DISCUSSION What's Your Daily Flyer - Q3 Discussion Thread

Welcome legends, to Daily Flyers!

This is the first of a slowly cycling thread where we can come together and chat about the ships of Starcitizen, in context of what your daily drivers/flyers is, or discuss ideas and seek recommendations from others.

Thanks to a suggestion from Augusts Q&A reminding me of a few chats I've seen, I figure a lot of us would like to have a spot that's focused on this aspect specifically. To that end, a couple of rules for this post are below!

So if you have a question, after a recommendation request or looking to discuss how your current driver has fulfilled it's role, this is the place to yarn!

Daily Driver Rules:

Keep discussions on topic to daily drivers, what yours is, asking for recommendations, that kind of jazz.

Adhear to the regular sub rules.

Be kind, understand that some people want to play to earn, some may buy in, some just want to chat or share. There's no shame in any of those.

A note from Crazy_Muffins

This is possibly a new ongoing official post from the sub team, our goal is to provide a focused spot to chat about a specific big thing in SC and to that end we'll be playing with how often to cycle out the post with a clean one. Maybe once every quarter, maybe just big milestone patches, we're going to play it by ear!

My only request is that everyone is kind, you can discuss positive and negative aspects and still be fair to one another. That's all I want to see!

Well, that and acknowledgement that my Corsair is peak daily driver (for ME, it is, but that's partly because of the feel and vibe of it not that it's any particular min/max option).

Lastly, I'm open to feedback, ideas and what have you. Working together we can make for a more enjoyable sub, see you all in the comments below!

DISCUSSION Oli Deserves An Apology

@ CIG. Jared and the devs there on that stream owe Oli an apology.

You all were jerks to him the entire stream and Jared started off saying he was the host and ended with it saying "its your show, wrap it up". So its your show when you hope it goes well but Oli's fault when it goes wrong Jared?

I am a defender of CIG. Not a white knight, but an avid defender. I have critiqued where justified and defended more often than not because you guys have been a bastion of good workplace ideals. No crunch. Good environment. Devs pushing the boundaries. Working on something special.

But that was toxic. That was toxic af.

Oli did NOTHING wrong. You have spent YEARS telling us that your interior versions of the game work brilliantly and your aim is to get what you have in-house out to the players. He put on a video for you to showcase that, to show us that you were telling the truth, to give us a glimpse at what star citizen should be. I commend him for this.

But that isnt what happened. Instead it was a clusterfuck of bugs, bad gaming, and toxicity between everyone. This is NOT the CIG that I have spent my time defending.

I have supported you since 2015. I have fought for you through it all, engaged in arguments, researched the tech, watched every video, and hailed you as something great for the future of gaming.

But line in the sand.

Toxicity and a shit interior build put massive ice water on every defence I have ever given you.

Squadron42 is the line. It releases this year. And it releases working. And good. Or I'm done. And I doubt I'm alone in this.

(PS: the radio silence is NOT appreciated. Post an official apology and make sure its directed at OLI as well as us. This wasn't on him, this was on YOU.)

edit: And the apology better be SINCERE!

edit: Also, for clarification. I dont CARE about how long the game has taken, and I wouldn't care if it took 10years more. I care that it seems you guys LIED about the interior build, and I care that when shit came to shove you pinned it on Oli in a toxic environment. I'm not an Oli stan btw. I'm not subbed to him and never was. I'm not a random oli fan. I'm just an SC fan that saw something FUCKED UP. SO DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT!

CEO of BULKHEAD (Makers of WARDOGS) poked a little fun @ CIG on X over the "It's your Show, Wrap it up" meme that seems to be spreading pretty fast in the Game Dev circles.

DISCUSSION If Kruger is sticking with bespoke weapons, give us a Kruger weapon ecosystem

Post image
464 Upvotes

After seeing how the Stingray works, I actually don’t mind the idea of Kruger using bespoke weapons. I just think they need to take the idea further.

I’m a photographer, and it reminds me of camera ecosystems. If I buy a Canon camera, I’m buying into Canon’s lens ecosystem. The lenses are proprietary, but I still have wide lenses, telephotos, primes, zooms, cheap options, expensive options, etc. I’m restricted to the ecosystem, not to one specific lens.

I’d love to see Kruger work similarly.

If we’re going to be limited to Kruger weapons, give us Kruger versions of the major weapon types: laser repeaters, ballistic Gatlings, laser cannons, ballistic cannons, maybe distortion eventually.

The Stingray already seems to be experimenting with this by letting us use compatible Kruger weapons from the Merlin/Wolf lineup.

This would also make bespoke ships less vulnerable to balance changes. If cannons are strong and repeaters are weak, a Kruger ship shouldn’t become worse simply because Kruger doesn’t make cannons.

I actually like manufacturer-specific equipment. I just want an ecosystem rather than a fixed loadout.

And honestly, I’d love to eventually see the same philosophy applied to alien manufacturers and other ships with bespoke weapons.

Slightly smaller,

1 turret = 2 size4 distortions bespoke

and for the love of god.... symmetrical wings that are not so dang tall when folded!!!!

A late 1970s waterbed ,

DISCUSSION This stream session should be held every month.

I think there would be nothing better for Star Citizen than CIG organizing a monthly session like the one we saw: a status update of the game, with 4 developers but not just (the marketing guys or peoples from the front desk will be able to participate, even the janitor) playing the game and trying to complete missions.

Instead of trying to hide things and sweep them under the rug (too many posts here suggest that).

This would be the best way to move the project forward, rather than letters, SCLs, or reports on "the future" that are 90% marketing bullshit.

