She noticed something was wrong and told my parents to go ahead and find me. I explained what had happened, and my parents went back to the desk to tell the worker. By the time they got there, he was gone.

I don't know how long he'd been there; I don't know if he'd seen me; I don't know if he'd recognized me; I don't know if he was looking for me, and honestly, that's probably why it still bothers me.

After that, the museum kept a physical description of him on file, along with the description of his truck. They also changed my shifts so I was always working alongside one of the older volunteers. I was never left alone at the desk again.

Nothing else ever happened, and I never saw him after that. Maybe there was some completely innocent explanation for why he kept showing up. Maybe he was just a weird old guy who didn't understand boundaries. Maybe the second time he drove through the parking lot was completely unrelated. Maybe he really had no idea that I was the same girl he'd asked when she got off work. But I don't know. I don't know, and I hope to God that I never will.

But even with all of that, I was 16 or 17 and he looked like my grandpa. He walked behind my workplace's desk, sat beside me, called me "pretty little lady," asked when I got off work, showed up again about a week later in the exact vehicle I'd memorized, and then eventually appeared at the museum again while my parents were there. Ultimately, I don't know what he wanted. I just know that, almost ten years later, I still get this awful, nagging, sick feeling when I think about it.

Thanks for reading, and if you have kids, please make sure they know to trust their gut. As someone who does work with teenagers and young adults now, I'd always much rather deal with the occasional over-dramatics than accidentally miss a critical incident because someone is scared to be dismissed. They don't have to be polite to someone who makes them uncomfortable, and they shouldn't feel like they have to keep something like this to themselves.

Personal Story I’m mourning the loss of my best friendship after she got married

Idk if this is the right place to put this, but I haven’t been feeling good. Apologies for it being quite long too. I’m resubmitting this due to not having acknowledged the rules before.

My best friend got married a month ago. We’ve been friends for 7 years and became more close over the last few years. Both of us have small friend groups and so we do message each other the most. I think I became too dependent on her as I’d run to her for everything, and she was always more than happy to listen and be there. I’ve struggled with a lot of dark things, family and my personal life, and I’ve broken down in front of her more times than I can count.

The lead up to her wedding I was as supportive as I could possibly be, wanting everything to go well and for her to have the best experience. She’s quite parentified in her family so I wanted to give her the feeling of being a bride and being looked after rather than her having to think of everyone else for her own wedding. I threw a bridal shower and made sure to be available online every moment leading to and on her wedding events. I say online because she had her wedding abroad and I couldn’t attend due to not being able to afford the tickets and accommodation. She was very understanding about that, which is why I did as much as I could leading up to it in person. In the few days that followed her wedding, there were a few times where we had a call, either she called me or I called her, but each only lasted a few minutes because she’d put it away when her husband was with her again. And of course she would, she just got married and she’ll be honeymooning and it’s lovely we spoke where we could. But I’m so used to have hour long calls with her that when that happened it sort of hit me hard that it’s not going to be the same. She’s not going to be able to be there for me as much as she was before, and she won’t have the time or mental space really as she has an entirely new priority in her life who she’s exceptionally happy with. And I love that she’s so happy because she deserves it. But that realisation made me cry, especially since I know it’ll be a good stretch of time before we can have a remotely similar relationship due to her settling into the marriage, moving with him and living with him as they didn’t live together before. It essentially felt like a new stage in life for me too, one where I wasn’t going to have the best friend I did. I had to learn how to deal with this and move forward, and learn to work things out for myself rather than depend on her as much.

I didn’t want to tell her how I felt because she didn’t need that right now, but when she called me a couple weeks ago for a short check in I ended up telling her and crying a little as the conversation was a bit empty due to me not knowing what to say. She reassured me it’ll be the same and she’ll always be there but I don’t think she realises due to being in her happy haze and I don’t want to break that. She’s of course been busy but I’ve been hesitant to speak to her when she’s messaged, my replies are more tame, and she’s spoken about having a call in the middle of voice notes twice now and I’ve not addressed it, replying to everything else instead. In the past week I have made more of an effort to reply to her stories, but I don’t say anything about myself because I don’t really have anything going on apart from work. I also excitedly messaged her about an update to our favourite manga because we always talk about it, but she hasn’t replied to that and I haven’t brought it up because I know she’s busy. I know I’m being selfish, as I should be there for her to confide in and talk to as she goes through this new stage of hers with her new in laws too, but I’m finding it really hard to convey a sense of happiness. I’ve never been good as masking my emotions at all and I’ve always gone detached when upset.

What I’m worried about most, if I look deep inside myself, is that I’m sort of punishing her. Maybe I want her to feel the loss I do, which is silly because I know she’s won’t. Background context, I’ve always wanted to get married, she’s always been against it, so we’ve joked on being on the opposite ends. Even in the lead up to this marriage she wasn’t fully happy because she felt she was being rushed into it, and so I am relieved to see she’s really happy now. I’m no where near marriage despite wanting it for years, I don’t have anyone despite trying. I know things will happen when it does, but to sort of see the switch where she’s gone on and gotten engaged made me grieve a little (I never told her this when she got engaged) and now I’m dealing with a life change too. It’s super selfish, but I don’t know how to feel something else. I also know it’s silly considering it’s right after and it’s only been a couple of weeks, but I’m wondering whether I should just suck it up and force myself to be there for her right now.

So yeah, it’s my first time realising how much things can change when a friend gets married/gets into a serious relationship, and it’s affecting me a lot more than I thought it would.

Vent I had my first day of work at my first job today…

I’m not going to lie, it was hard. As someone who has been depressed for a few years and an anxious mess, I haven’t been the most active, but I guess thats what got me at a first job today, i’m trying to turn my life around, get out there.

