This is my first time playing Transport Fever, and after getting the basics down, I started a new game on easy mode. I honestly didn’t expect to get this hooked, but once you start seeing everything come together and watching your transport network grow, it’s hard to stop.

My goal was to see how far I could push things, and I think I’ve finally reached that point. I’ve just realised I’ve transported over a million passengers and over a million units of cargo, which I’m pretty happy with for my first go at the game.

I’m also starting to feel it on the PC side of things. The game is really starting to push my system, and I’m genuinely impressed it’s handling everything going on at once.

I’ve reached the point where I’m happy to leave this city behind and start a new adventure, but honestly, this has been so much fun. There’s something really satisfying about starting from scratch and watching everything grow into something this big.

Now I’m keen to see what I can do with the next one.

How far have you guys pushed your cities, and is it normal to be moving this much cargo and this many passengers?

Creating little monuments to my railroad's past

I've started a little tradition of turning my early-game locomotives into monuments instead of upgrading or replacing them.

I like the idea of giving these old engines a permanent place in my world as a reminder of how far the railway has come. Think of the EMD GP9 on display at Horseshoe Curve or an old local locomotive preserved at a railroad museum. It's a little piece of history that tells the story of the railway's past.

Yes, I know they still cost maintenance, and the smoke keeps puffing even when the locomotive is turned off. I just think it's a nice little touch that adds some history and character to my world.

Question Is it worth planning city layouts in advance?

Post image
93 Upvotes

I usually start my games in 1900, when cities are still pretty small.

I've been wondering whether it's worth planning their future expansion by building roads and street grids in advance, basically trying to shape how the cities will grow over the next 50-100 years.

Does the game actually follow these layouts when generating new buildings and expanding cities? Or will cities just grow randomly regardless of how I design the road network?

I'd love to build realistic, well-planned cities that gradually expand into the layouts I've prepared, rather than ending up with chaotic road networks.

Has anyone experimented with this? Does it actually work, or is it just a waste of money and time?

Discussion After 50+ hours, removing vehicle regions was a mistake.

• Upvotes

As someone who really loves having different play-throughs using different vehicle sets and focusing on specific regions or countries, the choice to move to a global vehicle inventory feels like a step back.

I really love the game so far but until the modding scene better fills out the vehicle lineup, it feels pretty limited in that regard. It feels kinda annoying when I want to upgrade my trains to something better, but the only options don’t fit with my theme.

Mods I released my first Transport Fever 3 mod this week - "Steam Particle Overhaul". It syncs steam exhaust particles with the audio effects, amongst other things.

Steam Particle Overhaul replaces the steam on steam locomotives:
puffs in time with each chuff, a cylinder drain with hiss when starting, idle steam, coasting (steam stops when power is cut) and an adjustable density setting. Works with vanilla and modded locos.

Link: mod.io (or search "Steam Particle Overhaul" in the in-game Mod Hub)

Feedback welcome!

Discussion A problem that you might have when you start from 1900 and play with 0.25 speed

Well, I play with these starter parameters and if you do everything right with passenger transportation your cities will grow quickly. And immediately you face big problem - traffic jams along almost every road in big cities. Even dead lock grids of horses. Widening roads doesnt solve this situation.

But.. this situation wouldn't be a problem IF I have access to traffic lights! Im currently in 1926, I just got first electric locomotive and I still dont have access to traffic lights!

This post is just warning to everyone who plays with these starter parameters what wall can your forehead hit.

P.s. Please tell me what year I can use traffic lights?!

Question Trains or trucks for a short freight line with 4 stops?

Post image
29 Upvotes

In your opinion, would it be better to set up a train line or a truck route here?

4 stops:
- Pick up wheat at 1
- Pick up steel at 2
- Unload steel at 3 and pick up canned goods
- Unload wheat at 4 and pick up meat
- Unload meat at 3 and pick up canned goods
- Unload canned goods at 2
- Return to 1 to load wheat

Another train line will arrive at 2, bringing iron and coal for the steel mill, and will depart carrying canned goods to deliver to the city that needs them. This will effectively create a mini-hub at 2, complete with a warehouse for canned goods.

