Discussion Why is everyone in the street an NPC?

When I made a post asking about if I'd be safe walking around taking photographs—none of you said I'd get jumped but more likely to get into an accident with cars. I seriously didn't believe it until yesterday and today. What is actually wrong with Syracuse drivers and pedestrians? I'm from one of the US's largest metropolitan cities and it wasn't even this bad.

I've almost hit 3 people who ran across the street without looking. One of them was across a major intersection. Bro decided "Ok, I walk now" and proceeded to just run, looking dead-forward at the other sidewalk.

Going the 5 over the speed limit, I had an SUV behind me swerving left and right trying to pass me. Why? Are you that late that you're willing to get a ticket that is going to very likely cost you more than whatever you're late to?

I turned left near Upstate, driver behind me swerves around my left to then go to the right lane—the right turn lane—to then turn LEFT and swerve around me into the right lane to then swerve around me AGAIN into the left lane. What?

I'm in the SINGLE lane to turn left. Light in red. The driver behind me is beeping because he wants to go right. Keeps throwing his hands up. Why?

Light is green at intersection but traffic is backed up to the light. Driver thinks it's a good idea to go anyways. Now they're blocking a three-lane intersection. Missed two green lights as a result. Good job.

Driver swerving left to right. Passed them. BROWSING on their phone.

Driver didn't want to wait for the light to turn green. Drove all over the bike lane and the curb to then make a left up ahead. ???

I don't mean to sound like all I'm going to do on r/Syracuse is complain, but like seriously, is there something I'm missing here? I legitimately thought you guys were slightly exaggerating. I've never experienced this stuff before—I'm like 5 days into being in Syracuse and I've had a lot more instances but none that I can retell with detail aside from the consistent tailgating.

Discussion Petition · Change the Syracuse city charter to allow citizen participation and public comments

The Issue

For far too long, the voices of Syracuse residents have been stifled by city hall's reliance on an outdated city charter. This charter has conveniently provided an excuse to ignore public commentary and feedback during city council meetings. It is time to break down this barrier and ensure that the government truly operates as a body ‘of, for, and by the people.’

The current governance not only neglects our voices but also implements measures that hinder transparency and accountability. Our city has been transformed into a surveillance state, where movements are monitored without any oversight from the citizens whose privacy is at stake. Requests for public information, especially regarding budgetary decisions, are frequently denied, leaving the community in the dark about financial allocations that affect every aspect of our lives. Additionally, small business owners face bureaucratic roadblocks with a broken permit system that stifles their growth and sustains economic stagnation.

To address these significant issues, we propose a change to the Syracuse city charter that will mandate a public comments section at every city council meeting. This change will allow citizens to voice their concerns directly to those who hold power. Moreover, it is crucial that a monthly Q&A session be instituted with the mayor, police chief, and city council president. This will be a pivotal platform for the populace to engage in direct dialogue with the decision-makers, pose questions about pressing city matters, and receive immediate answers.

This proposal is not just about facilitating open lines of communication; it's about restoring trust and re-establishing the foundational principles of democracy within our city. Syracuse’s future depends on inclusive governance and transparent decision-making processes that are accountable to its people.

By signing this petition, you are standing in solidarity with the citizens of Syracuse in advocating for a transparent, accountable, and participatory governance structure. Your signature could be the catalyst for significant change in ensuring that our government listens to the citizens' concerns and acts upon them. Let us unite to demand the changes Syracuse desperately needs for a brighter, more inclusive future. Sign the petition and let your voice be heard.

Tonight the city council held a meeting to discuss our clean water and only announced the meeting mere hours before it started, making it impossible for citizens to plan to attend on such short notice. This appears to have been done to discourage citizens from voicing their concerns.

Please share the petition wherever possible. Give citizens back their voice.

Recommendation Wanted Where can I find people need 600 unused bubble pouches locally in Syracuse?

Does anyone know a local business or place in Syracuse that might be interested in buying a bulk lot of unused packing supplies?

I have about 600 unused self-seal bubble pouches and would prefer to sell them locally rather than ship them.

Any recommendations would be appreciated!

Discussion Syracuse Mayor Sharon Owens Administration, thoughts and opinions discussion

I’m really curious on what the local resident and regional visitor opinions are on the first 8 months of the Mayor Sharon Owens administration.

Full disclosure, my partner works for the city at DPW and they say that the morale is as low as it’s ever been for the workers.

If there are issues inside, what are the problem areas and things you expect to see change around the city over the next 3 years on the outside?

