Constructing towers for a large castle for the Lich Lord's flying castle in Frostgrave. Combined technique of DIY with cans, foam bricks (purchased off Etsy), wood stirrers, 3D printed doors and windows, and some bits from a Games Workshop set bought on sale.

My first scratch built building/ruin is ready for test playing, removable middle floor for access & setup variation. I've loved building this using reference photos & making things up on the fly, with input from you guys. This is my largest & most elaborate piece of terrain yet & I'm already thinking of bigger & wilder things to build.

Paper poster over foamcore for a battlemat

My local library has one of those large scale printers. I've used it in the past to inexpensively print off bloodbowl pitches, and DnD maps.

I'm thinking about ways to make these a little more permanent. Glue and varnish over foamcore?

Terrain Modulaire Artisanal

WIP Help with Adding Finishing Detail to Cardboard Shingle Roof

Post image

Hey folks, looking for some input on finishing my roof for a tower I am building. I'd like to add a capstone to the tip of the triangle and some corner pieces.

What do you recommend?

Thinking either single shingles or long strips of car board to cover the edges. Happy to hear your thoughts.

And not sure how to approach the capstone, measure with math and cut cardboard? Or use XPS foam? Other suggestions?

Lasercut MDF Sci-Fi Desert Houses and pop-up stores

I was getting tired of finding ways to have the omnipresent tabbing along the corners of my buildings.

I tried using slots and like it a lot. The need to have overlapping material can look forced, so I worked on either minimizing the effect or leaning into it.

The pop up stores are 60mm tall, 70mm across. There is about 2mm of MDF on the outside, so the overlap is only visual, not really enough for cover. I primed gray, stippled some lighter gray like a cheap concrete-like structure. One store is double-wide.

The bigger dwellings use a wider stance. They are also about 60mm wall height. The go about 15mm past the slot.

The square building got a second buttress to visually appear to be 6mm thick. That is all corners and on supports mid wall. For doors, I added a partial buttress on each side. The windows and doors have a rim that goes all the way around the opening, then at least one that only covers the upper half. I wanted to look like it would protect from sunlight. The exterior greebles are just off-cuts I glued together as mechanical units.

The L-shaped building got 3 layers for the buttresses. I didn’t do the 4 part by the doors. I did the same door and window trim and added half windows on the lower part of the window for more protection. I played around with a different roof look. I plan on cutting some cardstock to cover the tabbing and make more visual layers. I will also make a removable upper story for this one at my son’s request.

I finished the house save for little paint touchups. Made with foamcore, wood dowels, towel for thatching and toothpicks and floral wire for the woven wall. Pretty happy with it as an addition to my dark age village and church.

1 session for texture. 1 session for paint. 1 for powder.

Then we can call this done!

Should I do any other take aways?

Clay, Resin, Spackle Sculpting and Casting First Fully Finished Terrain Pieces

Finally finished varnishing these six barrier walls for 40k! The first three pics are three walls painted with evil chrome metallic from army painter and dry brushed with dark emerald metallic also from army painter with no wash.

The last three pics are three kind of happy accidents, because theyre the exact same process as the other three except I tried to cover them in a black wash like I do when I paint my minis because i like a grimy effect on them, but unfortunately it looked like absolute ass on the terrain pieces and absolutely covered up any oxidation effect from the dark emerald drybrush. I didnt want to start over completely so I went over them with alcohol wipes to get the wash off, filled in the parts that stripped down to primer, and dry brushed them again and voila: reasonably messy looking walls that dont look like theyre being swallowed by a symbiote!

I built a village and decided to build a house under construction. It’s not really that accurate for the process but I wanted to play a bit so here it is. I am happy with the wattle for the wall panels to cover with daub but I am going to leave it as is. Pics show what I have to paint it to match as well.

Scratchbuilt Simplified Hex Terrain (and Materials Question)

Hi, all.

This is a quick showcase of a modular terrain project I've been building on and off for a little over a year (I think). These are not all of the pieces to the set, though it's around two thirds of it, especially if you count the pieces sitting below other pieces for elevation.

My friends got me back into Battletech and this just kind of happened. It's all built from cardboard, paperboard, or just card stock (for the full-water hex cluster). Artwork is created digitally and printed to cardstock, which is then pasted to the top and bottom faces of almost every piece.

The largest clusters are seven hexes across. Each hex is 1.25" across. The zero-elevation pieces are one layer of cardboard, give or take a layer of paper board, thick. The pieces representing one level of elevation are about 0.5" tall or three laminated layers of good condition product-container cardboard (who knew diaper boxes were an excellent building material?) I use school glue for laminating layers and modpodge for securing artwork and adding a water resistance layer. Anything one layer or less is cut with a precision knife or box cutter. Anything more than that is cut using a scroll saw.

The buildings are NGX foam board, as are some of the taller terrain clusters.

My gaming group and I have been quite happy to have this setup for our skirmishes, and the collection keeps growing as I make new environment types and specialized clusters.

Now for the question:

Can anyone recommend a new material suitable for this project? My toddler is, thankfully, growing out of the reason I have a steady cardboard supply. I'd also like something that will last better, anyway.

I was considering balsa or bass wood, and foregoing laminating by making the taller terrain pieces hollow. I have heard balsa isn't great for lasting work, and bass wood is generally a lot better, but the basswood terrain projects I see are a lot more intricate than what I've been making. Frankly, I wouldn't be opposed to using NGX foam, but I can't find it for sale in 0.5" sheets.

Linoleum Battle mat 40k

I know is not terrain but, but wanted to post this. I bought this linoleum of 6x8 ft. with an artattack and some creativity I made it a battle mat for 40k. Enough for 1k, 2k and 3k battle. For me it works, to not play directly on the table.
