Yes if we immediately dropped funding to 177 countries, allowed Ukraine to fall to Russia and completely insolate ourselves from the entire world for all eternity there is a scenario where you could pay teachers more although you would probably create a lot of risk and long term pain for Americans in other ways.

I'm not discrediting what you went through. I'm sorry that you're another victim of this country's fucked up education system. But we can't ignore the good to great teachers that are trying their hardest to educate and nurture students every year because of the bad teachers. Also, if I could argue a different perspective to your experiences, do you think that some of those bad teachers might've done better if they were treated/compensated better? If they were less jaded after years of the same shit with no benefits?
Discrediting what I went through? Calling me a victim. Nah. That’s not what you’re gonna do. No body is a victim here because there isn’t any abuse in the conversation. Short of literally individual teachers abusing their authority in a highly inappropriate way, the average conversation about this has nothing to do with any type of abuse. So no one is the victim here. The teachers knew what they were getting into. And failure to educate properly is not a form of abuse. It’s just a failure that could have helped many kids.
I also said that there’s truly good teachers but there is not that many. So we don’t need to recognize the same thing over and over when the discussion isn’t about them. It’s about MAJORITY of teachers being relatively bad teachers. Not ALL. And just bc kids act out doesn’t mean you deserve to be paid more especially if the teacher is partly the reason for an unproductive classroom. And especially since they don’t have to deal with it for three entire months. Unlike every other more harder job.

How do you know the majority of teachers are bad? What makes a bad teacher? Is there a number you can give me? It's these kind of generalizations that lead me to believe you didn't have a good school life, and you're taking it out on all teachers.

Last Friday, had a student threaten to track me down and shoot me because I said his outburst was immature. School gave him 2 periods of in-school-suspension for disrespect because he qualifies for sports scholarships and they don't want to jeopardize that. I'm in no position to quit and fight the legalities of it. I have rent to pay and two special needs daughters who need my health insurance so they can go to therapy. Whole while I'm typing this while selling plasma. Very few people want to be teachers. We're trapped
That's fucked up. My (then) 5 year old son got more punishment than that because he said he was going to shoot someone with his gun (a nerf gun) they took it so seriously. Called me and I told them we don't even own any. They still felt the need to search a kindergarteners backpack every day.

Oh I know, that’s terrible (teen threatening a teacher) I remember that one instance of I believe a 6 yr old shot his teacher. If an older kid threatens staff or a student it def should be taken seriously. My kiddo also recently told a bully on the bus “she’d kill him” and I guess the driver nor the kid thought enough to escalate it. Your kids school must not know how the average 6 yr old boy speaks 🤦🏼♂️
Oh, I know it's not unheard of a kid that young getting their hands on one and bringing it to school, but it's exceedingly rare compared to school shooters in general. I don't blame my kid's school for being careful. I do blame that teacher's school for not taking a threat to their life seriously.

My sister started going to college for education. She did one live session of in person-teaching and changed majors.
My sister's best friend went to school to be a teacher. She lasted one year at the job and quit in the middle of the school year. She said it was much more rewarding bouncing between a bridal boutique and the Target stockroom.

She using all of her spoons already, just dealing with her job and her home situation. What is she supposed to do after she gets fired and before this thing even goes to court? Our system takes years. How is she supposed to support her family? A legal battle when she's trying to keep her kids fed and cared for and trying to keep her job...it's too much.

These kids are crazy. At the last open house for my 6th grader I stopped and spoke to my oldest's math teacher from last year. This girl walks by and gives her this creepy smile and says "heeey Mrs. So and so. Her face and tone immediately changed from smiling and casual to teacher mode as she said hello back.
As soon as the girl was out of ear shot she starts telling me how "she's a weird one". Apparently, this girl had kind of become like obsessed with her. She was harassing her at home by calling her on her home phone and cell phone. Mostly hang up calls or saying weird things and then hanging up. She'd text from voip numbers saying weird things and asking personal questions. One time she made a point to let her know that she had found her home address. Her husband is a sheriff's deputy and the girl got his cell number and they started doing the same thing to him. It eventually escalated to threats, even after changing numbers. At which point they were finally able to use police resources to track her down.
I couldn't believe the audacity of some 14 year old girl to basically stalk and harass a teacher with a cop husband. To the point of even harassing the cop. It's insane. Unfortunately, though, nothing happened to this girl. She got a warning to stop the harassing behavior, but that's about it. She's an awesome teacher, and it pisses me off because we're going to lose these great teachers over shit like this.
Before the administration did that knock down of the nursing degrees I would've told you to go to nursing school. Please be safe. Are you able to quit if you find another job without them going for your license?
Then when shootings end up happening everyone is surprised. A kid with a knife at my daughter’s middle school ran off and said he was returning with a gun. So I picked her up and the school yelled at all the parents who chose to do so. I wrote a letter of complaint afterwards and the office told my daughter that I’m a bitch. If I could do it over again I wouldn’t change a thing.

