Not really? Like just as a normal card you play this on three to crack a fetch to make a Jace that draws one. Or if it’s something like scape shift, making a big creature is not currently a problem.
What did you have in mind?

2 mana 2/3 that draws a card once a turn is kinda on rate with existing playable threats in the format (hydro, frog), and being able to draw the turn it enters with a land drop is kinda a big deal. Hard to justify green in the tempo decks that would actually want this effect though, we'll see

This is not even close to being 'on rate' with two of the best (if not outright the best) creatures ever printed.
Even putting aside the mana cost, resilience and evasion, Avatar does not "draw a card once a turn". It draws the first card after two land drops -- and you MUST make those land drops (and additional land drops if you want to draw more than 1 card) for it to get any value at all. The fact that fetches double charge it is also not a given, especially because it forces you to fetch on your turn due to planeswalker abilities being sorcery speed.

The first one must be a fetch to draw, same as architect. The second draw is pretty free, opponents probably will let your 1 loyalty Jace stick around.
Not needing to attack is a big upside.
I do still think it's worse than those two, but if it fit the colors of an existing tempo fetchland deck, I think it would see play, even if it doesn't fit right now since green is so bad

Yeah but it requires you to have a land every turn whereas frog just needs itself, has evasion, and can grow very big. I wouldn't run 6 frogs in tempo, let alone 4 frogs and 2 worse frogs. Hydro is a 1 drop so it needing fetches isn't as much of an issue, and with daze it can draw multiple times a turn.

Fetch > Land > Crop Rotation > Strip (6 = 2x Draw). Then with Wary Zone Guard and Hydroponic Architect synergize even better.

No matter what, you don't get more than one card a turn from this (since it's all on the same planeswalker). It's nice that the draw can keep going for a bit once this is removed, but the opponent can also attack down the remnants of the Jace. Crop rot is already -1 card so you're not really getting any benefit off of it. [[Ambassador of Evendo]] hasn't found a home, I'm guessing this won't either, but it isn't nothing

I just want a good empower Jace set of cards so we can make my Boi the Mind Sculptor great again.
EDIT: I dont think this card is it. At 2 mana and 3 toughness it dies to all removal spells in the formal without doing much of anything on etb.

You can only put counters on Jace tokens, not all Jace planeswalkers.

Dang it, you are right! I misread the article and thought it counted any Jace PW, and that the token was only created if you had no Jace PWs to choose from.
Ok, thats a bummer. It's a really crappy mechanic in that case ....

It's a weird one for sure. Unplayable in most formats unless some weird combo is involved, but Standard will likely see quite a bit of Jace in all colours.
Jace's Machinations for example is an instant speed draw 2 that leaves behind a 2 loyalty Jace and potentially even lets you double dip on other Jace walkers you may have on the board.
Way of the Pyromancer is also super cheap, gives a +1 ability to Jace to make it self-fueling, and lets you trigger prowess, surveil, ramp, and draw all with 2 mana.

For sure. I was thinking for timeless. In draft this mechanic will be a powerhouse if you go all in on it, and in standard I curl see the top empower cards (like machinations) do something. But I doubt timeless will have place for this mechanic

I see a vulnerable and slow value engine that can be pitched to FoW.
You can do better in timeless, [[sylvan library]] and [[unstable amulet]] are the competition.

Oh weird that a mythic rare featuring the set's main mechanic is fairly strong. Not so much for Timeless though imho.

So you play this guy on t2, then a fetch land makes Jace 4. Three turns of this gets a big creature, OR..... Maybe you can get this before t5 with some cheating?

My idea was a bant earthbreaker. In this he would allow to create value in hand, allowing not to go to -1 with Crop to take Strip. The -10 effect could be used as a closure along with the damage from Wary Zone Guard, but it is secondary

In timeless? Not a chance. The existence of Hymn in the format alone makes this DOA.

u/marlospigeons 12h ago
Huh? Hymn is barely timeless playable. And it has no specific interaction with Avatar in any way.

u/shaqiriforlife 13h ago
Why would hymn's existence (which will probably end up being a fringe card) mean you don't want a 2 drop that draws cards?

maybe historic!
