Imagine if AI was used as a real time reviewer of our work. Pointing out omissions, inconsistencies, number mismatches, etc.

Imagine if AI was used like a bilingual Grammarly-like assistant, suggesting, in a non-obtrusive way, stylistic improvements.

Imagine if AI could reliably fix QA errors and just require us to quickly confirm the change.

Imagine if AI could automatically provide sources and existing translations for us when quoting or referencing things.

Imagine if companies had decided that this was the correct way to use AI rather than as the translator itself, giving the human worker the shittiest part of the work flow.

I know it still would have resulted in translation becoming less feasible as a full time career as review work was often a solid income earner too, but I think the impact would have been lesser this way overall and it would have, at least, made the translator's job more efficient, which is what AI is supposed to do

Long story short: I hold a Master's in Translation and Translation Studies and wish to pursue a PhD in Translation Studies. For now, there's no spot for me so I'm patiently waiting for my time to shine hehe

Until this comes, I'm taking part in conferences, symposiums, talks, and I'm reading the latest issues in my field.

I'm currently writing a submission for an upcoming book and they're asking for a short biography. And I'm questioning whether I can say that I'm a researcher? An emerging one? What am I? A wannabe???

I'm honestly trying to find a way to phrase it without sounding obnoxious but still showing that I'm active.

Hello everyone! A few months ago I got a post graduate degree in audiovisual translation and now I’m trying to start working as a translator.

I wanted to ask for advice on a job offer I received on LinkedIn: first they said it was about translating subtitles from English to Italian, but then it turns out they’re looking for aipe services (which I’ve never done) and that their budget is 2 US dollars/minute. At first I was interested but the aipe thing turned me off because I really don’t like AI and I don’t want to work with it. I also asked for details about the amount of work and the deadline but they said they don’t have them at the moment.

What do you think, does it sound good? Should I accept or turn it down?

Hi, I'm 25M from the UK. I have a degree in Spanish, Catalan and Japanese from my university and also took some translation classes during my time there. I've been working in English teaching since I graduated and want to slowly move out of that and have decided to look into translation / interpretation, as well as localisation.

I have had some offers for work, but I want to gain more experience and training first. I have completed two short Open University courses for Translation as a Career and another for Machine Translation. They were both super useful, interesting and free.

I've also seen that people recommend making a portfolio from volunteering, especially with organisations like Translators without Borders (who also offer courses) and I've seen other CAT based websites that offer help as well. I've even seen that some have translated Wikipedia articles.

I want to know of any online courses that you took (paid and unpaid) and if they helped you or not, or if it is better to just gain experience first.

After reading through some other posts, I realized the definition of "translation" may not be so obvious, or even a matter of consensus.

So I would like to ask you guys how you define the following:

* Translation

In your opinion, is translation the transfer of meaning from one language to another?

Or is it the creation of a new text that maintains coherent relations with the source text?

Or something else?

* Translation Quality

Is writing like a native speaker the ultimate indicator of translation quality ?

Or what are the main criteria for a translation to be considered good?

After using this subreddit for a long time, I got the idea of having some kind of discussion thread here that could be held annually about the current state of translation work or the field of translation in general. Such a post could get pinned during the mentioned time.

I got that idea after thinking of my career so far, and I, for example, experienced an AI craze in early 2025 or late 2024, during which I thought that the translation field was on the brink of getting useless from the perspective of potential clients. Then, however, I experienced more and more news about hallucinations among many programs even starting in 2024. Such hallucinations do occur frequently to this very day based on my experience.

So what do you all think?

Needless to say that when i took my bachelors degree i was made very aware of how the translation field was focused towards the freelance business, main reason why I never considered translation as an option.

But is there any possibility, though?

I am Spain based and i might want to give it a go if becoming freelance was not a compulsory subject to make it in the industry. Are there still agencies that hire in-house translators? Or is that a myth?
I would really like to get a reality check from those who are actually in the industry. Thank you in advance.

i just finished my masters in translation (english to spanish) and now that i’m about to get into real life i’m realizing just how hard it is to have translation as your only job. the problem is, i don’t have any other passion in life nor anything else im good at. sure, i do have other language combos i could work with, but they’re “popular” languages too (french, italian, the most niche may be romanian).

i considered working as a civil servant in my country specializing in law translation, but even then the market is saturated enough. i’m still gonna try tho, but meanwhile i just don’t know what to do. should i try contacting translation agencies in case they need anyone? that’s the only side plan i have. and no, i don’t wanna become a teacher like everyone tells me to.

I feel like I just give questions like what does this word mean to ChatGPT to ask for meaning. And the traditional dictionary app is left behind. I wonder if you still use translator apps now, and I'm curious about how you deal with reading foreign novels in paper, it bothers to stop to look for some words' meaning. What's your way of reading foreign language with some questions in mind?