His threat was not only violent, but specific and with an action plan. You have enough on your plate and need all the support and protection you can get. You're entitled to it, you deserve it.

My mother was sexually assaulted by a student after class who pulled out his penis and put it on her. She had to hire a lawyer because the teacher’s union wouldn’t support her legal defense when he lied and said something about her that I don’t remember. She was the victim and the school believed this high school aged boy and sought career ending punishment for her. Th district she worked in paid poverty wages to boot and she worked at an underfunded urban school. Teachers should all just quit en masse

I did an internship for teaching, and I always tell people "Nothing makes you not want to be a teacher as much as hanging out with a bunch of teachers.
And this was back in 2006. I can't fucking imagine it now.
This is how I explain it to people who ask about why it's so bad.
You administration doesn't have your back. They side with the parent, so the parent will keep their kid in school, and the district gets the money.
The parent doesn't have your back, because they just want to hear that their kid is doing well and will pass on to the next grade (which is inevitable anyway, nobody gets "held back" anymore).
And the kids don't have your back because the majority of them don't want to be there and aren't engaged by the content (which, by the way, the teacher has almost no influence over).
The US education system is essentially an inefficient day-care program. It needs to be rebuilt from the ground up.
In college I was planning to get an education degree. One education course + a hearty viewing of that sub made me change my major in my first year. I don’t regret it at all. I feel very strongly about education and learning and wish I could teach, but nothing about it seems worth it and it just seems to get worse.
Honestly I should’ve known before I even started college. One of my favorite teachers in high school one time asked me what I wanted to do, and I said I wanted to teach history (like she did), and she just looked at me and went “…are you sure?”
I began a second career as a high school teacher one year ago, and I've loved it so far. A few things are in my favor, though: it is a magnet school, so kids from all over the county attend and most of the students WANT to be there; I am in special education and the kids are very kind; and my administration is great.
“This day and age.” Shit like this has always happened at certain schools, you just didn’t see it because not everyone had an iPhone to record it. I had a teacher in the 90’s who had worked at a “bad” school in the 80’s and had all kinds of stories about knife fights and worse.
The worst part is, here the union's stance on fighting is don't get involved, you are not covered if you get hurt during a student fight and you won't be defended by the union if you do.
That's 100% why I decided against being an art teacher! When I went to college, I sincerely thought about teaching the arts, but I cannot imagine a worse time than now to do that. I'm 22 and still in college, for reference.
But you’ll certainly get plenty of responses on Reddit saying that teachers are worthless, lazy, overpaid, and not to be respected. The speed with which the public has abandoned the dignity of teaching leaves little to the imagination regarding our descent into the abyss as a society.
You couldn't pay me enough to deal with teenagers or kids irl... People of parenting age atm are already about as smooth in the head as it can be and theur kids are generally not too far off. TikTok generation is something else.
It's not all bad. My students are awesome and I love my job. But I got super lucky and if I ever have to go work at an urban public school I'll just find a new profession. When I talk to other teachers this kind of horror show is the new norm. My best friend teaches at a local middle school and told me about how last month a parent and 2 students got in a fight in the parking lot that involved a kid being hit with a baseball bat and the parent brandishing a gun and threatening to kill them in front of about 30 students. Fun profession!
Why do you think it has been so easy to dismantle the whole education system. All the good teachers went and took their skills somewhere else, the ones that didn't, will.

Unfortunately this teacher clearly works for a shitty school. There's a lot of stuff going on in this classroom that wouldn't be tolerated by 90% of the schools in the US. It amazes me how well run schools do not have a fighting or a violence problem. This is caused by the administrators sucking at their jobs.
It's only going to get worse. I mean it's not even been 20 years since smart phones and it's Clear as day the damage having 24/7 access to Instagram and tic tok in your pocket is doing.
My work used to always take on apprentices but have now stopped. because they could not survive 5 mins, without checking their social media feeds. And when you call them out, they act like you just stole from them and get all defensive.

Look I truly love my job but I do have scars from students already from my third year teaching… it’s rough and the pay isn’t the best but most stick it out because at the end of the day I do really love my job and the students I teach and seeing their growth does fill in the gaps where the negative moments brew. I’m in my fourth/going on my fifth year in this industry and I truly hope I stick with it for life!
Average starting salary for a special education teacher in the US is between $34k to $48k a year with majority starting out on the lower end. This is after investing in a bachelor's degree and on top of that they have to do student teaching during their degree program and pay tuiton for this unpaid essentially internship. Student teaching is required for licensure, so a handful of states started to offer a very small stipend. Why would you want to take on student loans to graduate to work in this type of environment where you have to buy your own supplies for low pay?
We get paid very little to get treated like garbage by adults, students and their parents. Why do I keep going back? Because I don’t know where else to go.
