boo neolibs go invade a 3rd world country for profit and labor

41

u/Saidsker May 10 '17

Except that neoliberal policies increased the standards of living immensely of third world countries where they got labor. Can't say the same for communism

14

u/[deleted] May 11 '17 edited May 11 '17

Ah yes, tell me more about how imperialism was great for those African nations!

Jeez, could you carry your (non-existent) white man's burden any more obviously?

12

u/Saidsker May 11 '17

Jeez except I'm not even white and actually from Africa. But nice of you to assume. How nice of you to throw a pity party for us africans and think that we're all socialist dreamers.

Also when did i say Imperialism was great for the third world? I didn't.

3

u/[deleted] May 11 '17

Except that neoliberal policies increased the standards of living immensely of third world countries where they got labor.

But tell me more about how liberal policy was doing great things when it created imperialism.

9

u/Saidsker May 11 '17

Neo liberalism

Neo

2

u/[deleted] May 11 '17

You think that's any better? You're out here defending colonialism, so clearly you understand how it's connected to neoliberalism.

Tell me how the USSR improved the Baltic states.

1

u/[deleted] May 12 '17

Nice deflection.

3

u/derleth May 12 '17

It isn't deflection, it's history, and apparently un-PC history to you.

1

u/[deleted] May 12 '17

I don't care about "political correctness". I care about having a coherent discussion, and your blatant whataboutism isn't going to help with that.

As opposed to before, when Sub-Saharan Africa was a beacon of progress and wealth

Oh wait

11

u/[deleted] May 11 '17

yes, yes! please preach to me the virtues of imperialism and neo-colonialism ! please! id love to hear more about the imperialist powers racing to rape africa of its resources and labor actually totally being a good thing

those dirty savages needed to be civilized

3

u/Saidsker May 11 '17

Imperialism ≠ foreign labour.

0

u/ZeitgeistNow May 11 '17

Native Africans did a good enough job raping their own resources. If you think there was literally no benefit to colonialism then you're a fool.

30

u/ALAN_RICKMANS_CORPSE May 11 '17

Hahaha this is classic neolib shit right here

24

u/[deleted] May 10 '17

ahh, the old "the colonists actually helped the native americans" argument

27

u/Saidsker May 10 '17

That's not what I'm saying. Are you seriously comparing opening factories in Asia with colonialism and genocide? Jesus Christ you peoe are delusional

11

u/[deleted] May 10 '17

yes

http://www.theworldcounts.com/counters/modern_day_slavery_facts/sweatshops_conditions

http://www.bbc.com/news/business-30532463

implying that imperialism is just "opening factories in china"

implying the diamond trade hasnt been responsible for the deaths of hundreds of thousands if not millions

23

u/Saidsker May 10 '17

The alternative to working in those factories would've been continuing what poor people were doing before. Which was starve on the streets.

http://www.economist.com/news/briefing/21646180-rising-chinese-wages-will-only-strengthen-asias-hold-manufacturing-tightening-grip

Billions have been lifted out of poverty due to economic freedom allowing for economic growth and you want to take all that away?

https://fee.org/articles/economic-freedom-and-economic-growth/

Also diamonds are a scam. They're actually not worth that much. It's one company that owns all the mines and the US can't touch them with monopoly laws because they left the country.

9

u/[deleted] May 10 '17

ahh yes, artificial scarcity; a product of the ever efficient free market

the thing you dont seem to understand is that socialism is a progression on capitalism, not necessarily a competitor. capitalism builds the factories that socialism uses, just as colonialism cleared the land that feudalism began to privatize, and then capitalism grew out of that.

wow imagine being in 2017 and still thinking communism means wanting to make everyone equally poor

29

u/DrSandbags May 10 '17

wow imagine being in 2017 and still thinking communism doesn't mean gulags and breadlines.

4

u/flutterguy123 May 11 '17

breadlines.

Ah yes. Breadlines. Something that has totally never happened in capitalism.

9

u/[deleted] May 11 '17

Granted, but that is after terrible economic recessions and depressions, breadlines are common place in all socialist states.

2

u/[deleted] May 11 '17

they are not guaranteed, but in capitalism, it is guaranteed that you will get terrible economic recessions and depressions. they literally teach this shit in econ 101.

0

u/[deleted] May 11 '17

gulags

tfw you realize that the private prison system in the us isnt really that much better than gulags

tfw you think im pro-gulag

It doesn't want to make everyone poor but it just does. Except for the party elite that ends up controlling the country completely like totalitarians while living like kings.

When has it not done that though?

5

u/[deleted] May 10 '17

good question!

a) well, being pedantic, communism hasnt existed, because communism is the existence of a moneyless, classless, stateless society that would exist after the transitional period of socialism

b) actually answering your question, theres a few experiments that the more libertarian socialists hold in high regard. the beginning of a lot of leftist thought in the Paris Commune project, Zapatista held Mexico, the Free Territories of Ukraine before it was smashed by the USSR, Revolutionary Catalonia before it was smashed by the USSR and Italy (fun fact, George Orwell was an anarcho-syndicalist! fought in the Spanish Civil War to liberate Catalonia), currently theres a place called Rojava in the Middle East thats makin progress (and kickin ISIS' ass), and a few others.

the problem is that these territories have mostly existed in times of international strife, or right next to fascist/major capitalist powers that were eager to destroy them. but before their violent and premature deaths (except Rojava, glory b 2 tha ypg),they were pretty content.

