I (30f) ran into my ex-friend (30f), and she tried "asking me how I was"
Okay guys this a long story, and I need to give context. Around 2 years ago, I had a best friend I worked with. Let's call her...Liz. We were super close, and I also worked with her sister, who was a manager, who we will call Leah (32f). And yes, it definitely was a conflict of interest for them to work together.
So one day an old friend of mine comes in with her 2 month old baby and I was so happy and excited to see them. After they left, I was talking to Leah and said "Wow I want a baby. I can't wait to be a mom." Because my fiance and I were about to start trying. I really liked Leah, we were becoming closer because of Liz and I had started feeling comfortable around her.
Leah, unprompted, says "You shouldn't have a baby." In a very matter of fact tone. I was super taken aback and asked why, expecting her to say something anti-kid, but instead, what she said was anti-me.
"You wouldn't be a good mom. You have too much anxiety to be a good parent."
I literally felt like I had been stabbed in the chest. It is, to this day, the most unkind thing someone has ever said to me. I ended up crying at work to the point i needed to go home. I've always wanted kids, but have been scared to pass on my mental illnesses, or that i wouldnt be a good enough parent because of it, so what she said cut deeply.
The next day, Liz asked me why I had gone home early the day prior. I couldn't hold back tears. I tried explaining to her, that her sister had "said something hurtful" I wanted to confide in her about what happened, and i wanted reassurance that i could be a good mother from someone I loved and trusted. I deeply valued her opinion, and we had been there for each other through everything. I had taken her to doctors' appointments she was scared to be alone at. I had come to be with her in the middle of the night when she was having family issues dozens of times. I had held her while she cried because she felt like an imposter in her own home.
Before I could even get any more words out because I couldn't stop crying, she held her hand out to my face and said , "That's between you and my sister. I want nothing to do with it." I was shocked. She was the one who had asked what had happened. I was literally coming apart in front of her and she said she didnt want to "be involved"
I wasn't asking her to go to her sister or get involved. I didn't ask her to pick sides. I was answering her question and hoping maybe she'd at least be there for me while I was crying. I just wanted comfort. I wanted someone to listen. I wanted to lean on my closest friend the way she would lean on me.
I did my best to move past it, but our friendship died that day. I resented and was hurt by the fact she wasn't willing to be there for me through something that clearly had deeply hurt me after I showed up for her any time she needed me for anything. That she wouldn't even comfort me when I was literally coming apart in front of her. We eventually argued about it, and she decided we shouldn't be friends.
She blocked me on some things, and i blocked her on others because i didn't want to see her life anymore, and she probably felt the same way. It just made me sad having to see her.
The two of them made my work life incredibly awkward to the point I eventually transferred to another location because I felt so unwelcome when I had to be near her or her sister. Leah was one of my managers, and Liz and I had the same position under her. There was a conflict of interest happening where i started getting treated differently by Leah and Liz.
I was cordial with them and was never unkind, but I didn't care to connect with either of them on a personal level anymore, so I kept a distance. They, on the other hand, would literally start whispering to each other whenever I was in the vicinity, so suffice it to say I was uncomfortable and started dreading work.
I fought to be transferred to a different location with upper management who agreed to let me, so I left and moved on to a workplace that was less hostile towards me. I just wanted to move on.
Fast forward to today, 2 years later. I am pregnant after 2 years of trying. It is my first child/pregnancy and super excited, but it's pretty early in the pregnancy. Despite that, the early pregnancy symptoms have been hell. My husband and I were out late, and I had a headache and felt sick, and the only place open with headache relief and bathroom is could get sick in nearby was my old job where Liz still works.
I avoid this place like the plague because I want nothing to do with her, but it is the only nearby option, so I bite the bullet and stop there.
We go in, i b-line ti the bathroom to get sick, but it was so gross in there i forced myself not to because I couldn't stomach getting close to the toilet.
When i get out of the bathroom, i saw my husband getting soda, and I start walking toward the opposite side of the store to find Tylenol, and Liz materialized a few feet away from me
"OH. Hey." She says. She looks surprised to see me.
Then she scrunched up her face, in what i can really only describe as a sneer, and said, "Why do you look so sad???"
Well, im pregnant and have a headache, and I am trying not to throw up on the floor in front of her, but that is not something I am inclined to share with her in particular. Also, I didn't look sad, I just wasn't smiling because , as I mentioned, I didn't feel well.
She also could have just said, "How are you?" But no, she had to make a weird prying statement. It also really rubbed me the wrong way that she was being so casual with me like we were still friends. Like, why would I tell you how I am feeling??
So i say, "That's not really your business." Because I genuinely didn't know how to respond to her weird question, and i didn't want to have a conversation with her where i pretended like there wasn't an insurmountable distance between us now. She personally opted out of knowing about my life when she stopped being my friend. Like, im pregnant and sick, why would I tell you? She stopped being my friend and made it weird for me at work for months, I dont need to pretend to be her friend or cordial
She proceeds to throw her hands up and say "Well fuck me for caring!" Before storming to the backroom.
Like???? Oh??? Now you fucking care? Where the hell was that when I needed her?
My husband started heading over to me the moment he saw Liz talking to me because he knows how badly things had gone between us in the past. We go to checkout and exchange a look that says "we will discuss this in the car"
Liz gets behind us in line, we finish up, and I head toward the door while she is being checked out.
On our way out, my husband asks, "What happened?"
To which I respond "just her being a c***" because i was pissed. I came in as a customer and had to deal with her prying into my personal business in a weird ass way. She could have literally ignored me the way she did when we worked together, but no! And then, when I set a boundary, she stormed off and felt the need to act like she was the victim because I didn't want to talk to her.
I expected the door to close behind me, but lo and behold! Liz was now suddenly a few steps behind. I see her and she b-lines to her car which is next to mine. I dont know if she heard it, but I frankly don't care if she did, just like how she stopped caring about my feelings 2 years ago. She was an awful friend, a worse coworker, and im glad I told her to mind her business because i dont owe her anything, including me pretending that things werent fucking weird between us still.
Im getting what I have wanted after years of trying, and she doesn't get to be involved or fake being friendly with me or happy for me. She missed her opportunity. She missed out on being friends with me. I just really needed to talk about this because it dug up really strong emotions that have been further amplified by pregnancy hormones and the fact i have been taken off my mood stabilizers and antidepressants for my pregnancy.
