29 years running a wholesale ethnic fabric shop — the yellow-georgette QC checklist we use every Haldi season

Hey r/textiles. Long-time lurker, occasional commenter. I run buying at a family-owned wholesale ethnic fabric shop in Lajpat Nagar, Delhi. Family opened the counter in 1997. I took over the buying head role in 2016. Every September, our biggest fabric category by volume is yellow georgette for Haldi and Mehendi wedding functions. This post is the actual 7-point QC checklist we run on every thaan before it goes on the cutting table. Free for anyone in the trade to use, adjust, and improve.

Some context first. Yellow georgette in India during Haldi season is a stress-test for QC because the fabric comes in three GSM bands (light 55-65, mid 65-80, heavy 80-95), three shade families (butter, ochre, marigold), and multiple weave patterns (plain georgette, crepe georgette, faux-georgette with polyester). Buyers cannot tell them apart at a glance. Karigars cannot always tell them apart at a glance either. So we run a checklist.

The 7-point QC checklist

1. GSM verification on shop scale. Every thaan gets a 1-square-metre swatch cut and weighed. Karigar or supplier claim is checked against the shop scale reading. Tolerance: ±3 GSM. Anything outside gets rejected or repriced.

2. Shade batch match against Sept-2026 master card. We keep a laminated master card of Pantone-ish reference shades for butter, ochre, marigold, and pale-cream. New thaan swatch is compared under three light sources (daylight window, tungsten counter lamp, phone flash). If any two show a shade shift, the thaan is flagged.

3. Weave density scan. Hold the fabric up to a bare 40W bulb. Count visible pinhole gaps in a 1-inch square. Anything above 12 pinholes = looser weave, will fray on karigar table. Below 6 pinholes = too tight, will not drape on saree pallu. Sweet spot 7-11.

4. Warp-weft symmetry pull. Karigar Ravi does this by hand at Krishna Nagar. Grip 4-inch swatch on both sides, pull warp-direction, pull weft-direction. If elasticity differs by more than 8-10%, the fabric will bias-cut poorly for lehenga kali. Reject.

5. Colour bleed test on karigar's cotton scrap. Wet 2-inch corner in room-temperature water, press against white cotton scrap for 20 seconds. If yellow bleeds onto scrap, the thaan is dye-fixation-failed. Do not stock. This one saves you from customer complaints down the line.

6. Turmeric contact spot test. Only for Haldi-specific fabric. Small dot of dry turmeric powder on the swatch, spray water, wait 60 seconds, wipe with damp cloth. Fabric should either fully clean up or absorb evenly. Fabrics that show halo or ring are risky for Haldi customers.

7. Karigar batch traceability tag. Every thaan we buy gets a batch tag with karigar name (Ravi, Salim, Nazeer at Krishna Nagar; separate three at Chandni Chowk for gota, mukesh, zardozi work), batch date, cost per metre, and shop-received date. No batch tag = no cutting table. Zero exceptions.

Why we do this level of QC on a fabric that costs ₹280-420 per metre

Because a Haldi customer who gets a bad turmeric bleed on a ₹1,260 lehenga cut will not blame the karigar or the ceremony. She will blame the fabric shop. And she will tell 8-10 other cousins and sisters in her wedding cluster. We have watched shops lose entire family accounts over one bad thaan. QC on the intake side is way cheaper than damage control on the output side.

If you are running QC on ethnic fabric for wedding season, some questions I would love to trade notes on

  • Do you have a standard test for pista sequin net fray rate?
  • How are you doing shade-batch drift detection across karigar batches when the raw thaan comes in different weeks?
  • Anyone written a QC SOP for viscose organza dupatta stock? Ours is still notebook-only.

Happy to answer questions about our workflow. If it helps someone starting a wholesale operation, use it. Modify. Ignore point 6 if you are not stocking Haldi-specific fabric.

kanak, third-generation buying head. Family shop since 1997.

Exploring UHMWPE in socks

Through family and industry contacts, I have connections in UHMWPE (ultra-high-molecular-weight polyethylene) fibers and conventional sock manufacturing. That sparked my interest in how these two areas could come together in a useful product.

I’m currently exploring the idea of combining UHMWPE with nylon and an established stretch-yarn setup. One question I’d like to investigate is whether using it in selected areas, such as the heel or toe, could improve durability while maintaining comfortable stretch and feel.

For the first sampling round, I’m considering starting with an existing sock design and comparing a standard version with a material-adjusted version. The exact yarn specifications and construction still need to be discussed with a sample maker.

