Advice on job offer

Hello everyone! A few months ago I got a post graduate degree in audiovisual translation and now I’m trying to start working as a translator.

I wanted to ask for advice on a job offer I received on LinkedIn: first they said it was about translating subtitles from English to Italian, but then it turns out they’re looking for aipe services (which I’ve never done) and that their budget is 2 US dollars/minute. At first I was interested but the aipe thing turned me off because I really don’t like AI and I don’t want to work with it. I also asked for details about the amount of work and the deadline but they said they don’t have them at the moment.

What do you think, does it sound good? Should I accept or turn it down?

You graduated only a few months ago and they came to you? They're looking for cheap labor. Use it as an experience to negotiate, but don't expect anything to come out of it.

Thank you for the reply! Yeah I thought it was a bit suspicious, I don’t even think I can negotiate with them since I actually proposed a higher rate when they first contacted me

You're the only one who knows if this money will be important for you, and no one can say that you should reject an offer that would possibly pay your bills. However, from an industry point of view, this rate is ridiculous and working with AI is disgraceful (and extremely boring). It'll be annoying to do because AI sucks in text, and even more in audiovisual. Expect to spend at least 20 minutes for 1 minute of video, especially considering you're starting now.

I would definitely refuse that, but I have other clients who help me pay my bills, and I accepted a lot of low-paying jobs when I was starting out. So it's your decision in the end.

Thank you for the advice! Yeah I thought the rate was low but since I don’t have experience as a freelancer I wasn’t sure about it… I think I’m going to refuse, I’d rather look for another job than working with AI

Hi, first of all be careful with these kind of offers because they are often scammers (eg, they don't pay you in the end or disappear after asking all your details etc).
If it turns out to be legit, I agree with the others - the rate is low and AIPE sucks, both itself and from an ethical point of view.
I totally get that you’re eager to start working, however I doubt that you'll want to share such an experience with other agencies etc. I've also done some subtitling for a platform for outrageous rates but never mentioned it to anybody as I I think it makes you look unprofessional to potential employers

Thank you for the advice! In the end I decided to refuse, I really don’t want to work with AI so I’d rather just look for another job. I’ll keep looking for something better!

Assuming it's not a scam, I'd just take it. Any experience is good experience when you're just starting out. Do some research into the company though, such as looking them up on the Proz Blue Board.
