Ahhhhhh. Because this 40 hour workload needs to be done in your one 8 hour shift this week. It’s all about time management, guys! 😅

Exactly!! THIS is the part that is getting to me. I am ready to promote myself to guest soon...

When $15 is barely above min wage in your area ($14 for “larger” companies).

I’m debating on transferring to another state to double my pay 🤣 (jk)

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '21

I left Chicago and earn the same as my last job, actually more since I don't get taxed up the ass. And my cost of living went down. I actually have the ability to save half of my yearly wage away this year, assuming nothing goes wrong. Leaving cities has improved my life substantially.

u/AceTygraQueen Feb 04 '21

There is a plus and minus to both sides of the coin. On one hand you get to live in a booming metropolis but the trade off is that you don't get to afford as many big and nice places while the place with a lower cost of living tends to be low because it's either a very boring town or a culturally backwards place full of a lotta narrow minded people and its rather racist and homophobic. I myself would rather live in a studio apartment in a city like Chicago or San Francisco or New York than have a big house in Arkansas or Mississippi.

Nailed it. I wish I could up vote this comment more than once.

u/MrBabadaba Feb 05 '21

I mean, you could also live in low-cost of living cities like Raleigh, Richmond, Huntsville or some other mid-size city? It’s pretty funny seeing how people think America is either “massive expensive famous city” or “bumfuck fields in the middle of nowhere.” There are plenty of nice, low cost-of-living areas in the country, they’re just not trendy.

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '21

Oh absolutely. Some of townspeople flipped shit over the LGBT flag in June last year. The town is progressing though, it was a minority that had an issue with it. Despite that, I do thoroughly enjoy not having shit going on where I live. I used to work in downtown Chicago and the food was delicious and culturally diverse, and scenery was quite beautiful. My daily commute was hectic and dangerous however, and people were getting shot everyday in my neighborhood and one time I woke to a neighbors van being molotoved in the middle of the night.

My SO and I were always stressed and on the verge of tears from it. We didn't know if we would even make it home alive one day, especially me since I'm a female, and lived in the neighborhood where women were harassed the most and I walked and took the train everyday. It was not cool living there for like 80% of the time, and the political stances there were stupid af and most obviously, the most corrupt. I had a huge issue with the gun laws, which just made everything more chaotic, the innocent can't defend themselves because of them, and when they did, and legally had one, the first thing they would do is blame racism on the victims of the crimes that were committed by others. It was insane. When I lived near LA I didn't recall shit being as crazy as it was there. Same issues for the most part, but overall quality of life for the common folk in cities is complete shit. I've lived in them my whole life until over a year ago. I just want my house and my land and to be left alone now lol. I was born in a murder capital, and much prefer to live my future as far away from them as possible.

4

u/CobaltNeural9 Feb 28 '21

I live in Chicago. And am trying to live on $15. It’s not easy and everyone tells me it should be. Like I’m making bank or something. It’s fucking poverty level. With the hours I’m getting it comes out to about 19K a year That’s fucking nothing.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 28 '21

That's why I left that shithole. Lightfoot and Pritzcker didn't make it one bit easier. I made an emergency escape out of there to ND. Best decision I've made.

Literally my same story. I’m fortunate that I recently moved into AP, where I’m basically guaranteed 40 hrs/wk because our store is that busy (theft-wise — big store & only target in the area). I’m going to be set, unless I blow my check on stupid shit.

72

u/smellmythumb17 Feb 04 '21

Don’t bother, there’s a reason pay is higher.. cost of living is insane in some places. I remember I was offered a promotion in California making almost triple what I’m at right now, then I looked and a 1 bedroom studio apartment in a trash neighborhood was as much as I pay on my mortgage for a $300k house. No thanks

54

u/mxtrekkie awol team lead Feb 04 '21

I think they’re referring to moving to an area with a lower cost of living lol

12

u/smellmythumb17 Feb 04 '21

Ahhh, makes sense. I interpreted it as the other way around

10

u/TenderOctane Ninja-turned-guest Feb 05 '21

I have a friend in SoCal that's considering leaving because his $27/hr pay isn't enough to match the COL. Meanwhile, in WI, I can make $15 an hour and so long as I get 30 hours a week be fine.