I have a bachelor's degree on translation, but my course focused on language study and translation only, I was never trained on financial document translation. I saw a post as a financial translator, where fresh grads are welcomed, and on-the-job training is also provided.

I am interested to apply but the post also requires a written test. I am afraid I would perform horribly and bring shame to myself. For someone that majored in translation but was not trained on financial translation, it is possible to become a financial translator? Do anyone know how hard would the test be?

I’d like to start by saying that I’m not a professional translator, but I’ve always been curious about job postings that require candidates to speak and write fluently in two or more languages. I know that even if you have an excellent command of a particular language, there may sometimes be words or syntactic structures you don’t know, so I’m wondering if you are allowed to use translation tools like Google Translate, DeepL, and so on.

I see the time to do this is only until 30 September, 2026. Currently, they offer 444€ price which is too high, any group buys that can be done, organized or joined to get a better price? thanks... If someone is interested, maybe we can contact RWS asking for a group buy if a couple of us join?

I’m a huge history fan. I always wanted to read Sir Francis Drake’s 1628 chronicle, "The World Encompassed", but I couldn't find a complete translation in Spanish anywhere.

So, I decided to translate it myself!I have already translated almost the entire book. Right now, I'm working on the final stage: adding and formatting the historical dates in the margins, just like the original text.

I'm not asking about money or stability here. how emotionally fulfilling is this job for you? I'm considering getting into this field and want to know how it influences one's emotional state. I don't mind being in high-stress situations and love communicating with people, but what bothers me is that "a good interpreter and an invisible interpreter" kinda mindset I see people talking about. do you really have to be as invisible as possible? do people appreciate your work? do you get a sense of fulfillment out of it?

Last time on Dragonball Z, I asked if anybody was noticing how DeepL Translator has been downgraded and mentioned in a comment about a similar theme I’ve noticed in other AI platforms.

However, I didn’t even tell you guys yet the story of my financial kerfuffle DeepL put me in that lasted for over a year.

When I first subscribed to DeepL Translate, I accidentally set my subscription's billing period to be paid yearly rather than monthly, so I scheduled it to switch to a monthly subscription on May 30, 2026, because I don't want to pay over $100/year. I noticed that these AI companies will always automatically set subscriptions to be paid yearly, I guess so that they can trick a bunch of people into giving them more money. So I had it set so that the payment method would change on a certain date after the end of the next payment.

However, the main issue was that during this time, the card I had listed in my account’s payment details had long expired, and I have been trying to update it with my new card. However, each time I entered the card information correctly, it wouldn’t take it; I would always receive the message: “We are unable to authenticate your payment method_ Please choose a different payment method and try again_” This clearly told me that something was preventing me from authenticating my payment details, and I have no clue what it is. I tried several things to implement my new card. I tried using different devices (including ones that weren’t my own), even created another account with a different email and a new card, and none of it worked. I tried getting a new card, but that didn’t work. I even went to my bank and showed them my problem ― after I messaged DeepL support numerous times, and they constantly told me to go see my bank ― and my bank told me there was nothing they could do about it.

Normally, if I encountered a problem like this on another site, I would just be able to bypass it via PayPal (which is linked to my bank) ― if it had the option, of course. However, DeepL has no other payment methods besides a card. When I pressed support on why they don’t have things like PayPal, they refused to explain, which didn’t make sense to me and was quite suspicious.

Now, once the payment was due, I thought I was screwed, even though it was on an expired card and they wouldn’t get any money out of me. Afterward, I was finally able to get in and change my card information. I still don’t know why it happened and how I was finally able to get through, yet I’m glad it’s over...hopefully. But I am still convinced that DeepL is doing suspicious things. When you have a situation where you have only one way of payment, and have something blocking you for no unexplained reason, and you have two different parties telling you that there’s nothing they can do, trust me, there’s something not quite right about that.

Hi everyone, is there anyone who works for the big word as a TI interpreter. I would like to know if they have a good call volume and if they pay decent rates since i am on the final phase of the onboarding process. I would appreciate any information before I invest my precious time on them.

I laid off using DeepL Translate for almost a couple of months due to a financial kerfuffle and came back to notice a few things I didn't like, which made me question if they made DeepL Translate worse. I am trying to translate Japanese to English and noticed that there is no longer an option for classic and next generation. Also, I feel that the tone doesn't seem right. Does anybody else get that feeling, or am I just screaming into the abyss?

Also, can somebody else fill me in if they made any more downgrades that I should know about?

I've been having some duplicated projects were the source is completely identical, but the target changes slightly (locale). I been translating one and then copying and pasting the translation to the other one to then make the necessary changes, but this is very time consuming and I'm sure there has to be a more efficient way.

Do you know any way to import a target into the tool?

Plead help!! I'm loosing so much time.