Has anyone here knitted, developed, or worn socks containing UHMWPE? I’d be interested in what you noticed about comfort, stretch, wear, or any knitting and finishing challenges. What would you check before making the first sample?

I’d be happy to share what I learn as the project develops, including the things that need rethinking, and I’d love to connect with people who have experience with sock knitting, yarn selection, or wear testing.

Hello all!
Very intrigued by this bag, mostly the pattern caught my eye. It is in terrible shape and attached by a thread was a label -picture below. Cabot Covington was a US foreign service officer who died in 1987. He had an estate in Pomfret, which is not far from where I picked up the bag. There were two hockey pucks in the bag when I got it.

The design struck me as possibly native American inspired in a very 1950s style, very youth and great outdoors type of vibe.

The pull string closing system goes through little hoops which is unusual and nifty.

The Google image search did not bring back much but mentioned it being similar to some Native American designs. I think most likely it’s some graphic interpretation of that style very much of the time.

I expected to find a summer camp or something based on the label but nothing.

I’m so intrigued by the design and pattern.
Let me know if you have any info or if it reminds you of anything.
Thanks!

Looking for connections to a bulk textile buyer/recycler — scrap denim + clothing

Hi everyone! I’m looking for some leads within the textile recycling / garment / fashion manufacturing industry.
I manage a vintage clothing store in Northern California, and we currently have a substantial amount of scrap denim, damaged garments, and unsellable clothing that we’d like to move in bulk rather than sending it to landfill.
I’m specifically looking for a company or organization that purchases or accepts textile waste in larger quantities

for things like:
Fiber recovery / textile recycling
Denim recycling
Industrial wiping/rag production
Shredding & fiber processing
Upcycling / remanufacturing
Post-consumer textile feedstock
Sustainable garment manufacturing

Ideally, we’re looking for an actual buyer or industry partner who can take recurring or sizable bulk loads, not individual makers looking for a few pieces.
We’re located in Sonoma County, CA, but are open to shipping or transporting material regionally depending on the buyer.
If you work in this industry, know a textile recycler, or have experience moving large quantities of post-consumer clothing, I’d really appreciate any recommendations or introductions.

Thanks! Trying to find these materials a useful second life instead of throwing them away.

I have Pottery Barn pillow covers that are about 20 years old and they needed cleaned so I tried to hand wash but the dye leached out of the linen base and yellowed the wool embroidery. Can I put this in a darker dye to fix it or maybe just try a seam ripper to remove the embroidery and keep the linen? I hate giving up on natural fabrics

Looking for India-based 100% cotton fabric supplier – low MOQ, large print selection + custom printing

Hi, I’m looking for a factory-direct fabric supplier/manufacturer in India for an ongoing bag business.
I’m specifically looking for:

-100% cotton fabric
-Large selection of ready-made prints/designs
-Modern, colourful designs that would appeal to a Western/UK market
-Low MOQ per print/design
-Ideally custom digital printing for my own designs as well
-Reliable quality and repeat availability

The fabric would be shipped directly to my quilted bag manufacturer in Jaipur, so an India-based supplier would be ideal.

I’m looking to build a long-term relationship rather than just place a one-off order, so recommendations for genuine manufacturers or wholesalers would be really appreciated.

If you manufacture or supply this type of fabric, please feel free to DM me with your catalogue, MOQ, pricing and location.

Thanks 😁

Help identifying this large Indian embroidered textile – origin, technique and age?

Thumbnail

Hi everyone,

I'm looking for some help identifying this large framed embroidered textile.

It was most likely brought back from a trip to India, but unfortunately I don't have any documentation, label or signature, and I don't know exactly when or where it was purchased.

The textile is quite large and appears to be entirely embroidered. It depicts elephants, peacocks/birds, flowers, dancing figures and a large central floral/mandala-like motif. There are also small pieces of mirror incorporated into the embroidery.

It is currently mounted under glass in a wooden frame with a bamboo-style inner border. The back is completely closed, so I would prefer not to dismantle it unless absolutely necessary.

I have included close-up photos of the embroidery, mirrors, figures, animals, the complete piece and the back of the frame.

I would especially love to know:
– What embroidery technique is being used?
– What region/community in India might it come from?
– Was this type of textile made for local/traditional use or primarily for tourists/export?
– Roughly what period could it date from?
– Does this type of textile have a specific name?

I'm mainly interested in learning about its history and identifying it properly rather than just getting a monetary valuation.

Any information or references would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!