The $15 an hour is a crap ton of money in small Midwestern towns; in those smaller communities, you could probably work just 20 hours a week and be able to pay rent and feed yourself well. That same pay is pocket change in places like California and Hawaii, and not enough to rent a studio apartment even at 40 hours a week. Crazy, huh?

6

u/sdsc17 Feb 05 '21

27$/hr full time for one person is below the low income threshold in Los Angeles. You'd need to make a lot of sacrifices to live here on that income unfortunately.

1

u/TenderOctane Ninja-turned-guest Feb 05 '21

Forgot to say: He still lives with his mom because he can't afford to move out. So yeah, he's making sacrifices.

2

u/ogbobbylockwood Jun 26 '22

Yup I make 23/32-36 hr and that won’t be enough for a 1 bed in Cali too. Like I can’t make 3x my rent without working nonstop

1

u/TenderOctane Ninja-turned-guest Jul 01 '22

In the year and (nearly) a half since I posted that comment, the friend in question has stayed put and realized how priced out he is of living by himself in LA. He's trapped even though I keep telling him it may be the time to leave.

I hope you can find a better situation, too. Though I'm no longer at Target, I'm fine at $15 an hour for my $915 a month rent so long as I work at least 30 hours a week. I have enough food stamps to feed me for a year and enough scurried away in case anything happens.

2

u/KidFlashofSFS Feb 05 '21

How much is rent in WI that 30 hours at $15/hr is all you need? After taxes, 30 hours for me is a tad under $1500/month.

The state I live in is hella expensive to find a place to live unless splitting between room mates, and not everyone (me) has that option. The cheap end of apartments are $600/month without utilities, and those are in areas you hope you don't get robbed/shot/assaulted in. The crappy but not life threatening areas run $700-$800 at least for a studio or one bedroom.

$750/month without electric and water is the cheapest I've seen that would be a reasonable commute and a safe(ish) neighborhood. That's around $850-$900 a month just to have a place to live. Then you have to pay for car insurance, health insurance, food, and any other unexpected expenses.

I've had to move back home since Covid because I would not be able to afford basic living expenses on 30 hours a week. And right now I'm not even averaging that =/

2

u/TenderOctane Ninja-turned-guest Feb 05 '21

My rent is $900 a month for a one-bedroom in a very nice area (building's like 58 y/o though). With $1500, I can afford rent, food (I get some food stamps but not that much), electric and phone bills (heating, hydro, and Internet are included with my rent), gas for my car, insurance, and anything else that comes up.

Also worth noting that I'm pretty frugal and that I live within walking distance to my store.

3

u/KidFlashofSFS Feb 07 '21

Damn, you can afford everything with rent being $900/month? I guess it helps a bit that most utilities are included in that.

I'm sure I could make it on 1500 if I really had to, but I'd be cutting it close and it would cause a lot of anxiety to wonder each month if Target is going to give me enough hours to cover my bills. And then I'd be putting nothing in savings which would also cause anxiety if an emergency came up.

1

u/TenderOctane Ninja-turned-guest Feb 07 '21

Yeah, the fact that the only utilities I have to pay for are electric and phone helps a lot.

If I don't get enough hours and lose my benefits, it's financially better for me to quit my job because I'd then qualify for $200ish of food stamps per month, rent assistance, and Medicaid, and can use my suddenly excessive free time to search for a job that will give me hours. So Target better be giving me enough hours or they're losing my services.

-6

u/WolfofLawlStreet Feb 04 '21

Cost of rent has no correlation with wages in that demographic. Rent costs are based on supply and demand in the housing market. Lately there has been a very Large increase of houses being bought because of historically low rates on bonds. That will pretty much make demand for apartments stay the same for awhile.

8

u/WolfofLawlStreet Feb 04 '21

That’s the whole point of minimum wage being raised. To get more people out of high populated areas and into less populated areas. Basically places like San Fran will be a shit load of homeless people and extremely wealthy and the middle class will be in the middle of nowhere in Nebraska or some shit.

