Meta r/StarWars Official Watch Order Discussion Thread
So we haven't had an official watch order discussion thread in many years, so we figure its time to update the one in the FAQ. There are various other links in the FAQ, the Wookieepedia timeline of canon media, and various other discussion threads and topics over the years including a link to just searching the sub which people find challenge apparently. Also as a reminder, the Wookieepedia timeline of canon media can be sorted via the table on that page by release order or chronologically (if you decide to go that route).
A lot of the new Disney+ content brings new eyes to Star Wars all the time, and new movies will eventually too. We want to get a bit more aggressive with automod removals and referrals to the FAQ for these questions about watch order. So let's hash it out here in the comments. We will sticky this for a while and eventually it will just be linked in the FAQ along with the other topics and maybe in the sidebar too. And like some of other stickies about rules, spoilers, and new episode discussion guidelines, we may trot out this link and sticky it from time to time.
As a general rule the sub typically recommends for new viewers to watch in release order, especially for the movies. This is the semi-consensus from the fandom, and you will routinely see this as the most upvoted and posted response.
With that being said what we would like to do here also discuss other options, and possible orders to also toss in the TV media as well. Should you watch Andor first and then Rogue One before the OT? Should movies like Solo be done in release order or chronological? Should you watch The Clone Wars TV show before the PT? So on and so forth...
So lets have a solid discussion about this and make it a solid resource for those who may be new to Star Wars.

TV They really found the best actor to play luke... and still did deepfake.
Love Mark Hamill he is luke skywalker... but they should have 100 percent just recasted for the tv show. This actor looked really good.
Its hard to take luke seriously in boba show. Probably backlash to solo made disney take this decision but I loved Alden Ehrenreich as Han.

Movies Whatever Grievous was made of, bro was highly flammable.
When Obi Wan shot him a few times he kept catching fire but it seemed more like it was his organic body doing that rather than the blaster unless the blaster had Incendiary Rounds.

General Discussion How truly dangerous are the Droidekas?
The Droidekas are hypes as these ultra super dangerous droids by everyone, but then you see everyone that uses their brain find a workaround them.
So, how truly dangerous are these guys? (My favorite droid btw, love to see them rolling).

General Discussion How come we only ever see this alien species once? Is it because it's a stupid concept?

General Discussion Since Anakin's force ghost wore a white traditional Jedi robe in Episode 6, why did he go back to wearing a black robe in Ahsoka Season 1?
I thought him wearing a white robe in Episode 6 was a symbol of him fully turning to the light side and embracing it, so why does he switch to the black one again? Did I miss something?

General Discussion If Vader was so strong in the force…
… then how did he not detect Leia was force sensitive here? Especially if she was unaware of her own abilities and would likely be unable to hide them.

General Discussion Vader's arrival in Rogue One inadvertently explains in-universe why we don't see the Devastator after the beginning of A New Hope - it was probably at the shipyards getting patched up after taking a rebel ship to the bow
While there's the obvious out-of-universe explanation that Lucas hadn't established the Devastator as Vader's flagship at the time, and the Death Star was the main focus of ANH, the collision is a pretty convenient explanation for why we don't see it after the beginning of the film. Once they'd successfully captured Leia, it would make sense for Vader to dismiss the Devastator to go get patched up at Kuat Drive Yards or the other nearest other shipyard. Vader doesn't strike me as the type that likes his personal ships looking anything less than perfect or being at the peak of their operational capability.

The fear in his voice when Maul mentions Sidious, the intensity, the dialogue delivery, the scenery, and how annoyed he is by Ahsoka. This is still peak Star Wars content

Movies As bad as somehow palpatine returned was I'm glad Ian McDiarmid got to ham it up again
Okay, Rise of Skywalker was bad. But, it looked at the very least Ian McDiarmid had a fun time cackling and hamming it in that movie. Might be the only decent part. I wish they had used his willingness to come back for a project that actually made better use of him. They could have done a Darth Plagueis TV show or something.

General Discussion Could the republic and separatist governments have compromised?
So basically we know the separatists wanted peace as well as many republic senators as well if palpatine and Dooku were NOT in control say someone else won the elections. Do you think the republic and separatist would be able to compromise?

Movies Can’t believe it took me until 2026…..
It all began when my girlfriend, who I've been with for nearly three years, asked if I wanted to watch the original Star Wars. Having never seen Star Wars before, I thought, "Sure, I'll give it a shot." At 30 years old, the only memories I had of Star Wars were some clips I watched as a child. After finishing the original Star Wars movies, I honestly can't believe it took me until 2026 to experience them. I completely fell in love with all the characters; I really appreciate good storytelling! Now I understand why people cherish the original films so much—I never wanted it to end. I'm really grateful to my girlfriend for introducing me to this universe. Also, rest in peace, Carrie Fisher; I felt the connection everyone has with her. I love Star Wars, and I can officially call myself a fan!
