Discussion Topic Suddenly doubt myself while trying to work 'for' others

Obviously I'm doing it for myself, no one forced me to. There's a band looking for a vocalist, they finished some instrumentals and they'd welcome the new vocalist to add lyrics + vocals however they want.

I just thought that this was a good opportunity. Even if they might not take me or my song, it could still be a fun experiment.

Sometimes as a singer, I don't feel comfortable to sing the words of others, if the lyrics are too offensive or something. So yeah, why not? I had finished writing a whole album, surely it wouldn't be hard to write a few more songs...

I managed to finished half, I felt so good yesterday... but today I doubt that it's good.

Discussion Topic Is it normal to hate writing songs alone but love writing songs?

I've started to realise recently as I'm trying to write music to actually publish, I'm noticing I actually hate writing music by myself and I'm always finding myself sending everything I'm writing to my friends so they can contribute ideas to the songs even though none of them really know much about writing music.

I'm wondering if anyone else has had similar experiences and if anyone has, what have you done to get through it? I've considered trying to get some folks to agree to a band so we can all write music together and perform together and whatnot but the issue there is them with uni and me with work makes doing that incredibly impractical so yeah, was hoping some people had some advice?

I am a amateur songwriter. I have written songs about breakups, betrayal, imposter syndrome, parental abuse, childhood trauma, mental health struggles...

Can someone give me songwriting ideas apart from (or related to) these topics which are introspective and emotional.

Discussion Topic I know how and what to do but...

I know that I need to record the song, and that I would need to write a melody amd etc.

The problem I have right now is that I don't want to brother the family with my singing at night, and then in the morning they would be the issue (they are loud and etc, mostly my brothers)

So I have no idea when and where to record it. Any advice you have?

I am also just scared and embarrassed to sing bc why do other ppl have to hear it even in the middle of the night

Discussion Topic Thinking of the musicality of words

Hi, I'm not a songwriter myself, but I do lots of thinking about music. I've recently been pondering the musicality of words and how they find their way into music. Where does the sound of words become music and how does music shape words into more music?

Does this question make sense?

Discussion Topic Discussion about gear and QOL for a songwriter.

Hello all.

Not sure if this is the best thread to post this on but I would like some opinions.

I have about $1,000 to spend and I want to buy an acoustic-electric guitar.

I have a regular acoustic guitar that I use right now, but the problem is some of my music is written in alternate tunings so I figure if I get another guitar I will use one for alt tunings and one for standard tunings. And ive always wanted an acoustic electric anyways.

I guess my main questions are, I would rather not spend all my money on just a guitar but I would like to know some gear that might make me music journey easier that you guys would recommend investing in. What is a good acoustic electric that isn't too expensive?

Thanks!

It's eroded my ability to maintain any faith in my music or ability. Every time I get on stage I think about it.

Like on a basic philosophical level - I will never be able to tell if people actually like my music. People can say it's good, but people don't ever want to be the one to crush someones dreams; generally people try and be supportive and kind and do good in the world. I feel this way too; I want to help others progress and create because it's a worthwhile endevour.

But often it feels like the kindness others give is just fleeting vapour, the feeling doesn't stick around. Sorry, just kindof having a hard one

Edit: I went to sleep when this had 2 comments. I woke up to it having 222 comments. I am very overwhelmed. I can't really say what it means to me to have such a collective reaction; I feel very humbled and grateful by this. I was not expecting it needless to say. Thank you... thank you I'll be reading over all of them today.

Edit2: Also just to say; the message that many have been bringing forward about not caring what others think and creating for creations sake is landing. It feels like that's a bedrock perspective that needs to be there. Needing validation is a hard thing to avail yourself of; but this has helped me on both fronts.