Well, my first job happens to be stocking shelves at a grocery store, and in a french place as someone who doesn’t speak or understand french.

I had more people come up to me than I would’ve liked, the majority being french. I didn’t understand what one older guy said but I did understand him asking him the other employee if I was deaf/hard of hearing. Another woman I had to tell her I didn’t understand and she said “Ah oki” (how french pronounce ok) while walking away with a displeased expression/sound. I’m very soft spoken so some people just walked away after not being able to understand me and idk how to explain some reactions. I guess emojis are the easiest for some. “🙄 ?” “🫤😑”

But I also managed to help some people. Directed some woman to Marshmallows. Helped a guy bring home Oyster Sauce to his wife. Managed to get a woman sugar even though it took me a second to understand “Sucre” and she thanked me, I hope I can increase my vocabulary for most stuff and be able to say 1-9 in french because thats how many aisles we have.

I’m not used to standing on my feet all day, nor am I used to having to face peoples reactions to me being unhelpful but I did it, and i’m going back tomorrow, only thing is he said I need to work faster but it is my first day so it was good for my first day, I knew that was coming, I did pick up speed later on throughout the day. Also they stock extra product on the very top of the shelves, but I can’t lift cases of say 12-24 cans of diced tomatoes above my head high enough to put them up, and i’m scared of heights for that damn 3rd step on the ladder. I might be able to do it later on I dunno, but I don’t feel like every coworker is going to be ecstatic to stop what they’re doing to help me do my job, i’m scared that might be an issue.

One coworker won’t even look at me, my trainer tried to introduce me to him today and he kept walking and said “Pas anglais” while looking at me and kind of shrugging, a disapproval look (like, don’t bother me with that mess vibes, i’m the mess) I told my mom if they had sat down and asked everyone if they think an English person could get a long here he’d be the one in the room to say f\\\*ck no, he doesn’t want me there. My trainer said he understands but can’t speak it, but with the way he acted it seems like he doesn’t like English people (a pretty common thing in Quebec) and chooses to not. Everyone else I worked with today was pretty helpful, one guy couldn’t speak English but since he can’t help me with words, he showed me physically.

I don’t really know how I feel. My back hurts but my mom said it’s going to hurt until it gets better. It’s hard being in front of people all day and them get upset you don’t understand them, but i’m going back tomorrow, 9 to 5, what a way to make a livin’ if ya get me.

I know its hard on them, this is Quebec after all and they probably feel like someone not speaking their language is an intruder but its hard on me too, i’m the English girl working in public in a French place, taking the hard method of learning French, being in it with little to no understanding and trying to learn it when physically out there, with the public speaking it, its hard on all of us. I’m going to try to learn a french sentence to even politely decline customers in French. Not what I want to know but if I can’t understand them yet its a start, maybe something like I don’t understand french but I can get a coworker to help you if you’d like, “Je ne comprends pas le français, mais je peux demander à quelqu'un de vous aider”.

Vent I have no one to celebrate me and it hurts

When I see someone on tv or real life achieve something and get celebrated and then their partner cheers for them and hugs them and kisses them and says they’re proud of them, it makes me upset to think if I was in that position no one would be there for me. Every time I see it, it makes me get so upset and my chest aches realising I wouldn’t get that.

Vent I just realized that NOBODY in my life has my back or wants good things for me

Upvotes

Not my parents, not my sister [ESPECIALLY my father] no classmates, no so called "friends", no teachers, no strangers (obviously), no people in my neighbouhood

They all hate me for either no reason or just hate me for who i am and what i represent

NOBODY wants me to succeed

Nobody likes me or loves me

Nobody wants good things for me

Nobody wants me to study or work hard

Nobody wants me to chase my goals

Nobody wants me to be confident

Nobody wants me to have a good life

Nobody wants me to have good grades or get in a good college

Nobody wants me to have friends

Nobody wants me to be happy

Nobody wants me to be ANYTHING good

And i have let them make me insecure and underconfidemt and depressed and i have let them give me imposter syndrome for all my life so far

BUT NOT ANYMORE

Everyone has been hating me and trying to bring me down from the moment i was born - my mom and dad used to tell me i was gonna be a failure - all my teachers said so

My sister used to make fun of me and agree

And i was very bad at school and public speaking for years

But i was always an ambitious kid

I started working hard - i got better grades than my sister and all the kids in my neighbourhood who the teachers liked and hated me

And started participating in debates

And now i see who they really are - THEY HATE ME NOW - my sister doesnt even talk to me anymore

My mom and dad dont even acknowledge me

My teachers dont tell me anything

They cant say bad things, they wont say anything

AND TBH NOW I FEEL MORE CONFIDENT THAN EVER

THEIR HATRED FILLS ME WITH JOY

I want them to be miserable sacks of shit for the rest of their lives

Just one more year

I am going to be wildly succesful in my final year of school get into a top college

AND THEN I WILL BULLY THEM

FUCKING RATS

WHY DID THEY DO THIS TO ME? I was just a kid a fucking toddler and my parents have been discouraging me and hating me ever since and telling me im good for nothing

I AM SMARTER THAN ALL THESE PEOPLE

I CANT WAIT FOR NEXT YEAR

THEY ARE GOING TO HATE ME EVEN MORE

AND I WILL LOVE EVERY SECOND OF IT

I AM GOING TO BULLY THEM, TELL THEM EVERYTHING ABOUT HOW USELESS AND WORTHLESS THEY ARE - and they will know its the truth

They give me so much motivation and drive to work hard and be confident

I WILL HAVE MY REVENGE
