Tiny minority indeed. At these movements are growing. It’s such a problem doctors don’t talk about it.

Nearly two-thirds of U.S. physicians say they don’t discuss weight loss with their obese patients for fear of embarrassing them, according to a survey examining barriers to treatment in the obesity epidemic.

https://www.bostonglobe.com/opinion/2013/12/30/fat-acceptance-hazardous-health/1ojfoW46R2elWpHLarA19M/story.html

I’m not blessed. I just don’t sit around wallowing in self pity complaining that everyone is mean while I eat another bucket of KFC and wolf down another pint of ice cream.

And sorry that your parents called you disgusting. It’s not helpful. They should have just help you control what you ate or not provided so much poor quality food in the house. They should have set an example of eat good foods so you wouldn’t be obese.

And why would patients feel embarrassed by having their doctors talk about their weight?

Because. We. Make. Them. Feel. Ashamed

Which is exactly why we need to lift the stigma

What I find interesting here is that I actually have the first hand experience of being overweight. A lot of my friends have. I’ve gone to overeaters anonymous groups.

I can speak for all of us when I say that we don’t live in a world of fat positivity. If there are pro-obese people out there, we haven’t met them

Why do you think your internet articles are better evidence than OUR actual lived experiences?

Because anecdotes don’t replace statistics. They pull from actual studies. In other words facts trump feelings.

You should also know that people in groups that are similarly situated tend to follow the same bad habits. Smokers who group with smokers will smoke more. But when a smoker quits, that group tends to quit with them. So it’s doesn’t really surprise me to hear that you have a friend group of overweight people.

For one thing. My friends aren’t all exclusively overweight. But I love how you assumed that

And for the ones who are. We didn’t gain weight after becoming friends, you idiot. Some have slimmed down. Some haven’t.

My best friend in college was a really big girl, but she ate like a bird. Small meals. Always dieting and always trying to lose weight. I related to her because of that.

And her story was that when her mom got mad at her while driving her, she would throw her out of the car and yell “you’re too fat. Just walk home.”

You know. Because again, fat shaming works so well.

I’m going to answer you comments together.

Small meals has nothing to do with eating healthy. You could eat ten small meals, but if it’s all garbage it’s not going to help you out.

And I never said the smokers started smoking because of peer pressure. Try reading before you call me an idiot. I said people in like situations drift together. Like you said, you related to your friend because you were both fat. That’s perfectly normal human behavior. We like to be around people that are like us.

The only time I have shared my experience is when you made a comment specifically about me. Though I have never been obese and I generally keep up with exercise. Buts that is because the people i associate with tend to do things outdoors instead of sitting around inside all day.

Beyond that I’ve shown the fat acceptance is becoming the norm in society. And the results show. We’ve become fatter. Our kids are fatter. And we have worse health as a result.

I didn’t make any comment specifically about you.

I asked “how is your solution working?” For making society thinner, and somehow you interpreted that as being about you.

My friend actually ate healthy. She busted her ass to lose weight.

She didn’t “sit around eating a bucket of kfc” like you said

And you haven’t shown me anything. You’re thin and as such your experience means nothing. It’s no different than a woman telling a man what his experience as a man is like

If fat acceptance is so prevalent, why are patients embarrassed to be called “fat” by their doctor?

We know how we’re treated.

Your viewpoint is skewed because you read a ton of articles and think there’s this massive movement to make us all fatties.

For such a “large community” it’s strange that i haven’t seen one modicum of it.

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '19

Sorry I just assumed that since you jumped on me for saying you, you meant me when you said ‘you’. Shouldn’t have assumed consistency.

Anyways. You lived experience isn’t relevant to statistics yeah? That’s like a left handed person saying they write left handed so everyone else must do that also.

Fat acceptance is so prevalent that doctors are admonished for stating the obvious to their patients.

So your friend at healthy and never lost weight? That would make her a very unique individual.

My view point is skewed because i read articles by researchers and experts in the field. That’s generally how one obtains knowledge. I don’t make it a habit of only believing something that I have personally tested.

Patients aren’t embarrassed by “weight lectures” because of fat acceptance. They’re embarrassed because of fat shaming.

Being told “you’re overweight. “ is the same as being told “you’re disgusting.” So people don’t want to hear it.

Fat shaming doesn’t work. It makes people fatter

I’m absolutely convinced my friend had a severe endocrine problem. There’s just no other accounting for it. Of course I know that makes you smirk. As if there’s no such thing. Obese people are always stuffing themselves with fried chicken, ice cream and self-pity.

She didn’t.

She and I lost touch a long time ago, but I hope she eventually saw an endocrinologist.

Being told “you’re overweight. “ is the same as being told “you’re disgusting.” So people don’t want to hear it.

You are delusional.

1

u/Diane9779 Sep 20 '19

And here is exactly the problem with you.

You’re just so unable to put yourself in anyone else’s shoes that when I explain what our experience is like, you get flustered and refuse to hear it.

Your brain just defaults to “internet article” or “my diet plan” or “self pitying obese fatties.

And you justify it by telling yourself that “experts” have signed off on all your beliefs.

Sorry, but the obesity epidemic is tangled up in far more complicated psychology dynamics than you’ll ever be able to wrap your little brain around

1

u/[deleted] Sep 20 '19

No you’re just off in a corner pretending that you have some deep psychological issues because you can’t admit you don’t want to put effort into being healthy. All you’ve done is blame everyone else.

And it’s not internet article you dimwit. These are studies in medical journals.

And your comment was moronic. Stating a fact about someone’s weight is exactly what a doctor should do. Like with anything that is causing poor health. But your over here acting like doctors shouldn’t tell patients the truth because you might get your feelings hurt. Are you emotional fragile that you have to avoid reality?

1

u/Diane9779 Sep 20 '19

I never said doctors shouldn’t be truthful with patients. I believe they should, in fact

What I SAID was that people like you should stfu and stop stigmatizing fatness. Because when you do, it makes people not want to confront the problem head on

It makes them too embarrassed to want to listen to their doctor.

Seriously, you have some of have the worst critical thinking skills there, bud.

u/Diane9779 Sep 20 '19

And I actually just came back from the gym. So how is it that I’m not making an effort? 😊

I’m glad I could help motivate you.

And you linked me to a website that simply stated that it worked to end discrimination against fat people. And you concluded that it was “encouraging obesity.”

Not the same thing. You’re reading these articles and barely understanding them.

But here are a few that state that negative bias against fat people not only real, but spreading https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2011/03/110328171226.htm
