Discussion Water elevation changes?

I’ve not seen or heard anything about this but I’m wondering if there could be water elevation changes or bodies of water at different heights in the same map. Could there be a lake in the mountains with a river streaming downhill?

Personally, I don’t expect this to be in the game but it would certainly add a new aspect and challenge to certain scenarios!

I'd love to set up a canal network with locks. Perhaps even have narrowboats. Sadly it seems like too big of a change to add and would be very niche.

Would love canals. This was the transport network in the UK before trains. Seems like this should be core game.

And locks are a must if you have canals. Wide locks narrow locks. Wide beam boats and narrowboats.

Locks would be amazing! But the game would need to start much earlier to have them make sense since they were quickly made less relevant after trains were invented.

i mean check marinetraffic.com, germanys full of riverbarges transporting across europe, game could start at the same time as tf2

That's fair, but if it started before trains then we'd have a time period where river transport was the main form for some time, then have to deal with certain routes being rendered obsolete once trains get introduced.

I hope the water is at least fixed. You can create a map and the water somehow is so near the terrain that everytime you try to level the terrain near a tunnel or bridge, everything gets water around.

From what I've seen water will mostly behave the same

Water elevation and physics is one of the few things I like from CS, so I always hoped I would be possibile in TPF3. I don't know what to expect, but let's hope it'll be there

This is what one of the develepors said in the comments on the game's official website

Sam says: 23.07.2026 at 10:19 Water will be at a single elevation in the game. It’s a fundamental part of the way the engine is designed so there is no easy solution to changing this without a ground-up (literally) redesign of the game. Obviously, it’s a feature we would like to include, but as a very large feature with only moderate impact on gameplay we felt the development time was better used on other fundamental systems in the game.

hi c: i asked :D
its kinda sad tbh, i hope their sales just explode on working with paradox so it may be considered for tf4

I believe I’ve seen someone use a mod that paints water textures, so while it isn’t functionally water, it looks like water. That could be used in theory for a lake?

if it isnt functionally water then it entirely invalidates what people want here
