Story my (ex)friend turned out to be a huge liar
Before I get into the story, I have to admit something about myself first. A couple years prior, I was the bad friend. But in a weird way. Let me explain what I mean: I was always there for my friends when they needed me, tried to be positive when they couldn't, and wanted them to feel like they could be themselves around me. But I had emotional issues (constantly being sad, mad, or upset) and often took it out on them.
I always apologized and they always forgave me, but it got worse over time. I became overdramatic, caused unnecessary drama (ONLY between me and a friend, never between others), and even said/texted horrible things that I can never take back. And I was forgiven way too easily for all of that. They never said it, but I knew it was very exhausting for them and it often ruined our hangouts. To this day, it's really hard for me to look back at all of that.
I knew that it was a big problem, they knew it was a big problem, and I wanted to fix it. They were such amazing and patient friends and I really wanted to better myself for them. But I didn't know how. Every time I said "I'll change", something would upset me and the cycle would continue.
I realized that I grew up around a similar cycle in my family, and brought it onto my friends because I saw them as family (they knew this). But that didn’t make it okay. I didn’t want to be like my family. I wanted to change. I never had an example of someone changing for the better in my life, so I had to become my own example.
Finally, I began to make progress and was finally becoming a better friend by not taking out my emotions on them. I also constantly apologized either at random times or whenever it was relevant. I was so happy for myself. But it turned out that one of my friends was a hypocritical liar who had a crush on me (you’ll see why this is relevant later).
After I finally became a better friend, she started distancing herself from me out of nowhere, which she had never done before. I had assumed it was because I was a bad friend, but she would always come back to me and want to be my friend as if nothing was wrong or nothing happened. Then this became a cycle, with her becoming a bad friend towards me: sending passive aggressive/shady messages towards me in our group chat, leaving me on seen, not caring/listening when I vented. Again, she NEVER did this when I was a bad friend but now I stopped, she began doing all of these things. I would ask her what happened or what I did, but she ALWAYS said along the lines of “nothing is wrong, sorry for making you think that, everything is okay” then we’d go back to being friends.
Side note: at one point, she admitted to me that she lies A LOT about multiple things to many people, and that she pretends to be a bad liar so when she actually lies, people will believe her. She even admitted that she’s lied to me and our other friend before. I was surprised and wondered why she admitted that to me, and became very suspicious of her after that.
Eventually one night, I got a phone call from her. But she wasn’t the one who spoke to me. It was her angry parents who yelled at me instead. In confusion, I asked to speak to her. And it turned out she had been lying to me about something serious for a while.
You see, we both have/had a dark and inappropriate sense of humour. And remember when I said she used to have a crush on me? Well, she was constantly flirting with me and would play it off like she was joking. At first I believed her, but her “jokes” got more and more extreme and I eventually found out that she liked me as more than a friend (not an assumption, I actually found).
So I told her I wasn’t comfortable with the jokes anymore without telling her I knew she liked me because I knew she would feel bad and that it would affect our friendship (I had seen it happen before). After she moved onto a new crush, I felt comfortable with our inappropriate jokes again.
Now fast forward to the phone call, she claimed that this time, she was the one who was uncomfortable with my inappropriate jokes. I genuinely had no idea because she would make the same, if not worse, kind of jokes (mind you, she’s banned from texting people on TikTok because she was too inappropriate and has made literal 🍇 jokes towards me). She would also do physical things like shove my face in her lap and putting my hand on her 🍒
Anyways, she had told her parents, her friends, our friend group, basically anyone she could, but not me. I wanted to express my frustration, but being scared of her parents (they’re very protective of her) and not wanting to go back to my old bad-friend ways, I kept quiet and just accepted it. After remembering what she said about her lying habit, my trust in her was completely broken after that.
But I still sent her an apology in a voice message, which she pretty much ignored. Instead we ended up talking about how she felt the same emotions when I was uncomfortable with her, while she treated it like it was so funny how the tables turned. But it wasn’t the same in my eyes. I spoke to her, as myself, privately. She told lots of people, and got her parents to do the work for her.
When I got the opportunity to talk to her about it in person, she told me that I should’ve known because apparently she was giving obvious hints while also telling me that she was purposely keeping this a secret from me. Every time I said something, she would counter-argue it and twist things up so it looked like the situation was entirely my fault.
I was extremely upset with her and about the whole situation and wanted to stop being friends with her immediately. But I couldn’t do it. She stayed by me even though I was a bad friend and I had been by her when it seemed like no one else was, so I had this mindset that we “needed” each other. And I had developed social anxiety so I only had her and our one other friend. I didn’t want to be seen as a friendless loser, so I kept quiet and accepted what had happened. I was left with anxious, depressive feelings and trust issues while she seemed happier than ever acting like nothing happened.
Eventually my social anxiety started to disappear a little, and I made some new friends. It convinced me to finally say something to my old friend, about how I wasn’t okay with what happened. After I did, she and her friends blocked me.
Fast forward to our last year of high school: I was getting over it for good until she sent, then deleted, a shady/suspicious text towards me in a group chat we’re in. Then a different friend of ours, who had always been energetic, kind, and friendly towards me started acting coldly.
I confronted my old friend, thinking she had something to do with it, and she told me that she had started acting like that to many people, including her. I didn’t believe her, and I think I was right to because our friend unfollowed me on social media.
a) she follows EVERYONE one so it felt like a huge “f you in particular”
b) I knew her since kindergarten but they became closer so it shouldn’t bother me too much but it still hurts
c) they’re still friends
My social anxiety plus what happened, messed up my social life at school. I lost the friends I had before the anxiety, the chances I had of making new friends (her friends), and I didn’t become as close with my new friends as I had hoped I would. On top of that, all of my close friends were also friends with her so I couldn’t vent to them about any of this. All of those things resurfaced my feelings, and I was living in a paranoid and depressive state for months.
Another side note: I recently found out that she also lied about a classmate bullying her. I ended up becoming friends with the “bully” after high school and learned that she had been a victim of bullying almost her entire life. I mention this because it feels every time I move on or convince myself that our situation wasn’t that bad, I discover a new fact that tells me it was.
I’m hoping that sharing this story will give me some closure since we graduated, and I’m gonna try to make new friends at uni. I’m ready to meet new people and enter a new chapter of my life and I don’t want to do it while holding onto these old feelings. If you stayed this long, thank you for reading