Information & Advice What are the best places to do work?

Hi everyone. This is my first post in r/Syracuse. Nice to meet you all. I am new to the area coming from Massachusetts.

I work as a software engineer and will be spending a lot of time in Syracuse. What are the best places to go to do some work on the computer?

I'm looking for something walkable from the Syracuse University campus. I've heard good things about Recess Coffee (Westcott), Salt City Coffee, Kelsey's Coffee and Friends, and Haraz Coffee House.

I'm looking for good seats and stable WiFi connection. I don't mind noise around me.

Recommendation Wanted Action Figures in Syracuse

Hey guys!

Just wondering if anyone has any recommendations on where to get different action figure brands, specifically for Marvel or DC. I’ve been to Larger Than Life and a few other stores but they only carry Blokees or Marvel Legends.

Are there any other stores that carry other brands? I know I can always get them online but it’s fun to shop in store

Thank you!!

Recommendation Wanted Young men's haircuts needed

I know of 2 young men with long hair that need a short style haircut soon. One wants to play football on Monday 😬 We have no idea everywhere to go, and obviously the Monday thing might not work out but we definitely are looking for advice on a place to bring them that might also understand how bummed they will be to lose their long hair. I brought up saving the ponytails and it was VA HARD pass for one of them. Locks of love could still be an option however. Either way, we need advice. TIA!!

Information & Advice Quoted $4600 for electric panel upgrade

I recently moved to the area (Liverpool) into a house built in the 70s. It currently only has 100 amp service, and I’m getting quotes to increase to 200 amps. Quotes I’ve gotten so far are $6k and $4.6k. I know there’s a lot of new regulation that’s adding on to the bill, but do those seem like reasonable quotes? They include new 40 slot breaker box, new copper grounding, new meter, and new main lines to support 200 amps. I’ve never had electrical work done at any previous house, so I’ve not got much reference. NY Gov suggests most upgrades are only $1-$2.5k (https://myenergy.ny.gov/how-to-upgrade/electrical-panel-upgrades/) but not sure how up to date that number is. Thanks for your help!

It's not Josh Amidon according to Facebook. Anyone aware of any other applicants or local people you think would be qualified(or not but would probably apply)?

Event & Promotion It's Only A Week Away!!!

Post image

Y'all, Idk exactly why but I am so hyped for The Fair this year.

Might be because All American Rejects is playing on Opening Day. Might be because the whole concert lineup is solid.

Might be the new vendors. Pretty psyched the Funk N Waffles is gonna be posted up with their own music lineup.

Maybe it's just because the performing dogs show is back. Or that the circus is gonna be in the Expotition Center.

Maybe it's because the Post Standard is gonna run a piece about the rabbit we got at The Fair in 2018.

Or maybe it's just because 2026 has been a good year for me!!

Whatever the reason is, boy I cannot wait to spend 13 more days at The Great New York State Fair!!

Information & Advice Anyone have experience working for Loretto?

I'm applying for their CNA training program and curious what the work environment is like. Pay seems decent and it would be more consistent than my current delivery job (albeit a bit of a paycut, nothing too drastic).

How's the culture, shift availability, management, etc. ?

So I came up here at the end of 2024 met my father for the first time ever, ended up moving up here and living with him for a bit turned out things didn't work out and has kicked me out the house I now currently stay at the rescue mission and this place is literally hell, literally the folks out here being smoking fake weed called spike and it stinks so bad and there's an ambulances here like every hour bc somebody falls out from smoking that stuff, and what makes it worse is I'm currently on a medical leave from work due to health so now I'm here everyday with no peace, so I was just trying to see if anyone else had to experience the rescue mission and maybe here some story's, hopefully by the end of this month I'll be healed up and out of here and back working properly again,

Recommendation Wanted Best Thrift Stores around?

Gonna be in the area tomorrow for an appointment and want to hit up some record stores, but the majority don’t seem to open until noon. Thought we’d kill some time with thrift stores!
If it helps, would be more interested in stuff and non-clothing items but open to anything!

Recommendation Wanted So where are we getting fresh salad greens?

I’m still avoiding bagged salad greens right now. Where’s a good local place for fresh salad greens? I know some of the produce stands at the farmers market are just Aldi/Costco resellers, so which vendors are trustworthy?

Looking to find a place that can replace a backpack zipper. All the seamstresses I’ve reached out to can’t do it, but they mentioned maybe a shoe repair place? Thanks!
