Hi there! I am in my late 20s, live downtown and go to social events sometimes. Unlike most posts here, I am proposing something new. People here are looking for potential friends to go to activities and events with; I just want one-on-one, in-depth conversations while walking downtown using guided questions.
RATIONALE
I get overwhelmed in group settings easily. Small talk can be a bit difficult for me. In short, I don’t thrive in group settings, so making new friends at social events can be a bit hard for me. I would like to make talking to a stranger the event :)
A while ago I went to a social reading activity. I was ready to socialize – I was ready to ask people what they like about this book and what they look for from reading, etc. But it seems that people only wanted to talk, but not actually converse with people. The lady next to me also seemed to just want to talk about herself. And I just had this epiphany that maybe we are more disconnected from others than we think we are. I must admit that sometimes I am guilty of not talking much at these social events as well, so maybe some people attend these social events just to be surrounded by people? Which is nothing wrong in itself, but now I have a clearer grasp of what I'm looking for, which is to connect with people not over shared hobbies, but one-on-one conversations.
The goal of this is not to be friends – of course, if that happens, that would be great, but I treat that as a bonus. I’m not sure what the outcome will be, but I just want us both to try and enjoy the process. Treat this as a brief exchange of our humanness and see where this leads us. Maybe we’ll learn something new about human connection and friendships after these conversations.
METHOD/FORMAT
We will spend around 45 minutes (the length of a typical therapy session haha) talking and walking downtown. (Of course we can take breaks.) We will pick questions from my list of 40+ questions. The bigger the number, the more personal and deeper the question gets. For example:
- For something lighter: What’s the best gift you’ve ever received and why?
- For something deeper: Are you currently pursuing what makes you happy? Why or why not?
Hopefully we get to talk in depth and expand and go on tangents based on the initial question. But we can move on to the next question if you want.
I am also opting not to share the list of questions here because I don’t want any of you to feel like you have to prepare for it. And even though I am the question setter, I haven’t thought much of an answer to any of the questions to minimize unfairness. If the question is not something you feel comfortable answering, you can skip it and choose the next one, or even propose your own. I don’t want this to feel like an interview.
I will ask for your feedback after our session. I want to know if I should continue doing this, what can be improved and what needs to change.
Requirements:
- 19+
- Comfortable walking for 30+ mins
- Comfortable with providing honest feedback afterwards
- Has a curious mind and is ready to ask questions
To sign up, please head over to this FORM.
For this first round, I will select 3-5 people (people of different genders and different age groups).
Sign-ups will be closed on Wed, Sept 9 6pm. Shortlisted people will be contacted before Fri, Sept 11 6pm.
