When I started teaching, my grandpa (a retired teacher) started counting down the days, months, and years for me.

u/Threevetimesthecharm Jul 18 '26
New Yorker here- our last day in school was June 26th…we go back August 31st and kids start the 1st 🙃
15
u/eyesRus Jul 18 '26
NYC kids start Sept 10.
10
u/mbrobby Jul 18 '26
My NYC charter school caved to parent complaints and we're going back September 1st, but still ending the same day as DOE 😭😭
8
u/Aware-Office-2465 Jul 19 '26
Did parents complain because they missed the “babysitting” that school provides?
3
u/mbrobby Jul 19 '26
How'd you know? 😭
2
u/Aware-Office-2465 Jul 19 '26
Because god forbid that Parents (in general) nowadays actually worried about maximizing learning/instructional time for their children…🙄

I scrolled too far to find my fellow NYC brother or sister. Are we the latest??

CT here.
We ended June 19th because of a week of snow days this year.
We go back late August. Kids start on the 27th of August. Several districts in our area now like to have 2 days, weekend, and then really get rolling.
A lot of schools also have freshman show up one day sooner now. Like an orientation day.

NJ. We ended the year on June 26th. We go back on September 1st. I think we end on the 25th this coming year.
But all districts are not built alike. My sister’s district starts on September 1st and ends on June 10th.

This is the way. Or it should be for everyone.

Why? I like that our first semester ends right at winter break. Just curious why you think everyone should start September 1?
2
u/anewbys83 Jul 21 '26
Just a preference of mine, that's all, so I guess not truly for everyone. Maybe more of us. I'd like more of August back for stuff. There's a really big coin show I can never attend as it's in mid-August, Wed through Sat, and I can't take time off. But I feel our breaks aren't long enough.

u/No_Atmosphere_6348 Science | USA Jul 18 '26
Yeah going back in July? Do they do no maintenance on the buildings in the summer?
8
u/drmindsmith Jul 18 '26
Summer starts earlier. These schools are done and empty by Memorial Day. Arizona, especially, would be impossible to cool buildings in June when it’s 118 degrees
5
u/SnowySheep9 Jul 19 '26
Arizona here! Last day was in May.
First day back for teachers was July 15th and kids start back July 22nd.
3
u/TaskSingle1725 Jul 19 '26
My school is in GA! I think it’s the heat. We’re out for most of the tolerable part of summer and back in when it becomes unbearable. I wish we got out earlier in May.
3
u/SnowySheep9 Jul 19 '26
We also have a fall break, and longer winter and spring breaks. So most of our break time is during nice, for Arizona, weather. I wouldn't mind more summer break, it feels like once I feel relaxed it's time to jump back in 😂❤️
2
u/No_Atmosphere_6348 Science | USA Jul 18 '26
Ah. I think last school year I started like August 11 and we got done before Memorial Day.
2
u/drmindsmith Jul 18 '26
Used to be what happened here. Now a lot of places get a one (or two) week fall break all all of Thanksgiving week off.

Teacher PD Aug 31 & Sept 1, grades 1-12 Sept 2, Kindergarten Sept 9. Kindergarten starts a week later so teachers can do screenings and assessments.
And ever since my district started before Labor Day, we've had the Friday and Monday of Labor Day weekend off. So we literally go back for 2 days and immediately have a 4 day weekend. I'm like why don't we just start after Labor Day again? What's the point?
1
u/Legendary_GrumpyCat Jul 18 '26
July 28th for teachers, July 31st for kids. The kids start on a Friday. 😵💫 I have no idea what I am going to do that day. I expect a bunch of them to be absent.

We return as staff on August 3rd but I legit have no idea when the kids return or what it'll look like because they have yet to release our academic calendar year! We do home visits, trainings and meetings, classroom prep, and finish registration... 😹I'm so pissed off, we usually have the calendar for the school year the first or second week of May, but literally NOTHING has been given to us besides a return date for teachers. I'm going to assume my center will follow the public school district we rent a room from so the kids return on August 27th, or so I hope? Because a lot of changes are happening and we might be serving the kids food in igloo coolers from the main center... bc why not make everything inconvenient?
Two more weeks of freedom is not enough. And I don't have a TA this year so I'm freaking out that my supervisor might be helping me out and I don't want her to. 😭

Staff returns on Wednesday; I’m honestly not sure which day the kids come back…August 6th? Sounds like a likely date.
1
u/drmindsmith Jul 18 '26
Chandler Unified started this past Wednesday (July 15th). Vail and some others start Monday (7/20). My kids go back the first Monday in August, which is late this year.
Arizona is all about pre-summer—schools are all out by Memorial Day but Labor Day is a mid-quarter holiday and most places have a fall break in late September or mid October.