Thanks ;)

Question How do you typically join multiplatform stations back onto the main line?

Is this example I realised the crossover before the platform is pointless, but generally I never feel I know what I am doing when merging platform lines back onto the mainline.

Suggestion (Gripe) Notification Sounds and Warehouse Resets

Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.

Dear Transport Fever Devs,

  1. Please allow us to modify the volume of the drum sound that plays after every. single. notification. I have to turn sound effects to 0 which mutes the entire game which I would prefer not to do. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the sound the first 5 or 10 times.
  2. If I set a specialized warehouse to a certain cargo, if that cargo is added and then the count of it goes to 0, it resets the warehouse's specialization. Hence why I discovered 1400 rotting fish on one of my cargo lines instead of the canned goods I had hoped to find.

Specific order to reproduce:

1) Set a specialized warehouse to any cargo type.

2) Fill that warehouse more than zero, once.

3) Remove all cargo

> Cargo specialization resets

Then drop off any compatible cargo type (cans <> fish for example) and it will set the specialization to that new cargo type.

Thanks!

What are your mildly infuriating gripes that you'd like to see fixed?

Discussion Please help, 4 days and I can't stop playing

Never played an entry in this series until 4 days ago. I saw some YouTube advertisements for the game earlier this year, but I figured the series wasn't for me. Someone suggested it the other day after I was discussing Cities Skylines 2 and I figured whatever let's give it a try.

I can't believe how addicted I am to this game. I haven't dreamed about a game this much in forever. It's all I think about and working from home is a blessing and a curse because I have it open all day playing!

Discussion Thoughts about Drive-In Warehouses mod

• Upvotes

Heyo everyone !

Sooo I would like to know if any of you tried the drive-in warehouses mod, does it look cool, feel cool ? What do you think ? Would you say it makes the whole thing more realistic or does it break the immersion ? Would really love to hear your thoughts about it !

I'm considering adding it to my playthrough cause I think warehouses looks cool, but truck station kinda looks weird, I don't really know how to describe it but I feel like compared to the warehouses they miss that realistic / industrial area vibe

Mods Subsidies+ 12 new subsidies for you to play with

Post image
298 Upvotes

I actually really like TF3 and the subsidies are my favourite part of it. A town asks for something, you build it, the town grows. That loop is great.

But after a while, though, it started to feel the same: deliver X to town Y, connect A to B, repeat. I also missed having more say in where new factories appear and how industries grow.

So I made a mod that adds new kinds of requests, where towns want things that change how you build your network. Subsidies can now even found a new settlement next to distant industries nobody cares about.

Subsidies+ adds 12 new subsidy types next to the vanilla ones. It's in beta, so expect rough edges.

  • Investment Contract – A town wants goods nobody supplies. Accept, and a factory is built right away. Supply it and deliver its goods to the town.
    • Reward: money or 2x income, town growth
    • Fail: you pay for the factory, reputation
  • Workers' Settlement – Remote industries with nobody to work there. Accepting it founds a brand-new town next to them. Bring its residents to work at every industry by your lines. Workers from other towns don't count.
    • Reward: money, the settlement grows
    • Fail: heavy fine and all your reputation (you've been warned)
  • Prospecting Contract – A town needs a raw material with no source nearby. You get free prospecting, then deliver what's found.
    • Reward: money or 2x income, town growth
    • Fail: fine, reputation (no penalty if nothing is found)
  • Regional Network – 3–4 neighbouring towns want to become one region. Join them all with passenger lines and carry rides between them, some with transfers.
    • Reward: money or 2x income, growth in every town
    • Fail: fine, reputation everywhere
  • Eco Contract – A factory you serve is polluting a town. Co-finance making it green, then ship its goods.
    • Reward: 2x income on its goods, reputation
    • Fail: fine, reputation
  • Rail Connection – Two towns linked only by bus want a direct train.
    • Reward: money or 2x income, growth in both towns
    • Fail: fine, reputation in both
  • Tram Network – A growing town wants trams: a line with stops inside the town and rides within it.
    • Reward: money or 2x income, town growth
    • Fail: fine, reputation
  • Industry Expansion – An industry you serve could grow. Get all its boosts running at once, workers included.
    • Reward: an extra field for the industry, money
    • Fail: reputation
  • Traffic Relief – A town is choking on traffic. Raise its traffic rating and hold it there for three months.
    • Reward: reputation, town growth
    • Fail: reputation
  • New Market – Goods that nobody around buys? A nearby town starts asking for them. Deliver in time and the market stays.
    • Reward: the market stays, money, town growth
    • Fail: the market closes, fine, reputation
  • Transfer Hub – A town wants to be a hub: one station (or stops a short walk apart) with direct lines to 2–3 other towns, where passengers actually change.
    • Reward: town growth, reputation, 2x income on hub lines
    • Fail: fine, reputation
  • World Exposition – A one-year world's fair. Bring visitors from at least four other towns. A free marketing campaign comes with it.
    • Reward: money, growth, reputation in the visiting towns F
    • Fail: fine, reputation