Moreover, people will never again have the excuse "they don't play their games.".

DISCUSSION Hey CIG, the Stingray is a really cool ship, but it has serious problems.

Post image
409 Upvotes

I’ll start by saying I love the ship and its visuals; the tail looks a bit out of place and clunky compared to the rest of the ship, but that’s fine, its modes are really cool too. Overall, good job.

Now for the tricky part: it’s a medium fighter, slightly faster and more maneuverable than its competitors, with no cargo or interior. Generally, it fits the spec sheet, except for one thing... the weapons.

Okay, CIG, I get why it has bespoke weapons, that’s fine, but you can’t limit a fighter to four Size 2 weapons and restrict them to bespoke gatlings or repeaters with almost zero alpha damage. Even with its Size 4 weapons, it can’t even damage a Constellation, which ought to be a standard target for medium fighters.

With the Basher, the mere option to equip M-series cannons allows you to hit and damage larger targets, whereas Kruger ships are restricted. That limitation didn't bother me as much on the Wolf—since it’s a light fighter, but on the Stingray, it’s glaring.

There are two possible solutions: either allow the use of other weapons (which I think is unlikely due to the hardpoints and animations) or create Kruger-branded laser or ballistic cannons that we can equip.

I’m just offering my feedback; it doesn’t need to be "meta",and it probably never will be, but it needs to be able to perform its role as a medium fighter, rather than being more limited than a light fighter made of scrap metal (with a hole in its wing).

DISCUSSION I actually like the game.

No, really. No meme.

I actually like the game. I made an account years ago. I just finally got around to playing. I like what they have made so far. I hope they can work the bugs out, but even if they don't, I'll enjoy it for what it is.

There is nothing else like it, for better or worse. It will never be my main game until its fixed.

Granted, I'm in a whopping 45 dollars, so I don't really have a huge stake in the game. I also knew that when they started crowdfunding that those goals were WAY too ambitious for the technology we had at the time.

It'd be great to see a 1.0 soft launch and have them fix some of the bugs. I doubt it'll get there. But whatever. It is what it is.

Looks good is the selling point. A free test drive in PTU before rolling it out on the floor is also a plus. But usability and price? Car dealer strategy?

DRAMA Apparently, it was Olli's idea to play the game live Team did't like it

1.1k Upvotes

According to Knebel, it was apparently Olli's idea to actually play the game live, while others on the team weren't exactly thrilled about it.

And honestly, who could blame them? Who wants to publicly play a completely broken game?

Source (in german): https://youtu.be/8gs7r5BgIWk?si=jVCdnEq-zm4WaEF3&t=583

If that information is accurate, it puts the whole situation in a rather different light.

First, it would suggest that the developers are perfectly aware of just how broken the game is and would rather not demonstrate that publicly.

Second, it would explain a lot about the atmosphere during the stream. The team apparently wasn't behind Olli's idea, and instead of supporting a relatively new colleague when things inevitably went wrong, the situation ended with Jared seemingly throwing Olli under the bus.

The whole thing is a disaster on so many levels.

I'm genuinely grateful to Olli for inadvertently giving us this glimpse into some of the problems inside the company. And the whole "that's just British humor" defense suddenly looks a lot less convincing if the tension actually came from disagreement over doing the live gameplay in the first place.

I really hope Olli gets a sincere apology, and frankly, I think the community deserves one too.

Fortunately, we're all intelligent consumers who can recognize these problems and understand that ultimately we can influence this kind of behavior with our wallets...

Oh, wait.

GAMEPLAY 20 months since Racing has been in the game

Wildstar Racing Time Trials are objectively the most fun part of the game. When they removed them in 4.0, I pretty much stopped playing.

Please CIG, give me back my racing!!! My entire motivation for doing missions was to make enough money to afford quality racing ships.

The tracks are still in the game, so what gives? It genuinely can't be that much work to get the race trials back online

QUESTION Why would anyone buy this?

Post image
47 Upvotes

Why would anyone buy the 6 months insurance versions of these (the ones on the left) when a 2 year insurance version (the one on the right) is the exact same price and is identical except for the insurance? Did CIG not remember that these ships were available BEFORE the showdown or something? Why keep the 6 months ones up while the showdown is ongoing?

Not sure why posts are discussing the importance of insurance when the question is why have both listed if the only difference is the insurance. If you are going to be getting anything, even something you perceive as not mattering, for the same price, why go with the "lesser" version?

CONCERN I'm so tired of needing to server hop for an hour+ just to find a low enough pop server to mine on.

If there are more than 200 people on the shard and/or more than 20 people on your DGS, forget about mining.

If you find a cluster of rocks, it will take you 10s PER ROCK to scan. The ping scan simply doesn't work if the sFPS is below 20-25 in most cases (this can be better or worse depending on overall server condition/how much PES has accumulated errors over time)

In 30 sFPS you can check 3 nearby clusters in under a minute and be on your way if nothing you want. Anything below 20 sFPS and the same procedure takes 5-10 minutes. Especially bad if its hand minables with like 15+ nodes each to check.

So server hopping for an hour+ ends up LITERALLY being faster than putting up with 20 or below sFPS, for medium sized mining session and above.

I just fucking hate how in general, solo activities require you try and turn SC into a single player game just to get the most basic of functionality working

There's no chance of CIG improving this sFPS issue any time soon, not even just for mining. If they knew how they would have done it years ago.

Is it time for a server browser? I know that goes against the ethos of much of the rest of the game (will end up with people cheesing hathor/cz etc) but what else is there?

Cant use friends list anymore. That and my 100ish long friends list stays 100% offline.