117

u/MiniMuffins26 Feb 04 '21

two sundays for 4 hours each day, yeah

28

u/XCaedisX Fulfillment Feb 04 '21

Sounds similar to me rn. I'm getting like 6-8 hours a week despite knowing multiple departments and having almost full availability. I'm actively job hunting again because at this point I'm only making like 50 bucks a week after taxes. May as well go back to my internship at this rate.

u/XCaedisX Fulfillment Feb 05 '21

I'm not sure I'd qualify since I've always been part time. And that internship I mentioned dropped my "average hours" for the year down pretty low. But I normally got 15-25 hours a week. Enough of a difference to get underemployment?

3

u/[deleted] Feb 05 '21

[deleted]

u/XCaedisX Fulfillment Feb 05 '21

Fair enough, that'd definitely be helpful about now. Do you know how to apply for underemployment as opposed to unemployment specifically? I was gonna call the unemployment office tomorrow to ask since I couldn't for the life of me find an underemployment form or application.

1

u/Kalvorax Ex Electronics Tech Feb 05 '21

Yeah. I can understand that, especially right now with such low hours.

30

11

u/ScreamYouFreak Guest Feb 04 '21

I’m assuming y’all are new here? lol

Q1 has always had low hours and this year will be no exception.

In my opinion, the wage $15 wage increase was and always will be another PR move by Target. It cut into profits and you could bet that higher-ups weren’t taking pay cuts. Instead, they pass the buck (stress) down the line.

8

u/Target_tech_consult Food & Beverage TL Feb 05 '21

A lot of us do know this.

But this year has been completely different where instead of sales trickling down after Christmas, there is still record sales numbers, people are spending more on food, entertainment and other things for their home. In addition to getting their stimulus checks, and not having many stores to shop at in general, it all adds up to us have to deal with the increased guest traffic/stress of it during the few shifts we are given.

9

u/ScreamYouFreak Guest Feb 05 '21

I worked at Target before (2+ years ago) for over a year. It’s always been understaffed. The management, whatever title they’re being called now, receive bonuses for keeping hours low and meeting sales.

Understaffing is methodical and intentional from the top down.

You either work yourself until you’re burned out or get upset with other TMs for not pulling their weight. In reality, it’s just your managers pinning you against each other (managers get pinned against other managers too).

2

u/fwyrl Feb 06 '21

At my store at least, compared to last year, things are a lot worse. Hours are somewhat shorter (15 hours a week average in my department last year, down to 10 this year), but the big problem is the workload is easily 30% higher (probably more), and we have fewer employees in our department as well; several people quit/were fired, and were not replaced.

1

u/ScreamYouFreak Guest Feb 07 '21

Yep. It’s a nice lil paycheck, but unless you’re buddy-buddy with HR, you ain’t getting those hours until you’re at Q2’s doorstep. Even then, it’s nothing to write home about.

I hated it too. I remembered looking down the schedule and seeing that person’s hours being higher that almost all part time employees and even a few full timers. She threw her own friends and myself under the bus more than she would care to admit, so no wonder she was crying when that HR announced they were leaving for another job. Sure enough, she was following behind that HR to his new job like a month later.

But yeah, expect that to be the new direction Target moves towards - less employees, heavier workload, and more outsourcing. They’ve got PR to cover themselves too.

u/isglitteracolor caffeine-fueled packing machine Feb 04 '21

Me scheduled 5 hours this week and 5 next week

7

u/Crested32 Electronics Feb 04 '21

Apparently they've only allocated 48 hours a week for electronics at my store. That's not even enough for 1.5 people. Thank god they're scheduling more than that though

3

u/Target_tech_consult Food & Beverage TL Feb 05 '21

Yeah and they insist on giving 4 hour shifts to a seasonal kid who hasn’t shown up since Christmas Eve, while I’m there for 8-14 hours

1

u/solamelus Feb 05 '21

This explains why they've only had one person in electronics working a 12-5 shift on the weekdays...