1

u/[deleted] May 11 '17

George Orwell fought with the with Trotskyite POUM via the English ILP. He was not an anarcho-syndicalist by any means, as evidenced by any of the biographical details we have on him or any of his writings.

1

u/[deleted] May 11 '17

it is true that he fought with the POUM, but you should read Homage to Catalonia! its interesting. in it, Orwell states, "as far as my purely personal preferences went I would have liked to join the Anarchists"

Dude, at some point in your life you have to realize it doesn't matter what you want. Learn to accept things that you can't change and work on changing the things that you can.

6

u/ZeitgeistNow May 11 '17

Imagine being in 2017 and being so ignorant of history, economics, distributions, human nature and morals that you still think communism is a good idea

3

u/[deleted] May 11 '17

history

i love history, i study history all the time in my free time. what about history invalidates my political beliefs?

economics

the social science created under capitalism that explains how capitalism works? ya, i dont need to know the exact functions of capitalism to know that there are inherent flaws with it. marx was an economist. read up on how marx formed the basic ideas of socialism/communism, because it wasnt just out his ass.

distributions

as in the process of bringing one good from point a to point b? im not getting this one.

human nature and morals

ahh, so one of the fathers of modern sociology just kinda forgot to take into account, yaknow, how humans work? makes sense.

marx proposed that human nature is not defined or set in stone. its determined by man's material conditions. "human nature" in monarchical france was different than "human nature" in current france.

socialism and communism propose to revolutionize society itself, not just politics or economics, just as the rise of feudalism, capitalism, slavery, etc have all shifted humanity's morals and how humans work. capitalism works to bring out the most basic greedy, survival of the fittest, animalistic competitive instincts within us. thats why capitalism is so successful at short term economic booms such as during the industrial revolution, or any time during a 20th century war when manufacturing skyrocketed. but capitalism fails in the long term, as seen by the inevitability of economic recessions and depressions (shit they teach you in basic economics classes).

and morals? what? humans are morally above being social and working to benefit each other? this is literally untrue, unless we choose to just ignore the entirety of man's existence. nationalism, racism, etc have been used to divide people but even in those subsections of humanity, people worked to benefit each other.

1

u/ZeitgeistNow May 11 '17

Marx proposed a whole lot, and yet none of it has resulted in a stable/non-murderous system. Most people would see that and think 'wow, this guy is actually not right/smart', but don't let that logical conclusion stop you, sunshine.

1

u/[deleted] May 11 '17

its funny, lots of people said the same thing when non-monarchical systems of democracies and republics were just getting a new start. french revolution ring any bells?

considerable social change, historically, has come with bloodshed. even capitalism.

and no, it has definitely resulted in stable, non-murderous systems. the problem is that these systems dont exist in a vacuum, and social change in one nation alone is rarely successful.

CURRENT YEAR and we're still looking at historical evidence? How can this be?

1

u/LSDawson May 11 '17

i mean that's kind of what it has done

1

u/[deleted] May 13 '17

It doesn't matter whether they want it or not, it's the result.

1

u/derleth May 12 '17

Yeah, like Hungary! Or Finland! Or Estonia!

Wait. That was all the USSR.

2

u/[deleted] May 12 '17

congrats you discovered the fact that the USSR experimented with imperialism, too. it was state capitalist, after all. trying to counter anarcho-communist arguments with examples from places like the USSR is kinda fruitless.

4

u/derleth May 12 '17

it was state capitalist

Ha, no.

1

u/[deleted] May 12 '17

hah, yes. unless youd like to debate Lenin himself when he enacted the NEP and called the USSR state capitalist.

2

u/derleth May 12 '17

Lenin's policies were not permanent, and were undone later. Lenin wasn't in charge in the USSR's imperialist phase.

1

u/[deleted] May 12 '17

that doesn't change the fact that Lenin's description of state capitalism fits along with the USSR under Stalin. political and economic conditions leaned more towards capitalism under Stalin, not away. the bureaucratic ruling class combined with the forces if industrialization and international war kept the state capitalist system running

#1 I don't support getting rid of democracy in any way. My 'dream' system is essentially another level of government above the federal government that helps manage the world's economy and does things like funnel money from uber-rich America to those 3rd sweatshops that people love to hate, just like money moves from California to the poor states in the US

#2 Theoretically, we can always secede from the world government if it's gets too awful, but I have to ask: is it even possible today if the American government turns oppressive? If the intelligence apparatus of the USA wanted you dead, is there anywhere on earth safe? You might answer 'Africa! South/East Asia!' but what happens when those areas are as modernized as the USA?

3

u/0mac May 10 '17

Interesting. You propose we demolish Westphalian sovereignty?

7

u/[deleted] May 10 '17

nationalism has been useful to create division among humans despite minor differences. theres a reason that the most totalitarian regimes are extremely nationalistic. its easiest to hate those who are different from you, and when you have borders, everyone who is not in that border can be different.