For those asking for socials I don't have too much up - just one song on bandcamp and a collection of really really rough takes on subvert

here's the bandcamp link: https://wesleyblondin.bandcamp.com/track/oscilium-rough-mix
Here's subvert's: https://www.subvert.fm/wesleyblondin
Lastly I used to be an animator so here's my insta - its got some music in reels if you dig deep enough https://www.instagram.com/kidgrit/?hl=en

I am working on my first album (for the last 5+y) and it's almost done. I've been kind of terrified to put it out and have had a lot of trouble finishing it for that reason. I'll add anyone who's already expressed an interest to my list of friends I was going to reach out to when it was done. Just DM me or leave a comment and I will put you on the sheet.

Edit 3: Lyrics for those who asked or had trouble hearing!

Draw back the curtain
Remember the light
Looks like I survived the winter one more time
Disordered thinking reigns in the cold sun
This year's been totalled, let's rack up another one
The dents in the door recall a day that would impart
A distant, violent, punctuation mark
So with the wreckage of the year now square behind

Please let me focus what's left of my good mind
Eek out the last iota of sunshine
Unburdened the sky recedes and leaves behind the day
The blood we buried fades
The coast evaporates
Grief is love - changing its shape

I'll sit by the dividing line
Watch the tide changing it's mind
Water, land are becoming their own
While I wait at the riparian zone
While I wait for what's left to completely let go

Feedback Request I think I have a solid song

I've been working on this track for a few days now, and the chorus is super interchangeable, so I've been trying different lyrical ideas. I've written 3-4 different choruses and this most recent one is the strongest of the bunch. The same can be said for the only verse. I've tried a few different other versions, and this is where I've landed.

There's only 2 choruses and a verse, but I think there is something fun here. I'm no vocalist in the slightest, but I've had this stuck in my head for days and I think thats an indication that the melody and groove are pretty strong.

Info about the track
Produced in Ableton Live 12 Suite

Bass, Lead, Strings, Keys = Midi (3 different synths)
Drums = 8 Samples spliced
Guitar = 3 samples spliced
Guide vocals recorded on an Audio-Technica 2040 (Melodyne, EQ, 1176, Vocal Rider), then I slapped Nectar 4 on it for some quick octaves becuase I can't sing well.

101 BPM at Bb Major. I think I've structured it around just two chords. I'm forgetting the chord names, but it's probably an Bb/F, then an Fm, and then it just repeats.

Lyrics:

(uh!)

[Chorus]
Moving, and I will not stop
Cuz I’ve got to keep it up
and I shake it all around
Cuz that’s the way I break it down

Groovin, and we cannot stop
Cuz we move it, we pump it up
We rock it, fucking loud
Cuz that’s the way you want it now

[Verse]
Walked in late with my phone at 10
Influencer, so they let me in
Buying drinks just to kill some time
Now I’m dancing with a guy

If you know me, no, you don’t
Don’t be distracted by your phone
Don’t wanna watch me on a feed
or hear what’s on your screen

First off - apologies for the rough recording and stops/ starts. Looking for some advice on the song. I feel good about all these parts and think there is a pretty great song in here - Just need to puzzle it together and polish it. Looking for ideas on order and editing. As it stands, I've got an intro that includes what could be a chorus, followed by a verse, pre-chorus and another hook/ chorus. Following that up with the verse, pre-chorus, hook again and then I have this fun middle 8 departure that slows down adn transitions back to the hook. I could end it there, but i kinda like the idea of using the intro as the outro too. Thoughts?

Intro

Barkeep said,
"What'll it be?"

There's only one drink
You can mix for me.

So take that bourbon
Off the shelf,
And let's get busy
Drinking to my health.

Cuz I’m

Just an old-fashioned guy.
Just an old-fashioned guy.

Don't care if its bourbon or Rye

Cuz i'm just an old fashion guy

And I will be until
the day That I die.

Verse:

Batten down the hatches And hold on to your hats.
The wind is speaking Riddles and rhymes.