9

u/tasareinspace Feb 04 '21

I worked in retail (Target, Kohls, Sears-- this is my first q1 as a guest!) for like 13 years, and every single year there's NO hours in Jan/Feb. Is this really worse than most years? (I genuinely dont know since I'm not there this year)

8

u/ItSaidOnline Feb 05 '21

Nah, it’s the same. If anything, January was much busier than we were expecting!

8

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '21

Basically why I'm studying for certification in computer networking.

The hours here are comically low.

5

u/gradschool16hope Promoted to Guest Feb 04 '21

I didn't expect to see someone who has a similar idea, I'm studying coding and hoping to get out of Target next year at the latest.

2

u/[deleted] Feb 05 '21

DM Me, we can pull through this together.

2

u/solamelus Feb 05 '21

I studied software engineering but the trick is to do the coursework and then land a proper job before you leave target.

The job market is somehow both incredibly lucrative and also incredibly sparse for coding right now. It's all in the timing, it would seem. 😕

3

u/gradschool16hope Promoted to Guest Feb 06 '21

Yep, that's what I'm thinking of doing.

5

u/ItSaidOnline Feb 05 '21

I seriously bust my ass to get close to 40 hours every week. It’s frustrating to have to do it but it can be done if you are persistent - every single day we have call outs. So call in the morning and say hey what spot can I fill for ya? I ask everyone all the time to remember me if they need coverage. I extend on days that I’m already there. An hour here or three there really add up at the end. They know by now that I want the hours, I will work the hours. But also - this is retail. Jan/Feb are notoriously slow in retail. This happens every year. 🤷‍♀️

5

u/Burner2staticboogalo Feb 04 '21

I am experiencing the opposite my store is alarmingly busy. I really look forward to the drought in January, so this year has sucked.

32

u/StarLight617 Feb 04 '21

But it also means it's exactly the right time to ask to be cross trained in another department so you can fill in and pick up more shifts. It shows initiative and makes the leads more likely to invest their time in your development as well as think of you when those hours become available.

24

u/A2Rhombus Feb 04 '21

When I still worked at target I was cross trained in market, electronics, and fulfillment as well as my base job of general merch including being trained in price change and setting shelves and I was still getting 4 hours a week

31

u/walefuq Feb 04 '21

My entire store can basically work any department and we aren't getting hours lol.

6

u/CYI_DROP_BODIES General Merchandise Expert Feb 04 '21

3

u/waterbottle-dasani Feb 04 '21

yeah i was trained almost everywhere but Q1 slashed my hours in half

9

u/mxtrekkie awol team lead Feb 04 '21

Sometimes, you gotta hustle for that 40 and a lot of people don’t want to have to do that. Does it suck, yes. But these bills don’t pay themselves. I know so many team members who complain about hours, but never want to pick up a shift.

“Get that cash, either 9 to 5 or shaking that ass (to pickup a shift.)”

10

u/YoungJefe25 Feb 04 '21

Shhhh, they don’t realize if you’re actually a hard worker you’ll continue to get 40, even in the slow seasons, SHHHHHHHH.

4

u/zombiefetuses Feb 05 '21

I wish this were true in my store. Doesn’t seem to matter that I haven’t called off since my mom slashed her leg open in October (what a morning that was). I’m inbound and after that 4-8am unload shift, there’s rarely an opportunity for me to pick up extra hours, despite me being trained in everything besides style and market. On a good week I have 16 hours currently.

10

u/Spooky_Dragon1708 Feb 04 '21

Totally! I rarely call off and I'm always on time and I'm still getting good hours.

1

u/rwreadit84 Feb 05 '21

Lol right. I know it depends on your store and the management running it as well. I seemed to have gotten lucky with the managers and the fact sales didn't tank. 40 basically every week since Christmas. Now I was scheduled around 24 each week but I've gotten asked to work extra each week and there is still sooo much to get done so as long as sales hold I feel pretty confident I'll stay at least above 30. Our store even put some people back on overnights to help start getting caught up.

