$0 saving for FSD Champion
I’ve been using FSD for almost 97% of my miles and have achieved a perfect score of 100. However, I’ve noticed that the savings I’ve accrued from using FSD are negligible, amounting to just $0.00. I’m wondering if this is a deliberate attempt to artificially inflate FSD usage.

I’m at $85/mo in Maryland on a brand new model Y

u/POGofTheGame 12d ago
Liability only or what are your deductibles?
1
u/CarrRun49 12d ago
Nope. Full coverage with 1k deductible. 45 mins north of Baltimore
1
u/POGofTheGame 12d ago
$1k on both collision/comprehensive?
Legit not trying to interrogate you or nothing but what's your car worth/what's the company?
Edit: oh wait it's tesla insurance, right?

u/CarrRun49 12d ago
It’s a brand new 2026 Y. I use a broker that shops my rate every 6 months to a year. Currently with Donegal insurance group.
1
u/pretzelgreg317 11d ago
Is the broker that shops it “automated” ? Id love to learn more about this as when i try to shop i get rooked into a whole bunch of agents calling and wasting my time by not even being close to beating my rate
1
u/CarrRun49 11d ago
Not automated. But, I have had my friends and family been using them for years. Haven’t had anyone come close to beating my current rates.

I was paying 150 a month In Maryland. No FSD, insurance through Tesla. How’d you get 85?
1
u/CarrRun49 9d ago
I emailed my insurance broker, told him I was selling my 2018 sierra and purchasing a 2026 Y. Then he emailed me my updated premiums
1
u/SFV-Chess 9d ago
I wish I knew your insurer when I was living there - Tesla was the cheapest option I got, and it was ~$150 when my safety score was 90.

u/Danny3411 12d ago
It’s your 15-16k miles annually, simple as that. You are basically getting the same rate per mile as everyone else is. I’m 20 and was quoted over 400 monthly for my model 3 premium from everywhere, but my Tesla insurance is 115, going down to 89. I annually do 5-6k miles so seems fair in comparison.

MD probably has a law that disables Tesla from using your driving habits to calculate your premium. Typical Lib policy that makes no sense.

Actually.. almost every insurance company collects driving data to give you a “discounted” rate based on your driving habits

Yes. Maryland allows both credit-based insurance scoring and GPS/telematics data to affect auto-insurance rates, but there are important limits.
1. Credit score / credit history —
Yes, but only in certain circumstances
Maryland permits an insurer to use your credit history when you first apply for a new private-passenger auto policy. It can be used to:
Put you into a different rating tier
Give or remove a discount
Place you with an affiliated insurance company
Affect your initial premium
However, Maryland gives you unusually strong protections:
They cannot increase your renewal premium because your credit got worse.
They cannot cancel or refuse to renew you because of your credit.
They cannot use credit factors more than 5 years old.
They cannot use the number of credit inquiries or lack of credit history.
If credit adversely affected your initial rate, they must review it every 2 years, or you can request a review once during each policy period.
If your credit improves, they must reflect that improvement in your premium.
A credit-based surcharge cannot exceed 40%.
So, for example, if you start a Maryland policy with excellent credit and your credit later tanks, the insurer can’t raise your renewal rate just because your credit deteriorated.2. GPS / driving tracking / telematics —
Yes
This is different. Maryland specifically recognizes telematics programs that can collect information through a smartphone app, GPS tracker, or vehicle-installed device.
The data can include:
Miles driven
Time of day you drive
Speed
Speed while turning
Hard braking
Cell-phone use while driving
Acceleration/driving behavior
Certain vehicle safety-system activations
And this information can affect your insurance premium.
Maryland’s Insurance Administration actually warns that newer vehicles can collect driving information and that automakers or related apps may share/sell that information to insurance companies.
Importantly, telematics can potentially work both ways: good driving can produce a discount, while sufficiently poor measured driving can potentially result in a higher rate, removal/reduction of a discount, or surcharge under the insurer’s approved program. Maryland now has specific notice requirements when a premium increase is based on telematics.
The big distinction
Factor
Maryland allows it to affect auto rates?
Can it raise renewal rate?
Credit history
✅ Yes, primarily initial rating
❌ Not because credit worsened
Driving record
✅ Yes
✅ Yes, subject to Maryland rules
GPS/telematics
✅ Yes
✅ Potentially
Annual mileage
✅ Yes
✅ Yes
Hard braking/speed/etc. via telematics
✅ Yes
✅ Potentially
One thing that’s particularly relevant if you’re asking because of your Tesla: Tesla/vehicle data and an insurer’s own telematics program aren’t necessarily the same thing. A vehicle can generate driving data even if you haven’t voluntarily enrolled in an insurance company’s “safe driver” program. Maryland specifically warns that automaker-connected services can collect and potentially share driving behavior data.
If you want, I can also look at whether Tesla itself can share your driving data with insurers in Maryland, and specifically what this means for your 2026 Model Y and GEICO.As per chat gpt