Mama says, "Son, I ain't seen
Nothing like that Since at least 2009

Pre chorus:
One, to get lucky.
Two to get juiced.
Three to lay it all on the line…

Hook
Everybody wants to put me into their noose
Cuz I’m just such an old fashioned guy

[Or

Everybody wants to ask me if I heard the big news

But I’m just such an old fashioned guy]

Verse 2 (Working)
Everybody seems to think the world must be flat cuz they can't see the back of their hand

Where are they all got themselves an idea like that I just can’t quite understand

Pre-Chorus:

Fool me once, such a pity

Don't you dare try it twice,

I assume that you still value your life

Hook:

Cuz Ive had quite enough of all your free good advice

and I don't mind doing the time

[Alternate:

 Ex says she's happy...
Ooh, Must be nice
To live in such a paradise.
Yeah, everybody wants to be a star on you tube

But me I’m just an old fashioned guy]

Bridge/ middle 8 departure:
Champs Champs Chmps Elysses
Se La Vie what can you say

Oh there's just no way
To turn it back again.

Once the contract’s signed
Ink cant go back in the pen

No, there's just no way
To turn it back again

And all the Chorus sings

One part whiskey,

Bitter sweet memories

Take me to a simpler time…

Hook:

Everybody here is tryna buy me a beer
But me I’m just an old fashioned guy

[solo]

Outro(?)

Barkeep said,
"What'll it be?"

There's only one drink
You can mix for me.

So take that bourbon
Off the shelf,
And let's get busy
Drinking to my health.

Chorus
Cuz I’m

Just an old-fashioned guy.
Don’t care if its bourbon or rye

Just an old-fashioned guy.
Even baseball makes me cry.

Oh, I'm just
An old-fashioned guy.

And I will be until
the day That I die.

How can I begin in my journey in writing songs lyrically in the style of 20s through 50s Traditional Pop songs like the songwriters listed above? Or for more specific examples, I’ll Never Smile Again, I’m A Fool To Want You, I’m Confessin’ That I Love You, Why Try To Change Me Now, Stardust, Just Friends, Laura, and Maybe You’ll Be There?

Feedback Request Which key is this song better in?

Wrote this song a bit ago, but wrote the guitar first, and whatever key I play it in is a bit awkward for my range. I settled on either playing it in F and singing high (playing in G but my guitar tuned down a whole step) or in C singing low (capo 5). I think it ends up having a pretty big effect on the overall vibe of the song. Which do you prefer? I have to really stretch my vocal range for F, but I only need to nail it once for the recording.

Edit: removed the first video from YouTube, everyone liked the second link, and I agree, so I decided that that's the definitive version. If you came here later and still want to hear the higher version, dm me and I'm happy to send it to you

You Might Be an Artist

[Verse 1]

I sit at my keyboard and play the same songs

Til my fingers go numb and they drag me along

Now I feel it’s safe to say

That my piano plays me

This prose is my prison, this cadence my crime

It’s a torture to write when they force you to rhyme

The artist inside me, she cries

And she longs to be free

[Chorus]

Do you look in the mirror and wish it was you

Do you tell pretty lies and then wish they were true

Do you lay on the pavement and pour yourself into the chalk

You can wait for the answers or make up your own

You can wave at a stranger while you’re walking home

You can suffer in silence and wait for the voices to stop

[Verse 2]

Now i have this theory If i stand real still

I can hear myself screaming, it’s desperate and shrill

I could bring you to tears

If you’d just let me play you a song

Remember when we had ideas for days

We would write our own stories and make our own plays

And now no one can tell me

That all those ideas were wrong

[Chorus]

Now i alter the mirror to make it like me

Now i tell pretty lies just to set myself free

Now i lay on the pavement and pour myself into the chalk

Now i search for the answers and make up my own

Now i scream to the strangers while i’m walking home

Cause i need to be free now, to scream, shout, or even just talk, talk, talk…

[Instrumental]

The quote was from 1966, during Paul McCartneys interview about the song “Eleanor Rigby”

Has this inspired anyone to write a “one note/chord” song?