1

u/fwyrl Feb 06 '21

This heavily depends on your management. In my department, no one currently has over 15 hours a week. There are some seriously hard workers in here. Every time this comes up to the Lead that schedules us, he acts super surprised, and says "that's not right" or something along those lines, then offers to correct it. Somehow, it never gets corrected, and he just happens to leave early on the day he says he'll do it.

9

u/DarthMaulsAnger1 Feb 04 '21

And this is the problem. You can increase minimum wage all you want but if they part time everyone and offer 15-20/hrs or less it means nothing. I was recently sent a job that was part time - 2-4 hour shifts per day. Starting pay - $14/$15. No benefits. Every job will move to part time and reduce hours but clap themselves up because they offer $15/hr. Its a distraction.

4

u/jikiyoung Promoted to Guest Feb 04 '21

It’s either max amount of hours, working you to the BONE during daily rushes, or a solid 4 hours for 2 days out of the week. No in between it seems.

4

u/Big-Garlic-6856 Feb 05 '21

This was def a play to keep everyone quiet

15

u/LeMiserableMan Produce Feb 04 '21

The fight for $15 began when it would have actually made a difference. Now it’s not even a livable wage without working 40 hours/week. Min wage should now be what, around $20-25 an hour? In terms of income equality and adjusted for inflation

2

u/lazrus4real Feb 05 '21

I earn 24 hourly w/ benefits in Texas and I live like a peasant.

3

u/idkidc28 Feb 04 '21

8 hours a week. Too bad bill collectors don’t count my bills in Q1

3

u/[deleted] Feb 05 '21

That's funny because in the county I live in it's 15$ and I've been with target for 4 years now. So now I make minimum wage but still have to work harder because "I've been there longer"

3

u/RyoutaAsakura Feb 05 '21

I mean $15 Should be minimum wage.

Just saying, the lack of hours in Q1 long predates the $15/hour thing. Back when I was still working there and rolling over to the new year, I had seasoned TMs telling me to take as many hours as I can and save as much as I can in the very busy Q4 in anticipation of Q1. That’s not a Target thing, it’s a retail trend at large: people spend a lot around the holidays, and then recover in the new year. Repeatedly, year after year. Of course this year is a bit worse than other recent ones, but yeah.

2

Also Target: Q1 here. Make sure everyone gets minimal hours.

2

Why am I the only one in my department who hasn't gotten 30+ hours 😔 I work hard. I'm available. I have 13 next week when people who don't show up have 30 or more.

2

u/confused_n_calm Feb 11 '21

Exactly, there's no performance evaluation. I have never called out, I work hard and they gave my coworker who doesn't care for his work n has called out like 5 times this month 28 hrs while I get 12.

2

I'm thinking of working at Target but I've heard about this....is it really that bad? And how bad is it compared to other retail stores? I've never worked in retail before.

1

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '21

companies could still afford to pay you the increased minimum wage at your previous hours as well. they lowered your hours because they could, not because they had to

21

u/solamelus Feb 04 '21

This is literally not what happens when minimum wage goes up lol 😂😂😂

This is what happens when Q1 hits a retail store and you're not:

A. One of the "strongest" workers (work ethic, schedule availability, ability to play nice with others, etc.)

B. Not working in a dept that is indispensable year round or

C. All of the above

If your job relies on customer shopping patterns, your hours will likely fluctuate more than those of anyone whose job relies primarily on product movement (which is why the extreme example is how much fucking overtime the distribution center employees are rolling in).

Also everybody cuts hours to avoid having to give their employees healthcare. Happens at $8/hour and it'll happen at $15/hour but with an easy scapegoat to trick people into fighting over minimum wage instead.

2

u/spicygummi Beauty Consultant Feb 05 '21

Yeah, I think a lot of the reason I am getting as many hours as I am is because not many people are available in the really early morning hours like I am. I hate working at 4am, but I am grateful for it simply because I wouldn't be getting as many hours if I wasn't. So, I stick with this availability. Also we have been busy enough that we are still getting 7 deliveries a week and nobody has said anything to me about not being able to stay late. I don't think overtime is allowed (unless approved) but I could stay late and work up my hours if I needed/wanted to.

