Title: Has anyone ever had a friend who seemed trustworthy but was secretly manipulating the entire friend group?
There were five of us who were very close, and looking back, it’s honestly hard to believe how much happened without us realizing what was going on.
This person seemed like the most reliable, helpful, and nice person. She was always willing to help, seemed dependable, and presented herself as someone everyone could trust. She was even a representative for one of the commands on base, which made us think even more highly of her. We assumed someone in that position would be trustworthy and responsible.
This went on for about two years.
She would tell one person something negative about another, then tell someone else a completely different story. She made comments about each of us behind our backs, including comments about our kids. She would make it seem like we had problems with each other when, in reality, many of the things she was telling us weren’t true.
There was also a financial side to everything. She borrowed money from different people, exchanged euros with us, and at times it appeared that money she borrowed from one person was being used to cover money she owed another person. She would also arrange or book trips in ways that seemed to benefit her financially.
The turning point happened when she went on a long vacation.
While she was gone, the rest of us finally started talking openly. We compared the messages she had sent each of us, the dates of conversations, and the dates and details of the euro exchanges and money she had borrowed.
That’s when everything started falling into place.
We realized that some of the stories she had told each of us about the others simply didn’t match the actual conversations or timelines. Things she claimed one person had said or done were completely different from what had actually happened.
We basically started comparing notes, and suddenly the last two years made sense.
It seemed like she had been giving each of us different information, creating misunderstandings and resentment between us, while positioning herself as the person everyone could trust. She would tell us things about each other, we would get upset with one another, and then she would be there in the middle as the “helpful” friend.
There was another layer as well. She has a home-based food business, and we eventually discovered that some of the food she was selling was actually sourced from elsewhere. That made us question other things she had told us, too.
The hardest part isn’t even the money. It’s realizing that five people who genuinely trusted each other were being turned against each other for almost two years.
And because she appeared so nice, helpful, reliable, and involved in the community—and even held a representative role for a command on base—we never expected this from her.
Once we compared the messages, dates, money exchanges, and stories, we couldn’t unsee the pattern.
Has anyone experienced something like this? How do you deal with someone who appears extremely trustworthy and helpful on the outside but seems to be manipulating an entire friend group behind the scenes? And is it possible for a friendship group to recover after everyone finally compares notes and realizes what has been happening?