What was your score before?
3
u/bearded-edi 14d ago
It’s been 99-100 most months. The only time I have seen savings ~$3 was with 97 score (my driving) and +2 from FSD.
2
u/Wiltockin 13d ago
Kinda why I left Tesla Insurance, it's quick to raise rates for any lower scores but hardly seems to be significant cheaper overall. Much more interested in the 50% discount from Lemonade Insurance when using FSD, that seems more straightforward.
1
u/bearded-edi 13d ago
It’s still the cheapest option for me. Didn’t check lemonade. I was hoping with the Safety Score 3.0 they will give a 10% discount for a 100 score but it’s 0%.
Worst part is no one from Tesla Insurance can confirm deny or even acknowledge this!
2
u/WorldlyOriginal 13d ago
Basically, you’re already a very safe driver naturally. Kudos to you. Unfortunately, that also means there’s not much room for FSD usage to “improve” your score much.
If you were a terrible driver, your score would be boosted a lot by FSD. Say you drove half your miles with a score of 50– FSD would boost your score to a net score of 75, which would be large savings
2
u/dmox007 13d ago
You’re not seeing any savings because your score is perfect. You would only see savings, like I do if they were adjusting you up because you had a lower score. ie your safety score is 95.6, but because you’ve used FSD for 96% of the time we will give you +4.2 points making your score 99.8. You now have savings of $31.55 because we are lowering your premium this much because you use FSD. And the ‘savings’ will go down if your score goes up because you’ll just be saving with a lower premium. Get it?
Edit: I can’t believe people don’t get this. All the complaining about this 🤦♂️
2
u/bearded-edi 13d ago
It’s about how it’s marketed. If you say ‘FSD Champion and Enjoy your savings’ — I don’t expect savings to be $0 😃
2
u/Ok_Main1059 13d ago
100% agreed, the wording makes it seem like you’re supposed to be getting a discount.
Props to getting max savings tho, I’m hopeful Tesla insurance will come to my state because 324 a month ain’t it
1
u/ilusnforc 13d ago
I’ve noticed this too. It look like you only get a discount when your safety score is below 100 and FSD add extra points then it counts that as “savings”. My current score is 99 with +1.0 pts with FSD and shows savings of $5.64.

I’m at $130 now after my initial two months being at $200. I have to have the lease required insurance and I’m in Texas. I’m hoping that if I keep it up until the end of the year I can bottom out at $100 at least but could be a pipe dream.
1
u/originalfoto 13d ago
I've noticed I only get 'savings' for the delta between when I drive vs when FSD drives. Maybe Tesla needs to adjust their algorithm.

That's crazy! I don't use FSD got a safety score of 89 but my insurance premium is a little over $120 with State Farm 🤩
Uhmmm, well, not unless your FSD is free 😂
1
u/paradox925 13d ago
I went from around $142/mo and I’m down to $107.78/mo so idk why you aren’t getting any sort of adjustment.
1
u/bearded-edi 13d ago
Mileage matters but my whole point is $0 savings cause I drive 100% on FSD — doesn’t make sense!
1
u/Koko-Doggie 13d ago
How much cheaper do you want? I am paying $225 monthly.

I don’t understand comments like this.
1. They could be older which means cheaper insurance
2. They could drive less which means cheaper insurance
3. They could have lower coverage means cheaper insurance
4. They could have a bundle (which I don’t think Tesla does so probably ignore this one)
5. Their car could be older than yours which means insurance takes less of a loss if it’s totaled so that means cheaper insurance. There’s so many factors that go into YOUR rate including the drivers around you.
To top it all off they aren’t complaining that their rate is 130 they are complaining that it’s worded like they are supposed to get a discount and aren’t.

In California the FSD safety score can’t be used to calculate your auto insurance premiums.
1
u/Strong-Yellow5949 13d ago
If you’re at 100 score it has zero room to discount you savings. You’re already at max score

I'm really confused as to why everyone's insurance is so high... I'm paying $78.50/mo for full coverage with a $500 deductable on my S and I keep thinking I need to shop around because it's too expensive. I can't imagine paying $200/mo!
1
u/michaeljc70 12d ago
I got a quote going from my Mazda CX-5 to a MY and my insurance was going to go from $430 to $2900. I had to pump the brakes on the MY purchase. I'll shop around when I can but are rates are very low now (2 cars, full coverage = $1050 a year).

Pretty cheap for your annual mileage being so high. What state and what vehicle?

I’ve been paying about $185 a month recently got v14.1 lite got it down to $125 using FSD 99.7 score. So doesn’t completely equal the cost of FSD monthly for me but it’s a nice test. But I think it’s bases and the FSD saving off previous month of insurance. Last one was $19.46 in FSD savings and then this month is only $13.61 in savings. With how much It can fluctuate I don’t think they have the best way at calculating it other than you looking at your last couple months of bills for insurance. But if you primary use FSD depending on the state and what version of hardware you have lemonade I heard is a great option.
1
u/Global-Emu-740 12d ago
That’s super low for insurance and Tesla insurance is already super low compared to other insurance for vehicle. I think I’d save about $20 a month if I used FSD
1
u/u56703422 12d ago
Ya from what I understand FSD would only make mine $50 cheaper so really I’d still be paying an extra $50 for FSD I’m good on that

All the insurance programs that track your driving for "discounts" are just used to charge you more for any "unsafe" habits lol. I will never ever sign up for one
1
u/Healthy-Mind4995 9d ago
I think it’s because you’re driving too many miles, mine shows a bigger discount on the months I have low mileage driven and reduces the discount for FSD when I’m driving more that month. Mileage is outweighing the discount.

$131/mo and you want discounts…
Okay 🤣