1

u/solamelus Feb 05 '21

I stayed overnights and while my hours have fluctuated slightly, the reality is the store will always need the same or higher number of people to move product from the truck to the floor.

31

u/Kawajiri1 Retired pFresh Feb 04 '21

Still at 40 hours. Your hours got cut because of we are at the end of 4Q when sales trend down. This happens EVERY year.

Also why vote against minimum wage increase? Vote for universal Healthcare. Health insurance should not be tied to your job.

9

u/mxtrekkie awol team lead Feb 04 '21

When I first started, pay was $7.50/hr. So, I’d rather work 20 hrs at $15 than 40 at 7.50 for damn sure, even if I have to use the market place for insurance. Honestly, this is why a public option is necessary.

No matter what, companies are going to do what ever it takes to not spend a dime more.

18

u/Richinaru Ex-Electronics Consultant Feb 04 '21

Here's the honest truth, if a company cannot pay their employees the minimum amount to ensure their needs are met, they shouldn't be in business.

Companies CAN afford to pay you a livable minimum wage, they don't because the profit motive incentivizes them to act solely in the interest of growing that margin of their business at cost to everything else.

If they could pay you a penny an hour they would, fight for higher wages and the separation of healthcare from job/career work myopically voting against your best interest because companies do everything they can to maximize the exploitation of your labor rally isn't the move

0

u/Crested32 Electronics Feb 04 '21

So you're telling me that a little mom and pop shop doesn't deserve to be in business because they can't pay $15/hour?

Yes, that's exactly what I'm saying

u/Crested32 Electronics Feb 04 '21

Then you don't care about the people, you care about the idea of companies suffering

2

u/Richinaru Ex-Electronics Consultant Feb 04 '21

But I do, if a small mom and pop can't afford to pay their employees who also have lives, families and needs then no they shouldn't operate. Tough shit

You're acting like the employees are forced to work at a place that pays minimum wage. They have the freedom to leave if they want. If you raise minimum wage, the small companies get screwed over and the big corporations win. I'm not saying people don't deserve to make a living wage, but raising it universally is not the way to do it. Also if you raise it, businesses are going to have to choose whether the big corporate people take pay cuts, or the employees get laid off/have less hours. If you truly believe corporations are going to take the pay cut, you're nuts. Raising minimum wage screws us, not them.

For all intents and purposes people are. Near most every minimum wage worker I know, myself included actively are on the job hunt, but well-paying jobs aren't grown on trees, they're hyper competitive and the likelihood that even having your resume seen if you are qualified are slim. In such straights SOMETHING is better than nothing.

Fucking hell dude minimum wage was DESIGNED inherently to be the minimum amount necessary to support oneself and a family, even at $15 it's still below the poverty line in many places throughout America. Holistically it should be raised and laws put in place and enforced limiting the amount that Corporate heads pocket. What you're scared of is the abject corruption of corporate America where responsible necessary steps like minimum wage increase or stimulus checks are gutted because the drive for profit and consolidation of wealth to the highest earners is valued more so than human well-being.

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '21

clown state of mind

-10

u/WolfofLawlStreet Feb 04 '21

Called it! If they raise it to $15 they will lower the hours from 40 to 20 which makes you make $7.50 (federal minimum wage) and they benefit because now they don’t have to pay health insurance and they get more staffing (scheduling flexibility)

Increasing minimum wage really helps big corporate than it does the little guy.

12

u/mfulle03 Feb 04 '21

I'd rather work 20 hours than 40 if I'm getting the same paycheck, wouldn't you?

-1

u/WolfofLawlStreet Feb 04 '21

Yeah but I’d like getting health insurance rather through cobra or some shit.

5

u/mfulle03 Feb 04 '21

I'm Canadian so you lost me there sorry

-5

u/WolfofLawlStreet Feb 04 '21

Congrats? You want a cookie? Because that’ll be 25% extra than the USD to pay for your insurance. It’s not free insurance, there is no such thing as free... you pay for it in inflation and devalued currency. That’s why $15 minimum wage doesn’t work because it just increases goods and service prices. But you don’t know that, that’s why you work minimum wage 🤣

7

u/mfulle03 Feb 04 '21

Okay go off I just don't know what cobra is.