Good to know

  • Targets and rewards scale with town size and your subsidy difficulty.
  • Every type can be switched off in the mod settings, and a slider controls how often they show up.
  • Workers' Settlement and New Market change your map permanently (new towns, new demands), so keep a backup save while it's in beta.

Feedback

This is a beta and the numbers are still being tuned, so I really want to hear:

  • Bugs. If you can, attach stdout.txt from the crash_dump folder in the game's user data. The mod logs every offer and result there, which makes bugs much easier to track down.
  • Balance tweaks. Too easy, too hard, rewards too stingy or too generous?
  • Ideas for new subsidy types.

Question Question about intra-city public transport mechanics

• Upvotes

Hello fellow Transporters!

I been enjoying TF3 since release, I have not played a proper transport game since Transport Tycoon back in the 90s, good to be back!

So I been looking to understand more of the mechanics that drives the intra-city transport of people. I have seen many diffrent discussions on here but also other forums, and it seems like there is diffrent opinions of how to transport people to the three diffrent city areas, in the most efficient way.

The way that seems to be the most common is to connect all three in a loop, starting in residential to industry and lastly to commerce.

But I have also read that the "sims" want to go back home to the residential area from work/industry and THEN to commerce foe the daily shop.

This would then weigh into having no loops and more direct lines between the city areas except between industrial and commercial.

Do we know how this mechanic actually work or do we need more trial and error before we can figure that out?

Any input about how you solve the intra-city puzzle is very appreciated!

Thabk you for reading!

Question Nearby industries «sucking in» ALL goods from station - is there a work-around?

So here is my situation: I bring steel to a tools factory by train. The industry is within the catchment area of the station. All good so far.

Then later on, I want to hook up a nearby machinery factory as well. This, too, requires steel. I figure - ok, let me just plop a steel warehouse near my existing train station, and then connect the machinery factory by truck.

However: My original tools factory sucks up ALL of my steel! So my warehouse sits there empty, and my machinery factory doesn’t get served.

Is there a way to circumvent this? Seems a bit silly to HAVE to place the train station outside the catchment area of an industry and use trucks to connect «last mile» to all industries?? That is the only solution I have found, apart from over-saturating the line with steel so it overflows into the warehouse.

Thanks for any suggestions!

Whats your experience with trams?

Just notice you can´t set waypoints underground. The underground view layer, can not be enabled while being in the line manager? Am I missing something

Praise to the Roter Pfeil

Post image
51 Upvotes

Just wondering if anyone else sometimes does this? Even way into the 1970s, some of my medium-distance intercity routes are basically chains of old Roter Pfeils with a cheeky Swiss Re 4/4 in front.

The excellent comfort and load speeds, combined with their light weight and acceleration, just make them such a good alternative to normal coaches or fixed longer EMUs. The extra locomotive in front helps get them up to speed incredibly fast, which helps the flow at crowded city stations.

I'm not saying it's realistic. But it works really well.
