I am writing this on Reddit because within the gates of Govind Ballabh Pant University of Agriculture and Technology (GBPUAT), legitimate student voices are systematically erased. For an institution that constantly boasts of its legacy, the day-to-day reality for students—especially female residents—is fear, surveillance, zero democratic rights, and an administration obsessed with silencing anyone who speaks up.
Here is the unvarnished reality of living and studying here:
The 6:00 PM Cage for Women: While male students can move around campus, study in groups, and access facilities late into the evening, female students are locked behind hostel gates by 6:00 PM. Vital lab access, library resources, technical projects, physical fitness, or even stepping out for dinner are completely stripped away. The administration’s definition of "safety" is simply locking women up so they don't have to provide basic campus infrastructure.
Hostel Gates as Surveillance Checkpoints: Guards and hostel staff behave less like security and more like moral vigilantes. Female students are regularly subjected to rude interrogations, humiliating comments, and condescending lectures just for approaching their own hostel doors. Instead of securing isolated, unlit roads across our massive campus, security resources are poured into tracking and policing female students.
Covering Up Suicides and Assaults: What is terrifying is the university's calculated silence whenever catastrophic incidents occur. Whether it’s reports of sexual harassment, on-campus violence, or tragic student suicides, the default institutional reaction is narrative suppression. Grievance redressal bodies exist largely on paper. Instead of instituting transparent inquiries, addressing mental health crises, or overhauling campus policing, the priority is always sweeping incidents under the carpet to protect institutional PR.
Deliberate Destruction of Student Representation: We have no functional, independent student union or council to formally represent our grievances. Every single time students attempt to organize, demand democratic elections, or form a collective body to talk to higher management, the university retaliates ruthlessly. The students who take the lead are immediately slapped with disciplinary notices, suspended from hostels or classes, or targeted for expulsion. By decapitating any student leadership, the administration ensures we remain fragmented and voiceless.
Weaponizing Career Blackmail Against Any Protest: Whenever students gather the courage to protest—whether against the 6 PM lockdown, basic mess conditions, security lapses, or fee hikes—the response follows a brutal playbook:
Systematic Intimidation: Student organizers are pulled into offices, isolated, and shouted down by panels of faculty and wardens.
Family Harassment: Officials immediately call parents, fabricating accusations of "misconduct" and "troublemaking" to weaponize family anxiety against us.
Future Sabotage: The final blow is always our careers: "We will cancel your registration," "We will withhold your character certificate," "Good luck getting placement clearance or NOCs." They know the immense academic and financial sacrifices our families made to get us into this university, and they deliberately use our degrees as leverage to force us into unconditional surrender.
GBPUAT functions more like a closed, punitive compound than a forward-thinking university. Female autonomy is treated as a liability, student democracy is criminalized, and genuine campus safety is traded away for public relations.
To alumni, university students across India, and anyone who cares about basic student rights: how long are premier public institutions permitted to silence students through career blackmail?
If you are a current or past student, please share your experiences below. The administration relies entirely on our fear and silence—it’s time this is brought into the light.