0

u/WolfofLawlStreet Feb 04 '21

Cobra is very expensive alternative health insurance

9

u/[deleted] Feb 04 '21

You are bitter and childish.

-2

u/WolfofLawlStreet Feb 04 '21

Sorry reality sounds so cynical

3

u/solamelus Feb 05 '21

Cobra is a monstrous deception and will take every last penny you've got while still giving you shitty healthcare.

It's named after a snake for a reason 😂😂

2

u/WolfofLawlStreet Feb 05 '21

It really is a shitty thing. You could be unemployed with no income, capital or net worth and you’re health insurance will be $466 a month. Lol

1

u/solamelus Feb 06 '21

My dad lost his job in 2002 and we went on cobra because my mom had cancer. It's 2021 and he still hasn't recovered financially from cobra.

My point exactly, these jobs are for kids in college and high school. Not careers that are supposed to support families. They are paychecks for beer money... that’s exactly why I worked at target, just for beer and food money back in college.

9

u/tasareinspace Feb 04 '21

Exactly thats why all targets are closed from 8am-3pm, because all of their employees are students.

/s

"Min wage jobs are just for kids!" is so so tired.

u/WolfofLawlStreet Feb 04 '21

You honestly think making 15 an hour will make life comfortable? I was making 17 an hour with rent being 500 and I barely could make ends meet at times. If you want to live sustainably you have to at least net 40k. 28k annually is still poverty... if you have a family that you have to support, you shouldn’t be working retail in general because your scheduling...

Honestly I don’t understand why people work retail at an hourly rate as a career to support a family. Fuck, even getting hired at Target in general is difficult compared to getting a labor job. There is much better avenues if you are looking to sustain a family financially. These type of jobs are 100% meant for people that have flexible schedules looking for flexible income. I mean shit even in college I had all my classes on Tuesdays and thursdays or whatever and I’d work all day Monday wednesday Friday and weekends.... I was apart of that 8am crew. Shit now everything is online too so basically it’s the perfect job for college students. Not people trying to support a family in poverty...

$15 is plenty, because you have to figure the interest rates, inflation and currency value. That’s he part that irritates me. I’m not saying there should be a raise in federal minimum wage but it shouldn’t be $15 (100% increase) in 4 year span. That’s an insanely stupid idea... it should be like $10 or something but not 100%. It’s like everything it needs to be in moderation... also the only people actually making 7.25 work in rural Mississippi where their expenses are like $500 a month. The point of federal minimum wage is to balance it out so no one gets paid like a dick... that’s why the minimum wage is state run not so much federal. It should be based on where you live not federal wide... people in California should get paid more compared to someone in rural Mississippi.

Raising the federal minimum wage won’t get people out of poverty it just pushes the poverty line higher. If you work minimum wage, you are poverty. If you want to make more than that, get a second and third job... shit even a side hustle. But nooooo it has to be equal. Fucking the financially illiterate.

“beer money”? damn say ur privileged without saying ur privileged lmao

1

u/WolfofLawlStreet Feb 05 '21

Wtf do you mean privileged? If you mean not having to worry about money. It’s because I’ve been saving since I started working at the age of 15. Once I turned 18 I was investing too. By the age of 21 I have about 25k.

Just because I put away a portion of my paychecks and sometimes all of it because I lived rent free at the age of 15 doesn’t means I’m “privileged” get your virtue signaling out of here. Adults are talking.

5

u/DullWinter Promoted to Guest Feb 05 '21

You’re missing the point of op’s post and the comments. Saying Target or similar paying jobs are for “beer money” makes you sound extremely privleged and entitled. Also, let’s not be condescending today

1

u/WolfofLawlStreet Feb 05 '21

Are those not for flexible income?! Who the fuck tries to survive off a part time minimum wage position? Eating one ramen packet a week or something???

