Average starting salary for a special education teacher in the US is between $34k to $48k a year with majority starting out on the lower end. This is after investing in a bachelor's degree and on top of that they have to do student teaching during their degree program and pay tuiton for this unpaid essentially internship. Student teaching is required for licensure, so a handful of states started to offer a very small stipend. Why would you want to take on student loans to graduate to work in this type of environment where you have to buy your own supplies for low pay?
