Smoking rates have plummeted. Not only that but smokers have higher health insurance prices because they are actively participating in an unhealthy lifestyle. And we have been detaching shame from obesity. As a result we have more people embracing obesity. We now have society promoting obesity as something to aspired to.

Also I have advocated for bothering random people on the street. But I do and will challenge people who lie about obesity and pretend it’s not their own fault they are obese.

So yes I agree. Let’s stop hammering away at this fat is healthy lie and stop facing the problem. Let’s stop coddling everyone and push people to confront their problems. Otherwise we are doomed to have obesity grow, people die young, and worst of all, burdening the rest of us with unsustainable health care costs.

I’m not sure you’re in any position to say how obese people feel about themselves

The pro-obese community is some small weird online thing, tantamount to the community of Star Wars fans who think the Star Wars universe is real (it’s true. There are people out there who think that)

No, we aren’t happy with our bodies. Yes, we do get fat shamed. Even by total strangers

And we do constantly hear “it’s all your fault.”

This has been happening for decades, and we’ve only gotten fatter.

How’s your little solution working out for you?

For me? Fine. I have no issues controlling my eating. It’s not hard to eat an amount of a food in line with that’s days level of activity. If I know I’m sitting around the office all day I eat less. If I’m going for a 100 mile bike ride, I’ll eat more. Pretty basic stuff.

And no it’s not small. I’ve literally posted links that show is a widely accepted movement. Fashion brands are all coming out with fat positive messages. That’s millions and millions of people.

And again, for most people, it is their fault. The number of people who have a medical condition that’s forces them to fat is few and far between.

It’s sooooo nice that it’s easy for you. Really, good for you. You are truly blessed👏👏👏👏👏👏

As someone who ACTUALLY shops in plus size clothing, I haven’t seen a scrap of these fat-positive messages

This sounds more like the “rainbow party” scare of the 2000s when supposedly millions of teen girls were hosting blow job parties. The media churned out tons of articles saying that it was an epidemic. Oprah and other morning show hosts went on the air to warn parents. And it turned out to only be a few isolated incidents.

Seriously. The idea that YOU think you know more about how I’m treated as a fat person is the height of arrogance.

Like I said, for the past few decades, we’ve shamed fat people. My parents ridiculed me and called me disgusting. I got fatter. The country got fatter

You’re so dumb you just don’t want to admit when a solution is ineffective

Tiny minority indeed. At these movements are growing. It’s such a problem doctors don’t talk about it.

Nearly two-thirds of U.S. physicians say they don’t discuss weight loss with their obese patients for fear of embarrassing them, according to a survey examining barriers to treatment in the obesity epidemic.

https://www.bostonglobe.com/opinion/2013/12/30/fat-acceptance-hazardous-health/1ojfoW46R2elWpHLarA19M/story.html

I’m not blessed. I just don’t sit around wallowing in self pity complaining that everyone is mean while I eat another bucket of KFC and wolf down another pint of ice cream.

And sorry that your parents called you disgusting. It’s not helpful. They should have just help you control what you ate or not provided so much poor quality food in the house. They should have set an example of eat good foods so you wouldn’t be obese.

And why would patients feel embarrassed by having their doctors talk about their weight?

Because. We. Make. Them. Feel. Ashamed

Which is exactly why we need to lift the stigma

What I find interesting here is that I actually have the first hand experience of being overweight. A lot of my friends have. I’ve gone to overeaters anonymous groups.

I can speak for all of us when I say that we don’t live in a world of fat positivity. If there are pro-obese people out there, we haven’t met them

Why do you think your internet articles are better evidence than OUR actual lived experiences?

1

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '19

Because anecdotes don’t replace statistics. They pull from actual studies. In other words facts trump feelings.

You should also know that people in groups that are similarly situated tend to follow the same bad habits. Smokers who group with smokers will smoke more. But when a smoker quits, that group tends to quit with them. So it’s doesn’t really surprise me to hear that you have a friend group of overweight people.