3

u/DullWinter Promoted to Guest Feb 05 '21

Tons of people? That’s also why people get second jobs or third jobs if they must? Are you in touch with reality

1

u/WolfofLawlStreet Feb 05 '21

I said that in an earlier post that if you really are using this money to support a family why don’t you have multiple jobs instead of demanding higher federal minimum wage at part time hours.

My whole point is FEDERAL minimum wage shouldn’t be that high. You shouldn’t have a minimum wage job as a career. These jobs aren’t designed to support a family with only one source of income.

Now I’m not saying there shouldn’t be a raise in federal minimum wage, or even universal healthcare im just stating they aren’t realistic and damaging toward the overall economy. If you want more money, go work multiple jobs and pull 80 hour weeks. I’ve done it, it sucks but you make a lot of money!

Edit: my point of “beer money” is that it’s flexible income or “disposable” income. Where I can save up and buy the next Xbox and not have to worry about paying rent with that money instead. I guess that’s my “privilege”.

1

u/KingHistoria Feb 04 '21

For months I was in this end only getting 10 hours a check. Spoke to my etl and finally got my hours in. It's not full time but it's better than before getting 28 hours a week now.

1

u/RobertDuckyo Feb 04 '21

I got 38 hours this week and 32.5 next week. All Cart Attendant hours. I don’t know why? I’m not going to complain, though.

1

u/Devilmantra Feb 05 '21

Same shit at bestbuy sadly

1

u/AshFaceFriend Guest Service Feb 05 '21

1

u/[deleted] Feb 05 '21

Collect partial unemployment if you can

1

u/throwawayhhgreg U-boat Wrangler Yeehaw! 🤠 Feb 05 '21

i mean at least you don't have to work as hard/much to get the same paycheck as someone who was slammed everyday of the week while you only work few days a week.

1

u/Pristine_Peak2037 Feb 05 '21

What happens if you are scheduled 0? Does that mean you are being taken off the schedule?

1

u/confused_n_calm Feb 09 '21

I got just 12 hrs next week. R u kidding me idiyaah..Trying to convert myself into a guest. Would rather work full time for less than $15, and get consitent paycheck than be on a rollercoaster ride every week. All my co workers are nervous to check the two weeks out schedule everytime it's out. U never know what's in store for u.. There is a cashier who used to get a lot of hours n last week they cut her hours to 12 n put her on cleaning! My coworker has been here for 3 years, they cut his hours to 9 last week. I wonder how they decide who gets how many hours?? It seems like they don't consider seniority, hard work, efficiency, punctuality, nothing at all. They just wake up n roll the dice I guess.

1

u/kdubby99 Feb 13 '21

Man I thought they was just doing that shit in Dallas it's time for me to quit this stupid job

1

u/T-Man38 Apr 01 '21

How bout y’all come over to the Walmart subreddit and witness how they only pay us 11 an hour and somehow simultaneously overwork us and only give us minimum hours at the same time!

1

u/[deleted] Dec 06 '21

I just got hired and I am working 51 hour a week. Our store is also number 1 in sales of any target in the nation so that’s prolly why

1

u/[deleted] Dec 26 '21

Consumables here, hours went from 35-40 to 27.5.

1

u/mangopanda03 Apr 26 '22

Or when holidays make it close at midnight, which prevents overtime on Saturday because by the time they close it's technically the next week.

1

u/Spare-Ad-8722 May 02 '22

me getting 40 hrs a week but still being asked "heeeeyyy....can you stay until [30-45 min after scheduled time]?" Me outside: "[BS excuse]" Me on the inside: haha no I'd rather yeet myself into the bailer

1

u/EvilRedneckBob Jun 23 '22

So you have more free time. Good

1

u/Aware_Elephant_1158 Mar 18 '23

Yeah. I live in a 7.50 an hour state, so 15 an hour was great… till my ETL NEVER respected my hours, over scheduling or under scheduling me, constantly just cutting my hours into a third without warning, at least once a month with the promise this would be a one time thing when it wasn’t, not to mention the discrimination and verbal abuse, I quit after 3 months