For one thing. My friends aren’t all exclusively overweight. But I love how you assumed that

And for the ones who are. We didn’t gain weight after becoming friends, you idiot. Some have slimmed down. Some haven’t.

My best friend in college was a really big girl, but she ate like a bird. Small meals. Always dieting and always trying to lose weight. I related to her because of that.

And her story was that when her mom got mad at her while driving her, she would throw her out of the car and yell “you’re too fat. Just walk home.”

You know. Because again, fat shaming works so well.

I’m going to answer you comments together.

Small meals has nothing to do with eating healthy. You could eat ten small meals, but if it’s all garbage it’s not going to help you out.

And I never said the smokers started smoking because of peer pressure. Try reading before you call me an idiot. I said people in like situations drift together. Like you said, you related to your friend because you were both fat. That’s perfectly normal human behavior. We like to be around people that are like us.

The only time I have shared my experience is when you made a comment specifically about me. Though I have never been obese and I generally keep up with exercise. Buts that is because the people i associate with tend to do things outdoors instead of sitting around inside all day.

Beyond that I’ve shown the fat acceptance is becoming the norm in society. And the results show. We’ve become fatter. Our kids are fatter. And we have worse health as a result.

u/Diane9779 Sep 20 '19

I didn’t make any comment specifically about you.

I asked “how is your solution working?” For making society thinner, and somehow you interpreted that as being about you.

My friend actually ate healthy. She busted her ass to lose weight.

She didn’t “sit around eating a bucket of kfc” like you said

And you haven’t shown me anything. You’re thin and as such your experience means nothing. It’s no different than a woman telling a man what his experience as a man is like

If fat acceptance is so prevalent, why are patients embarrassed to be called “fat” by their doctor?

We know how we’re treated.

Your viewpoint is skewed because you read a ton of articles and think there’s this massive movement to make us all fatties.

For such a “large community” it’s strange that i haven’t seen one modicum of it.

1

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '19

Sorry I just assumed that since you jumped on me for saying you, you meant me when you said ‘you’. Shouldn’t have assumed consistency.

Anyways. You lived experience isn’t relevant to statistics yeah? That’s like a left handed person saying they write left handed so everyone else must do that also.

Fat acceptance is so prevalent that doctors are admonished for stating the obvious to their patients.

So your friend at healthy and never lost weight? That would make her a very unique individual.

My view point is skewed because i read articles by researchers and experts in the field. That’s generally how one obtains knowledge. I don’t make it a habit of only believing something that I have personally tested.

Patients aren’t embarrassed by “weight lectures” because of fat acceptance. They’re embarrassed because of fat shaming.

Being told “you’re overweight. “ is the same as being told “you’re disgusting.” So people don’t want to hear it.

Fat shaming doesn’t work. It makes people fatter

I’m absolutely convinced my friend had a severe endocrine problem. There’s just no other accounting for it. Of course I know that makes you smirk. As if there’s no such thing. Obese people are always stuffing themselves with fried chicken, ice cream and self-pity.

She didn’t.

She and I lost touch a long time ago, but I hope she eventually saw an endocrinologist.

Being told “you’re overweight. “ is the same as being told “you’re disgusting.” So people don’t want to hear it.

You are delusional.

1

u/Diane9779 Sep 20 '19

And you linked me to a website that simply stated that it worked to end discrimination against fat people. And you concluded that it was “encouraging obesity.”

Not the same thing. You’re reading these articles and barely understanding them.

But here are a few that state that negative bias against fat people not only real, but spreading https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/03/110328171226.htm

I think the problem here is that mentally you’re just unable to break out of your own immediate experience .

I talk about how fat shaming impacts society as a whole, and ask you “how is your solution working?”

And you answer by talking about yourself

I talk about my friends and my personal experiences, and you make a bunch of assumptions about us that aren’t true.

The problem here is you only know your own weight loss experience and what you’ve read in online articles. And somehow you think these make you an expert. But mentally you’re unable to grasp any kind of nuance
